Depending on server settings these are incredibly useful. Some public servers can be running for weeks and the power/water went out ages ago. If the server has loot respawn (and it should if its a sane pubby), you should hit up the VHS store and the bookstore as soon as possible. This makes life a lot less shit when your only character with 3-4 In carpentry dies to that 25% laceration infection, and you don't have even any doors left in town to dismantle to grind them back. It can still be a massive problem to lose more skilled characters due to furniture having no respawns on a server, but VHS tapes make it less painful.
In MP, you can log out and back in the server and watch the same vid again for XP. I got level 10 carpentry without dismantling or building a single thing.

The mechanic VHS is especially useful early game if the good condition cars have no keys. One skillbook and a VHS can get you to level 2, have stopped picking Mechanic as an occupation ever since.
I found a mechanics vhs tape and the first book; it was unbelievable how easy those first 2 levels were to get. If that's the same for any skill, then grinding has just gotten far easier; absolutely save these tapes for after youve read the respective books, unless truly desperate
It's kind of OP though, like it's either changing a gazillion light bulbs and batteries. Or reading a book and watching a tape. Like why ever grind the old fashioned way?
@@zwenkwiel816 you aren't guaranteed a book and a tape for the same skills; it could take months before you can exploit this. Plus grinding sucks ass
@@quinnlee-miller9792 if you visit the library and some vhs stores you'll have everything you need to get a bunch of levels in most skills. it's not that hard. like the 3 VHS stores in Louisville have 100's of tapes in em and if u have a car and a duffelbag u can loot em all dry in an in-game day. little trip to one of the libraries (that you pretty much pass on your little tour) and you should have everything you need to level all the VHS skills quite a bit. just feels so much easier and different from the grind we had before. like before I'd make a mechanic character. pick some mechanic perks to level faster and get to the grind. now any char I make can pretty much have whatever skills I want within a few in game days of watching tapes. specializing is pretty much dead. just pick fast learner athletic and strong cuz all the occupations are now a waste of points....
Dude, by the time you're able to survive Louisville and loot all these stores, you're in the endgame and shouldn't have to grind all those levels. Frankly, you've earned it, being able to get through goddamned Louisville. To get to and enter Louisville, you need a functioning car, enough gas to get there, a sledge (a .1 or .01 drop rate now), as well as some combination of skills that get you there. Specializing isn't dead, because you still need to survive to see Louisville, and actually find the stores. This again is endgame, where most characters have already secured their livelihood; at that point you need to spend hours of real life time grinding mindlessly. The tapes remove that and allow appreciable gains; hell, I haven't even crunched numbers on how far they can actually take you. My mechanics example was levels 1-2, but the book and tape combined might not do the same at 5-6. In other words, this still isn't an issue. You need to survive the early game to even get a chance to use these, unless you spawn in Louisville.

There was a bug on my multiplayer server (Feb-March 2022 before the recent update) where if you moved a television from an elevated position to the ground, you could rewatch tapes. We had one player metagame his way to 10 in every single stat you can train via VHS tapes in this manner. He would watch the tape, get the max XP, read the book, move the television, reslot in the tape, and the game would not recognize he had watched it before. I'm pretty sure he got to Mechanics 10 within 3-4 days and he maybe worked on a car twice in that entire time. I managed to get to foraging 6 without ever once using the new foraging mechanic this way. It is a little busted. Maybe they should just increase XP gain rather than adding in such a busted mechanic.
Before they started fixing the ways to rewatch the vhs tapes I found a room with 10 tvs in it. You could watch all the episodes at once, relog and do it again. Then the subreddit tv memes began.

(Granted, my spawn rate is high as I'm messin about in custom sandbox, but that does not mean you won't ever find a vhs hoarder. I found a toilet paper hoarder house a couple of times now lol. TP even in the fridge and icebox XD)
The TP event is such a scam. Completely removes any real loot from the house.
@@Retanaru just cracks me up when I find one. I just have to double check, but when I've checked a bookcase, the fridge and the oven, and its stuffed to the brim with loo rolls I remember the fights back in 2020 for them and chuckle, imagining it was the house of one of those folks who never used it all up XD
Blasts, I was just in March Ridge and missed the VHS store.
Aaand you can rewatch them! I wouldn't watch them over and over at the same point in time, give it at least a day before you watch them again. Skill or non-skill VHS
i wish there wa a list of all the tapes that give skills. since the first aid tapes don't have obvious "skill" names like the "cooking show" and maybe there is more that i have not found yet. and i don't really wanna try them all
There is a list. Go to the info screen where it shows your character weight, and then click the little tab button called training materials or something. It keeps track of ALL skill books, shows, and special magazines that you’ve seen.
@@clarkedawe3464 to me it just showes every vhs and not specifically the skill vhs.
@@NeinDao yes it keeps track of all of them you have watched... useful because they dont help with boredom if you watch the same one again... which is the reason to watch the non-skillbook ones.
@@NeinDao You can actually narrow it down. More Skill Tapes go about Ep6-ish, and they're all clearly written. Very helpful, btw...
@@rumbleroller2154 there are a lot of videos with episodes that do not give skills and there are videos with no episode number that give skills. like all the first aid vhs i have found have names. i think its like war something. and then you have episode tapes like magical woodlands that dont give skills. i cant find a system as to identify the skill vhs.
Love that I hear RuneScape music in the background of so many videos that are not about RuneScape. It feels so nostalgic and comforting.
The thought just occured, would listening to RuneScape music while working at my job help me grind productivity on a higher level? Probably not for me, as I am a firefighter/EMT, and I'm sure it would be disruptive, but for someone with a desk job? Just a thought...
Im that guy that never reads patch notes who just discovered one of these VHS tapes yesterday. It was for mechanic skill, which I didnt even know there was a show on TV for mechanics. Anyway, I waited to watch the tape until I got two skill levels in mechanics and I found the volume 2 book and read it. That one tape took me through level three and after, i only had to swap headlights and battery in one more car to ding level 4. They definitely feel a bit cheesy but for slow grinding skills like mechanics these VHS tapes are a lifesaver.
>I don't have to grind out light bulbs anymore.
THANK YOU KINOPLEX.
Wow, these short videos really help your channel out. Start adding longer videos in the mix. I think guides about your first 7 days would be a nice suggestion.
finally, TVs have a use after the stations sign off.
Yeaaaah baby!!! No need to hoard watches for electrical anymore
Thank you! I didn't know that there are vhs shops in game and searched them in houses only.
don't tell anyone, but it seems like you can rewatch VHS tapes on multiplayer servers by relogging.
dont forget the home vhs that don't appear at these stores, there are those for skill tailoring, metalworking, first aid, and electrical. Check wiki for info.
The VHS tapes are tracked differently than the educational videos at the beginning of the game. You can watch all of the TV shows and watch the VHS tapes to gain double experience.
They stack. You can watch life and living first, then when you finish the tv min max go get the tapes and the same episodes give XP again
Gonna add this to a saved video list.
It was such a good edition and makes sense
So you can make a little movie place to just enjoy the VHS... okay, that's great.
Yeah I'm done watching the TV shows now that Louis is out and the map project is updated. The mall in Louis is actually not too bad compared to the center of the city.
Louisville mall is doable even in vanilla if you have guns and ammo on "normal" setting instead of rare.
All I want is like. A media junkie trait or profession that starts me with one of each book and skill tape.
In MP, you can log out and back in the server and watch the same vid again for XP. I got level 10 carpentry without dismantling or building a single thing.
Did in single player it works too?
theres a vhs store at the strip of shops across from the turbo building south side in louisville but you cant see the sign its the second store from the top with the stairs on the back
Seems like Nurse will have an opponent for the times to come
Found a bug with VHS tapes. If you have watched them, die, then start a new character, you cannot get exp or boredom from VHS tapes. It seems like VHS tapes do not get reset when you die.
I eagerly await the Red Letter Media machinimas
Osrs music. The nostalgia!
From mod to finally officially part of the game
I once found a house with like 20 VHS tape in the woods. I think it was someone survivor house.
There are also certain Home-recorded VHS tapes that can give skill too.
And these can't spawn in VHS stores, so it's back to tediously looting every damn house and storage lot to find them...
@@JosephHarner just as God intended
You can watch the show on air and then watch the VHS of that show and get double XP.
Skip the electrical/mechanics grind to hot-wiring? Say no more.
Bro can't tell how tf Im soo lucky but exactly this part of the store is "selling" and just empty
Subbed, great channel.
hey do stuff like walking through bushes, trees, falling over fences, and climbing through broken windows insure zombies? i dont clear broken windows in my survivor base even after boarding usually because i feel like the broken glass helps but i dont know
damn, carzone levels mechanic? i always ignored those as I didn't know the show from tv :(
Is there not a VHS store in west point?
Ah, Oldschool Runescape music.
For example, mechanics; nobody in their right mind would wait to hot wire cars for a tape and a book just in case. You need a car ASAP.
Not to mention any tapes and books you do have makes a new character far easier to train back up to where you were! That's a killer for a lot of people. It seems to do alot more good than bad.
@@quinnlee-miller9792 haha u joking? getting a car in westpoint and driving to LV is the first thing I do. get me one of the mansions by the river and i'm set. most of the VHS stores are pretty easy to get to especially the one more to the south.
I dont know the drop rate, but ive also had luck finding tapes at schools and libraries.
Have you done a video on guns and the sound ranges for the base guns cause i would love to have a visual comparing the quietest to loudest. I normally use guns to move hoards and it would be nice to know which would be the best choices in the situations.
I'm trying a gun build out to see how I feel about them in the vanilla game. Sawed off shotty is the loudest and best for drawing hoards.
With the newest changes I've been getting away with shooting the ms788 in towns without drawing hoards
Patrick Bateman's favourite spot...
If the fitness tapes does not give experience directly, does it give boost, like 125% experience when exercise?
I think it might do something like that.
Im 300 hours into this game and im just getting well now. Im hooked.
video tip, do rain makes enough sound that you can sneak around zombies?
I though of multiple (8) tv’s in one room, simultaneously running different shows, will it work?
The front room cannot have Home VHS tapes
The back room can
Home VHS tapes are rarer than regular skill tapes for this reason, because the most reliable way to find the ones that give skill xp is by searching homes and the odds are pretty damn low.
if possible, i would love to hear here in the comments whetever im going crazy or not, or see a video about the zombies spawning in the latest update
i swear these guys respawn based on how zoomed in you are, as im a person who zooms as far in as possible when doing combat, only to find out that zombies have appeared from thin air after zooming back out and looking around (this is also a reason i never bother with big buildings, as it seems like they just respawn in the rooms outside my field of view)
It is most probably zombies coming from some place because of the noise that fighting makes
@@ketra1504 nope, even after fighting and making sure none heard/are approaching, i walk off, zoom in. walking back and zooming out i see more have appeared in a docile state
@@lowg7651 that's not how spawning work in this game at all. Zombies are pretty persistent and by default they don't spawn in any cell a player has recently visited. Have to leave an area for some in game hours before spawning can ever happen...
@@zwenkwiel816 hmm... thats definitely odd, happens way too often for it to feel that coincidental to me though... i am extremely unlucky too so might just be

Question unrelated to the video, my friend says that when clothes are bloody, zombies can detect you faster. I don't know if this is true or are there any bad effects having bloody clothing except a wound getting infected faster.
They used to have a smell mechanic, but it was removed.
Does this mean we could level all skills (besides fitness and strength), to max?
West Point VHS store when
me who based in rosewood without a working car: yea they op....
I’m playing the latest version of the game and came to the store at March ridge but didn’t find any tapes and there wasn’t even a sign of vhs store. What does that mean? Not all of these stores spawn?
Are you on 41.65? It sounds like you got left behind on one of the legacy beta patches
@@Retanaru yeah, i checked and as it turned out i was playing on 41.61. Thanks :)

Can you do a vid on lucky. No clue how it works and cant find anything on it.
Do you think Hemophobic is worth taking?
What is the teleportation mod you use?
It's part of the debug mode.
It's the dev tool, and it so much better now with the integrated map. No more using the zombie pop map to tp!
@@Retanaru Thanks
I didnt even know they gave xp so i never picked them up LOL
How do I use the tapes if I'm using a controller?
I couldn't figure out how to use the televisions with controller.
@@Retanaru ok thanks love ur streams btw!
I don't know why people are not freaking out over this, but for the vanilla game you can only watch the vhs once to reduce boredom/gain xp. If you died and make a different character it won't work unless you start a new game. I have been at low/none existing skills for a long time even after 100 hours because I don't feel like having to abandon everything and start fresh
This oversight just recently got added.
can someone make a list of training tapes that give random skills?
There's a list showing which tapes give which skills on the wiki. pzwiki.net/wiki/VHS
Can I have 5 TVs going at the same time?
Anyone notice how Simon's Fitness Club doesn't seem to do anything? what's it supposed to do aside from entertainment? I guess it's just a bit of a misleading title.
Also note that there's some home VHS tapes that provide skills to things like tailoring, electronics, metalworking, and first aid! Of course first aid is completely useless in this game right now.
Why is first aid useless?
Seems like they wanted it to do something and then never finished it.
Not completely useless in pvp
@@KaffiRawr The long and short of it is; First Aid only REALLY helps in that your bandages last longer with higher first aid, doubling the length @10. Its nearly impossible to 'grind' first aid as well, so even with skill books and a VHS, most players wont see it go past 4.
@@Tsukasa-TheWizard yes and no on the first aid grind. Walking over broken glass or jumping through a busted window gets you safe cuts to mend
When will rosewood get something
It is a Osrs Soundtrack??
Do the tapes completely replace the TV shows, or can I get the benefits of both? So like, I watch the shows, then watch the tapes for additional xp?
Double XP for watching both
If you watch on TV, you can still get xp watching the vhs later.. so double skill for being a couch potato still. :)
It'd be cool if fitness videos could give you a little extra XP while working out alongside it... Even like 5% boost.
I support this immensely; the current meta is either start at level 5 or level 9 fitness, and nowhere in between. The tapes giving more exercise exp could make it easier to start at say 3 or 7 fitness if you wanted and grind easier
@@quinnlee-miller9792 meta is either starting at 0, 5, 9 or 10, because the fist levels are so easy to get, you can excercise for a week and get more than lvl 2 fitness
