  • Last week we announced Yooka-Replaylee!
    store.steampowered.com/app/24...
    I sat down with Gavin & Mark, veteran folks here at Playtonic to discuss Yooka-Replaylee in a bit more detail. After some technical difficulties with our first attempt, we took the chance to get a bit more... unhinged... with this one.
    2:29 What IS Yooka-Replaylee?
    6:52 Revamping the art
    12:28 Better camera and controls
    16:46 Tweaking the abilities
    18:40 Challenges
    21:10 Map and Challenge tracker
    24:09 Orchestral Soundtrack
    27:25 Better character textures
    30:30 Why now?
    34:11 Most looked forward to improvement
    Other topics covered:
    Is Steve Mayles a whole person?
    Is Vendi made of flesh?
    How big was Gavin back in 2015?
    And more!
    This isn't all though, we'll be answering more of your questions, and our own existential ones, apparently, in the run up to release!
    Stay tuned for more!

      Is there a possibility to rearrange Grant Kirkhope's music? I respect his works, but his músic in the original game was a snooze fest, too quiet and ambient focus, it didn't capture the energetic and wacky feel like he did on Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie.

    My biggest gripe with the level design in YL always was how most worlds feel incomplete before they're expanded (most obvious in Moodymaze Marsh and the space world which both just kinda end halfway through a platforming section with no fanfare instead of finding a natural cutoff point), the casino level ended up being my favorite because of how its topology worked together with the expansion system (the central area doesn't really change, but new doors get added along the perimeter that leads to self-contained challenges). I'm not expecting massive changes but I'm really curious to see what the "revamped challenges and moves" will entail.

    • @CarbonRollerCaco
      @CarbonRollerCaco Місяць тому +1

      I didn't have a problem with the worlds feeling incomplete pre-expansion because I felt that was part of the point. No, the problem I have with the worlds is that the expansion mechanic and the sizes of the worlds in general didn't entirely make up for the small number of them because Y-L can get around them fairly quickly compared to someone going at B-K's pace, so the game still felt half-sized regardless. Even DK64 and B-T (haven't played Conker to comment on it) with their larger worlds had their teleport pad systems, occasionally even figuring them into the puzzle solving. Plus the expansion idea was held back by there only being five worlds to use it on. Thankfully, we're dealing with guys who're no strangers to meta-commentary, including rushedness if you'd finished the original game, so they may've made Y-R longer. If it were me, I'd say two or three more worlds (which would make a whole octave for the "skull found" fanfare) and a longer final boss battle that gets The One Book and Ghost Writers involved in finishing B in actual gameplay would do. Not a straight-up Jinjonator rehash tho; maybe more like trying to literally get the Book closed on B to bee-t him, but then afterward Quack steals it now that he's "free" from "the boss" only for Blasto to bumble on the scene and shoot him instead, leading back to the usual ending party.

      Preach it. Of course one would be disappointed if one expected something like a Banjo-Threeie, which was never even suggested as a thing in any quasi-official capacity to begin. Gamers need to stop being so sequel/trilogy-drunk, which itself is an extension of insecurity about the popular legitimacy of their passion. They need to wake up and see that that battle was won ages ago.

    • @justanothergamer9570
      @justanothergamer9570 29 днів тому

      @@CarbonRollerCaco Agreed. Yooka-Laylee has successfully put to rest my old sadness about never getting Banjo-Threeie. The spirit of BK lives on in a brand new, living series that, in my opinion, has even more potential for growth than the old one did. Though even if YL doesn't actually end up going much further after Replaylee, at least we got a couple new good solid games out of all this.

    I don't know if any of this team worked on Jet Force Gemini, but I think that was the epitome of the "you must do everything to proceed" factor in some Rare games. I loved the game, but I do wonder how many players ever made it to the last part of the game after finding out every rescue (that can die as you try to rescue them) must be rescued to proceed at the end. I won't use any of the optional bypass features mentioned here, but it is good to offer it indeed.

    1. A brand new Kao the Kangaroo cameo appearance.
    2. Revised Multiplayer with a new Battle Arena minigame based on DK64's Monkey Smash or a Pagie Race minigame based on Super Mario 64 DS' Multiplayer.
    3. An "Impossible" or "Last Stand" Tonic that changes the life system to be more like Impossible Lair, where if Yooka gets hit while at 1 HP, Laylee panics and flies away, leaving Yooka vulnerable for one more hit.
    4. An Old Save Bonus for owners of the original game, where Yooka and Laylee's dialogue is slightly altered to reflect that they're experiencing Deja Vu until they catch on much later on that they're in a remake.
    5. Possible Playtonic Friends appearances in the Arcade section of Hivory Towers based on what Playtonic Friends published games are installed on your PC or Console, just so that it isn't lonely there.
    6. New idle animation for Glitterglaze Glacier where Yooka shivers, like in that one frozen level in Impossible Lair.
    7. New joke tonics like Hollywood (everyone now speaks proper English, with 90s-esque dubs like that of Resident Evil 1 or Mega Man 8), Big Feet, Chibi, Laylee's Secret, and possibly the return of the Golden Try and Pants tonics?

    I mean this in a really appreciative way: As someone who always wanted to like Yooka Laylee, I had SOOOO many issues with it lmao. So many things I thought were bad game design or ugly looking and what have you. But I still always felt like, even if I hated playing it because of the myriad of problems, that I wanted to see you guys improve in future games- I think it had a lot of great ideas and even a lot of good execution, it's a fascinating game. Just y'know, buried in flaws.
    So it's insanely satisfying hearing devs themselves going "Oh yeah lmao I cringe playing this, there's so much bad game design here, let's fix it."
    That kinda thing is rare. People like to give benefits of the doubt, they like to look for the good in things- which I think is admirable, I do it too for flawed games I still like. And rarely do devs ever go back to a game like this- once it's out there it's done, why look back when you can look forward?
    So this is a real treat. I genuinely think I'm gonna enjoy the remaster even though I struggled to like the original, and that's amazing. I really can't wait for it.

      @@SchmergDergen They've already mentioned a few. Controls were really stiff and I hated you couldn't string together moves, but now the movement system looks something closer to, like, Mario Odyssey? Making the moment to moment gameplay fun alone is going to enhance the experience SO much.
      And they talked a lot about how they dislike a lot of the bad design in the original, and a few examples like that came to mind for me as well. I think they're going to try and make the game less frustrating/annoying. Big improvement if so.
      They also mentioned I think less backtracking?
      And I hope the collectible counter now takes into account how much of a world is currently available too- that would be a huge change.
      I think all of these are enormous changes. On top of the visual glowup too, I think this is going to finally push the game into the level of quality it always needed.

    Tightening the controls sounds phenomenal, I remember what they were like at launch and even after the big patch, they definitely felt better, but still not quite as tight as you'd hope, the Reptile Roll in particular still felt pretty squirrely.
    A map and a challenge tracker is *definitely* what this game needed as well, the worlds are huge after expansion and there's very little means of communicating to the player that they've run out of things to do in a level prior to it, the original also had a huge problem with conveyance, and leading the player to where they needed to go for challenges, what made this game's forebears work is that the old teams were really good about using minor collectibles (Quills in this case) to lead the player to where they would either naturally notice something to do, or lead them straight into it, but often times the Quills felt like they were just.. there to be there, if that makes sense? I've still never forgiven you guys for that one cheeky Capital Cashino token you stuffed under that ramp, either, absolutely drove me nuts.
    What I'd much prefer to see for major changes to the game is making the Minecart Levels both more dynamic and less punishing, they feel less like fun throwbacks to DKC and more like padded-out segments that are far too easy to screw up just for not knowing the layouts ahead of time, and this really comes to a head with the I.N.E.P.T. boss fight, which was sadly more reflective of the design than the thing it was making fun of.
    Speaking of boss fights, I really, REALLY hope you guys overhaul the final fight, it's just.. a crapshoot at worst and really unsatisfying as a conclusion at best, it doesn't hit nearly the highs of the classic finales you guys were known for back in the day, and I understand the team was small and you were short on money and time, there's a lot of allowances I've personally given to the original game, and I know it comes from a place of love, I love this genre, the classic Rare 3D platformers MADE me love this genre, and I can't wait to see this game become the best version of itself, much love from a fan since childhood.

    I really enjoyed Impossible Lair and thought it was a huge leap forward from the original, there HAS to be a sequel. I think the team could've had a bigger marketing budget because it deserved to get just as much eyes on it as Donkey Kong. The sequel could include a unique chapter boss for each world rather than fighting the same Capital B again and again, and honestly all you need to do is just segment the worlds individually like a Mario game and have a final boss. The overworld spelunking is a genuinely amazing concept and so are the state changes in all the levels.

    One of the OG backers here, even LPed it right away. Definitely enjoyed it, not every game I replay immediately after first completion!
    However... I'm not the sort that tends to purchase remakes of games I already own. The main reason I watched this Q&A was to determine whether or not your claim of Replaylee "not being a remake" is valid... and sadly, I haven't seen anything yet to support that claim. Control tweaks, camera improvements, a map and quest list, all of those are solidly in "remake" territory. Those coins _might_ speak to a non-remake status, but more is needed to corroborate that.

    • @drgribb
      @drgribb Місяць тому

      ...I don't think you understand the difference between a remake and a remaster? Maybe someone saying it's "not a remake" is in the context of that distinction between the two. A "remake" implies that they took the old game and rebuilt it entirely from the ground up, with a new engine, possibly even changing the game in radical and new interpretive ways in the process, like when they remake a movie from 30 years ago with a new director and new actors. A "remaster" implies it's the same base game, with a new coat of paint, some graphical tweaks, some quality of life enhancements, improved framerate, and maybe even some altered dialogue, etc. like when they release a 4k bluray of a movie that used to only be on vhs and dvd. So, no, this is not a remake, it's more of a remaster.

    • @ShadwSonic
      @ShadwSonic Місяць тому

      @drgribb Oh, I'm aware of that little distinction... but they're used so interchangeably even by experts that it's near useless.
      Case in point: the term they specifically used for what it wasn't was "remaster".

    • @drgribb
      @drgribb Місяць тому

      @ShadwSonic Wait, sorry, I'm confused. Your original comment said they specifically said it "wasn't a remake." That's the only reason I was replying to you. My reaction is different if they said it's not a "remaster," although my guess was always that they chose "replaylee" as their tagline to imply that it was more than your typical run-of-the-mill remaster, but that it wasn't to the level of a full actual remake either. Wasn't trying to treat you like you're dumb or anything, so apologies if I misunderstood your original comment.

    I love the original, and in some ways, I think it even improved on Banjo-Kazooie. The moves in YL feel very original, it feels like both Yooka and Laylee pull their own weight and have abilities based on their unique characteristics (in BK, I always feel like Kazooie carries the team), and I absolutely love the layout of Hivory Towers and how it has 20 full pagies to find despite only being a hub world.
    There are two main changes that I really hope to see. The first is that I'm hoping some of the minigames and the minecart segments can get polished up. I'm actually a fan of about half the Rextro minigames from the original, but that Casino racing game was really rough.
    The second thing is that I feel like there wasn't nearly enough enemy variety in YL. You have the normal foot soldiers (which get reskinned for each level), the eyeballs that possess things (the objects that they possess all function identically to each other), the flying drones, the stationary security drones that shoot lasers, the one type of underwater enemy, and the giants. Most of these enemy types appear as early as the first world and are reused throughout the game. By contrast, Banjo-Kazooie had at least one brand new, fully unique enemy type per world, and while many enemy types were eventually reused, they were reused sparingly enough to make each world feel truly unique. You got the bull in Mumbo's Mountain, the crabs and the hopping clams in Treasure Trove Cove, the snowmen and ice cubes in Freezeezy Peak, the mummies and mummified hands in Gobi's Valley, and the ghosts in Mad Monster Mansion to name a few. I'm tempering my hopes, but it would be really cool to see some new enemy types in this remake that help give the worlds a bit more character. Or at least give some unique properties to the different objects that the eyeballs can possess.

    This is sounding promising. Let me just add a few things that would make the game much better for me personally.
    *Kartos Sections need scrapping or completely revamping so that they control satisfyingly (like in the DKC games)
    *Rextro Arcade Games need scrapping altogether. I like the character but those mini games are abysmal.
    *Supporting characters should have standout homes or landmarks (hut/teepee/mole hill) to make them easily stand out from regular NPCs. It doesn’t feel the same having them just stood in the open where they don’t stand out.
    *Enemies and Combat could be more interesting.
    *Quiz sections need to be fun and innovative like Grunties Furnace Fun or Tower Of Tragedy to be included. Not just included for the sake of it.
    *Cut Scenes should be atmospheric and exciting (Kazooie, Tooie, DK64) not just boring in-game chatting (nuts&bolts, Yooka-Laylee)
    *Flying should be limited to certain areas and flying pads. It completely breaks the game being to fly anywhere.
    😊

    I haven’t finished watching the video yet, but I want to say I’m hopeful this remaster/quasi-remake will improve greatly on the original. One of my biggest issues was the map design and how they could often feel huge and confusingly complex, but empty. It felt like a Tooie style of layout, that was inspired by Ocarina’s adventure genre design.
    I love that you guys can take any criticism on the chin and continue to improve. Remember that Banjo was deeply inspired by Mario 64. For Yooka, please, if anything, look at modern 3D Mario and use it as a springboard for changes or improvements. Odyssey feels amazing and if Replaylee feels close to that, it would be significantly improved.

    I am passionate about the first yooka laylee game because it has so much potential. I think the combat system needs to be rebuild from the ground up, it just isn't fun. It probably should be as simple and fun as the one in yooka laylee and the impossible lair. I think the layout of the world, especially the third one, should be made more interesting and diverse. Also please make the ghosts like in the second one, giving feathers in bursts, some types are just weird like the red ghost. The are too many types of collectables, so this would be a way. There is a lot of little problems in the game that affect how one perceives it's quality, draging even the good stuff down. Especially given this is a game where your goal is to collect everything. Since this is a remaster I think a lot of great changes and improvements will be made. But I don't know how much I can ask for. Like I think the overworkd should be made more open and interconnected, but that's asking a lot. And imagine if the expand world thing is replaced with a change world from overworld concept reminiscent of the same concept in the second game. In the end I just really want to love the first yooka laylee as much as the second one, and I have trust in playtonic after I played the second yooka laylee game. I really hope playtonic is treating this remaster as a proper project, as important as the new games. The new collectables really give me hope here. I pray for them putting in the necessary work to make it a really good and consistent experience

    I have a few questions:
    1 - While I never minded too much, especially with the flight ability, some people find getting from one place to another in a world a bit too tedious, so is there a way to more quickly travel around a world? Sort of like the warp pads from Banjo-Tooie
    2 - Has there been any consideration as to how later abilities affect early game challenges? While I like being able to go back to a previous world with new abilites and make use of them, I don't like it when certain challenges are completely negated because of them. Case and point, the Rampo boss fight is completely trivialized by using the flight ability
    3 - Have you seen MauLer's video on the original Yooka-Laylee? I think you might have, but I was just curious
    4 - What do the Crystal Skulls do? Can we expect there to be a use for them in the new game?
