Still, for a large part of the people in India, Anime is still "a kid's content". What they dont understand that it also has a matured, layered story. If they just get past this medium, they will discover a whole new world of story telling.
And the "Chair" had more expressions than most of the actors today.

    Spoiler Alert!!!
Kid Suzume sees Souta in the everafter beside present day Suzume, which is shown in the closing act, when she was closing the door and returning back with the chair. In the first act when she goes back to follow Souta in the abandoned resort she says that she felt that she had seen him somewhere. And practically doubts herself for stalking him. She has some reason to follow him, not just because she is infatuated.

Anime films often sell well in tier-1 India, and this has little to do with the plot or storytelling. Other Anime films have come out before Suzume and fared well too. Anime is just a part of the urban millennial/gen z culture. We grew up with it and a large number of people learn Japanese too. Japanese JLPT exams are conducted twice a year, and if you go to these test venues-- you can see at least a couple thousand people show up to take the exam. This is the target audience for Japanese films in India.

The Anime Gen Z know are not the greatest Japanese animation has to offer... Majority of the anime fans in India are later millineals or early GenZ... and those are the people who are consuming and supporting anime even from small towns india for past 12 years or more.
The present GenZ just saw few flashy fancy anime and are thinking they know everything... but THEY DON'T REPRESENT INDIAN ANIME COMMUNITY. The heart of the longstanding Indian anime community are the late Millineals and early GenZs.
FYI: I'm born in 1995 and I'm from a small town.
Of course the misconception and prejudice of people that "anime is for kids" is still there in mainstream, but Anime is here and India.. Brace your self.... in the coming years!
Also, I hope slowly this prejudice comes down and this anime phenomenon promotes the producers to back the talented Indian animators in coming years, who can make Indian anime (anime-like stories) with indian stories, folklore, history, mystisism, etc...

Animation is an old artform in Japan. It's not seen as something only for kids. Some of the most influential movies ever that came from japan that hollywood copies is from their anime industry. Be it every movie of Hayao Miyazaki or Satoshi Kon or the sci -fi masterpiece Akira. Or the children's sci-fi classic Astro Boy by Ozamu Tezuka which influenced Stanley Kubric ifor 2001: a space Odyssey.
It's difficult to say when india will be at that level. It will definitely take years but that's not the main issue. The issue is there needs to be passionate people. Hope the anime boom in india will cultivate more passionate people in the animation field and animation studios become a norm.

we have Mahabharata and Ramayana which is converted into novels, for example the Siva trilogy by amich tripatti, describing Siva as a normal human who smokes, yet it tells as how a normal human can ascend to god level character. but if we are to animate it as exactly as the novel portrayed, the present government comes in to stop it. and animation can only take shape from mythology or religion,if you check the beginning of Japanese anime it is entirely made out of their religious ideologies as manga, then animation which gave people a sense of familiarity to accept animation as a medium of communication, to express adult stories. but in India we are still airing chotta bheem and mottu batlu.

These are the people who are experiencing fomo so they came to the theater for time pass. I had very bad experience in the theatre because of this same thing happened when I went to watch your name.
So in fact there are not many true anime fans in India , don't fool yourself by these large numbers . Idk but I feel most content in live action series and movies these days are repeated storylines. They often don't provide freshness in its plot and become generic. Animes on the other hand... for the most part outsource stories to mangas. Even though they have tropes and cliches every story provides something unique because the manga field is a competitive medium. The readers ruthlessly dismiss a story which doesn't provide any freshness hence it is necessary to make something unique. Every manga finds its seperate niche and gets animated only if that fanbase is relatively big enough hence providing a pipeline for anime. Anime looks that much more better because only the winners gets animated for most parts.
Ps: Suzume is totally the brain child of Makoto Shinkai and not related to any manga. I think the medium is healthily competitive though... to provide gem after gem every three months due to the process that goes into making mangas.

Before we even think of telling Indian stories in Anime format, we need to tell our audience what real love and relationships are. Nobody, in actual relationships, says "I love you" from the get-go. People meet and get to know each other over time and then, when, they think that they have a deep connection, it is they confess, that they love each other.
Bollywood and Indian movies in general, have ruined love altogether and made men delusional. Coupled with the fact that there is no dating culture in India, men get frustrated and one day, force themselves on women, thus leading to crimes against women.
