My assumption is the Python plug-in adds these as new clothes, but wonder how it resolves clothing layers, etc. This should be fun to play around with. ;-) Question 2: Have you had a chance to try this out in CC4 yet? I'm thinking of just jumping straight into CC4 for this pipeline, but I've found a few import/export bugs in Reallusion's new software and am thinking they probably haven't fully tested this back-and-forth yet, and feel confident I'll slam into some problem along the way. =) Thanks again for this step-by-step tutorial! Looking forward to anything you have on CC4 in the near future. Regards.
Thanks Jim! Ah yes, the FBX key issue haha, I remember running into that! Oh yes sorry, if I remember correctly I added the clothes and accessories separately under the add accessory option. I haven't tried it with CC4 just yet! I'm hoping to dive in and play around with both CC4 and IC8 in the next couple of weeks, haven't found the time to properly explore just yet. @@RussellMidfield Would love to see what you find! I went ahead and downloaded the CC4 plug-in (though it took me some time to trace down the right ZIP!) and was able to transfer "Camila" to Blender with relative easy. (The latest Blender add-on supports BOTH CC3 and CC4!) I think Soupday did some work on improving the Blender material settings as the skin looks much better. (The CC4 plug-in uses an unique "Export to Blender" now instead of the basic FBX export, reducing the kinds of mistakes some people might make sending a character over to Blender.) There currently seems to be an eye problem in the Blender material settings upon importing. Not sure just what is going on, but it seems the Sclera and Iris settings are off. Thanks again!
Thats a great video, thanks. I am just wondering.. if the whole adjustment process is done in blender, including geometry /sculpting and texturing.. why would anyone need character creator? Just for the base mesh?
Thanks kitteh! Yeah for the base mesh and base texture. This also allows you to reimport into CC3/CC4 and then animate speech and movements a lot easier as most of it will be weight painted nicely already. Makes animating about x1000 times easier.
This is by far the best tutorial for this process! Great job man! However i'm having an isssue when exporting back into CC3 the mesh is not being updated.. do you have any idea why?
@@RussellMidfield Yep! I'm sure i did the steps right, however im on the free trial of CC3, im testing the whole workflow to see if i should buy the liscence, do you think that might be the problem?
Hey Russel! First of all, thank you so much for this video! I've followed the instructions and exported/imported successfully a custom character. However, when I modify (or duplicate) some of the meshes in blender, like the shoulder in the video, when it's imported into CC4.1, I get the bone warning (which I guess it's what's wrong) and the meshes do not move correctly with the animations. Is there a way to re-assign the correct bones to the new meshes in CC? Also, I made changes to the boots and now the Hide Body Mesh tool is not working anymore. Any hint why this is happening and how to fix it? Thanks!!
I tried putting that into the character creator bin folder, and making an open plugin folder. Blender Autosetup did not show up under plugins for some reason. Failed to locate autosetup files, says to make sure my autosetup is installed properly.
Hmm yeah it might be that things have changed since I made this video. There is a thread on the Reallusion forum run by the plugin creator you can maybe get more up to date information from.
This helps a lot. I am curious about if one can import a custom model into the character creation and adding a rig to it within the software or if I can just use autorig pro with the custom model and bring it in without any retargeting. I have some monsters that I am working on which isn't exactly humanoid like and extra set of arms or I just need to stick with customizing the rig with auto rig and create my own custom animations in iclone.
With the upcoming CC4 you can import a custom rig, but I believe you still have to do a little bit of mapping/targeting. CC3 you first need to import into their 3dExchange plugin to remap any custom rigs you make, and then port over to CC3, so an extra step but it can be done!
@@RussellMidfield Oh. That is awesome. Thanks for the fast reply. I think that I am set on buying this and will make sure I buy the package with the free upgrade. Going to try it out. Great tutorial!! I have a question: when I try to import back from Blender to CC3, for some reason the Export Button in Blender is grey. I tried to select all my model and its components but still unavailable to export. What could it be?
Oh nice! Maybe that's why, not sure if the plug-in has been updated to work with the latest version of Blender yet. I'm still using 2.93.5 I believe, the release right before 3.0.
Hey just curious, I have the latest version of CC$ and when I try to import the new mesh back into Blender, it goes through all the checks, then just crashes without loading the character.
Is it possible to sculpt using the multi res modifier and bake that detail back down or to sculpt using that modifier but not breaking the export compatibility? I've been searching but havent found any videos on this process. I currently use ZBrush since its goz is built in but looking to get into blender
For some reason the Blender Autosetup option does not show in the plugins tab in CC3 after pasting the downloaded folder into the openplugin folder. Is there something I might have missed?
Oh gosh, it may be a number of things, the plugin or program version likely have changed since I made this video, I would check out the Reallusion forums, there is some good, up to date support there!
I am having a blast playing around with the free trial version but wonder... if I wanted to make, say, a non-human character. An elf or something. Is there a way to elongate the ears? I can only seem to scale them in the trial version. If there IS a way but it's only in the full version, that's fine; I just need to know how much customization I can do with these characters...
Oh hmm good question, I would say for any dramatic changes you want to make to shapes, it's probably best to export to a sculpting program like Blender or Zbrush, which you can do with the trial version!
@@RussellMidfield Just having a hard time getting it to work, the mesh isnt dense enough to get very detailed, but then when i increase it, it chugs my PC (i have a pretty good one) was wondering if you had any tricks to use to be able to do that? Also great vieos i really appreciate them.

What if I wanted to make character models that are like early days of World of Warcraft or even Warcraft 3? What would be the best polycount and texture?
Oh gosh probably quite low, an old game like that would probably have models less than 5k polycount, textures probably like 512x512, I'm sure there is stuff out there you could download to see. Good luck!
Hey Russell. Do you know if created characters I want to use for audio on UA-cam videos is allowed by Reallusion? ie just get an export licence? YT allowed users to download videos I believe which is prohibited by Reallusion iirc?

Great tutorial!! I have a question: when I try to import back from Blender to CC3, for some reason the Export Button in Blender is grey. I tried to select all my model and its components but still unavailable to export. What could it be?
Thanks! Oh hmm, what version of Blender are you using?
I'm using Blender 3.0 🙂
Oh nice! Maybe that's why, not sure if the plug-in has been updated to work with the latest version of Blender yet. I'm still using 2.93.5 I believe, the release right before 3.0.
Ah, ok! I'll try to downgrade and see if it works!
Yeah sorry, not sure, but that may be why!
Hey just curious, I have the latest version of CC$ and when I try to import the new mesh back into Blender, it goes through all the checks, then just crashes without loading the character.
Oh weird, there may be an issue with the plugin!
Is it possible to sculpt using the multi res modifier and bake that detail back down or to sculpt using that modifier but not breaking the export compatibility? I've been searching but havent found any videos on this process. I currently use ZBrush since its goz is built in but looking to get into blender
Yeah for sure, Blender has a special "Bake from multi-resolution modifier" option which allows you to retain the high-poly details onto your low-poly.
Is there a way to sculpt on top of CC meshes in blender? Not just move proportions etc, but actually maybe make some crease lines or cuts etc?
Yeah go for it, you can do anything in Blender!
Woww!! Its Amazing idea!!!! to create unique characters
But I place the plugin unzip folder in the OpenPlugin (Created folder) , the plugin is not showing in the CC3?
What the problem?
Thanks Kamran! Oh hmm, what version of CC3 are you using?
@@RussellMidfield Thanks for reply. version is 3.32.3312.1
Oh yeah sorry, I forgot to mention it in the video, the plug-in is meant to work with version 3.44 I believe.
@@RussellMidfield Thanks!!!! I installed CC3 version 3.4.3924.1 and the issue is still
Oh, I think it has to be 3.44. Are you able to download that one?
Hello Mr. Russell, I have a PROBLEM here, When I move "CC3-Blender-Tools-Plugin-main file" to C:\Program Files\Reallusion\Character Creator 3\Bin64\OpenPlugin\. The plug-in doesnt appear in Plugin Tab in CC3.
I also tried the Installer that automatically install the plugin but still doesnt appear in the Plugin Tab in CC3.
Can you fix this? :
Hey Mamomeme, what version of CC3 are you using? I believe it works the best with version 3.44. Other versions seem to have minor bugs at the moment unfortunately. Sorry I should have mentioned that in the video. Let me know if that helps!
Good luck!
@@RussellMidfield Alright thank you for the help :) I’m wanting to make character models close to that and I’m having problems finding tutorials.
Hey Russell. Do you know if created characters I want to use for audio on UA-cam videos is allowed by Reallusion? ie just get an export licence? YT allowed users to download videos I believe which is prohibited by Reallusion iirc?
Oh hmm, so you mean use the audio from a Reallusion video on UA-cam for your own production?
@@RussellMidfield Hi Russell, thanks for replying! No I'd be using my audio but added using their software lipSync and then uploaded to YT.. I'm sure I read that you can't have the characters you create being able to be downloaded by the public. I believe we can download videos from YT.
Oh ok yeah just a UA-cam video would be fine!
@@RussellMidfield Brilliant! Thanks Russell! Subbed! 😀👍
Thanks Ever Ready!
sorry sir, i have unzipped the file in the new folder OpenPlugin but i dont see the plugin in character creator :(
Oh weird, what version of software are you using?
@@RussellMidfield character creator 3.4
How do i get disney quality from iclone render?
Is it possible? Or i have to render in blender to achieve that?
You could, but it would be a lot of work I think. Blender's Eevee is a great engine that could give you Disney-like results!
CC4 проблемы. Из CC4 в Blender импортируется без проблем, а вот экспортироваться обратно не хочет, пишет "ошибка".
Извините, я не уверен, в чем проблема
Do you regain all the facial morphs after back to CC3?
I believe so yeah!
What about if you use an alpha brush to make some changes to the mesh in sculping mode will the normals also be updated and moved over?
Oh you may need to bake new normals in that case!
@@RussellMidfield ok nice, I should be able to to that in blender then, the only thing is that the head and arms and legs are their own textures are the normal maps all spit up by that geo? And how can I just make the maps for just the head? In zbrush there is a way to select geo by material maps would love to see a video on this.
Yup you sure can! I actually baked new normals for my lip sync contest entry in Blender
@@RussellMidfield i see Im watching the video so it’s makes the uv into vertex groups that will let me select the uv that I will make a new normal for! Thanks
Yeah good luck!
When I import everything comes without textures. Help
What version of CC3 are you using? I believe the addon works best with version 3.44.
If openplugin folder not showing in cc3 then you should know that python plugin only work from character creator 3.44. If your character creator is lower version than 3.44 then plugin will not appear.
Thanks duniya!
its compatible with cc4?
Yeah I think they're working on something. There is a thread on the Reallusion forums I believe with more information.

hey there
I got question for this part.
Do I have to export to new file? or can I just overwrite to file that exported from CC3 (3:35)?
Keep saying "failed to load the file" from 8:50 this step :(
I think you can overwrite if you want. I like to export to a new file though so I maintain the original just in case I need it.
Oh hmm, what version of CC3 are you using? I believe it works the best with V3.44.
@@RussellMidfield since I purchase them, I keep it update so maybe it's up to 3.4v I believe.
I will try few more time. step by step. This process is really important to me so..
Thanks for reply
Ok awesome good luck
do I need these addons too on the new CC4 ?
I believe you need the auto setup add-on yes. There is a new version being worked on if I remember correctly.
soupday blender plugin not working for cc4 :(
Aw damn, I thought he had most of it worked out, aw well hopefully soon!
I need help with making smoother motion easily
Oh ok, that's a good idea for a video, maybe I can whip something up!
Oh. So that is how you use the auto setup in character creator.
Yeah it's pretty easy, makes the Round-trip workflow really easy which is nice!
the plugin to re-import to cc3 isnt working
Oh damn that sucks, sorry to hear that, it might need an update then by the sounds of it.
Followed your instructions to the letter. Have latest version of CC3. Plug-in will not install. Tried rebooting CC3. Nothing. Double checked install procedure. Nothing. Any suggestions? 🙂
Edit: please disregard. May have found what happened. Lol! Thanks anyway
Nope. Same crap! Will not install.
HA!!! Fixed it! (There's an exe install for it at github.)
Ah that's good to know! Sorry I missed your first message!
@@RussellMidfield No problemo. The .exe works fine it seems.
Nice!
what is the github link?
can you send the .exe link here? I can not find!
Blender wont detect my plugin when i instal it. im using blender 3.1
Oh yeah the plug-in may need to be updated to work with the newer versions of Blender.
@@RussellMidfield It's okay It worked now, just needed to download the installer exe instead, don't even need the cc3 shader addin anymore, just the blender one will adjust everything on its side and work flawlessly on cycle render
Oh nice! Oh good to know thanks!
i am unable to find blender autosetup in cc4
Oh hmm, I haven't tried it with CC4 yet sorry! I'll try and see what I can find this week and get back to you!
@@RussellMidfield thanks for the deep dive into your CCB3D Roundtrip workflow, did you happen to confirm if CC4 is compatible with Soupday's plugin? you mentioned bugs in earlier replies, do you know which bugs are present? Thx in advance!
Yeah no worries! Not yet, but I have another video planned on the plug in and CC4 but still haven't gotten to it yet sorry, hopefully soon. I believe from what I've read on the developers forum thread, the bugs have been worked out for the most part and it's working well.
how much this cost?? :D hahah to expensive... should be some kind of personal use version...
Yeah the program isn't cheap it's true, but it's very powerful! There are cheaper alternatives on Blendermarket but you'll need to piece them together yourself.
daz is a cool software too but character creator is cooler
Yeah its true, Daz is a good one as well!
Interesting but out of date
Thanks Steve! Yeah, this is definitely not as relevant anymore as Reallusion has updated their software several times since I made this video.
@@RussellMidfield Thx for the reply. Why does the character come back into CC4 white? editable?
No worries! If I remember correctly you need to reassign the texture maps
