      @@strangelyukrainian7314 what's interesting my take on it is in the beginning andy didn't know about the sewer pipe he just dug to keep busy. as red said you have lots of time and prisoners will find some way to their minds occupied. it wasn't until they built the library around 1959-1962 that andy had access to the prison blueprints where his hunch was correct taht just next to his cell was the sewer pipe or storm drain pipe or watever you want to call it that runs to the runoff.

    Kindly pause scrolling and make space for the following information in your memory banks:
    1. When the prison warden found the Bible where Andy had hidden the rock hammer, it was in the book of Exodus. Exodus is a Greek word meaning "departure."
    2. Red describes Andy's dream as "shitty pipe dreams". During his escape to live that dream, Andy crawls through a pipe filled with raw sewage.
    3. If Andy had been incarcerated in just one cell to the left he would have had nowhere to tunnel to except the next cell, and thus would have had no amazing story to tell.
    4. The three times Red meets the parole board he is told "Sit", "Sit down", and lastly "Please sit down".
    5. Although it is never directly stated in the film, Brooks is in prison for allegedly murdering his wife and daughter after a losing streak at poker.
    6. Despite being widely considered as one of the greatest movies of all time, it didn't receive a single Oscar win, though it was nominated for seven, including Best Picture.
    7. The last word spoken in the movie is "hope", a major theme of the film.

    Saw this video yesterday. Felt like ordering a rock pick hammer. So I did. Couldn't find one with a wooden handle. Settled for one with a leather wrapped handle that looks appropriate for when the film takes place.
    No clue what I'll do with it. Maybe in 600 years I'll manage to tunnel my way to a better world than this joke of one.

      @@sdkelmaruecan2907 part of the issue is you already know A) how big the tunnel is and B) how short a distance Andy had to dig. Most of Andy's escape was actually made through the sewer pipe. Red was imagining that Andy would dig his entire way out of the prison, rather than digging through the length of one wall. Red probably also assumed the tunnel would be quite a bit taller than it was.

    • @nubreed13

      @@8Rincewindthat and the wall was actually crumbling in the spot Andy was digging which helped him escape faster. I think this is referencing the Alcatraz escape since the only reason they managed to get out of their cells is because the concrete was crumbling due to the exposure to the sea. The reason is of them got left behind is because his wall wasn't as weak so he couldn't dig his way out.

    I have to question the greatest movie of all time here on one thing: Red's "Power" within the walls of Shawshank.
    We learn from his first scene that Red is "the guy that can get it for you". He has the clout to get almost literally anything smuggled in to the prison and get it to the right people. He does this by controlling a vast network of fellow prisoners, guards, and even outsiders. My question is how?
    I know inmates with power do exist in prisons, but its never someone who is just a "nice guy". It's usually something with a lot of resources on the outside. Money, information, the ability to control and manipulate others into doing their bidding. At no point in the film do we see Red displaying any kind of "Power". He's completely non-violent, he does not ever maliciously manipulate anyone. He doesn't bully or even intimidate anyone including "new fish". So how does he do it? All we EVER see on the other end of his Acquisitions is an exchange of ..... Cigarettes?
    Does the film really want us to believe that Red runs this prison empire just on Cigarettes? I understand nicotine is addictive, so MAYBE I can buy the other prisoners going through some degree of trouble for a couple of packs, but remember- this is a world where prisoners are literally beaten to death for stepping out of line. We actually watch one prisoner beaten to death for complaining one time. We see another beaten to paralysis. Then, we see another about to get pushed off of a roof, saved only because the guard could leverage that prisoner for financial gain. We see a prisoner shot, others spending a month in solitary. Do prisoners risk this for a few goddamn smokes?
    We also see that Red controls the guards as evidenced by the Roof tarring job scene. Red whispers two words into a guard's ear, and gets himself and all of his crew out on the special detail. We also see the Laundry guy is in on it. What's their motivation for helping Red? Can they not get cigarettes on the outside? Why would they risk their careers and possibly jail time for aiding convicts? I cannot believe they would go to this trouble for a pack of menthols.
    Lastly,
    How are the Warden and Hadley not aware of Red's empire? The very second the Warden knew Andy was "Good with numbers", he completely altered his environment so that he could benefit from it. He uses inmates to do his laundry, shine his shoes, press his shirts, do his taxes, and makes tons of money off of their slave labor. How does he somehow not know about Red's extreme power to make people do things?
    In the end, we see Red has no outside power or connections. He ends up another broken down "institutionalized" inmate who can't pee without permission. He works in the sh*tty supermarket and lives in the depressing suicide motel, in the very room Brooks lived in. He has no friends, no resources, and appears to contemplate suicide himself at one point before finally deciding to look into Andy's long rock wall idea.
    Do I have too much time? Yes. Have I watched this movie 7000000 times? Yes. Is it late at night? Yes. And these are my burning questions. Let's hear the answers Shawshank fans!

    • @mdfilmguy
      @mdfilmguy 3 роки тому +11

      In Stephen King's orginal novella, Red (the narrator) says that the authorities do know about the black market but tolerate it because it keeps the inmates under control. (We see a hint of this when the warden allows Andy to keep the Rita Hayworth picture.) As for Red's empire, well...he's been there a while, so he probably has connections with paroled inmates and/or people he knew from his life before. After that amount of time, he knows which guards/staff can be induced to smuggle something for a few bucks.

      @@Randomuploads2012 okay, 😂 you have fixated on the least relevant point of my questions, but thanks for the clarification on the cigarette type.
      I said very clearly that i know prisoners CAN gain power in prison, my question was HOW did Red do it strictly on cigarettes? If he had outside connections, or any kind of wealth or power accumulated, why did he just go to the lonely suicide hotel and grocery store the same way Brooks did?

      @TonyPerez816 3 роки тому +1

      @@mdfilmguy thanks for the response about the book. I didn't know those details. I'm not sure it really clarifies the questions, but it is good to know.
      If Red does indeed have power, money, off connections, I'm not sure why he doesn't use any of it when he gets out. He basically goes to die just like Brooks did until he decides to try Andy's idea.

      @@TonyPerez816 well to answer your cigarette question. Inmates usually don’t have access to real currency so they use other items in place of money, usually in a prison population the inmates will all agree on one or two items to be used as currency, I’ve heard of everything from Ramen noodles to Tuna being used. So even if an inmate doesn’t smoke they can use the cigarettes to acquire other items or services.
