  • Scholars of Northern European art Larry Silver and Aneta Georgievska-Shine present two complementary lectures on the mythological paintings of Peter Paul Rubens.
    In “Hers and His: Rubens's Royal Mythologies,” Larry Silver discusses Rubens's different treatment of the gods in two of his most significant royal commissions, the Medici cycle for the Queen of France and Torre de la Parada for King Philip IV. He explores the epic and poetic qualities of the former, versus the rather demystifying approach in the latter.
    In “Abducting Europa,” Aneta Georgievska-Shine explores Rubens’s faithful copy of Titian’s Europa as a testimony of the special place of this mythological story in Ovid, as well as of the artist's own status at the Spanish court-with regard to both the Venetian painter and to Velázquez as the third great master in this triad.

    “Mythology and Meaning in Rubens”. Is this a lecture designed for me or what? Professors Silver and Shine, thank you so much for sharing.
    I love the philosophical connection between Arachne, Titian, Rubens, and others trying to finish the double coat of purple at a large upright loom. I wonder if we can find a similar tradition for those other famous contest losers, the Sirens and the singer/poets who tried to sing their tale
    I so appreciate the explanation of Rubens works. They are often so full of mythological, allegorical and historical figures, that it is easy to get lost. I will say though following Phillip II, that sometimes a nude is thus a nude. And the artwork that his grandson Phillip IV, hung in the halls at home might be different than the art hung in the “cabin” he and his buddies used when they went hunting.
    Meaning like beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What a diplomat/painter thinks a painting might be very different than what a “king” sees. If Rubens identifies with Prosepina, the rape is a terrible tragedy. But she is not a nymph nor a mere maiden. She is Jupiter’s daughter. Pluto is no stranger but rather King of the Dead and Jupiter’s brother. A king might see here his own personal tragedy; a dynastic alliance arranged by Father Jupiter, Grandmother Terra and Aunt Venus. What happen at Hippolyta’ wedding is unthinkable, but rather than identify with her King P4 might identify with the hero of the scene, King Theseus. For. The reat of us King Saturn eating his children, means “Time consumes all.” But for a king it might have a different and much more literal meaning.

    Could have been a good lecture IF we could actually see the paintings. How absurdly ridiculous. All they had to do was zoom in on the slide show. But no, let's stay wide angle so we can focus on the monotone incredible dull speaker. OMG!🍋🍋🍋🍋
