So I haven't recovered yet but you just reminded me that better days are coming and to be proud of self for not giving up when I had to go back to SA and get stuck there for a year. The Z visa is a single entry visa and once you get to China you have 30 days to convert it into two permits; work permit (the card issued by the Foreign Experts Bureau) and the residence permit (the sticker pasted on/in your passport by the Public Security Bureau). All your old school needed to do was cancel your work permit (NOT the residence permit which allows you to legally stay in China) and give you a release letter.
