Why are flights over the Atlantic Ocean so bumpy? And why is it faster to travel east than west? And why has turbulence increased over recent years? I talk to two professors in atmospheric science to find out.

this drone footage must've been expensive
Can't believe you actually held on the entire flight
I'll be honest I didn't fully appreciate how good your videos are. I've been subscribed for a few years but I wouldn't catch every video. Now your channel's gone from an occasional-watch to a must-watch!
The strategy is working I see
The change is working ❤
Criminally underrated
Agree
Same with my channel.

I used to have an extreme phobia of flying, but by learning about things like this (along with avionics and aeronautical engineering), my fear has become a LOT more maneagable.
Recently I experienced a strong amount of clear air turbulence during a flight from Bali to Manila and that sent me back to my a more extreme version of my phobia - this video does help with that though. Understanding reduces anxiety.
1:50 yes we need a video about that
It's fantastic to not only hear from experts in your videos, but also that you are able to platform their hardwork.
This is a comment for the algorithm. You're killing it Simon! I sincerely hope you're able to keep up with your expenses. Great video!
interactions for the algorithm gods, but also, the turbulence joke with you falling down was really funny and unexpected from you
Special guests!? The production value of these videos is insane
immediately recognised Tim Woollings from his lectures! it's so cool that Simon can get them to participate too
Great timing given the recent record breaking flight across the Atlantic
Didn't Concorde cross in like 3 hours?
@@JasonAtlasObviously that was faster but this is about a plane flying at normal "optimal" air speed but flying ridiculously fast ground speed.
@@the_bottomfragger I think there's was a British airways one from way back then maybe. Not sure though.
We're all rooting for you Simon!!
Looks like the algorithm was back to working at the right time, I'm glad you're doing well
"I'll see you in the next one" - that is so satisfying to hear you say!!!
Just finished reading Tims book about the Jetstream which was amazing! Love the little details on the historic experiments that were done to understand it. And after writing a thesis on the Jetstream and Atmospheric Dynamics I learned so much new stuff 😊
As someone who doesn't fly often I can thankfully say I've never actually experienced extreme turbulence. But hearing about it and seeing videos of it makes me wish I never do
If you do, keep that seatbelt fastened at all times.
@@AB-fh9zh in the times that I have flown, I never leave the seat. Seatbelt stays fastened. No chances lol
comment for the algorithm
This makes me angry! So angry that I'll have to respond for the engagement!
I too am engaged enough to voice my opinion on this
Gotta help out our boy Simon
Yeah, we must help this guy out
BLASPHEMOUS response!!!
Make sure you watch the whole video guys, we want this watch retention to be as high as possible! Keep it up Simon, great video!
Thanks for this! Just got off a flight that had crazy turbulence. Reminded me of the key and peele sketch
To be honest, now that you have made this shift towards videos that you think we want to know about has actually made me watch more of your videos. Keep going man. Its working. I hope that it works enough for it to become sustainable for you.
Nobody wants to fix the potholes in our airways 😢
thanks for your work Simon, it's great to see Prof. Tim woolings and Prof. Paul Williams in the video!
Let's go Simon! Keep up with the videos! Another great one!
Thanks Simon! Really enjoying your book "Firmament" at the moment as well!😊
Awesome video, Simon! Thank you for your work on this channel!!
Thanks for continuing to put these out
Simon It’s really nice to see you back into a groove. Thanks for all this really educational and interesting content…and the stellar work of editing done to make it more digestible.
wasnt ready for simon to get Boeing'd in that greenscreen
Channels like this are some of the best on the platform. Easy to digest and entertaining science communication - supported by the research and often interviews from the researchers themselves. Please keep going Simon!
I already knew what the video was gonna be about before watching, and I still enjoyed every minute of it!
It's funny just recently saw a argument about how the reason we have more turbulence is because "more people are recording it" and that seemed silly to me. Fun to see an answer on why I felt that way lol
That IS actually something that has to be controlled for if yer gonna do solid statistics - and actually, I'm most of the way thru the video and I missed where he popped that balloon, do you have the timestamp?
I thought you’d talk about how Ryanair landings hit harder than my mom
That's partially due to the fact Ryanair only flies 737s, which are built to land harder, and partially due to the fact Ryanair prioritises shorter landing distances over comfort, which is both cheaper and safer
why pay for a ticket to thorpe park when you can just get on a £8 ryanair flight
😂
maybe they only hire ex-navy pilots lol
you know what they say. a good landing is one where you can use the plane again. a great landing is a firm landing in 1944 but you didn't stop
Very interesting. Not only this is well explained but also the people who are interviewed are very competent and eloquent on their subject.
Amazing video, hopefully you get more appreciatoon. Love this channel!
Love the editing on this video
This is so well done. Educational, clever, entertaining, and really well edited. You are really good at this sort of education, and I really appreciate it.
Love the step up in editing, couple of fun jokes and always interesting to get voices in for sources instead of just quoting their books. Good Job!
Such a good video. I love how you always speak to experts to support your claims, not many people go to that effort.
Love the work you’re doing Simon
superb vid and beautiful annimation
Where was this video when I had to study for my climatology and meteorology courses at uni? Such great and easy explenations! Like SO many topics one had to understand!
I'm half way through your book, it's brilliant.
found you by accident, and now I'm going to comment and like on every video to help with the engagement because you deserve.
I've been flying for....a very long time (I am probably not your typical viewer, if for no other reason than age). I've known for some time about the jet stream and why the journey is so much quicker coming back to the UK than it was going to the US (I grew up in the US have lived in the UK for over 35 years). I did not know about the additional turbulence, it must be said, but it makes sense. What else I've noticed is planes in general have got slower. I imagine that's because they are more (relatively) environmentally friendly - more fuel efficient and, crucially, typically two engine rather than four. I suspect that's the reason for the slow down - a good thing in general (I dread to think what Concorde would add to the environmental load.) Thanks for this!
Great video. Learned so much in 11.55 minutes. Amazing how you organise the flow of the video. I see a lot of hard work behind the scenes.
Good video! And yes please make a video about the gulf stream please!!
Just commenting because I love this channel and want it to grow!
Such an interesting video. I know people love laminar flow, but turbulence is just as interesting.
Fantastic video again Simon.
The quality of your videos are on another level!! Loved the special guest cameos!
**WATCH THE ADS!**
Simon doesn't get paid if you skip ads unless you're a Patreon. Also, I wanted to comment for the algorithm!
And I am commenting for the algorithm.
What if I click on the link? Can I skip then?
@@kian2010140 not totally sure with that one but it suggests online that they only pay if someone has watched a significant amount/all of an advert, or actually bought something. I think just clicking isn't considered by the advertisers because it's probably seen as an accidental click if you haven't watched the whole ad before clicking. I assume that's how it works!
Or you have UA-cam Premium, which I believe gives a better share than ad watch time.
@@josiahjray A premium-viewer is indeed worth more than an ad-viewer almost all of the time.
I've only been on 1 flight and never knew about this, I loved the editing style of the video by the way
This deserves a ton of credit - very creative and engaging
Been a fan since you were doing your doctorate!
I was just a high schooler when I discovered yah and have enjoyed your content ever since!
Keep it up man!
Fascinating! I've always wondered about the science behind this! 👍🏼✈️
The weirdest turbulence I ever experienced was when I was flying from Miami to Rio de Janeiro directly over the equator. It's called the equatorial convergence. It triggers lots of thunderstorms and heavy turbulence.
"it's my favorite kind of turbulence" felt so wholesome, great job interviewing these experts :-)
Wonderful video, Simon. I hope you keep going for many more years. 🎉
Thanks for this Simon, this is important work you do
This blew my mind. I loved and am fascinated by it.
I have absolutely loved the newer videos!
Loving this new format, very well done!

Again and again, nice work 🙏
Love the interviews and the animations!
Enjoyed this format!
Great video! Really informative while being nice and concise.
Loving the new style Simon :)
The way this actually is something I've thought about but wouldn't have thought to look up why.
Absolutely love your work, great video as always!
What a fabulous video - super-interesting and super-entertaining in equal measure. Thank you, Simon! :)
Interesting video, great production quality as always

Liking and commenting for appreciation and awareness, you do important work in the educational landscape of youtube, going more in depth about the one of the most important topics (climate change) and its associated factors and consequences.
Aaaaah excellent video, and superb production!
Left me with a lot of topics to find more about, excellent for general knowledge o7
I fly fairly rarely and have done so for over 50 years. I can add my anecdotal evidence and honestly attest to experiencing an increase in turbulence on flights. I remember that experiencing turbulence on a flight was a noteworthy experience once but I have experienced it on every flight on the past decade or two and normally multiple times per flight.
Most people generally disregarded their seatbelts between take off and landing 20-50 years ago. Now it is well and truly advisable to keep them buckled while seated at all times because some of these turbulent episodes are like sitting on a bucking bronco. Quite unsettling actually.
wow this is incredible i had no idea this was an actual thing
Another great vid, so good to see you still making high quality videos. Long may they continue! 🎉
Yes please make a video about the current state of the gulf stream
simon these videos are great and youre a national treasure. Now youre a dad youre getting even funnier lol. I would hate to lose your channel, youre a great science communicator and youre great at voice overs i wouldnt be surprised to see you on bbc documentaries!
Stopped flying years ago, though I’m a Canadian academic resident in Japan. Flying to international conferences on energy and the environment became too absurd, considering that aviation is so energy- and emissions-intensive.
really enjoyed this video dr simon clark phd !!!
I really like where you're taking the channel with this video! 🙂 By focusing on explaining other topics that are related to climate change, that could still merit a video in their own right, you'll keep people interested and coming back that maybe have had enough of full-on climate change videos.
Keep at it, I'm sure the algo will need time to get back in your favour due to the lack of posts last year.
One of the greatest videos since the year started
Very informative and well presented!
Excellent video as always.
Love to see a video on the Fly Less/flightshame/flygskam movement.
Keep up the good work!
Is there any way to tell what weather patterns were like in ancient times, or even millions of years ago. Are there are any unique features that might have come out of that data when it was modeled?
Good to know ahead of my next flight
simon always makes my brain to tingle for little thinking.
I think it's instructive to elaborate on why a tailwind allows planes to fly faster. The intuitive explanation is that the wind is pushing the plane along, allowing it to fly faster with less effort, but this is not entirely correct.
The real reason is that planes must maintain a certain "indicated airspeed", which is the speed of the plane relative to the air (it's also affected by air density). If the plane's indicated airspeed is too high, it could break up due to stress caused by air resistance. If it's too slow, the wings will not generate enough lift and the plane will fall. When there is a tailwind, the airplane must fly at a faster "ground speed" (speed relative to the ground) while maintaining the required indicated airspeed. Conversely, with a headwind, the plane must fly slower to maintain the required indicated airspeed.
One interesting consequence of this is that, if a plane is flying normally in calm air and then encounters a sudden tailwind, the plane is actually at risk of falling out of the sky, because the tailwind has caused the plane's relative speed to the air to decrease, thereby preventing the wings from generating as much lift.
This is so interesting! I’m a German Highschool student about to graduate and I am in a physics proficiency/advanced class, but we don’t cover these kinds of topics, thank you for doing this!
Please never leave YT!
Perfectly balanced movie: the first half a good reminder, and the second half new infos and references
Its criminal this guy doesnt get more views
I still have to say. The century we saved earth still does not have the number of views that it deserves! Definitely one of the best videos on this platform
What a nice surprise! Paul Williams helped me learn python when I studied at Reading.
Lovely, beautiful video perfect for the algorithm to recommend
good development direction of the show. Keep it up.
