That whole thing at the beginning about "this is a great warm up exercise because it's interesting" is exactly what Slash would say. the Sweet Child intro was one of his old warm ups until the band thought it sounded cool and wrote a song around it
I've heard him say that whole sweet child o mine being an exercise thing is an internet rumor. (Just checked... he clarifies that rumor in the Howard Stern/Slash 2014 interview around 9:10 mark).
Odd, it's in his autobiography. But I know he co-wrote that with another guy, so maybe it got twisted a bit. Nonetheless, slash has said before that if practice isn't fun that he doesn't find it as productive, and I tend to agree with that on a deeper level than just playing an instrument. I appreciate the correction though, as well as the very rare citation of source! I like seeing civilized UA-cam comments once in a while
Jacob Gafford
Haha ya we're a rare breed. I used to tell people it was an exercise too until I directly heard him say otherwise.
But I think you're right about finding a style where exercise and playing are intertwined so that's where the confusion probably comes from. I know when I "practice" with "exercises", I make it really fun and as a result a lot of what I improv during practice sessions can actually be used to songs with zero/minimal tweaking.
All that being said, if ever I become famous and write a book or do an interview or whatever, I would have a hard time explaining to someone clearly how I came up with that riff both from practice exercises as well as deliberate writing.
God damn this song is tricky. Can't wait till I play it with closed eyes. Will get there eventually! Freaking love this song.
You'll get there! It is tricky indeed.
Can you now?
Look buddy it's been a while but I think you may have got it now
@@erichlewis960 yeah maybe here in the future he mastered it
Dude you're awesome. Thank you very much
que onda goncho.
Mira vos como crecio gonzalo
God
TWM presente
That is incredibly kind of you and I sincerely appreciate it. And thank you for taking the time to listen to our music!
Awesome tutorial, very clean, straight to the point, no other shit words, or message, really rocks! Thanks this guy, and subscribe :)
Nicely done! Your breakdown of the piece, the tabs and the slow and normal speed run throughs are very helpful. Thanks for putting up this video!
Excellent dude! Spot on every single note. Spent all day learning this watching several guys and also checking out tab and also hearing by ear. You have every single note correct and you play it very well. Thanks oh, you saved me a lot of time.
Hey man, this probably means nothing to you, but thank you. This video and tutorial caused me to take interest in lead after playing guitar since I was 15. I'm 31, so, yeah. It took a week, but I now got it... almost up to speed. So once again, thanks for the effort and keep on keepin' on!!!
I've been playing for around a year and a half. At the stage you are at (After a year) I was trying to develop my pinky playing too and trust me, if you play with your pinky little bits every day, in no time at all it will come naturally.
You will get the lick in no time, just keep working on it ;)
This is awesome, i've literally just started up playing guitar and found this brilliant for practicing both my picking and fretting, as well as improving the strength and flexibility in my fingers. You got yourself a subscriber!
I know 95% of people aren't going to like this, but if I could make a suggestion? At the end of the vid, go through and call frets and strings? I'm a blind guitar player, and tabs are no help. Go back, rewatch the vid, except with your eyes closed. This is how I get the vid. lol If doing the abuv still makes sense, then the vid is good. Thanks for your time. :)
How did you type this if ur blind
Avramy Leitner you don’t look at the keyboard when you type. Lol only people who can’t type look. Blind people use programs on their computers or accessibility features on their iPhones. Blind people aren’t as helpless as most seem to think. Lol hope this helps.
I’m in the same boat
Taylor Scott Omg I'm sorry I'm just dumb, I hope all is doing well🤘💕
This comment has 8 years old now, very proud of this guy being blind and probably playing way much better than me🤘🏼
This a riff that was born classic...
Slash rocks!!!
Thanks man! Helped me learn this along with a tab on ultimate guitar. If anyone is struggling with the jump between their little finger and middle finger on frets 12 and 15, just replace the 12 fret middle finger with their index finger.
Its tuned half a step down
Should we play it half step down or is it just this guy?
@@arash7378 its been 7 years but I'm pretty sure this song has to be played half a step down because of the bass line right after this intro riff.
@@jonnycast29 ty very much. Yea its been 7 years and im starting to learn guitar NOW. Lol
Tnx for answer
Lol, 7 years
@@arash7378 He's playing it half a step down, this is correct. I think he just forgot to mention it in the video.
thanks for the video dude! ive been reading the tabs for this for awhile now and it confused the hell out of me untill i saw it broken down.
That's my favorite thing to play when I'm getting ready to jam. Down scaling and that final bit on the upward scale really hard to do all of it.
Dude, awesome. Youve helped me out more than most other guitar players. And youre a humble dude...Keep 'em coming man, thanks!
dude.....where u been? its been 3 years since your last video! i enjoy your stuff!! keep it more often
damn this is so hard to play at speed. My fingers keep getting confused :-(
Play it slower then
It takes time for the muscle memory to settle
Best tutorail...slow and quick catchup
Just love this vid.
Bdw can you send a link for the backup track.plsssss
I've been practicing this for a week and I can finally see the end of the tunnel:) It seems so easy right now;) Thanks for the tabs.
thanks man i appreciate your contribution , you save me a lot of time with straight forward tutorial. i Expect you to be successful.
This channel is one of my favourite ones on UA-cam!!!
I am new to guitar, about 2 years of playing. I found a invaluable too,. it can slow mp3 play back to a crawl if needed and progressively come up to tempo among other things it is called Riff station. I use it daily i highly recommend it I also used it to learn slash Anastasia.
Why would anyone 👎🏽downvote this🤔 It's freakin awesome!!!👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽 Much MAHALOZ for going through the trouble of breaking this challenging song!!!😎....subscribed & notified...looking forward to more from you! Cheee!!!😁
So this was what T-bag did before he went to prison...
thanks now i can play the intro and show off this to my friends hahaahha
Hah
Same with me bro🤣
@@aliviaflakesprojects6848 He failed miserably
Have you ever thought of doing like a full song? You should do this one and every single other song on the new record. All the songs are already out on Rolling Stone website just to let you know:)
Thank you soooo much mash. Thanks to you I am one step closer to learning Anastasia
and thank you for putting the tab aswell!!! : )
Damn, did this video help, this song's been driving me crazy for months. Just need to practice now.
I've been playing guitar for one year , and now I can play that intro
It's truly just practice, don't give up, you'll get there, I promise.
It's funny you say this is mostly alternate picking and is great as a warmup exercise because Slash has said the same about another of his great riffs from back in the day - Sweet Child O'Mine. He's said that it was essentially an alternate picking warmup that he morphed into a riff, then into the song.
Did it kill you to play it slow? You are damn good man... been playing a good 15 yrs., just now starting to dabble with lead. Thank you for your lesson!
i can play it! thanks for the help great video! can you do the rest of the song?
Sending lots of love your way, Veronica! Thanks for the kind words ;)
Envious doesn't even cover my feelings for your ability to play guitar in this video lesson cover, but also your own stuff, ACE work mate, keep it up i love it! :)
awesome man i just couldnt get that last part by ear for some reason. perfect!!!
It's been exactly 1 weeek since I started and I got it down now
its been 3 and im still stuck on the intro
dude this is awesome, im four years late on this video but this rocks!!!!
Slash is great in creating warm up exercises
I don't see why using tabs is a crime. There are a lot of beginners who want to play his music, and playing by ear for them is not really possible. This lesson is actually beyond helpful.
God that riff in the beginning is gold
Thanks for the tab, I'm sure this video will get tens of thousands views after Apocalyptic Love release
Slash has always tuned down a half step. So either tune down a half step or just play a half step lower on the neck.
Cheers from Portugal !
This really reminds me of the Godfather Theme, is it just me that gets that feeling? I guess the fact he fitted part of this into that on the Stoke dvd (If I remember right) makes me think of it. Love the video as well :)
Awesome video. To the point!!!! Love it
Thankyou so much, cant wait till im done finishing with this
for all those who are wondering, you have to tune it down half a step
Glad you found it useful!
Hello my friend!!
first of all, i have to tell you that i am from Buenos Aires, Argentine and i found your channel yesterday. i like it so much. You are a very good teacher!!!
Slash is my favourite guitar player!!!!!!!, and Anastasia is a great song,
Now i want to ask you a favor: please teach us how to play Startlight solo, ¿please?.
Muchas gracias, realy, thank you so much!!!!
Chau chau (bye bye)
I totally love Your tutorials!
Thx man, you helped me out a lot with this song!
Helped a lot man. All I need to work on is the speed now.
You'll get there Potato! I believe in you!
Classic guitar and rock/metal sound great mixed together. I always think of Randy Rhoads. He blended the two together better than anyone.
Wow, this is a perfect way to do a lesson, thanks! Learnt it in under 15 minutes at full speed and I'm relatively new to guitar!
Relatively new? What's Relative? Played for a year now, been at this lick for 5 days now and I'm still not up to speed =p Ofcourse, I suck at alternate picking and using my pinky. However, this lick is a great exercise to improve that.
Anyways, well done to you for getting it that quick. And cheers alot to Mash And Flutter
for taking the time to make and upload this lesson =)
Thanks! Glad you find it useful!
The track is called Lorena's Chop Shop by Mash and Flutter. You can find it on our channel!
Excellent lesson, thanks.
Great Lesson Damien !! Thank you !!
great lesson!!! love this song and its an amazing lesson (i've mentioned that right?!) #AWESOME!!
Half a step down?
awesome lesson
Really good !! Thanks guys ! really helpful !
1:38 thanks!
Excellent lesson. Note for note. Best Ive seen. What recording method do you use for the audio ?. Its spot on
Thanks for the lesson ! It's really useful !
Only Slash can write something this badass
Sounds a lot like Slash's Spanish guitar piece - 'Obsession Confession' - check that out if you haven't.
How about a lesson on the outro to Anastasia? that would be awesome!!!
This is my fav lesson thank you very much, im in now
hey, i loved you in the warriors your line at end was classic WARRIORS COME OUT TO PLAY E AY!
can you do a tutorial on the beer bottles on fingers?
Great video, thanks for sharing!
I know this video is ancient but I actually lost it for many years and I just found it. What kind of gear are you using? Those pickups sound hot and screamy I love that sound
best tutorial for this song
Wow :o it helps so much! Thx
thanks for the lesson :) I like this song. It's a bit different from what Slash usually does, which I like too of course. It almost sounds like he was doing some Yngwie Malmsteen stuff.
Yes it is
Finally DID ITT
Hell yea man, took me AWHILE to play this smooth lol but well worth the time
Parabens ficou muito bom....good work....
This is awesome
gracias men
only slash, would make his intro seem like a solo itself. ALL HAIL SLASH
@smith28adventure actully its inspired from a classical song from bach called occata and Fugue in D minor
Thank you for the lesson
perfect lesson man!!!!!
Nice man. Almost got it. Still "trying" to get it smoothly
Hey man......sweet lesson, could ye do a video like this for no more heros too?")
thanks for the video man you make it awesome
Goodness the intro is a song itself.
he actually plays in in the made in stoke version of the godfather theme! sharing the knowledge;D
I can play it perfect one time a week lol
isaac 96 wonder how much that's improved
@@erichlewis960 Wonder how it is now 😳
@@alexy33t46hones I used to play the intro and I completely forgot about this, I'm gonna learn it again
I have forgotten this 😂
@@erichlewis960 did you learn it yet
looks like the young T bag from Prisonbreak
its actually a lot simpler than i thought, upon listen to the song i thought it would be insane although im not saying its easy
arvin bhattacharya it was an easy song just the speed is hard for me
Great !
Waiting for Bad Rain
Thanks a lot
The best way to learn, thx. :)
How can I configurate de Amp for that song? Is a Marshall 30Fx. Thanks. The video is the best lesson.
Good stuff dude, thanks for the lesson with the Tabs. :)
