my dad served in bamberg in 1975 - 79, i can't recall which company he was in.. i was a teenager i had fond memories of playing basketball at the gymnasium and in the adjacent bubble gym, going to the movie theatre, the cafeteria eating with friends and hanging at the teen club.. as teens my friends and i would go to this lil german store and buy all sorts of gummy candies and cookies. one day the old lay that ran the store sold us a big bottle of wine, ahh the good ole days. i went to Nuremberg high school in my 10th grade.....then back to the states fort campbell, ky
thank you for posting this; I was in Bamberg from Dec 1992 to May of 1995. I was in 2/14th FA (MLRS) which unfortunately deactivated while I was there.
wow... my father served in bamberg back in 76, this is where my sister and i grew up and went to elementary school for 5 years. I played my very first game of t ball right on lindenager ave, where we lived. my father was a major then. i remember how the castle on the hill was lit up at night, all the many folks marches we did and the christmas bazaars we attended. my parents are both gone now, and as i am about to turn 50 this year, i will truly cherish the memories i had in bamberg as a kid. this is a beautiful place to live. thank you for a walk down memory lane. george w. newman
I played Baseball here in 81, we lived here till 84, and I got my first crush here lol I thought my heart was going to break when we rotated back to the States
As a former Mil wife of SFC Garold Fisher, stationed here in 89-91 he was motor pool sgt. Loved this base, brings back only good memories. Lived off post and enjoyed a beautiful bus ride in from Unterhaid. Gary drove the BMW. Great food and people.
we lived in oberhaid during our first tour there. 78-81 i was only 3-6 yrs old.rented an apartment from a farmer all my friends were german kids. our 2nd tour i was 7-9th grade and we went back to visit. i couldn't place any of my memories but i do still have some flashes
Bamberg my home for nearly 6 years (2000-05). I was a part of the 1-33rd FA "Golden Lions". We deployed and returned; what a wonderful place and community. I am planning a trip back their in 2019. Nothing will stop me from returning. Bamberg is part of my life and I could not be happier. Without the Soldiers it just looks dead; it was very lively back then.
Iziah Carthens it's very lively again today, maybe not as much as back in the days, but today it's the biggest federal police academy in Germany, I'm having my training there myself and it's very busy in there :)
I was stationed at Warner Barracks 1967-8 with C/3/7 Hawk Missile company. I would like to chat with fellow Hawkers who were there then, or around that time. The PX has a strange smell that I was never able to identify until I learned that a German cavalry unit was stationed there. The stable was converted into the PX and the smell was the remnants of manure.
WOW -- has things ever changed!! We were stationed there in the early 70's, and so many things I don't remember, and what I do, has really changed!! But what I will never forget are the great times, and the wonderful friends!! Have been back about 5 times to see the city, in the last few years--- Bamberg and Erlangen were the BEST tours!! Thanks for sharing-- amazing views!!! 😊
Dustin, thank you for the memories. I was on that base as a young man in 1976-1978. I was with the 2/2 Cav Regiment, assigned to the Howitzer Battery. Lots of really fine memories there. Thanks again.
I've been watching this video and really brought back memories, I was stationed here from 1999 to 2005 with the 1/6 FA. Thank you for having this video, even though I'm 10 years late. LOL
This is so hard for me to watch. I spent so much time there. My grandfather worked in the little gas station way back in the 90s before they moved the gas station up by the movies and then he worked in the four seasons and i started in the px when i was 15 and worked there a while too. It was crazy to see how many people knew him and i have even met people in the states who by some freak coincidence were stationed in bbg and knew my grandfather. Breaks my heart to see it so empty. I have so many fond memories of this place. Now I'm in the US and missing home. Thank you for this video it felt like a short time travel to me.
I was there 91-97 I recall the px and the movies and the movie rental place. awesome place, the church across the street, german fest with all the rides, all the parks filled with kids. the forest up the hills and playing down the hills. the Bamberg Barons high school and football games. Outdoor swimming pool and autobaun drives. I sometimes cry to because i miss the good days. I first seen Mortal Kombat in that theater and Romeo and Juliet with Leo D, even Rumble in the BROX in that movie theater.
We lived in Bamberg from 1957 to late 1960 and our father was commander of Battery B, 613th Fld Arty, 2 280 cannons, which could shoot a sub atomic shell. We lived up in the senior officers quarters and had a great time growing up there. It was a great posting and we saw a lot of Europe as a result. Love the videos and I can recognize a lot but a lot was added.
I was station there with HHB 3/1 FA from 1987-1990 my 2nd oldest Daughter was born in Bamberg Hospital lots of memory, started for the German team in Basketball there. Loved my time there.
I was in your battalion from 89-91 but in C battery. I did hang out in the basement of HB though since I was on the tactical nuke team and our practice vault was there.
we were there at the same time as you. i was 7-9th grade. dad was top in 7/6th INF. when the draw down started we tried to stay but they sent back state side anyway.
Never thought I'd say it; but I miss the Mailed Foot March even. A co. 1/54 Inf. (July 1987 - July 1989). Loved it there; 4-star barracks... the locals were nice... good beer.... good joes... dynamite German food... good beer... beautiful summertime sunsets... bad decisions making for good stories... more good beer... Anyone here from the northern post sector remember when that track (M113) coming from the wash-racks, busted loose and was out of control?... turning in an ever widening circles?... punching 2 holes in the East sector walls and the West sectors walls?... and running over a Chevy van and BMW in the process?...
I remember that. I was in the 3rd Battalion 35th Armor. The thing was running wide open when it finally hit a tree. Somebody jumped in it and killed the engine. That brings back memories...
Bamberg has always been symbolic to me as my first overseas tour in 2001-2006 assigned to 240 QM Supply CO/71st CSB/7 CSG aka 16 Sustainer BDE. I am a die hard Bamberg supporter and will always believe that it was the best post ever! It is situated center mass of many posts and attractions certainly during that time. Hate to hear of its closing but would do it all over again if it was possible! I will definitely be visiting in the near future!
Hey I am Patrick I am part of the federal police from Germany and I want to see the old Warner barracks. My question is: Do you have any old pictures from the barracks? We are living there now and I am interested in the using before us. Greetings from Patrick
I just seen this looking up photos for Warner Barracks. Since discovering Google Maps, i been returning back to where I started my military career. I came to the 1st AD back in December 1976. First unit was HHC 3/35th Armor. Then several months later around March of 77 HHC 3rd BDE (Bulldog). Our units then were 1st/52nd Inf. (one five Zoo), 2nd/78th FA, 1st/54th Inf and then 3 3 5 Armor. Across the street was 2nd/ 2 Cav. We called that part of the barracks the new post. Old post was the red brick buildings that housed 82nd Engineer BN, c/123rd Maintenance BN, 6th/10th FA , a platoon of division MPs. and various other small units. I wanted to say there was another FA unit but almost 40yrs since last there did me in. Of course the missing walls, new parks, track and other construction greatly changes things. it is only in the last ten years I have appreciated what I experienced there. Truly great times and sorry to see the post go.
I was there back in the late 70's and the place has changed so much. I don't see the track field where I used to run two miles every day and five miles on Friday. I loved Germany, the countryside, the old and new parts of towns, trains to cities, Oktoberfest, beer! West Germany is a beautiful country!
spent a few years here as a child. i fell in love with the town and people so much, i've declared it my hometown. watching this i noticed no cars so i looked it up and discovered it's closed :( my first love was there. was there from 92 to 95. still remember even the tv we had there, same as what we had in iraq whenever i stopped into the CP, after following my familys footsteps and went army. damn i miss that place. especially in winter. our housing was atop a big hill that had some kind of concrete in the grass. we would ride cardboard boxes down it from boxes we got behind the px
I was there around that time also as a kid. 91-97. I was in the 7th grade by the time i went back to Colorado Springs Co. I loved every single bit of germany, i went to bamberg elemetry to the high school bamberg barrens 7th-12th. had my 1st crushes there student and teachers. I use to live also on the top of a hill where we was next to a forest and played around all the parks that where there. Also going to the bamberg fest eating real try gyros. I new almost everyone, my best friend over there name was Michael Gardner spoke good english and german. I remember those hills that was the good old days. watching AFN t.v. and every other channel was in german. Remember the gummies and schnitzels real bratwurst that hung off the bun. I talk about that part of my childhood alot because i really want to go back and see it and vist. sadly all things good must come to a end while we are here.
Late answer , but maybe you'll read it: today the Warner barracks area is separated, part of it is used as refugee housing, the other part is now a center for basic and advanced training of the German federal police, so basically a police academy. I'm stationed there for 2,5 years since March for my basic training in the federal police and there are still many relics of the US-troops in there that we see every day.
Nice areal views, thanks for the film! My father was stationed in Bamberg from 63-65. Nice to see school again and the building in which we lived. I was shocked though, that the movie theater is gone, replaced by a gas station. The "first woods" were razed and a playground placed there. The gate was moved to include the housing area and a large round-about built. AYA building is still there, maybe with an additional building. School buildings seem to have received additional buildings. All the trees seem so have grown. There's now a small park next to the main parking in front of the snack bar - my father's track park was once located there. The EES Garage (before AFEES) seems gone. Chapel is still at the same location.
I agree with DJ Cook, doesn't look that much the same, I left in '85. I am actually in Bamberg right now as I write this. Access to the base is completely cut off (has been pretty much since 9/11). From what I've gotten from the locals it's being used as migrant housing which seems like a really good idea for now, esp with the recent influx of people fleeing the ISIS freaks. Anyway the town still rocks, nice people, great food and the best beer in the world. Less than 3 Euros for a half liter, puts the US to shame - $6-$7 for a shaker glass "craft beer" at home...WTF? Auf Wiedersehen in Bamberg!
I also lived there from Oct 1989-May 1991. We lived on base in temp housing then settle in the apartments on Weißenburgstraße near the Super 1000 markt and AOK building. I was in 6th grade when I got there.
dude. I was there 87-90, 7th 8th 9th grade .... did you know mike smith and cary bedoin?can see my building for a moment at 1:23 on the right side of the street. had playground in back. did you live on the first floor on the right stair well?
@@eaudesolero5631 Very cool. Not that I remember. I think we lived on the 3rd floor of the building directly in front of the park. I remember hollering out the window during huge games of war. Robby Robinson was one name I will always remember. Also, a Nick Mayle moved to my hometown, hung out with him a lot back in those days! Floods of memories
@@WestCOMtnMan i used to play big miniatures games with the guys, battletech, role master, twilight 2000, megatraveller others ... was a weekly thing we'd stay up all night at someones place, or get one of the party rooms on the end of the top attic floor. my dad caught us up there once with a bunch of booze and watched as we all had to pour it out the dormer window. usually sneak out and wander the city. there was a chaplains son named james. and there was willie and samantha heemsoth next door to me.
I know it's been a long, long time but we were there at the same time. I think I was only in Bamberg from most of '93 - '94 and came up from Erlangen A 94th FA. I was in 2/14 though. Were you 13P or 13M?
A few things looked familiar. Co. B 82nd Engineers 1976-1979. The gate next to where the PX was was real familiar. If memory serves, there used to be a gas station out there...it was a life saver for those midnight runs for munchies.
I was there in 91-97 good times there. I was a kid going to bamberg Elementry school k-6th to middle/high school 7-12th. I miss it alot everyone in there life needs to go to Europe at least one time in there life. I lived on top of a hill in a cul-de-sac area close to the elementry school and up the hill from the high school Bamberg Barons. I used to go to the church over there on base, movies, px to rent vhs tapes. remember the commissary and the barber shop the skating ring the school football teams and basketball teams. I remember going to Neuenburg when they had a base. Wiesbaden, K-town, and Augsburg. I remember going on the tours to Paris, Poland, and Italy. good food, good places, good history. Went to the Poland Concentration Camps crazy and aerie. had alot of friends over there Rudy, and Ramon Bassett, Larry Walker, Donald "The Doc" Doctor, Roy and Reginald Norwood, Michael, and Steven Gardner, Maurice, Michelle, Marcel Walton, Cassadra Oldacher, Sharnah Hayewood, Aaron and Shade Ahrens, Juliet and her twin sister. Just in case anyone that i know come to this page and reads anything they will have some idea who wrote this. Hit my profile up or reply back.
I was station there from 1967 to 1969 and loved it all. Lived in civilian housing on Zollner Strasser just across from the PX. Still have my 1/75th coffee mug with an 8 inch howitzer photo on it.
Thats actually so sad to watch. My husband was stationed ther with the 504th at Muna in the early 90's. Bamberg was my favorite place to live out of all the places we've been. I remember our second time there. We were only supposed to be there for a short period, so they put us in the temps apartments under the roof. We had the entire length of the building to ourselves. Best place to live, ever. (Except for the stairs😂)❤
I was stationed at Graf , loved it there. Graf will never be closed. I was also at Rivers Barracks Gieesen West Germany 78-91. All three kaserns we're closed and are now in ruins except Rivers Barracks it was turned into housing for refugees and the motor pool is a car dealership.
This brings me memories! The way how I remember in February 1984-June 1985, I was staying at one apartment (I think 3 Nickalus-Marie) that was built for the Americans, but sat on the German side. I was staying on the third floor. From where I stayed, I can see the barracks across a major highway, and see the base where my father was stationed. There was a gate, which remained closed for the most part. I think it opened once or a few times. I remember the commissary, the PX, the mini shopping strip inside the building. On the other side, there was a taxi stand. My overall stay, I didn't like living in Bamberg so much, as a kid. I had to walked a long distance to BES. I been teased a lot from the other kids that were living in the same apartment with me I attend to military school. I fired back at them they attend to German school and they have to be in school on Saturday! I do recall attending to DYA all the time, stay there forever! It was pretty much my hangout spot as a 8 & 9 year old kid during that time!
My husband and I were there from 1972_1975 .I lived about five minutes from army base on Amspinster st .am trying to find my German friends that I rented from if they are still living I am going back for a visit .the proplem is I don,t know how about to find them .can anybody help me please ?
A beautiful video, but Warner Barracks looks so different from what I remember. I was an MP there in the mid to late 1970s and patrolled every part of that base, yet so little looks familiar to me today.
The building in the close-up zoom-out at 5:00 had 82nd Engineer Bn HQ on the right. I was S-1 on the 2nd floor 87-89, and then moved across the street (to the right) and Commanded HHC 89-91.
I was stationed at Warner Barracks January 1966 - August 1968. Love the City and the people. Warner Barracks, from what I understand was closed and turned over tothe German army in September of 2015 and the airfield in September 2016. So now Bamberg is totally German again.
I worked with Capt Army Ranger, Capt. Bob Echols developing the Army's first CDAAC, Community Drug and Alcolohol Assistant Center, in '73-74. Not sure if it is still there, but what a grand job that was for a 24 year old clinical psychologist. It was the best job I ever had and what great guys!
Melvin thank you so much for your service. That job was the best job I ever had! Loved the camaraderie despite the horrible times. So great to know you were there too. Sending blessings
H Co 2/2 ACR 72--74. I have been back twice. The last time was 2014. The base was closed, but showed my son my barracks. I spent a lot of time in Coburg for border duty. It was a beautiful city.
Was there for 3 years. 1 year with 3rd CS Bn. 2 years in HHC 1/52 Zoo Mech Inf with LTC Jallo. Lots of great stories and time off with volks marchs, beer etc. My oldest graduated HS there.
Maiden name is Kellner. Dad was a Col, we lived up on "snob hill". Lived there 1962-64. Went to Jr high there. Many great memories. The AYA...oh gosh, a great time.
served there 16 months, '69-'72, commanded 2nd Plt., Co. B, 1st Bn., 54th Inf., 4th Armored Div.; also German-American Liaison officer Feb. '72-Apr. '72. Beautiful city, so much to see!
Loved the Video, I was of course also there 98 to 01. I loved Bamberg just as much as I loved Furth and Nurnberg where I was from 86 to 89. Daughter born in Erlangen Frau Klinik. I loved everything about German from the food to the people and the many Volks Marches that I and the family did. I am saddened that it is closed but all things must pass I guess. Considering your close if you ever happen by how about making a video like this of Montieth Barracks in Furth. Thanks for the video.
carl wagner I arrived there on NewYears 80-81 at night. and some guys took to Maute Keller’s drinking. That morning we had an alert. I thought we were going to war. I was only 18.
Same here I loved it there....HHC 6/6 Infantry Spc Darrin Spell. LTC Michael McGhee, 1st SGT Morgan, SSG Daniel Freeman, SSG Arce,.............1989-1991 DEACTIVATED.....LAST OF THE BEST
HHC ENG BDE From 3rd to 1st Infantry Divisions. From the Supply Room to BDE S4 bldg 7000. I spent 6 years there and my son was born there also. It breaks my heart to see it as a ghost town. At least it will stand and they didn't tear everything down. Forever will be missed. I always hope to return to see two families that stayed Belts and Nelson and one in Schweinfurt Mitchell's. Good bye Warrner..... SAPPERS ATTACK
Nice video shooting! A lot has changed in the 32 years since I was stationed there. I always wanted to go back to visit but wasn't sure if I'd be able to ever again. These pics really make it possible to see whatever progress that was made landscape wise at least. I think the entrance to the barracks was on Gartenstadt. BTW, would you have information on the 1st and 54th Infantry Division? Is it still activated??
+D.J. Cook I was in the 2nd /54th inf from May 68 to Oct 68. Hated it. Put in a 10-49 and transferred back to Vietnam. Mickey Mouse playing soldier. US Army NON-VietNam Vets were treated badly by our own. Fok em. Went back to nam
Bamberg was beautiful and after my 1st tour in VietNam I deserved a relaxed stay. But the Assholes at HHC 2/54th inf. treated me like shit. Then transfered me to C Company which was 90 percent black. Never knew there was racism in the service till then. Loved C company but my orders came down after 6 months and I went back to Nam.
We recently jumped over the fence and walked through the entire empty southern Part of the Base in the Video from 04:10 (we Went into the Theater, Shopping center, supermarket, Kindergarden and the currency Exchange code Level bravo haha) Was funny to read the Tags in the Theatre of the Last US soldiers. So sad US left
Which Teater? One was the Wagon Wheel and I can't remember the other. I really need to remember it as I had to stand guard duty around it more than once. I was at the 1/13 Charlie company 1976-1977.
Yes, I had a friend named Dan Smith who was in the 504th in 1976-1978. I remember the unofficial company motto at the time was, "If we can't fix it, it ain't broke." Sound familiar?
my dad served in bamberg in 1975 - 79, i can't recall which company he was in.. i was a teenager i had fond memories of playing basketball at the gymnasium and in the adjacent bubble gym, going to the movie theatre, the cafeteria eating with friends and hanging at the teen club.. as teens my friends and i would go to this lil german store and buy all sorts of gummy candies and cookies. one day the old lay that ran the store sold us a big bottle of wine, ahh the good ole days. i went to Nuremberg high school in my 10th grade.....then back to the states fort campbell, ky

+Nick Richard I was stationed in A company 1975-1978.
Nick Richard I was in B 3/1 FA, and then HHC 3rd Brigade, 88-91. The old post has changed alot. It looks deserted now. Was it closed?
Hey I am Patrick
I am part of the federal police from Germany and I want to see the old Warner barracks. My question is: Do you have any old pictures from the barracks? We are living there now and I am interested in the using before us.
Greetings from Patrick
vance dunham, 2/2 ACR , F TROOP, BORDER PATROL, SERVED IN HOF AND COBERG 1970-73 , Harry Blehm and I had a great tour.
I was stationed there back in 1986-1988. It's amazing how much it's changed.
I worked in arms room in basement hhc 3/35 73-74
Brothers, I was across the road, 2/2 Cav 82-83. Never forget my time there.
E trp 1982-84
I was stationed there from 2009 to 2013. It had the best gym I have ever been in and it was clean and beautiful
Im gonna have to get drunk and watch this again. I dont recognize any of this sober. HHB Divarty 98-99
Wow, that takes me to good memories. Father stationed there 86-91. This is where I grew up, amazing. Thanks for sharing!
I think we lived on Hauptsmoorstrasse on base after will lived in Kotsch off base for the first half.
Damn I really miss that place A 2/14 FA & A 3/1 FA from DEC '89-AUG '93 😢😢😢. The food,clothes,clubs and women 😍😍😍.
I know it's been a long, long time but we were there at the same time. I think I was only in Bamberg from most of '93 - '94 and came up from Erlangen A 94th FA. I was in 2/14 though. Were you 13P or 13M?
Hey man I was there in 93-95 3/1 fa.
Section 8 Sgt Biffel and Sgt Davis was section chief.
Was there 91 - 98 HHB 3-1 then changed to 1-6 under 1ID
I was in A 3/1 from Sept 92-May 93
A few things looked familiar. Co. B 82nd Engineers 1976-1979. The gate next to where the PX was was real familiar. If memory serves, there used to be a gas station out there...it was a life saver for those midnight runs for munchies.
Hi Mitch, we were roommates for three yrs. m. miller (phil)
@@michaelmiller-e9mHi!!! Another line doggie pops up! I have been in contact with a few from Second and third platoon over the years.
For two years Bamberg was my home. l loved it there. I am sad it is all gone....
Sorry to see it is gone now. Had a great time when I was stationed there. 1st Battalion, 75th FA, Nuclear Weapons Specialist, 1974 - 76.
JOHN ENNIS i was with HHB 1/75th FA also but in 1985 thru 1987....
I too was in 1/75FA from 83-87, SVC Btry, PLL clerk in the motor pool.
My parents and I where stationed there in 73-76' also. Dad was in supply. The only thing that looks familiar was the chapel were his service was held.
I was with HQ 1/75 FA 1972 TO 1975 supply sgt/armor. My name Norman Geffers
Served there from Feb 1992 to Mar 1994 with the 259th PSC under 5th Corps. Great post, great city.
I was a kid there in 92-97, great time there.
Hey I was there from 83-86 I lived by the dya also .. was 10-13 played alot of baseball on the last field..
when we drove from Sembach Air Base to Hof, we stopped here for lunch....I ought to have made fotos but...
Hof here. :) now in South Carolina.
I used to live right outside of Warner when I was young. I love Bamberg.♥️ This base is closed now...
My husband and I were there from 1972_1975 .I lived about five minutes from army base on Amspinster st .am trying to find my German friends that I rented from if they are still living I am going back for a visit .the proplem is I don,t know how about to find them .can anybody help me please ?
I was stationed there in 87-89,. Eco 1st BN 54th inf div(mech) mailed foot.
Was there in 81 still looks the same, wish i would have went back to visit my old friend before it closed, fun memory
I was there 1979, Bravo Co. 3/35 amour. So different now.
You had your work cut out for you there, i was there 3/35 armor 73-74
Melvin thank you so much for your service. That job was the best job I ever had! Loved the camaraderie despite the horrible times. So great to know you were there too. Sending blessings
Great job... Brings back many memories....
I would Love to see Wildflecken again...
I was mainly over in the Cav side when I was there, 2/2 ACR F Troop. 85-86".
H Co 2/2 ACR 72--74. I have been back twice. The last time was 2014. The base was closed, but showed my son my barracks. I spent a lot of time in Coburg for border duty. It was a beautiful city.
4:29 The recycling point used to be our Motorpool, B 201ST Detachment 82ND Engineer MST.
Was there for 3 years. 1 year with 3rd CS Bn. 2 years in HHC 1/52 Zoo Mech Inf with LTC Jallo.
Lots of great stories and time off with volks marchs, beer etc. My oldest graduated HS there.
I spent almost 3 years in HHC 1/52 Spent a year in HHC working maint. then the rest in Service Section .
Maiden name is Kellner. Dad was a Col, we lived up on "snob hill". Lived there 1962-64. Went to Jr high there. Many great memories. The AYA...oh gosh, a great time.
i had a friend up on snob hill. i think his dad was a full bird too. but this was 87-90. a little after your time there.
Home sweet home 2nd and 2nd cav. Border patrol 1984
Good ole 2/2 cav, they had Bradley's and we had 113s. Graf, hoensfelt, wildflicken.
served there 16 months, '69-'72, commanded 2nd Plt., Co. B, 1st Bn., 54th Inf., 4th Armored Div.; also German-American Liaison officer Feb. '72-Apr. '72. Beautiful city, so much to see!
Oops, got the year wrong. All '72 should be '71. They say memory is the 2nd thing to go; I forget the 1st thing.
Thanks for the video.
u mean frauen klinik...erlangen and Bamberg miss all those Americans so so much...

John Adams Wow! What a thing to have to do!!
