I think James is a novel that stands well on its own merit. And if a person doesn't want to read Huckleberry Finn, I don't think they need to. This isn't school. Life's too short to read books you don't want to. Having said that, I think one's reading experience is richer by having read both novels. What made James great for me is seeing where Everett chose to diverge from the original novel, where he stays close, and to consider why he felt it necessary to make the changes that he did. Sometimes he re-contextualizes parallel scenes, sometimes he invents new ones, and sometimes he blows Twain's text completely apart. I was fascinated by how he re-characterized a lot of the secondary characters to be more sinister and less white pleasing. And that ending is just wild in comparison to the original.

Yeah, the whole “Debut Novel” of an author who has a reasonable body of work in other ways seems to be a ridiculous marketing term, but I guess there are literary awards that use that designation as well and it helps to identify a work for that potential?

Rest in peace, Paul Auster. :( Congrats on your milestone! I have been avoiding commenting on this, but I have to disagree with how feel Jim is characterized in "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn". Yes, he is depicted as simple and trusting, but as the novel progresses, Twain imbues him with a deep intelligence, loyalty, talent as a storyteller, and so much integrity. I had problems with the book when I read it in high school, but they were problems that I believe Twain intended. "Huckleberry Finn" is often considered the prime example of the GREAT AMERICAN NOVEL (whatever that means). due to the idea of the journey the protagonist takes, not only the physical journey, but the growth journey from innocence to experience. At the beginning, Huck is a schemer much like Tom Sawyer. They are kids who don't really know the world. The whole book, when you look at it, is about Huckleberry Finn becoming a better, smarter, wiser person, largely because of his relationship with Jim. It also shows him gaining real empathy for Jim, and appreciating his humanity in a much more real way than he did at the beginning. I got so angry when Tom Sawyer came back in the story, because I wanted to smack him upside the head and say, "This stuff is not a game!" Not Tom's fault he hadn't learned that yet. But seeing it through Huck's eyes, the reader learns just how much Huck has learned. That's my two cents, anyway. I do know that so many other great American novels, some that I prefer over TAOHF, do owe a debt to the novel. "Catcher in the Rye" for example would likely not be the book it is if not following in Huck's footsteps, only Holden Caulfield doesn't have a Jim to help him learn, but spirals out on his journey into a breakdown. But I'm rambling. It is totally cool to not like the book and to DNF it, but I do think without reading it, it is difficult to get a full picture of what Mark Twain is doing with the character Jim, who is outwardly the most heroic character, and subtly the deepest.

Do you host the discord server? If so do you have a link for it? Just came back.home from Philadelphia and found myself getting 4 new books there, 3 of which I learned of from your channel lol. Looking forward to reading them.
    And congratulations on 15k!
