I live in the Yorkshire Dales and walk etc regularly. I have also done a fair amount of camping trail walking etc. As a rule of thumb, the nearer you are to the car park the more kit you will see people carrying, apart from the kids doing Duke of Edinburgh Awards who carry an entire house (poor sods). Some people are weighted down with new kit for what amounts to a short circular walk to the pub. Use common sense, some people seem to forget to pack that when they go walking. My advice,: 1) buy the best quality waterproof jacket and over trousers you can afford, minimum 10 thousand hydro static head, plus a buff, beanie and gloves. Buy stuff you can wear casually, so you get your money’s worth. If you buy cheap, you will end up only buying again after a while. Buy cheaper mid layers etc. Save money there 2) Remember you will get warm whilst walking and will sweat. You will get colder when you stop, so have something in your bag to slip on when you stop and don’t wear too much when walking. merino wool is good, it does not smell sweaty after a day or so. 3) wet and windy weather is a killer in the U.K., plan for this. Your not going to the artic or going to be attacked by bears so none of that kit, repellant, army knives blah blah blah is needed. You will be amazed what you will see people with. Wet and wind. Trust me. 4) Go out for an over nighter walk a good few miles somewhere not too rough and ambitious. Perhaps the South Downs or similar. You will soon work out what to ditch. Do this before going to the Lakes or Highlands. 5) decent trail shoes are fine for most things or lighter boots, vibram soles. Wear them a few times before you go out on your trip. 6) when planning your walking look at the height or elevation you will be walking at and plan for that. For example, in the Dales the snow line is around 300 metres, the tops are at around 500-600 metres. This means even in the summer you could be walking in a snow storm or gale force winds at 600 metres whilst 300 metres lower down, it’s just rain. Just to reiterate. This is the U.K., just plan for wind and rain. Being cold and uncomfortable for a few hours won’t kill you. Hypothermia will. If you going out in worse than this for the first time, join a club or take a course til you know what your doing.

I enjoy your channel. Thank you for your work in producing and submitting your channel. If you decide on hiking any of the trails here in the US, especially east coast, let us know. Northern Georgia, western NC are a days drive and we frequent them often. If we can be of any help, we certainly will do all we can to help you to getting out on our trails here.
Great to watch along and just started wild camping to see more of Scotland and maybe the UK eventually. Might need to check out the jacket video as it is the one item I am most lacking in. Anyway maybe I will start a YT channel to go with the camping. Anyhoo been binge watching quite a few of your videos especially on the Helm 2 as it is the tent I am considering after intially doing the £60 quid Darwin 2. Anyway have a great week etc. and cheers for sharing.

Great advice and tips Si…a little tip and something I like to do is to do a reccy, if you can, (if I’m camping local) to see if there’s a potential spot first before I go….cheers mate, ATB, Luke 👍
Simon great tips, at the moment with load of new people and living in a NT area I would add please don't set camp fires, or use those awful disposable BBQ's At some point you should advise major issue for many which is poo hehe
I walked for years without seeing the point in walking poles..until I bought some 🤔 a real life saver if your carying a heavy pack down steep rocky terrain 😉 one thing is wild camping actually illegal or just unlawful ? I'm mean the law says its illegal If its a gathering but does that cover a solo wild camp.. 🤔 I mean it doesn't matter either way if a land owner asks you to move on easier to just oblige..did sign a .gov petion a while ago as some MPs are pushing to effectively criminalise wild camping 😮
