    As cool and appropriate as Indy staying in 214 BC would've been, the theme of this movie is about overcoming grief and old age to be with your family, and him coming back to reunite with Marion, Sallah, and Helena and start living again is a perfect sendoff.

    The Antikythera mechanism (or Archimedes' dial, as this movie calls it) is a real archeological find that was discovered in1901. It's nothing like the movie depicts it, but it is significant in that it is the oldest known example of an analogue computer in history, dating back to the 2nd century BC. It's real-life purpose was to model the irregular orbit of the moon and predict eclipses decades in advance. If anyone is interested, there's a great video that goes into its history on BBC Reel's UA-cam channel.

    My dad saw the original movies when they first came out and he was really disappointed with the kingdom of Crystal skull, so I was really worried he wouldn’t like this one because Harrison Ford is old now which is one of the reasons he didn’t like the last movie. But to my surprise he loved this movie. He felt that it was a tribute to the original trilogy and he cried a bit when the movie ended and started to reminisce about the first time he saw the first movie ❤

    I don't think that the Spear of Destiny was fake. Both Indy and Voller note that it was made with a new alloy but what I can't get out of my head is that Indy, when he figured out that it was recent, he wonders, if everything else on the train was real, why would the spear be fake? There is a theory that the spear is made from the crashed plane and that is why it is made from a new alloy that didn't exist back then.

    I enjoyed this movie, but Spielberg’s presence as director is definitely missing IMHO. We’re a long way from the pacing and fun of the previous films. He did a much better job balancing the tone with action AND humor. These movies are supposed to be fun. Still, it’s great to have Indy back and I thought this movie had a strong story and a good cast.

    I just realized it is never explained how the NAZI scientist survived getting hit in the face by a metal pole and falling off a train without any visible lasting injuries. The character development for Indie is great, best part of the film. But the rest of the plot feels like it should've ended after the intro but kept going through unexplained magic. It feels like you start watching the end of another Indiana Jones movie with the intro and then the rest feels like a dream Indie is having.

    • @uzul42
      @uzul42 5 місяців тому +5

      All Indiana Jones movies had plot holes of varying degrees. For example in the first one it is never explained how Indie could survive the ride to the Nazi base on the outside of a submarine. The sub would have dived to keep the Ark hidden and even if Indie could somehow make his way inside there is no place to hide in a WW2 sub. Or in the third one it is never explained how the ancient knight could understand and speak modern English. Some small plot holes are forgivable.

    What I think really works about the supernatural element in this is the tight scope. The Ark of the covenant, the stone from ToD, even the holy grail all are very limited in scope. They’re the type of thing that in one use they show all they can do.
    The interdimensional aliens have a much larger implication. As does time travel as a concept, but here we see a bootstrap loop, a single gateway between two points in time. Its entire purpose is used up in this film.
    I think this helps it feel more like the original trilogy. There’s no larger implication to the uses or interactions with this element. Indy goes back in time, meets Archimedes, and is knocked unconscious and brought back to his present. A solid adventure.

    • @Esafc-lb2sg
      @Esafc-lb2sg 5 місяців тому +5

      I feel like the Supernatural element in this is so much less effective than the original trilogy.
      The thing that connects the Ark, the Stones, and the Grail is that they are the works of higher, unimaginable powers, works too powerful for us to use and understand.
      The mechanism in this was just built by a clever human, it’s not anywhere near as mystical and interesting.

    • @brianburkhardt3692
      @brianburkhardt3692 5 місяців тому

      @@Esafc-lb2sg that’s fair. I guess it would have been better if the device had been discovered instead of created. A device that can create a gateway between time, but not one constructed by the person using it. Still, I think their scopes of use are similar. The arc can kill whoever is looking at it when it’s opened, the stones can be put in a specific statue, the grail can only be accessed in one way and probably won’t be accessed again.

    • @Esafc-lb2sg
      @Esafc-lb2sg 5 місяців тому +2

      @@brianburkhardt3692 I think anything connected to the Ancient Greek or Roman worlds was always going to be difficult to pull off. I agree with you on limiting the device to one destination being a stronger idea than just allowing you to go anywhere.
      I just miss the idea of having to be worthy of using something. The supernatural powers of the first four punish the users because they find them inherently unworthy. The Ark punishes Nazis and Belloq for their poisonous ideology and greed, the stones punish Mola Ram for his perversion of their intended use, the grail punishes those who wish for the glory of eternal life and greed, and the interdimensional beings punish Spalko for her arrogance and presumption. The dial doesn't really have that aspect, the villains aren't judged by a higher power, they are random casualties.

I love not being american and not having to care about woke or witch hunt. Cinema is a genuine experience for us, I sit and I care about nothing else. The industry is going downhill because people don't do that anymore. Everyone here loved it, especially people over 60. Voller isn't hit by the arm itself, he's hit by the canvas hood on the end. Mind you, at that speed canvas would still pack quite a punch but it wouldn't necessarily be something you can't survive.

    We absolutely call distance on water, something different. Nautical miles, or knots, may as well be water miles. Each nautical mile is one minute of latitude, as such it is slightly more than a statute (land) mile at 1.15 statute miles per knot.

    I liked it a lot more than crystal skull, but i wish they hadn't called it the antykethera device because that is a real device in a museum that looks nothing like that but was able to predict the position of planets. Archymedes dial was a good name and it could have been connected to the antykthera device, but not have it identified as the antykthera device itself. Alternatively, they could have had the antykthera device be a component in it (the antykthera device in the museum is a device made of rusted gears and is an analog mechanical computer, it looks like it was in salt water way too long).

    I went to see this movie on the 4th of July with my dad and sister, and I greatly enjoyed it! I felt like that was the ending that I also would've loved to have seen for Han Solo and Leia in Star Wars if they had been able to have closure. I enjoyed both the returning characters and the new characters, and I always enjoy a good time travel story, so it was fun for me!
    I was afraid of that one scene in Temple of Doom as a kid, and I still have not finished that one to this day, so the other three were my trilogy. I never had any issues with the 4th movie as a kid, and I didn't know that people had issues with that one until people started talking about this movie, much like my relationship with the Star Wars Prequels.
    I also didn't realize how much bigger that one guy was than everyone else watching it in theaters, so it was really funny after I finally noticed what you were talking about.

    There will always be haters so I know this movies no different. But IN MY OPINION this fits perfectly into the story of Indy and I’ve heard a lot of people acting like they are trying to replace him with his Goddaughter but that’s not even hinted at in this movie. If anything it was a strong last ride for Indy and keeps it open where he could go on or could be done but no matter what he IS Indiana Jones. I would love to see more Indy if it’s well made but I don’t think it needs to be old Indy. If they want let’s cast a young Indy and have future movies of old Indy telling old stories.

I'd rank it just above Temple of Doom as the second-weakest in the series. This was fun, and I’m glad we got to see your initial reaction, but it’s a little surprising to me that a bunch of diehard SW fans aren’t necessarily also big enough IJ fans to have seen the movie in a theater upon its release. Then again, it always seems weird to me how SW fandom seems to be so self-contained, focusing just on SW, as opposed to spilling out into broader Lucasfilm fandom in general. For me, loving Star Wars (and Indiana Jones) led to a general interest in all of Lucas / Lucasfilm’s stuff, and I’m always a little nonplussed when someone who lives, sleeps, eats, and breathes Star Wars has never seen American Graffiti, say.
