I forgot to mention dealership support. It played a huge role in my decision: the CC dealer is much closer and historically, has treated me much more as a person than the Deere dealer has.
Excellent review. These two tractors definitely go head to head and I own the Cub myself. I too had a JD 325 so this was close to home for me! Thanks for doing such a good job and time to lay it out for everyone. I love my Cub. I have the manual sleeve hitch and it works very well. I have very hilly property, 3 acres, that I mow and tend to and it works great. My 300 ft gravel drive needs leveled occasionally and I use a box scraper for that. I have used a Brinley plow to re do a large portion of my yard and the tractor did a great job of pulling the blade through the hillside of sideways and up and down. The tractor has been a beast! I agree that the hitch area is cheaply done and I have bent the metal as well. Overall, I love the Cub!

Great review. These two tractors are definitely a head to head comparison. I too owned a JD 325 tractor and now I have the Cub Cadet. You hit all the major points. I have a sleeve hitch for my Cub and it works well. I have several attachments to service my 300 ft gravel driveway and even used my Brinly plow to redo my lawn on the side of a huge hill. 3 acres to mow up and down hills and the Cub has been flawless. I actually love my Cub! The one complaint is the cheap steel rear hitch area however. I too bent the steel and the hole is now larger as I pull and drag things. Thanks again for this direct comparison of the two popular garden tractors. Especially for the price, Cub wins hands down.
Thank You very much for your kind words and your honest comparison. I still have a very rugged “trailer” hitch that fits the sleeve hitch. I’m still deliberating a sleeve hitch for the Cub, but also an Easy Rake. The Easy Rake comes with its own hitch, so still much to think about. Thank You again.
Great review. I own a 2016 Cub GSX as well. I currently have 110 hours on it. I love the tractor alot. I use it for mowing and snow blowing a 500ft paved driveway with a bercomac blower. I was nervous about the rear hitch because I haul with it as well. When I installed the bagger it came with a bracket that is installed under the hitch and also slides into the frame rails for extra support. I have hauled 500 lbs and it has not moved the hitch plate at all. I was told by my dealer you can purchase the bracket separately and is needed if you are towing more than 250 lbs.

Dealer support and attitude helped me with my decision as well. I contacted a local JD dealer and asked about a couple of mowers and they pretty much blew me off. A CC dealer roughly 50 miles away bent over backwards to get my business.

Great comparison, I really enjoyed this video. In 2015 I wanted a new GT with hydraulics but with a 42" deck and John Deere didn't/wouldn't work with me with one on the X500 series without jumping thru hoops. I already own a much older shaft drive Cub so I bought the XT3 GS 42" model. I'm happy with that decision and it has been a really good machine thus far. The only major negative with mine is the manual steer as it's a bear when turning and especially negotiating around obstacles. My old wrists/arms are sore after a couple of hours of mowing but I wasn't completely sold on the eps and electric deck lift.
Btw, I just read a post in a forum that Cub is discontinuing the XT3 series which came not only as a surprise but a disappointment. It looks like Cub/MTD may be getting out of the GT business.
That is very disappointing indeed. It’s too bad because I really like it and that differential lock is a real game changer. I love the 42” deck because I’m able to get through and around obstacles. If I want to mow a big area, I’ve got a 60” 3-point mower. Thank You for watching
hi tom, love your channel esp the old tractor advertisements, i grew up in a little ct town our closest neighbor was a dairy farm i spent every minute i could there and the owner treated me like a grandkid he loved farmals h and m every time he finished a farm journal he gave it to me , i would spend hours looking at advertisements, as i time went buy he retired i got married and moved a town over on a few acres so i started buying tractors Fcubs-8ns-bolens sears simplicity IH cubs and lots of wheelhorses like dad had , i still own 2 a 73 and 76 and hands down think wh made the best garden tractors ever, i still have a 210 deere and a one series with loader and tiller and many more implements , i mow with a x500 its been great first issue just happened at 515hrs and 10 years old the main drive belt idler pulleys went, boy that was fun to repair its a good tractor I'm not happy with the snow plow design its mounting and having to add a piston for lift or lift with foot pedal , hands down wheelhorse had a superior design i swear their 10hp could out plow this 24hp but as far as modern ill stick to deere never hard to find parts for one reason and pretty dependable thanks again love your channel

Great video. I have a 2007 Cub Cadet GT 2550 with shaft drive and Kohler 22HP engine. One thing I found out right away, because of the way the horizontal engine in mounted, the air filter needs cleaning after every lawn cutting. Overall, the tractor has been a very good machine. The Cub Cadets have great cutting decks. The cast iron rear axle is really built strong, made for the long term. I would love to have a new machine, but the prices have just gotten too expensive. I have a Simplicity Legacy XL 4x4 with the Kawasaki liquid cooled commercial engine that I use for snow removal in the winter. Great tractor. It has a 60 in floating deck, but I use the Cub Cadet 50 in deck with the mulching kit for cutting the lawn. The dealer close to me no longer sells Simplicity but still sells Cub Cadet along with X Mark and Toro 0 turn machines. If one really wants to cut lawn in a hurry, then the 0 turn machines are the way to go. Last year my brother bought a new X Mark with the 60 in deck and adjustable floating seat. He loves it. He really loves the seat compared to his older X Mark that didn't have it. Those 0 turns will beat you to death because they travel so fast when cutting the lawn. The floating seat is a great invention, especially for the ones cutting lawn for a living.
they are doing a great job at pricing everything out of reach for most of us it seems. the display on m one tells you to clean the filter, but its not backlit and can be difficult to read. thank you for watching

I own a 2021 Husqvarna TS354XD. I absolutely love it and it constantly continues to blow my mind with just how much of a little beast it can be! Now I have definitely quite extensively modified and upgraded mine to the max, which absolutely has contributed to what it has been capable of doing. The newer Husqvarna GTs do have their one downfall with the weak frame issue. However if you are a deciently capable DIYer then you can fairly easily overcome that issue and strengthen the frame to where it's more than capable of doing anything you want it to do. To me personally i don't think you can possibly find a better GT in it's class for the money... let me repeat that, For The Money! No, out of the box it's not going to compete with a X700 series JD. What it does give you though is an absoulely excellent base to build off of for literally thousands of dollars less than all of it's competitors. It does by far come with the best deck on the market and the seat and stearing wheel are by far the nicest available of any GT. After having done the upgrades I've done I would now put mine up against any other GT you can throw at it. So overall in the end if you are a DIY capable person you can end up with a top grade beast of a garden tractor for thousands less, even after the upgrades, than you would have to pay for some of it's competitors. Oh and I almost forgot the most important part... It's Orange!!! Which we all know beats puke green and yellow any day of the week! Orange Tractor Pride!!! 🚜🚜🚜😁
Great review Tom. Personally, I don’t own either. When I got my garden tractor, I was at a Husqvarna dealership and noticed the Simplicity Broadmoor. Suddenly, I was back at square one! Two things I knew at the time were, first, I wanted something I could pull like you note…heavy loads. In particular, my log splitter. So I was looking for something with a beefier back end than a Sears Craftsman or Poulan. But I didn’t find that anywhere. Until I saw the simplicity. VERY rugged backend! Second, I knew I was not paying JD prices although I wanted a machine that would be the last machine I’d buy in my lifetime. So I knew I was not going to be paying 1-2 thousand! And again, simplicity hit the right middle ground spot at 3,400.00. That was two years ago. Today, that same machine, is $5,200.00!! I never thought I’d be paying that much for a lawn mower, but I also had experience only with Sears and Poulan stuff.
I’ve gotta tell you, I’m not that impressed with the simplicity! It has turf tires, and I hate them! ANY degree of moisture, and traction goes away completely! I almost, ALMOST, wish now I’d have just gone with the craftsman and saved 1500 bucks!! Because in about 6 weeks, I should have my new Kioti!! Anyway, I think JD, today and for probably the last 30 years, are way overpriced. Final thought…dealership relationship. I’m very disappointed in the dealership I got the simplicity at in Brentwood, NH. But so far, I’m very pleased with the Kioti dealership, Concord Tractor in Chichester, NH. Dealership relationships are absolutely key in such things. Almost as important as the price. Thanks for sharing your expertise with these two machines. I trust someone will benefit from it!
I know where both of those are. I had considered the former for a Simplicity, but decided against it because they were kind of far away, a new dealership, and just about as expensive as a John Deere. Kioti are a very good tractor from what I understand. I didn’t check the one you’re speaking about when I was shopping, the dealership in Lebanon apparently was too busy to assist me and wouldn’t return my calls or answer my emails, so I bought my Mahindra and Cub from the same dealership

My buddy bought his there, but now uses Concord. It’s too bad because they are about 10 minutes away and if loved to have gone there…but there’s that dealership relationship blowing up customers!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but MTD currently manufactures the entire Lawn & Garden tractor line-up for the following brands in 2023: Murray, Troy Built, Craftsman & Cub Cadet. Most differences between MTD's 4 brands and model line-ups are purely cosmetic, with a few distinct exceptions worth mentioning.
Lowest MSRP is the Murray MT100 w/500cc Briggs, 42" deck, gear drive, 13" high back seat, full cleat turf tires @ $1,999. The Craftsman T-100 w/344 cc Briggs, 38" deck, gear drive, 6" high back seat, hollow cleat tuff tires. (Significantly less tractor) costs $2,039. You have to jump 2 Craftsman model sizes @ $2139 to get a 500cc Briggs and 4 Craftsman model sizes @ $2,439 to get a 13" seat and full cleat tires.
While the John Deere S170 & S180 does put keyed 12" wheels & 22" rear tires on a weak K46 hydro transaxle. MTD takes deception to a higher level on their 12" wheel 22" tire models by adding rear hubs with 4 lug nuts on a weak k46 rear end with 3/4" dia. axle.
But IMO, there's no greater MTD manufactured rip-off and disparity then when comparing the Craftsman T-3200 to the Cub Cadet XT2 SLX54. Both have the same 725 cc Kohler, K-46 hydro transaxle, 54" stamped deck, 15" fancy stitched seat, 22" rear tires. However, the Craftsman T-3200 is unique with the tightest turning radius of any tractor, bar none. Tighter than any John Deere, Simplicity, Husqvarna, anybody. The Craftsman T-3200 has large stability handles integrated on both rear fenders and a toolbox. Cub XT2 SLX54 has no handles nor toolbox. Craftsman T-3200 has larger seat suspension springs and IMO the best-looking, largest looking, tractor MTD makes in 2023.
I've sat on both.
The Craftsman T-3200 is $3,299 @ Lowes.
The Cub Cadet XT2 SLX54 is $4,199 ($900 more) @ Lowes (I think) Tractor Supply, A & E Power
My research, for what it's worth.
I was disappointed with Cub Cadet in that Stanley Black & Decker owns a pretty large amount of Cub Cadet and they’re going to push their battery-operated line hard. I obviously wrote to Cub Cadet telling them that people who bought Cub Cadet shaft-driven tractors still wanted a quality gasoline engine and were usually yard enthusiasts who didn’t need a compact tractor. I asked them why they discontinued it and they were quiet. My dealership is obviously disappointed because they’ve sold Cub Cadet since 1985. I could have just bought a Deere, but they’re going to screw over everything too

Since my neuropathy became gangrene and I lost my right leg (above the knee) in January. Discharged me 2-days post-op without any pain medication. ZERO! Government controls that now. (Peasant punishment for electing Trump)
As a guy who's never paid to have my oil changed, hiring someone to mow my lawn seems strange. It's not the money. It's the principle of independence. I've considered a robot. I'd still have to get someone to set up the obstacle course. Only people to do it here, is a company that installs invisible dog (God spelled backwards) fences. But they are 30 miles away in Kansas.
I could drive a gear drive transaxle. No right side pedals. Do you know who makes the transaxle for a low-end tractor? Not the General Transmission plastic CVT. The aluminum housed gear drive. If so, what is the strength compared to a k-46?
Oh , I am terribly sorry to hear this. I’m sorry I missed it earlier. John Deere did have a gear drive on its lowest end, but not any longer. I think Craftsman makes a T110? It’s 7 speeds. Also the t100by Crsftsman. The transmission is a Spicer Dana most likely and I e heard they’re better than the k46j

@@LedgemereHeritageFarm Thanks. I assumed the typo. I also had a hunch the K46 was weaker than the little gear drive. Here's why. I moved to KC MO FY-2000. Bought a new house, I still live in today. That was the year cheap John Deeres appeared in box stores. I bought the little gear drive 100 @ Home Depot $1,499. Year after year, it never gave me any trouble. Marriage-yes. Mower-no.
By 2012, I had a new girlfriend. In the spirit of change, why not up-grade my lawnmower too? I thought a hydro might be more convenient (It wasn't) I thought a 2 cylinder might run quieter than a 1 cylinder (It didn't)
This time I went to a JD dealer. Said I was interested in a D130. Then asked what mine was worth as a trade-in? This little prick behind the counter said: *_Not much, we might give you $100_* Then an older man further back behind the counter spoke up: *_Is yours the little one with the gear drive?_* Yes! *_I'll give you $400 for it sight-unseen._* (What does that tell you coming from a JD employee?) I said, SOLD! And you having nothing to worry about. Took good care of it. The seat isn't even ripped.
Looking back, the cheap little 100 was a better mower than the D130 hydro.
I might just go buy that $1999 ugly gear drive Murray from Home Depot. 1-leg-it across my yard this year and do the trim work with chemicals.
i would go with a john deere still tho because the older john deere mowers easily beat the living time then a cub cedet

I like to look at these shaft drive Cub Cadets as MTD's high quality machine. They're not known for very high quality products, but many of their shaft drive tractors have proven to be very reliable, sophisticated, and durable machines. MTD's best. Cub Cadet in general is pretty good. We have a 2004 LT1018. Engine went to shit a couple years back but was replaced and now the mower just hit over 800 hours, and nothing really has gone wrong. Just basic wear and tear. That Kohler engine in the XT3 looks like a Kohler Command V-Twin, and they are also reliable. My Grandpa has one on his Craftsman tractor, and it lasted him years
Those top of the line Kohler are very good, but their entry Courage are garbage. MTD used to make very good stuff, but like everything else, it has a design life so you’ll buy another one😵💫
FF is said to be better than FR but I don’t know that for sure

I know Kohler gets a hard rap, but for me, they actually worked better than Briggs, & Kawasaki always gave me electrical issues....so it seems YMMV...
My biggest complaint with Cub is that they are a bit harder to work on...

I'm curious. How does it feel to buy Cub Cadet's biggest best garden tractor, they've produced for decades, only for Cub Cadet to discontinue not only your model, but the entire horizontal shaft GT3 series of tractors? The equivalent of buying a new John Deere X590 in 2023. Then John Deere announces in 2024 they will discontinue all vertical shaft lawn & garden tractors. Meaning all s100, s 200, x300 & x500 series models will no-longer be made. John Deere intends to replace those 20 vertical shaft tractors with an exciting line-up of unmanned robot drone mowers. Customer's still wanting a tractor style mower, can pick from our x700 line-up of horizontal shaft lawn tractors.
So ..... how does it feel? Do you feel lucky? Special? Stupid? Abandoned? Glad? Mad? Happy? Pissed off? Do tell.
Glad I got one because I like it, abandoned because Cub Cadet is now no better than Yard Man, angry because if I’d known, I’d have bought a Simplicity
I had to go to the dealership today and they told me that CC had an xt3 replacement in the works before B&D bought them out and he’s hoping they’ll still do so. They had exact one electric tractor and it was junk. It’s out in their junk pile after less than one awason
Thank You for this timely review for I am in the market for the same machines. My purpose for these will be for gardening only. I will not be purchasing any mower decks for having a zero turn. What is your opinion of Cub Cadet with tiller? I was raised with Farmall Cub, plow, disk, drag harrow and am thinking of purchasing the Cub with cultivators ( restored ) over the new models with tiller. Your thoughts since you have Cub also?
The older IH Cub Cadets were tanks. I’ve owned a couple (1650 & 1284). The tillers were mechanical (belt driven) kind of light, but they all were. They had a nice hydraulic tiller during the 1990s, but it’s been discontinued. I too own several Farmall Cubs and they’re great in the garden. IH made a yellow Loboy (184? 185?) some could be had with a hi/lo range and 3-point. There was a tiller available. IH also made a 1-point fast hitch tiller. As far as the new Cub Cadets, you’d have to get a sleeve hitch for a plow/disc/cultivator or by a separate tow-behind tiller with its own gas engine. DR makes one I believe. If it were me, I’d look for a Farmall Cub, or better yet, a 140. Good Luck and thank you for watching.
I also really like how the diff lock works on the cubs but wonder how many people leave it on all the time and try to turn with it. As I am sure you know you are not suppose to turn with it while engaged. I could see plenty of people not fully understanding when and when not to use it. Personally in todays times I feel Simplicity has the best looking and built garden tractor on the market today. Just hard to find dealers anymore around my area that sales them. I wish Deere would go back to a fiberglass hood or make a metal hood like the old cubs. The newer hoods do appear to be holding up better than the older plastic hoods. Our GT 235 has been an excellent machine but has issues with the hood cracking. It goes back in the barn after mowing and has never sat out since the day it was new.

@@LedgemereHeritageFarm Yes, our 235 has a 18hp Briggs and Stratton engine. The diff on the Deere are still pedal actuated. Not sure what carb it has. Never had to do anything to it and it's been used a lot. For years it was the only machine. I like the X530 but has a little more plastic like a plastic idler for the belt drive and plastic that wears where the pedals go through I have replaced once. It has a little over 400hrs.

Great review.Know if CC XT3 GSX is disc'td? My XT3 GSX 54" was stolen Jun16/22, my dealer was unable get one..So this May had to settle for a CC XT2 GX54D. I'm not happy w/ it. Uncomfortable seat, manual steering & heavy deck lift. XT2 on 'skinny' frame w/o the solid dual front to back track that XT3 had, that all accesories mount on easily. I checked JD models, they were all inferior,& cost ~50% more.XT3 accessories don't fit on XT3!! Miss my XT3!! Do have any news about its future??
as far as I know, its been discontinued. Looks like Stanley Black & decker wants to kill the CC name

my 2006 cub cadet has a 725 cc 23 hp v-twin motor and i do literally every thing a big tractor does just with smaller implements
the kohler courage singles are junk. who thought making a motor mostly out of plastic was a good idea

My JD has a 25 hp briggs. It's very clear that its a briggs engine: Briggs built it to JD spects.
I didn’t have any issues with the JD/Briggs other than you have to often order parts from the JD dealer. I had a GT235 that I loved, but a regular Briggs carburetor would t fit on it. Thank you for watching

I have had pretty good luck with mine. This JD is about 10 years old now and still going strong. I think JD is about the only one left now who builds a good garden tractor. Thank you for watching
For me I had a cub cadet and it broke in a year switches stopped working and wheels grinded. Then I got to work at a john deere dealership and ended up buying one and traded my cub cadet in. Believe it or not more parts from John deere dealerships come from American factories. Cub cadet mostly China. I'm definitely ok with spending more money for something I know will last.

Nope first the box says where the parts came from. Also you can trace serial numbers on a part to what factory it can out of.

I prefer the cub mainly because ite shaft driven and i do believe the command pro motor is going to be more durable than the ff. I do regret buying the cc x3 blower, i shouldve gone with a bercomac.
You might still be able to get a bercomac. My brother bought the x3 and it’s a bit of a chore to put on
@LedgemereHeritageFarm I would only do it of I can sell the x3 blower. Hard to sell as there aren't many xt3 tractors in my area.
Is there one that you prefer? Also the tranny in the cub is infact a step up from the deere having about 95 more ft lbs of torque than the k72!

Not sure yet. I really like the way the Cub Cadet mows, but I have only had it a month or so. It’s very easy to service and my local Cub dealership is hands down better than the John Deere dealership I purchased the x530 from. I really like the hydraulic power steering lift and the hydraulic tiller
I own the Cub and I had an older JD 325 mentioned in this post. For the money, this XT3 Cub is a beast and best overall value.

There is a difference between a one from John Deere and one from the big box store and so is the price$$$$ I wish International still made cub.
The dealership will sell you the cheap box store models too, but they don’t want to because they know they’re junk and the consumer will be disappointed. Up selling always gets them more $ in their pockets. The old IH, Simplicity, And Wheel Horse tractors were the best in my opinion
After looking at models from both brands, I concluded that the JD machines are just too overpriced. I bought a CC due to features, price, dealer attitude, and several other lesser factors.
Essentially the same with me. JD dealers near me aren’t super customer friendly. Cub Cadet and a Mahindra are

Strange you cannot turn your deck wheels sideways to remove your deck on your John Deere. On my X530 i can turn the wheels sideways and lock them in to slide it out from under the tractor. Mine has the bigger 54" deck though.
Mine is 54” too. Maybe an older version? My 325 with 54” had the ability to turn them. It was a lot simpler for sure. Thank you for watching

My 2015 Cub Cadet LTX 1050 is the worst lawn tractor I have ever owned! I’ve had 4 total. 1 Craftsman, 2 Farm and Country all 3 I believe were MTD, and 1 turd Cadet! The biggest issue was the MTDs had Briggs & Stratton engines, the Cub had a POS Kohler!
Yes, I think that Kohler Courage was probably one of the junkiest motors made. The KT15 was junk too and prone to catastrophic engine failures . Even the bottom-level Briggs were better. They were loud, but they weren’t usually exploding. Dad had a Craftsman with a Briggs and I think their biggest problems are their carburetors. It's a bit more than Kohler didn't like JD putting their name on the engines especially considering Kubota has been using Kohler's with Kubota labeling for years without Kohler having issues with it.
I have owned a John Deere lawn tractor and that machine was VERY easy to service , not as you described .
I’ve owned and worked on dozens of tractors, JD, Wheel Horse, Cub, Sears, MTD and many others and horizontal shaft motors are ALWAYS easier because you don’t have to remove the hood, disconnect the lights or fool with belts.
How did this guy convince his wife he needed the shaft?
I have never had any problem with the elc deck lift. You can hear the deck lift when it gets all the way up or down.

I have a 2013 gtx 2100 and it has a kohler with 350 hours and no problem.
Some people don’t like Kohler, but I’ve never had any issues
Cub cadet shaft drive is just marketing shtick. The shaft is like a lawn chair frame. Its not as heavy duty as they would lead you to believe.
it beats changing a drive belt any day, but traction-wise, they don't add much non. though I do find the horizontal shaft engines easier to work on.

I disagree. People have used garden tractors for at least 60 years to work their gardens. The John Deere tiller works really well and can get through small places.
KOLHER over Kawasaki any day, all day long.
I have had very good luck with every Kohler I have owned. I avoid the bottom low-grade models though
