The product seems unnecessary because if you want absolute clarity, you can simply install a camera in the kitchen. Cameras are inexpensive, compatible with any device, and even allow you to communicate directly with whoever is in the room. The idea of a kettle notifier feels outdated and disconnected from current technological advancements.

The kettle idea isn't the best one, but not for the reasons you gave. Installing a camera in someone's house is an even worse idea, because you might see some things you don't want to see. What if grandma decides to go to the kitchen naked? You still have those devices that you keep around your neck, that can call for help with a press of a button, for example. There are no technological advancements there; they've been around for who knows how long. But the kettle isn't the best idea, because of the reasons mentioned in the video: "What if grandma just doesn't want coffee that day, or doesn't feel like getting out of bed early that morning?" and "What if something happens to grandma after she had coffee, but the family thinks she's fine, because she used the kettle already?"

I don’t think many of you get it and he did a poor job explaining the benefits.
This is a non invasive way of providing peace of mind
I text/call my mum every day, so that I know her and my dad are OK, the irony is she worries about me because I live alone.
If I see she’s posted on Facebook in the morning then I know she’s ok, but a device like this that lets me know she’s made her coffee or turned on the TV or whatever it is, just gives that peace of mind without needing to ask and remind the person that you’re worried about them every day

The idea seems to have missed a trick - most elderly people have set routines in terms of daily habits - he picked on one (boling a kettle one up in the house) but what about others e,g, lights going off last thing at night, TV on/off monitoring, etc...

The idea wasn't a bad one tbh when you consider how bad Old people's care homes are. They are always closing down and old people have to care for themselves. Often you just want to make sure they're okay and can't always be there for them if they're hours away. The point isn't about emergency response - it's about if they're okay in the short and long term. It's alleviating that worry.

An Apple Watch detects unusual changes in your pulse/heartbeat and also detects collisions like a fall tonthe floor or a car accident and similar, perhaps that wasn't available when this was first pitched. But armbands with larm buttons have been available for decades, remote cameras aswell

I think the chap should have really fought back against Peter. The invention is not really competition for medical response systems where you need an ambulance. It's for people who just wanted that little bit of extra reassurance that a loved one is OK. I know plenty of people who have elderly or disabled family members that just need an alert, not an ambulance.
Having said that, since this was filmed, cameras and apps have probably filled this gap so I doubt it would have been a good investment in the long term.

But this is nothing new. Weak point depending on clouded services therefore if the internet is down then no messages. Also what happens if mum plugs a 3 point extension Adapter into to the kettle plug socket. There's going be a lot a messages saying she drinking tea non stop all day. :) The bottom line is he is using plug Adapters to do this, this is actually old technology plus it needs one for every socket you want to monitor. A more professional solution would be to connect "smart" devices (kettle, dishwasher, TV) to the clouded service, plus you will collect more useful data than just on/off from the kettle.
