SSince I was a child I was familiar with Sachs Hercules automatic and with 2 manual speed, Puch, and a lot of another stuff. My neighbor was and it's a great mecaniker he has a lot of Sachs Hercules. It's a simple concept motor, easy maintenance, and low cost. He always used a Sachs as he's preferate scooter.
I bought a brand new Peugeot 103 in 1975 at age 16. I now have several Puch and Tomos mopeds, along with a Solex 3800. I'd like to get my hands on another Peugeot or Motobecane. A gas tank can never be too big. I used to ride 300 miles a day on mopeds. Usually a one gallon tank, and 2 more gallons of premix carried in one gallon plastic oil jugs in saddlebags. Just buzzing along at 30 mph on the shoulders of state highways. I would come up behind some bicyclists once in a while. All my mopeds except the Solex easily go 30 mph. I have built mopeds that would do 55 mph, using 70 and 80cc kits, but the engines didn't tend to last that long.
if you know how to fix mopeds could you possibly let me know why my moped wont idle? it will stay running if i'm on the throttle but when i try to let it idle it just shuts off instantly.. I have a 1980 Sachs Balboa
You need to put a small sprocket wheel on the back and cut off the excess headerpipe inside the muff let and it will go 35 mile an hour. Sachs was flat out the best moped
The Wheel bearings are pretty sketchy on these things. My son has one and the rear bearing went out of it. I fixed the rear bearing my taking out the old one and installing a couple sealed bearings into the hub. It took some manufacturing but the bearing we have on there now is WAY better than factory.
Can you tell me what the difference is between this model and the Sachs Hercules M4? They look superficially the same to me. I'm about to buy a Hercules M4. Any information you could give me would be appreciated. Thanks
*I LOVE MOPEDS!* *But unfortunately they HATE having my 220b. adult ass on them!* *I bought a 'Mint' '08 Honda 'Metropolitan' exactly 6yrs. ago that had already had many performance upgrades done w/engine and exhaust still 'factory stock' and use only 10/40 full synthetic oil/high-speed Nippon plug/performance re-use air filter and it rides 'dead smooth/quite as a grave' at 40mph w/my fat-ass on it!* ( *This machine 'goes with the house' when I croak...I will never let it go* ) *I did get a 14" riser wind-screen for it at $77+ S&H...and worth every dime and looks factory stock too!*
@@joeschmo5988 it depends on how fast #1 #2 also depends on if it can seat 2 in most states if it is 20 MPH or less and one passenger only than you don't have to register or insure it "most States" not all. and depending also on power will dictate the age or if the rider has to have a driver's licence.
i know you posted this 5 years ago so i don't know if you will see my comments, but i just found a 1978 Hercules 25 MPH moped in almost perfect condition, only needing a adjustment to the spokes and tires, which the current owner is having done for me, he actually has 2 but the other he is rebuilding and if that works out ill be getting that one to for my wife :) i am tickled silly at having found one in such a pristine condition it starts with half a crank using your hand on the peddle. it looks and runs / sounds like a brand new bike. :D if you do see this post please contact me. you can look me up on facebook as RACO Coyle and anyone who has info on those models and all please feel free to contact me as well, :D thanks
I am still alive and well. But I no longer have this moped, and I'm sorry to say I really don't know much about Hercules Mopeds. But I can recommend www.mopedarmy.com as the greatest resource on the internet. The folks on that forum are the most knowledgable group of people when it comes to mopeds.
thats a real clean machine for sure.

Wanted one of those when I was 16. I'm 50, and got my first scooter ten years ago. It's fun! That thing looks like a blast!
I am a 40 yr old female from outside of Chicago. And I just bought a 78 balboa for $550 !!! It is CLEAN!!! SO EXCITED TO RIDE. TY FOR THE VIDEO
Have fun! They're a blast.
I had one of those brand new out of the box in '78. Delivered newspapers on it and road it everywhere, even a little offroading.
These are surprisingly capable offroad. Great low end torque and very good suspension.
Eine schöne Deutsche Hercules M4
Very nice machine! Great vid!
Thank you!
So Cool!

***** Try adjusting the idle screw, It's right on the side of the carburetor.. You cant miss it. You should need to tighten it.
How’s she running 9 years later? I just took mine out for a spin :)
Runs good. You should definitely get this registered and on the road. Good luck.
Xman6384 where's the vins on these. I'm I la trying to register, do I even have to register it...I'm using bike lanes right now
I'm in pa I'm not sure if it needs yo be registered
Decompression = Choke. I've only heard Yanks call the choke, a decompression lever. Lovely little moped, best of luck with her.
Nope. That's the choke. The decompression lever is integrated into the starter clutch handle on the other side.
Now this is cool!
Nice stuff, my bicycle has a sachs engine.
Nice my friend!!
I found a 1977 hurcules moped for $600 ... Is it worth that ?? I'm looking for a dependable back up transportation.
You need to put a small sprocket wheel on the back and cut off the excess headerpipe inside the muff let and it will go 35 mile an hour. Sachs was flat out the best moped
Would a larger or smaller sprocket be better for going uphill?

Abu Mannocchi no you don’t
