  • Welcome to my allotment diaries. Once again, join me as I massacre some weeds, navigate a wheelbarrow through a blackberry bush and try not to impale myself on a fork.
    You're welcome x

      Oh thanks. Glad to save you a bunch of money on therapy. Who needs experts when you have idiots dithering about on an allotment and attacking blackberry bushes to watch? ;)

    I agree with you 100% regarding the therapy that gardening gives. It helped me so much and still does. 30 mins of gardening cures me of a bad or sad mood any day! I wish everybody knew or would give it a try. Instead of building new houses, build allotment sites! 😀 xx

    I was dealing with some hard stuff a few summers ago and I just all of a sudden had the urge to start a few little garden patches on my yard. It was already the middle of summer, but I didn’t care. And it was SO therapeutic. I look forward to getting out in the garden every summer. Our winters are long and cold here in Canada, but summer is just around the corner. ☀️

      Oh lovely, I've just seen this comment. I was exactly the same. I lost my nan and I just kind of, went mad growing things. And it helped, so much. So glad you found gardening helped you too. It's the best form of therapy isnt it? Summer is on it's way! xx

    listening to the birds is the reason i used to get to my ploy at 5am in the summer.. frosty mornings is best for maintainance, ie repairs to beds or fencing etc or indoor work- shed tidying or greenhouse work.................................brian

      Oh wow, that is early, but I bet it's beautiful then. I go after the school run and it's always very quiet and peaceful, I love it. I will be getting my shed next week, so exciting times ahead :)

    Your doing a pretty good job there by clearing the plot over winter, not many people go near their plots over winter.
    Lots of help on here from us allotment owners 👍

    I feel the same when I go to my allotment- I’m watching your back catalogue because I can relate to you not like some other allotment videos I’ve watch - thankyou

    Great video. Jolly and upbeat and well, jolly and upbeat. With regard to the brambles; why not leave a few to grow? Blackberries require almost no maintenance, taste great and when the allotment committee come round and start moaning that the plot hasn't been cultivated you can point to your blackberry canes. And fruit bushes and trees. Most gardeners have a Calvinistic belief that if they aren't exhausted they aren't doing their job. But once again, home grown fruit tastes great, children love climbing and falling out of the trees and apart from a little pruning and the occasional handful of Growmore, apples, pears, plums, gooseberries etc are a sight easier to grow than spuds that can be bought for washers in Sainsbury's

    • @emmasallotmentdiaries
      @emmasallotmentdiaries  4 роки тому

      I'm sorry... allotment committee? What the heck is that? If anyone comes round and starts moaning I'll just compost them.
      Not sure about growing blackberries, I feel like I've developed a personal vendetta against them now and I fear they will know this and produce extra thorns or something. But love the idea of fruit trees, like apples and plums. Thanks for the advice! xx

    Keep up the hard work allotments are magical places. Just don’t push yourself too hard and let it overwhelm you.
    Have you seen the no dig method? I stupidly took on an allotment when I was 6 months pregnant so struggled to dig and clear. You basically cover everything in cardboard and compost then plant. I’ve found it much easier to maintain.

    • @emmasallotmentdiaries
      @emmasallotmentdiaries  4 роки тому

      I have heard of no dig and I am going to give it a go once the plot is under control. At the moment its full of blackberry bushes and no amount of cardboard is going to cover them up! And wow, 6 months pregnant!? You're super mum! xx

      I did the same when I got an allotment. Dug two beds then saw ‘no dig’ on UA-cam. Put the wooden edges straight on the grass. Layers of cardboard. 4 inches of compost/manure etc etc. Next spring, plant straight in. Two years later the beds I dug are weedier than the no dig ones.

    Hi Emma
    When I watched the beginning of your video I thought ' is she crazy digging when the ground is frozen'. By the end of your video, with the all 'shit' in my life, I had to stop and say, I fully get it and thank you. When I arrive at my allotment I am so stressed and overwhelmed, but by the time I leave I can coup with anything. Thank you for aptly saying how allot of us feel. Well done and you keep digging girl!

      @emmasallotmentdiaries  4 роки тому

      Absolutely! I feel exactly the same. It doesn't even matter how productive I am, I always leave feeling great and refreshed. It's just the best therapy and I'm so so glad I found it! That's why i'm making these videos, to share it with others and inspire people to try :) xx

    Just keep things simple, grow the foods you and your family will eat and plants and flowers that you can pick and display, did you get a shed for your birthday?
