It pains me to know how many of these architectural treasures were destroyed. The painstaking work of master craftsmen gone forever. Intricate metalwork, woodwork, marble, gilding, textiles - unthinkable to intentionally discard art.
I find it particularly painful to watch the loss of these beautiful houses. They are gone forever now.
I absolutely love the magnificent, detailed, ornate architecture of the Gothic style, for me it represents the pinnacle of design.
ISWYDT😂
I love Gothic too
There was a huge house similar to Eaton Hall near where I grew up called Rosehaugh but it was also demolished in 1959. The labor party in the UK put death duties after WWII up to over 90% forcing families who had just lost several members of their families to demolish their estates.
They’re unbelievably evil.
@@Abbale Unbelievably ill-advised. Virtue-signalling run amok.
Sometimes they would buy up coal mines from land rich bankrupt aristocracy and dig so deep it would threaten the country houses so they would be forced to sell
@@Abbale mistaken, not evil.
You could argue that the estates were got through govt privilege and connections, not relating to creating wealth.
But every story is different.
Socialism is the wrong ending to any story, tho.
@@hoodatdondar2664 communism and Liberalism erodes tradition. You’re probably brown.
Perfect timing. I've just started chopping up dinner.
i live in Ewell , Surry. We used to have Nonsuch Palace here, and Henry the Viii used to come hunting in the parklands. The Palace was demolished long ago, allegedly to pay gambling debts, but it did leave us with the wonderful 200 + acres of Nonsuch Park which is great for walking (with or without a dog) or jogging if you are more energetic than me.
I also grew up in Ewell. As a kid, I was sure that the Mansion House in Nonsuch Park was the Palace.
Depressing fact: from 1920 to 1960 nearly 1,500 country houses were destroyed and demolished. And many thousand more smaller historic properties.
Blame the tax man, death duties. Family farmers will suffer the same fate due to Reeve's new IHT.
The IHT was supposed to target the wealthy who invest in land using companies, but it hits the smaller family farmers who own the land and buildings in their own name and have been growing food for generations.
Maintenance costs, the greatest enemy of Gothic architecture
I used to live in Wanstead and loved walking around the park.
Wonderful video!
I would love to have a library like the one at Eaton Hall!
It's really sad to lost history like that but the cost are a real problem to be accounted.
Isn’t the UK spending millions on illegals? Idk maybe cut some cost there 🤷
@@IsaiahMiguelthe British spend double as much overall on native born than immigrants. Are you okay?
@@Mouritzeenimmigrants should get nothing.
@Mouritzeen You mean 2nd gen migrants
@@longiusaescius2537 nope. 2nd gen costs more. The reason why is because the country and taxpayers taking new migrants in didn’t pay for their education and other services.
One of the things i find fun about these noble guys is that many liked the wealth and status of being around the monarchy but few wanted to deal with the scrutiny of being royal
very great video..
there is a great channel detailing the history of many forgotten & demolished historic manors, castles ,mansions..,
from heraldry, folklore, ancestry and even tales of the servants...
@Little Knowledge Podcast...
0:51 Resembles the staircase in Hamilton Palace, Scotland. A portion of the staircase you see here resembles the staircase used in one of the homes in the movie Gone With the Wind, 1939.
I think Hamilton palace was also demolished
"No Voice from the Hall" by John Harris is a great read if anyone would like a little more on lost country houses.
Each new Earl adds a new wing or 'remodells', adding to the future upkeep. What I find particularly egregious is the tearing down of structures just to get the bare material. I gues there are worst things in this world.
Fascinating.
Absolutely destroyed by the atrocious amount of non stop ads. Well done uploader, this channel is one of the main reasons UA-cam has been destroyed. Won't be returning to this channel again. PURE GREED 🤬👎👎👎👎

Architecture, once the most noble art....where is the creativity, craftsmanship, drama today. We are surrounded by a desert of bland, souless boxes totaly devoid of character. Having seen one eggbox you have seen them all.
I've heard that just before the First World War about a third of the population were engaged in Country House work, very demanding for some, long hours in difficult circumstances but with "benefits" at times. (working on the land 'having a sgare of produce!?) Better than mill workers, for example, some of whom had to do ten hour days six days a week AND having to walk miles back and forth from home.
Let's rebuild it. Make England great again.
We can't, it's like NASA having to re-learn everything about rockets and space flight again because they'd been somnolent since Apollo 17. The master craftmanship and niche skills that went into building these houses doesn't exist on the scale needed in the modern world.
Najpierw musiał byś wyrzucić murzynów i arabów z Anglii
With what resources?
It still is great, even without the lost buildings( although it is sad to lose them0
We do know how to (space x catching rockets), and we do have the resources (they’re just spend badly), and lots of the old houses are still kept well… nevertheless something about England definitely needs rebuilding, just not quite sure what it is
An excellent and also interesting video. Of the three houses mentioned my favourite, from a purely architectural point of view, is Wanstead House; nothing can match the elegance and beautiful proportions of the Palladian style, an early form of neoclassicism. Externally, Cassiobury and Eaton Hall were awful creations as almost everything neogothic is bound to be. While neoclassical architects tastefully re-interpreted Greek and Roman architecture, Victorian architects who loved Gothic architecture usually designed ugly mansions in a style which were Gothic only in name. By far the finest British neo-gothic buildings were public buildings and churches.
Don’t worry Angela Rayner will revive English architecture.
😢
THE TRAGIC, UNSPEAKABLE, INCOMPREHENSIBLE , LOSSES OF THESE FEATS OF ARCHITECTURE, DESIGN,AND ENGINEERING,WAS UNFORGIVABLE! THE SHORT VISION OF DEATH TAXES WAS A DEATH NAIL PUNISHMENT BY IDIOTS IN GOVERNMENT. I THINK OF THE LABOR THATS WORK & EXPERIENCE WAS SQUANDERED, GOVERNMENT NEVER LEARNS FROM ITS MISTAKES!
alright don't have to shout bud we can all hear ya it's the YT comments section not a death grips concert
This is what happens when muggles are in charge.
Second!
How was these palaces built when electricity hadnt been invented yet. And we only had horse and wagons at the time? It makes absolutley no sense
my ancestors
Should have become museums and tourist attractions, even a hotel so ppl could enjoy the grandeur.
Tucker Carlson rants about how ugly modern architecture is..
It was the only way to avoid taxes and maintenence
O hi, im early, weird
Great time to eat some food
I have to say I do feel sad when I read about this lost great homes - but it was built on the back of British/Irish and colonial labour.
just like any project in the past, you think the pyramids were built by unionized workers with great pay and benefits, the great wall of china as mass graves of chinese peasants burried alive
That is such a generalisation, the reality is much less than that: an 1100s Medieval castle's great hall wasnt funded the same way a 1700s plantation owner's manor house was.
Not to mention that many manors were purely local affairs built for local landlords running regional farm estates, the number made by royalty and the colonial elite are relativey few in comparison.
So?
Your point?
Lmao this is so much cope
Problem is : the hierarchy and wealth was created by military avarice and exploitation
ie
millions of Africans, Indians, the North West etc...
nah
excellent film though to be honest an English AI accent might have been better for the subject matter
colonialists: By their fruits you shall know them!
which one of these houses existed due to colonialism?
I blame the Rothschilds.
Why, what did we do?
the video is as usuall for yoruself most interesting though if i may give you alittle bit of advice ,not regarding the video topic as im shrue your knowledge is in thsi regard signifantly greater than my own ,your voice sometimes sound a littel ahrsh as certian sharp sounds stand otu quite strongly which can eb pretty easily fixed by a little foamy thing caleld plol Safety in front of the microfoen that fitler out the sharp noises
