It pains me to know how many of these architectural treasures were destroyed. The painstaking work of master craftsmen gone forever. Intricate metalwork, woodwork, marble, gilding, textiles - unthinkable to intentionally discard art.

There was a huge house similar to Eaton Hall near where I grew up called Rosehaugh but it was also demolished in 1959. The labor party in the UK put death duties after WWII up to over 90% forcing families who had just lost several members of their families to demolish their estates.

i live in Ewell , Surry. We used to have Nonsuch Palace here, and Henry the Viii used to come hunting in the parklands. The Palace was demolished long ago, allegedly to pay gambling debts, but it did leave us with the wonderful 200 + acres of Nonsuch Park which is great for walking (with or without a dog) or jogging if you are more energetic than me.

Depressing fact: from 1920 to 1960 nearly 1,500 country houses were destroyed and demolished. And many thousand more smaller historic properties.

Blame the tax man, death duties. Family farmers will suffer the same fate due to Reeve's new IHT.
The IHT was supposed to target the wealthy who invest in land using companies, but it hits the smaller family farmers who own the land and buildings in their own name and have been growing food for generations.

I've heard that just before the First World War about a third of the population were engaged in Country House work, very demanding for some, long hours in difficult circumstances but with "benefits" at times. (working on the land 'having a sgare of produce!?) Better than mill workers, for example, some of whom had to do ten hour days six days a week AND having to walk miles back and forth from home.

We can't, it's like NASA having to re-learn everything about rockets and space flight again because they'd been somnolent since Apollo 17. The master craftmanship and niche skills that went into building these houses doesn't exist on the scale needed in the modern world.

An excellent and also interesting video. Of the three houses mentioned my favourite, from a purely architectural point of view, is Wanstead House; nothing can match the elegance and beautiful proportions of the Palladian style, an early form of neoclassicism. Externally, Cassiobury and Eaton Hall were awful creations as almost everything neogothic is bound to be. While neoclassical architects tastefully re-interpreted Greek and Roman architecture, Victorian architects who loved Gothic architecture usually designed ugly mansions in a style which were Gothic only in name. By far the finest British neo-gothic buildings were public buildings and churches.

That is such a generalisation, the reality is much less than that: an 1100s Medieval castle's great hall wasnt funded the same way a 1700s plantation owner's manor house was.
Not to mention that many manors were purely local affairs built for local landlords running regional farm estates, the number made by royalty and the colonial elite are relativey few in comparison.
