Great video. This is the first time i've seen a porch screened in without using the Screen Tight system. It's nice to know that there's another way to go about this project.
Thank you Kate, so glad it helped!
Thanks to you I now know how to screen in my front porch on my over 100 year old house without changing the look!!! Thanks so much !!! 😃
So glad the video was helpful!
I also have large openings on my porch. This really helps me me to know how to do mine. At 71 I still would still do it my self. Thanks so much for the information.
You're very welcome! I'm glad it helped. Good luck on your project!
Looks great Mike, what a huge improvement!
Hey thanks Mark! It's an awesome transformation of the space!
This is the first video of yours I've watched. I appreciate that you show when you make a mistake and don't just cover it up with editing.
Thank you for watching! Glad you enjoyed the video 😃
Exactly, let us see the lessons you learned.
Mix Master Woodshop Mike! ... THAT WAS AWESOME!!!!!! I was asked to build out a screened in patio and I was searching for ideas because I wasn't using no silly cookie cutter kits. The is fantastic!
I'm so glad this was helpful! Thanks for letting me know and good luck on your project!
Wow this is great, thanks Mike! I’m gonna redo my deck screens just like you did. I was totally stumped on how to fit a single screen in with the 2x4 handrail cutting across the gap in the middle. Use two screen frames, one above and one below the handrail, genius!
So glad it was helpful! Have fun! 😃
Nicely done dude. Thanks for posting this!
Sure thing! Thanks 👍👍
Good stuff! Thanks for the wisdom!
Thanks David!
Using Home Depot products and doing such a good narration with the process, is confidence building!
So glad it helped! Go crush your project man! 👍🏻👊🏻
Redoing my porch this was really helpful. 2.5" construction screw liked and subbed
So glad it helped! Thanks for subbing 👍🏻👍🏻
Hey Mike awesome video, Thanks!!!
Thank you Hal!
Great video guys! It looks fantastic Mike! I really liked the jigsaw/ bandsaw cut for the board to match the siding. I also didn't know Behr made deck stain stripper and wood cleaner! Thanks!
Hey thanks Casey! I really like the way scribing that 2x4 came out! The Behr stripper and cleaner don't have great reviews, but as you see they worked great for me!
@@WoodshopMike Very informative video. Thanks for sharing! Would I be able to cut the scribe board with a jig saw (which I have) or do I need a band saw (which I don’t have)? Also, was that scribed board a 2 x 4? And how did you attach the scribed board to the siding/house? Thanks! Much appreciated!
Thank you, great job!
Thank you very much!
Come through MIke!! Thank you!!
So great. Thanks 🙏🏼
Absolutely! I hope it helps 😃
Amazing! I love the technique you used to screen in the lower portion of the rails!
Thank you very much! 😃
@@WoodshopMike However the screen doesn't go down to the floor so it's open for bugs to come in.....
It's not under the deck correct. We don't have much issue with bugs in there even with the bottom of the deck not being screened
This has totally inspired me.
Good to hear it👍😃
Thanks for the construction screws advice.
Glad it was helpful👍😃
LOOKS GREAT!
Thank you Ali!
@@WoodshopMike You're very welcome
i have wanted to do this for so long to my front porch. Just found it too daunting. I may have to just try this now. THANKS!!!!
So glad to hear that and glad it helped! Good luck 👍🏻👍🏻
I joined the team. This is great!
I want my deck closed in no bugs yes but we can't do it our selves
Health reasons
Your blessed 👍thumbs up to you
"It looks really good". Yes it does! Excellent job Michael.
Thank you!
Wow. Wow. Wow. This turned out gorgeous. You do AMAZING work and what a GREAT video too! So informative and easy to follow! WELL DONE 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you so much! So glad the video was helpful 😃
@@WoodshopMike Happy Independence Day ❤️🤍💙
You too!
Can you make a suggestion on what to build in place of a screen once winter come? Plexiglass and how to make it to prevent snow from mounting on the porch
Great work. Prepping for my first handyman big. Do you have a video for the door build & install?
Thank you Brad! I have a video on building the door but not installing it. Hope you enjoy and good luck on your project! ua-cam.com/video/kCUBLrchKpc/v-deo.html
Very nice
Thank you!
Hey, Mike! I’m excited about doing this to our large back porch! I have a few questions, before we get started:
1. We live atop a large hill, and we get covered in pollen each spring and summer. Will the screening prevent pollen from covering everything on our porch?
2. How would we clean the screening, if it did stop the pollen?
3. How will this screening stand up to animals and small children? There are several feral cats who love to take up residence on our porch each winter. Will this keep them from getting in, or will they be able to eat/claw their way through it? Is there a stronger material that stands up to these wild little animals (kids included 😂)?
Thanks, from Jen in Rural Kentucky
Hi Jen!
1&2. Screening will not keep pollen out (ask me how I know lol!) and the best way to clean it we've found is to first use a blower to knock off the majority of the pollen and then follow up VERY lightly with a slightly damp magic eraser. Obviously cleaning from the outside is a bit more difficult. We honestly haven't cleaned the outside of the screen very because out porch is over 14' off the ground.
3. This screen will not stand up to cats or much impact as it's a lighter material (which allows it to not obstruct the view). They make bronze screening (amzn.to/2O6fxyU) which is very durable from what I've been told.
I hope that helps and good luck on your project!
This is great Mike. Looking to do something similar for my porch. Would you recommend pressure treated wood for the screen frames? Or would regular lumber do?
Thanks John! If you're painting the wood go with southern yellow pine, cedar, or red wood. If you're staining then pressure treated will be fine, but it'll have to season about a year before it's dry enough to accept stain. Good luck!
Thank you!! Just what I needed to know. I have a covered porch and plan on screening it in. My builder was charging a fortune to do this so, I decided to tackle it myself and save some money (have you seen the price of building lately?). I'm pretty handy and just needed some ideas on how to accomplish this. I have to do this from the porch side because the back of the house has a walkout and I'm not planning on getting on a ladder to reach the second story. And yes, that is the perfect stain color for your home, I love it!
Yes building is much more expensive these days! So glad the video was helpful and thanks for the complements😃
How did yours turn out..
@@tacobelle69 I'm still waiting for the builder to fix something on the covered porch so I haven't put it up yet. I should do it this week and I'll let you know. I'm not sure who will enjoy it more, me or my little cat :) The covered porch is open on only one side. The covered area will be about 9ft tall and 17 ft wide. I'm doing it by myself and I'm happy to provide the details.
Thanks for the video. What’s the name of the tool you used to outline the vinyl siding on the 2x4?
Hi, you're very welcome! I hope the video was helpful! Here's an affiliate link to the trend easyscribe: amzn.to/2ufv8RA
Let me know if you have any other questions. Have a great day!
Hey looks good nice job what is the name of that thing that you used to make the stub match the overlap vinyl siding ?
Thank you very much! It's a scribing tool. Here's a link to the one I used - amzn.to/2ZaarXZ
Thanks for this video! What kind of staples did you use?
You're welcome! I used T-50 1/2" staples.
Did you use pressure treated wood for framing the screen door? Great video. Thank you for sharing!
Nope, standard pine that was well primed and then given two coats of paint.
Good job Mike. Question, why did you make panels for the long wall but you attached the screen and trim directly to short wall?
Thanks Tom! I made the panels on the long side of the porch because that side is 14' off the ground. 👍🏻👍🏻
I'm living in a tiny house due to one of those wretched California wildfires, and we have a small porch we could probably screen in.
Does the screen help keep water out? The wind currently carries every raindrop all through our tiny patio- we'd like to be able to sit down and take our shoes off before entering as we are in the muddy middle of nowhere, but unless you want to sit on a wet chair and get your feet wet coming in, it really doesn't work. We have pretty hard winds, so I suspect some water would get through a screen but I'm hoping that surface tension of water might mean that more of it doesn't make it all the way through, or at least not as far into the patio. Its about 10x4, and if any of it could stay dry we'd be thrilled.
We can make some alterations, but they have to be fairly affordable and be aesthetically pleasing or the folks we are renting the property from won't be happy.
The screen does help some, but as you assume some rain will still come through. Not as much as without the screen though. It's fairly windy where we live at well.
Hope that helps! Good luck 👍🏻🤞🏻
Beautiful ! We want to screen an existing porch and wonder what brand/type screening to use… there are so many types, but we want durability and visibility too. We have beautiful views and would like to maintain a natural color. Can you recommend a good strong screening that isn’t too dark?
Thank you so much! All of the products I used are linked in the video's description!
Good video Mike, one questions about ripping the 2x6 to make 2x2, the actual size of the 2x6 is 1.5"x5.5" so is the final size after ripping is 1.5"x1.5"? or 1.5"x2"?
Thank you very much! Final dimension is 1.5" x1.5" 👍👍
Hey Buddy how did you secure the very bottom I seen a Gap when you put up that bottom screen?
There's a 2x6 that I notched to fit the space along the bottom👍
How did you screen in the little gap below your rail? Did you just add a board to act as trim?
Hi Will,
Yes, that's exactly what I did! 👍🏻
Hey Mike did you have to add another section of wood? On the bottom of your inside porch for the screen to be attached with no gaps? My house has a porch but there’s gaps in the bottom so I was curious?
Yep I did. I used a 2x6👍
What did you use as trim after you placed the screen?
I ripped some 2x into strips about 3/8 thick 👍🏻
Love the porch Mike! I'm looking to do something similar and was curious if you considered using The Home Depots ScreenTight system? And why you chose not to use it in the end...
Hi Justin,
Thanks, we absolutely love the space now! I looked into that system actually, but didn't use it simply because the back of our porch is about 20' off the ground and I didn't want to deal with scaffolding or tall ladders for the installation. If we had a ground level porch I would have used it without hesitation! Cheers!
@@WoodshopMike thanks for the reply! Also, I work part time for home depot in the paint department and love the results you got from using our behr stripper and wood cleaning products. The paint job came out great!
@@jdaigle107 Oh right on man! Yeah a lot of the online reviews have terrible things to say about the behr stripper, but as you see it worked really well. Crazy what happens when the directions are followed... Just sayin' LOL!
What did you do between the very bottom rail and the deck? Did you add screen for the mosquitos?
There's a 2x6 that I trimmed to for under the bottom rail and the deck. There's no screening under the deck boards, just on the "walls" and it's done well. There are bugs that still get in occasionally, but nothing like before it was screened in.
What did you use for the trim pieces that you covered the screen with around the door?
If I recall I just cut some strips off of a 2x4 or 2x6. You could use some 1x2 furring strips though if needed, they would just be a bit thicker that what I used. Hope that helps!
Hi, how is the untreated lumber holding up 5 years later? I’m trying to decide what material to use for my own frames and am worried about rot
It's doing great! No signs of rot, but I primed and painted every surface before assembly with exterior grade paint👍
I love it. would you suggest treating termites first or after? I know probably first but my dad was telling me that treating termites would be a waste of money 😮 I sure wish i had all the machines and tools you have.
Thank you! I couldn't really give a recommendation on treating for termites before or after this. The shop has been a very slow progression since I was in high school.
Did you do anything below the deck so that bugs wouldn't come up between the floor slats?
We thought about that but didn't because of the difficulty of then cleaning the screen below the deck. We thought of making some frames that would be screened, but opted not to and haven't seen a hug issue with bugs crawling up.
Hope that helps and thanks for watching!
Hey Mike. I have watched this video several times. It just hit me, how did you finish off the space between the bottom rail and the deck ?
And thank you
Any time!
I used a 2x6 to fill the space. Other than notching at both ends it fit perfectly!
What you put in the ceilings? Vinil siding?
It's vinyl, not siding though.
Did you screw in your door frame into the house siding?
Through the siding into a stud 👍🏻
How did you fill in the gap on the bottom rail?
I used a 2x6 and trimmed it to size 👍🏻
What was your time and cost? I have a similar porch area but on concrete instead of decking and I want to make it glassed in for a breakfast nook. I really liked the video.
Thank you very much, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I don't remember the cost since it's been a few years at this point, but time wise it only took an afternoon to make the frames, about a day to paint, and a few hours to wrap them with screen.
What is tour take o this mesh or the privacy one?
My apologies, I don't understand your question. Can you elaborate?
How long did this project take from start to end?
Project would have taken a few weekends without making video 👍🏼
So I wished you lived close I just bought a Log Cabin and I have '0' carpentry experience!
Sorry bout that! Hope you love the new cabin though!
How do you screen in the lower part of the railing
I scribed a 2x6 and just filled in the gap under the rail👍
I'm curious to know if you made the door, and if so, is there a video? I love this by the way
Thank you very much! I did make the door too. Here's the video👍🏻
ua-cam.com/video/kCUBLrchKpc/v-deo.html
@@WoodshopMike thank you!
Absolutely!
Where did you get the hardware, (lever handle)?
I got them from Home Depot! You can follow the link in the description to check it the materials 👍🏻👍🏻
What about the space at the bottom of the handrails?
I built similar frames with screen there too!
I really enjoyed the video but what is the use of having a screened in porch if the mosquitos or flies can come in at the bottom?
Thanks! You can screen the underside of the deck for sure, but then again there a small gap under the door too so it won't scrub on the deck. In all honesty I don't think you can block out insects 100%, but with the screening up we've never sat out there and have been bothered by bugs which was not the case at all when we first moved in 🤣
I watched as much as I could, but that music was hideous. It's a great project. Would have enjoyed watching the whole thing. You did a beautiful job.
Glad you enjoyed the project, we've really enjoyed the transformation!
Where did you get the door or did you make it yourself?
I built it! You can watch how here! ua-cam.com/video/kCUBLrchKpc/v-deo.html
How do you know we're to space the 2x4's
That's a great questions. Typically load bearing walls are 16" on center and non load bearing is 24" on center. Since this is a non load bearing wall, I ending up around 24" on center.
was the banisters already screened in ?
Nope, I did that at the same time.
Did you end up using a skirt board around the bottom of the railing? I have cats, and I'm wracking my brain on how to close that off.
Yes I added a 2x6 that was notched around the original pieces to close in the bottom.
Hi, where is your location, I need help with my newly built deck, I want to convert it just like yours can you help me pls?
where did you get the long screens i only can find 36in screens at lowes
I ordered mine through Home Depot. Should be a link in the description. 👍
@@WoodshopMike thank you buddy
Happy to help👊👊
I want to build my mom and dad a screen door for the front door and the back door what tools could I use by the way im 14
That would be very cool! BTW, so sorry for the delay in responding! You could do it all fairly easy on inexpensive tablesaw along with a kreg jig and drill. Best of luck!
@@WoodshopMike its fine I'm surprised there aren't replys from 8 months ago
Did I miss something? What abut that 3" gap between the railing frame and the deck? The mosquitoes will definitely find that opening.
Nope you didn't miss anything. I used a 2x6 between the deck and the rail to seal it up.
I wonder what it looked like from the outside?
IMO it looks great. The screens are aren't noticeable so the porch doesn't end up looking dark.
Thanks for the information, may our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ bless you
You're welcome! God bless you too!
Good detailed description throughout. However, most of us DIYers do not have the fancy tools used here. Need to duplicate this video with simpler tools.
Hi Sandy! I'm glad you enjoyed the video 👍🏻
We need more detailed explanations!
What are you needing more explanation on? Thanks for watching!
You really like ppg paint? Wait until you use Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore 😅
Um, the Home Depot did not sponsor this project.
Would hate to replace the screen
Wouldn't be that bad actually. That's why I made the frames removable👍🏻
