An additional tip for you: If you do not have a mock-up and want to know how much to subtract from the top of your waistband measure yourself where the top and the bottom of your waistband will be. Then subtract the top measurement from the bottom measurement, and divide this measurement by 3.

If the waistband is to big, I put in no-roll elasric that fits nicely inside the waistband. I go in at the side seams from the inside (so that it will not show on the outside). This work can be done on a sewing machine; however, I always do it by hand to make sure it does not show on the outside.

Great tip! I need to try this out. I can imagine this is a great option for both altering store brought trousers, as well as for confident beginners who might feel a curved waistband is a bit intimidating.

Maybe it means that where you are from. However, gaping means according to the Oxford Dictionary “(of a hole, wound, etc.) wide open”.
