I have been sewing off and on for years and recently I’ve really started sewing more and more. I just love watching all your tutorials, I have learned soooo much from you in regards to making my own patterns (and using them over and over again). You have really turned sewing into something very fun for me; instead of pushing myself to finish something, each night I can’t wait to get behind my sewing!! Thank you so much❣️
My legs are short but my torso is tall and I have to make my pants if I want them to fit correctly. You rock for making this video it will help so much.
I’m very grateful for this tutorial. I’ve got a pair of pants that I have worn religiously for years and years. They are starting to fall apart and I need to make some new ones. Wish me luck! PS Great tips for the use of wrapping paper and old sheets.
Love it! 18 hours later... 🤣Oops! Love it so much I did it last night. I think it’s worth mentioning the crotch should fall at the same distance from the waist/hem on both pieces. I know you marked the crotch on pattern (so I did too) but the matching on both pieces went over my head. After cutting out my test pieces the crotch pinned together perfectly but the back waistband was three inches higher than the front and the leg was three inches shorter 🤦♀️ I basted anyway and the fit is great so I’ll just adjust the height and length to match. I haven’t sewn clothes since the early nineties so I was quite tickled it fit while laughing at my absurd muslin. Ty again!
Thank you so very much for this video. I’ve only been sewing for 3 years and mostly focused on quilting. I have 5 yards of extra minky dots fabric from a quilt I’d made early on and Instead of buying another pair of pajama pants I used this video and your pajama pants video to complete my first drafted pattern and am currently wearing the pajama bottoms that were completed 20 minutes ago. They’re soooo cozy! Thank you again!!!
I was almost about to give up the inner part after watching sooo many videos, when I found yours, and MADE IT..!! I can't thank you enough, love you always it's so clear and helpful for complete beginners, thank you
Thanks Alisa; you make drafting look so easy and logical: I took class that made it look very difficult and put me off drafting but you have inspired me into trying it again,
Renee, I am so happy that you feel encouraged to try again! It really isn't that difficult, just a couple of moments to understand - and I will go deeper into those in the future videos, so hopefully it will help even more!
I was prepared to cut up a pair of pants to get the pattern 😂 I'm a beginner and have a pair of pants I absolutely love but the material isn't very good so I wanted to recreate it with a better material. Thank you so much for this tutorial😊
Again!!! You're just in time for what I was complaining about. I have NO khaki pants for this fall. I was going to the store this weekend because I have a 30% coupon. But I have gobs and gobs of fabric so I'm saving MONEY🤗. Thanks again you are super🤓
Catherin, I seem to be just in time every time, huh? :) it is so funny how it works out - but I am happy that it actually is just in time, so hope you can make something of that beautiful fabric you have!
Alisa- thanks so much for this tutorial. I have a pair of elastic waist pants, scrub pants actually, that fit me perfectly. Now with your help I have made a pattern. I am hoping to get rid of all my other pants that never fit me right in the first place! Plus, you are very clear, and pleasant to watch!
I always find pants are hard to sew and make a pattern with because of the crotch area. All the tutorials I’ve seen so far say that only one pattern piece is needed, but I know that’s not the case for tight fitting pants. Thanks for the tutorial!
Thank you for sharing! I tried to do this on my own, and I didn’t feel comfortable with my results - especially for the back pattern piece. Excited to try your method!
Alisa you are the best ! ❣️ thank you so much for this video • I’ve been battling for months to copy a pants • thank you for your time and making this video •‘ you are amazing ❣️
Awesome, open the infobox of this video there is more useful information and videos on how to draft simple pants, it will help you understand that better.
In your pattern drafting you curved up your back piece at the waist. Could I curve down the front piece at the waist instead? Would that achieve the same effect? I’m thinking about doing that just cause when I stretch the waist elastic and look at the pants from the front it seems that the back waistline is horizontal but the front curves down towards the center if you know what I mean. So I’m wondering if I should curve the back up or the front down instead. Thank you!
Thank you. I've seen all sorts of tutorials on drafting pants patterns & this is one of the best. I like how you explain why we do things a certain way and how to add the waistband to the top. I think my main problem is that I don't have any pants that fit me well. LOL. It's one of the reasons I want to make my own pants. But, I suppose I can put some on inside-out and pin them or something. I actually wear men's pants because they have deeper pockets than women's pants and they tend to fit more comfortably (men's pants are less likely to be super tight). Do you have a video where you sew these pants? That llama fabric is cute.
Hey...thanks do much for the tutorial. I have a question about plus size. I am tracing pants that is stretchable and it has stretched a little on the front so it's a little out of proportion...what do I do?
I learn so much from you. I've never sewed with knit fabric. I want to make yoga/trouser pants out of medium weight knit. What material would be best to practice on, before using material that I want to wear?
Obvi im late but ive realized that every fabric is so different but you can put the end of starws on your foot and it will be easier to sew the knit so you foot dosent go under the fabric while sewing
I'm trying to get more into sewing clothes and doing it proficiently and your vids are so cheerful and easy to follow! I love them but I only have one question! When you say... "sum up the back and front (9.5in and 9in) and it will be half of your waistband length" I get a bit confused!
Hello there and I am so happy you are enjoying my videos. About your question - think about it this way- the pattern that we made only makes one leg, so only half of the waist measurement. You will be cutting two of each pattern pieces mirrored, so that way you have a left and right leg, therefore to cut a full length waistband you will sum up one front and one back and multiply by 2.
hello, i have one pants that i love the shape but not much the material and colour. would it be easier if i seam rip everything and trace on the paper?
Yes, especially if it is a fiber that will shrink, like linen and cotton based fabrics. Otherwise you will sew a garment, wash it and it will be 2 sizes smaller. Follow washing directions found on the bolt of the fabric when you buy it.
Hi , very interesting tutorial what differences would you do , for formal trousers ? I'm wanting to do a Cosplay so I'm looking at tutorials for men's trousers initially but this video also helps. Do you also have any tips on how to copy a garment that has a dart in ? A jacket for example.
The pants I’m tracing have an elastic, & the pants I’m making will have an elastic. Do I need to pull the top of the pants like you did? Or can I trade it with the elastic without pulling it. Please answer
Thank you for this great tutorial, just what I was looking/waiting for, I certainly will give it try. One remark, if I may : for me the music is too loud :-/
Why is there no seam allowance added? Sorry, I’m new to sewing pants so I’m just really curious why there isn’t a seam allowance. Or do you add that once placing the pattern on the fabric?
You need to add seam allowances one way or another, as that is what makes the seam... I don't add mine on the pattern as I add it when I cut my fabric, just a personal preference, I explain in multiple videos why and how I go about it. Different people do it differently. But you do need seam allowance no matter which way you add it, otherwise your garment will be too small. Edited to say - in the video that follows after it you can see that I am cutting this pattern with seam allowance added.
I do, I just add them as I cut the fabric. The reason for it - every project might have a different seam allowance depending on a fabric and seam technique. A lot easier to add them as I cut the fabric then on a pattern
Thanks for the video. I will give it a try. The pants I'm copying have some stretch. My test fabric is not stretch. Should I add extra seam allowances to give them more ease? I really like you drafting videos.

@@ThoughtfulCreativity that's the problem. All of my pants are stretchy and the fabric I want to make my pants out of is non stretch. and if I take stretchy pants and use cotton to make a pattern they're not going to fit right because there won't be any give in them if you know what I mean.
I know what you mean, then instead of copying your pants you need to find a tutorial how to make pants pattern from scratch. I will be making one, but in about 2 months, therefore as of this moments - I am sorry, I can't help you much.
@@ThoughtfulCreativity Hello just checking to see if you're still going to be creating a pattern for making cotton pants that are non stretch with maybe an elastic type waistband. Kind of like the way you made your pajama pants I like the way those fit.

This is so helpful and so easy. I wanted to buy a pattern but with this method I can just create my own. Thank you so much.
I used to do that when I was young. I would turn the garment inside out as it made it easier to make a pattern from it more perfectly.
That's exactly what I said in the video, except in this case I have lined pants and it is impossible to do what usually do due to lining moving
Okay
Using wrapping paper is just genius! I have so much of it and a few rolls im sick of using so those would be perfect. Thank you so much

Pull on the fabric. Straight of grain doesn't give or stretch while when you pull. The fabric on the diagonal it stretches. I hope this helps💝🙏💝
