• Instruction sheets are a step-by-step written instruction on how I drafted this or that project, so that you can follow along. Instruction Sheets are available as a back catalogue, but there are no new Instruction sheets for projects starting with July 2022.
• The templates are ONLY for the small projects, like a basket, or coaster, or towel wrap and etc.
• I have also created sewing reference sheets and practice sheets, as well as sketches that you can use and some small-scale garment parts that you can use to practice "slash and spread" techniques and dart manipulations. Instruction sheets are focused on the drafting process and less on the sewing sequence as that is shown in the video. Sewing steps can be sometimes written out, and sometimes referenced back to the original video.

Thank You for Watching!
I used to do that when I was young. I would turn the garment inside out as it made it easier to make a pattern from it more perfectly.
That's exactly what I said in the video, except in this case I have lined pants and it is impossible to do what usually do due to lining moving
Using wrapping paper is just genius! I have so much of it and a few rolls im sick of using so those would be perfect. Thank you so much
I know right. Great for left over Christmas paper
@@matthiasflynn1518 did u post this comment on the wrong video?
You can get wrapping paper at the dollar store too. Of course if you spend time drafting a pattern it's probably better to use the thicker stuff to make it last. I like the wrap that has grid lines on the back side.
Omg I thought the same thing!!!
Exactly! Perfect!
My legs are short but my torso is tall and I have to make my pants if I want them to fit correctly. You rock for making this video it will help so much.
Love it!
18 hours later...
🤣Oops! Love it so much I did it last night. I think it’s worth mentioning the crotch should fall at the same distance from the waist/hem on both pieces. I know you marked the crotch on pattern (so I did too) but the matching on both pieces went over my head. After cutting out my test pieces the crotch pinned together perfectly but the back waistband was three inches higher than the front and the leg was three inches shorter 🤦♀️ I basted anyway and the fit is great so I’ll just adjust the height and length to match. I haven’t sewn clothes since the early nineties so I was quite tickled it fit while laughing at my absurd muslin. Ty again!
My came out the same way, l so appreciate the video and will keep trying!
I have been sewing off and on for years and recently I’ve really started sewing more and more. I just love watching all your tutorials, I have learned soooo much from you in regards to making my own patterns (and using them over and over again). You have really turned sewing into something very fun for me; instead of pushing myself to finish something, each night I can’t wait to get behind my sewing!! Thank you so much❣️
I’m very grateful for this tutorial. I’ve got a pair of pants that I have worn religiously for years and years. They are starting to fall apart and I need to make some new ones. Wish me luck!
PS Great tips for the use of wrapping paper and old sheets.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks Alisa; you make drafting look so easy and logical: I took class that made it look very difficult and put me off drafting but you have inspired me into trying it again,
Renee, I am so happy that you feel encouraged to try again! It really isn't that difficult, just a couple of moments to understand - and I will go deeper into those in the future videos, so hopefully it will help even more!
An old discarded garment....cut into pieces of front and back.... proves to be a perfect pattern ✌️
This is so helpful and so easy. I wanted to buy a pattern but with this method I can just create my own. Thank you so much.
I always find pants are hard to sew and make a pattern with because of the crotch area. All the tutorials I’ve seen so far say that only one pattern piece is needed, but I know that’s not the case for tight fitting pants. Thanks for the tutorial!
Again!!! You're just in time for what I was complaining about. I have NO khaki pants for this fall. I was going to the store this weekend because I have a 30% coupon. But I have gobs and gobs of fabric so I'm saving MONEY🤗. Thanks again you are super🤓
Catherin, I seem to be just in time every time, huh? :) it is so funny how it works out - but I am happy that it actually is just in time, so hope you can make something of that beautiful fabric you have!
I'm a completely new to sewing, thank you for explaining clearly how to copy trousers into a pattern
I have to try this i am 5 10 and i want velour pants for the winter thank you!!!!!!
thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!! I've struggled so much with creating the perfect pattern, but finally it worked out. I can now start selling what i make - this video is explaining everything in the best way possible i love you
I was almost about to give up the inner part after watching sooo many videos, when I found yours, and MADE IT..!! I can't thank you enough, love you always it's so clear and helpful for complete beginners, thank you
In your pattern drafting you curved up your back piece at the waist. Could I curve down the front piece at the waist instead? Would that achieve the same effect? I’m thinking about doing that just cause when I stretch the waist elastic and look at the pants from the front it seems that the back waistline is horizontal but the front curves down towards the center if you know what I mean. So I’m wondering if I should curve the back up or the front down instead. Thank you!
So helpful .... I’ve got some fabric and a pair of trousers ready and it’s now my plan for tomorrow!
Love your tutorials thank you so very much for sharing your experiences and helping so much with my motivation you truly are a star!
Alisa you are the best ! ❣️ thank you so much for this video • I’ve been battling for months to copy a pants • thank you for your time and making this video •‘ you are amazing ❣️
Hey...thanks do much for the tutorial. I have a question about plus size. I am tracing pants that is stretchable and it has stretched a little on the front so it's a little out of proportion...what do I do?
Tks for sharing i really appreciates your tutorials
Absolutely - my pleasure!
Thank you so much dear Alisa. This was so much needed.
Very useful!!! But the music is just too much! You are lively enough and entertaining! You do not need these percussion in the background.
How do I work out the straight of grain direction accurately so that the pants hang well.
Pull on the fabric. Straight of grain doesn't give or stretch while when you pull. The fabric on the diagonal it stretches. I hope this helps💝🙏💝
Alisa- thanks so much for this tutorial. I have a pair of elastic waist pants, scrub pants actually, that fit me perfectly. Now with your help I have made a pattern. I am hoping to get rid of all my other pants that never fit me right in the first place! Plus, you are very clear, and pleasant to watch!
I'm heavily interested in this as well. Scrubs
I was prepared to cut up a pair of pants to get the pattern 😂 I'm a beginner and have a pair of pants I absolutely love but the material isn't very good so I wanted to recreate it with a better material. Thank you so much for this tutorial😊
Deconstruct an old pair with a seam ripper for easier tracing.
Oh this is much easier than what I used to do- unpicking all the seams and then copying the pattern and then resewing everything😅😔 thanks!!!
This was so clear and detailed. Thank you so much for your work!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so very much for this video. I’ve only been sewing for 3 years and mostly focused on quilting. I have 5 yards of extra minky dots fabric from a quilt I’d made early on and Instead of buying another pair of pajama pants I used this video and your pajama pants video to complete my first drafted pattern and am currently wearing the pajama bottoms that were completed 20 minutes ago. They’re soooo cozy! Thank you again!!!
woooohooooo! Great job and congrats!
Love your tutorials on making patterns from clothing we wear!
Such a genius idea to use wrapping paper!!!! Thank you!
R very detail , very satisfied
This was very helpful! I just watched this, so I could watch the sewing of the pants now😊
Great tutorial but the music is a little too loud. Otherwise awesome.
Thank you. I've seen all sorts of tutorials on drafting pants patterns & this is one of the best. I like how you explain why we do things a certain way and how to add the waistband to the top. I think my main problem is that I don't have any pants that fit me well. LOL. It's one of the reasons I want to make my own pants. But, I suppose I can put some on inside-out and pin them or something. I actually wear men's pants because they have deeper pockets than women's pants and they tend to fit more comfortably (men's pants are less likely to be super tight).
Do you have a video where you sew these pants?
That llama fabric is cute.
Off topic, I love your voice☺️❤️
Thank you for this great tutorial, just what I was looking/waiting for, I certainly will give it try. One remark, if I may : for me the music is too loud :-/
Agree. I wear hearing aids and it can be difficult to understand words when there is background music
This is just what I need. Thanks
You are so sweet! In order to make the waist part higher we have to make that change but is it right to make it above the crotch or the other way, at the straight line of pants? I hope that makes sense.. 😍
Thanks for this pattern. I have just watched your video on how to make pj’s using this pattern 😍.
Very clear and understandable instructions, thank you!
That good idea I will to make my own paint
Really good video but I wish there wasn't music in the background as I found it quite off putting. I hope you won't take offence at that comment, because otherwise the video is really good 😊
Thank you. I can't wait to copy this for my favorite work shorts from some fabric I bought at an op shop :+)
Awesome!
Just wodering. why does all these sewing videos start with 'take a pair of pants that fits you..'
I want to sew my own pants, because i have no matching ones!
After more than 20 stores, I think sewing is easier and more stressfree than shopping 😅
I think you need to look up "how to draft a pair of pants from scratch". This video clearly states "turn your pants into a pattern". You can always take a pair of pants that fits more or less, copy them and then work out the adjustments.
@@ThoughtfulCreativity oh wow, thanks! I have'nt looked these up 🙈
this is so cool! i cant believe i didnt find you sooner. really looking forward to making my own clothes with your help. thanks TC :)
Awesome! There are so many tutorials on my channel - you will find plenty of ideas, inspiration and instructions. Thank you!
This is everything. Awesome tutorial
This is really helpful thanks for sharing ❣️ amazing tutorial
This video is so helpful. I’ve always struggled with pant patterns. I’m going to try it out right now!
Awesome, open the infobox of this video there is more useful information and videos on how to draft simple pants, it will help you understand that better.
I like your video with just your voice - it is so relaxing.
Thank you for sharing! I tried to do this on my own, and I didn’t feel comfortable with my results - especially for the back pattern piece. Excited to try your method!
Great tutorial. One thing I don't understand why anyone would find higher trousers more comfortable. I don't like the fashion at the moment because you can pull trousers right up to underneath your armpits (I know that'd not true, but there are literally no trousers with proper hip fit) and if you don't have the figure for it, that's the most uncomfortable and stupid lookig cut you could imagine people.
BTW in Europe wrapping paper does not have lines on the back.
Help some, we did our first DIY pants/leggings 1/6 scale
I learn so much from you. I've never sewed with knit fabric. I want to make yoga/trouser pants out of medium weight knit. What material would be best to practice on, before using material that I want to wear?
Obvi im late but ive realized that every fabric is so different but you can put the end of starws on your foot and it will be easier to sew the knit so you foot dosent go under the fabric while sewing
Hello im new subscriber... Im just learning from home and had no idea about sewing but i wanted to learn how to do it😁😁 i just wanna ask if what do u call that pattern behind that yellow box box i guess???🤔🤔😂. Do i need to make that or can i buy that thing in stores?? Thank u hope you would notice my comment😍😍😍
Hi , very interesting tutorial what differences would you do , for formal trousers ? I'm wanting to do a Cosplay so I'm looking at tutorials for men's trousers initially but this video also helps.
Do you also have any tips on how to copy a garment that has a dart in ? A jacket for example.
Soy de Argentina!!
No entiendo el inglés 😏
Hay tutoriales en español tambien.
@@Lady-bug ....👍👍😚.....disculpa !!!
Donde tendría que ir para ver los tutoriales en español ???
I'd like to make a protective waterproof butt cover for outdoor activities. How to make the back part seamless? The front part is just strapped with belt.
Great video! What's the minimum amount of fabric would you say this took? Rough estimate for a loose fit!
How do you make the waist large enough. I followed but the waist won't go past my thighs before I add the elastic
I use examining room paper. It works great for tracing patterns and it’s cheap from Amazon.
hello, i have one pants that i love the shape but not much the material and colour. would it be easier if i seam rip everything and trace on the paper?
Yes :)
Thank you for sharing! Now I won't have to buy a pattern, they are so expensive ❤
Interesting accent you have, where you from?
I wanted to see your finishing product and I saw your video of the the pyjama pants with pockets lol
An old discarded garment....cut into pieces of front and back.... proves to be a perfect pattern ✌️
What I always have trouble with is what farbic can you use to make pants.
Almost any, really. The real question is for the pattern/drafting and shape. You can make flowy palazzo pants from light silk but the pattern would look greatly different from formal wear pants. I most frequently use twill, denim, medium weight jerseys, suiting.
Thank u so much it was clear I just dont understand waits band on v shape if you plz explain a bit thank u once again I really liked it
I did just about the same thing I just didn't label it..!! Thanks so much..!!
I wanna turn a really large pair of pants I bought from goodwill into a pair that matches the fit of a pair I already own
This won’t be easy yall
Can you do a video on making a pattern for a mans patagonia micro hoodie insulated jacket. I can pay you
The pants I’m tracing have an elastic, & the pants I’m making will have an elastic. Do I need to pull the top of the pants like you did? Or can I trade it with the elastic without pulling it. Please answer
Can you help me,I wanna know what the material pant surfing cotton or silk?
I'm trying to get more into sewing clothes and doing it proficiently and your vids are so cheerful and easy to follow! I love them but I only have one question!
When you say... "sum up the back and front (9.5in and 9in) and it will be half of your waistband length" I get a bit confused!
Hello there and I am so happy you are enjoying my videos. About your question - think about it this way- the pattern that we made only makes one leg, so only half of the waist measurement. You will be cutting two of each pattern pieces mirrored, so that way you have a left and right leg, therefore to cut a full length waistband you will sum up one front and one back and multiply by 2.
Very useful tips, and timely video, i wa just now in need to copy my favorite wide leg pants
Thank you, this is really useful!
Thank you so much for the lovely tutorial.I have a pair of pants that I would like to draft a pattern out of.
You are my most favorite teacher ever. You are so talented! Thank for sharing your 😊knowledge.
your music is too annoying. its overpowering your voice.
This is a 4 year old video, I was just getting started with youtube. I have far more detailed pants copying tutorial, without the music - ua-cam.com/video/UWjKqms7sG4/v-deo.html
I love how you every detail ,thank you
Curious if there is a significant reason for drawing dashes instead of a continuous line on the pattern paper other than saving time?
my pants only have one seam on the inside, so do I just have to cut the fabric out on then fold
I just found your channel! Wow tysm. ❤
super super helpful tutorial! and you're so pretty!!
Where do you purchase your fabric? Looking for a great online fabric store.Love your videos. ❤
You are as cute as a button. Thank you for this video.
Hi Alisa!! Wonderful vlog.. Excellent timing on how to make pants....
💜💜💜🧵🧵🧵
I love your voice lol
I have a pair of pants I don't wear anymore because the print on it is dated. So I took it apart to use as my pattern. My problem is which side do I lay down the pieces on the new fabric? 🤔 Do you have a tutorial for this. I'm planning on using a solid color.
Open the description of this video - you will find a link to a video :)
Gonna give it a try, will get back to you. It seems vary eary easy. 👍👍👍👍👍
Why is there no seam allowance added? Sorry, I’m new to sewing pants so I’m just really curious why there isn’t a seam allowance. Or do you add that once placing the pattern on the fabric?
You need to add seam allowances one way or another, as that is what makes the seam... I don't add mine on the pattern as I add it when I cut my fabric, just a personal preference, I explain in multiple videos why and how I go about it. Different people do it differently. But you do need seam allowance no matter which way you add it, otherwise your garment will be too small. Edited to say - in the video that follows after it you can see that I am cutting this pattern with seam allowance added.
Is there a reason why we need the paper to begin with? Why not just pin the sewed pants we’re using as a pattern directly onto the fabric and cut? Also, I never understood why we need a separate front and back piece for each leg, why can’t we cut one fabric piece for each leg (considering the gap for the croch on each side of the cut) then simply bring the two ends together and sew for each leg then sew the two final pieces together?
The paper is used so that you can use this same pattern for multiple projects. You can pin and cut it directly to the fabric if you only need to do this once.
hi, why don't you use seam allowances?
I do, I just add them as I cut the fabric. The reason for it - every project might have a different seam allowance depending on a fabric and seam technique. A lot easier to add them as I cut the fabric then on a pattern
@@ThoughtfulCreativity awesome thanks so much :)
Hello Elisa, I hav been watchng ur video for several months now. I'm a native American Indian(Dine') frm Arizona. I hav learned so much frm u. Thk u
This was a super helpful video thank you!
Helpful to use pants without lining for pattern.
How come you did NOT copy the back yoke as a separate piece? Why wasn't that important ? I really want to understand as I know the yoke is for better fit.
I did not want to and it came out great. You can copy it if you want. There are situations when yoke is not necessary.
Thank you 🙏🏼 it’s very nice to explain properly.
You should've added how you cut the fabric pieces, great video anyways!
Open the infobox - the video on how to cut and sew is right there.
got kind of lost with the second leg and waistband. Wish it had been a slower video. But thanks for your videos!
There a setting on UA-cam, on each video you play, you can slow down the play back speed. That's helped me tremendously with crafting since discovering this and I hope it helps you too!
Love your positive attitude 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉😊
