In this video I'm showing you how I built an outdoor sofa from start to finish. It's suitable for outdoors as it's built from weather resistant western red cedar and easily outfitted with store bought cushions. Check out some similar chairs my friend's built below.

Love the way your mind works!!!!! I almost always forget to use scraps as marking, and position holders.
Shimmy test!My favorite!
I like how you have mountain peaks and the sun on your wall thats a great ideal it makes you smile
pretty cool when one of my fav youtube creators mentions another one of my favs...DIY creators, awesome
I really am so envious of you in America, with the price and variety of timber available to you.
Western red cedar of that size, quality and quantity is just not available. And even if available impossibly expensive.

I like the shop assistants that you have for testing the comfort of the cushions!

Been watching you now for about a week you are very gifted, thatnks for the tips that you give, I've been wood working for a year now and find your channel a great source for learning
Awesome! Glad you are enjoying my channel. Thanks for watching.
Ciao April. Guardo sempre i tuoi video e devo dire che sei sempre più brava. E non mi stanco mai di guardarti nei tuoi progetti.
Rounded edges are friendly edges. A detail I would incorporate in a few places into an otherwise awesome project. Thanks April!

Great video April,
Thanks from London England 👍😎🏴
Wow the arm angles was pretty neat and I wouldn't have thought of that.
Love the smell of cedar....nice project!
Beautiful April! Love how you know your stuff and have lots of girl power! Hugs from June ❤️👵🏻
Thank you so much!
beautiful work
Wonderful! I think I'll change it up a bit by modifying the "legs" using some of the ideas from your "build a rocking chair" video! Thanks so very much for the fantastic contributions you have made to our craft! - Wood probie
Hello:
I have been watching your videos for the last year. I downloaded the sofa drawings to make it in the future.
One recomendations for the sofa's drawings. The drawings shall have more measurements for each piece of wood for the sofa. It will be good more detailed drawings with more measurements so you can adjust it more easily to your needs. This could be added at the end as an expanded drawing.
Keep doing your videos.
Thanks!
Hello from France Mrs Wilkerson.
As usual another good moment watching your video.
Thumb up
Take care and stay safe
Thank you. And Hello from Texas!

Funny just started working on my patio/kitchen layout and all your videos showed up on my UA-cam shows. Love your vids keep the comi ng.
That is awesome! I'm glad you enjoy my channel. Thanks for watching.
Really Nice! I made a similar “shape” chair in 1971. I used 2x6’s, a handsaw and nails. I was 13 and already 6’. Thought I would grow to 6’ 4” like my uncle so built the chair BIG. Bad move. The chair went into the basement on the family farm and it’s now my brother’s basement. With the renovations done since, the only way that chair is coming out of there now is with a reciprocating saw. (Which I guess I should do. For my sister-in-law.)

Love your work however I'm curious why you didn't sink the screws where they could touch your flesh, especially if the couch is in sunlight, those screws would get HOT..
Always Incredible Watching you Create April. Very Pleasant,Calming, Informative & Educational Plus you are Easy on the Eyes. Thank you for Always Sharing your Fine Works & Wonderful Projects.
Great jobs
Thanks for another great video. This is a cool looking sofa.
Glad you like it!
Awesome work! Love it been putting off rebuilding my patio furniture lol. As for "keeps" I must be the only guy I know that's been trying to find a way to lose my fur lol

April did I miss something? It appeared to me that the slats on the right side were not secured down. I can see the ends move when you do your tests.
I saw that also
@@daveklein2826 LOL, you can clearly see the slats moving at the 8 minute mark
I saw that too!
Saw it also at 9:55 when brushing on the sealer. This is not to bitch about something but to give some help.
they're secured down in the two middle beams, and not the side ones. Saves screws, I suppose. They passed the tests, so they're clearly not necessary.
Great job looks nice. I like that design. Thanks 😊🙏

I like the arm details. But how about rounding off some of the contact edges, such as the front of the seat bed.

Would be nice to hide the screws, especially the ones very visible on the top arms
I would do that on mine. I would also add a support to brace the arm. Those 2 screws might need some help if weight was put on the outside edge of the arm.
I believe you got the adjectives male and female reversed as they apply to your cord reel.
Who really knows what’s male or female these days?
@@dennisdickson6210 Household electrical connectors don’t seem to have developed much gender fluidity.
Came to make the same comment
@@daveklein2826 Mr. Correcto you are.
I think you've done pretty awesome with hardware April but that it's holding you back now that you've advanced so far. Don't get too comfortable with it. As a challenge to yourself you should try to build a copy of this lovely sofa using nothing but joinery - no screws or nails, just wood and glue. I'm sure you can do it. Yeah, it 's more planning and more difficult to construct but that's what challenging yourself is all about. In any case ... nice job - it looks lovely :)
I agree in a lot of ways, but even exterior wood glue doesn't hold up very well in outdoor applications. Moisture significantly weakens the bonds, and the more drastic wood movement causes them to fail too. I use dovetails, mortise and tenons, dowel joints, etc for my interior furniture, but it just doesn't make sense in a lot of cases for outdoor furniture. You could use pegged tenons and tusked tenons to accommodate for that, but it's not really worth the effort in my opinion since it's just going outside and nobody is going to pay much attention to it. I guess she probably builds with a lot of fasteners because of her filming schedule too though.
Thanks for this video! I’m really interested in the finish. How many coats of the Gleam did you use? Is it still holding up well a year later?
Not wanna be that guy. But extended cords are ment for a full extend when being used. I've seen a bunch of them set on fire because they were not fully extended and they got so warm they started burning.
Would it sit flatter on the floor if you put four corner pads on the end pieces. That way the entire edge of the ends dont sit on the floor and minimize the moisture exposure.
Nice work but I think you're gonna regret those sharp pointy edges...
nice!!
Using the drill to drive the screws and the impact driver to drill the holes. Is that the "think outside the box" type stuff I always hear about?
April. Any rubber Under the legs??
Did you run out of screws on the left end (as seated) or just forget?
Great
Excelente banca para descansar, por cierto, que marca son tus botas¿
Nice
Hi April be careful using your electrical leads rolled up when using powerful equipment. The coil can build up head similar to a copper element and melt the insulation. this is the voice of experience after welding my 240v 30m reel together using belt sander.

Actually - angling nails in any project where you are using a nailer or stapler will make is stronger because the nail/staple will less likely pull out than if it wan nailed at a 90 degree to the wood. angling and faster at a slight angle will always give you a more secure and stronger joint, Just some thing to think about...
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
Claw clip hairstyle 💇♂️ tutorial when as shown on 9:41?
Apríl. Trošku stolárčiny do toho. Nejaký konštrukčny spoj nielen klince a šrubky.
How do you it keep it all going. Amazing.
Beautiful, where do you find that ceder
I live in the Texas Hill Country and we are surrounded by cedar. But the big box stores sell it also. Thanks for watching.
Hi April, your projects have inspired many of my own! Thanks for the amazing tutorials and plans you've provided. One quick question: where do you get your lumber? I'm in the Texas hill country area and saw that you're around here as well. Would love to know where I can shop for good quality supply instead of Home Depot/Lowes. Thanks!
WhatsApp➕➊➋➊➌➏➐➍➒➎0➏
Are the 1x4 cedar boards actually 1" thick? If I buy them at the local box store they will be 3/4". Does that make a difference. I bought the plans from your website. I don't see where it specifies.
Great video! Like how you shot brad nails on an angle since they were long. Stronger too when angled. A carpenter friend told me to always buy long brad nails and just used tin snips to cut the tips to the desired length! Haven’t personally tried it yet, but sounds like a solution?
Very nice. If you were mine.
Hi April , greetings from Sunny Cape Town South Africa. Are the plans available in Metric?
No, at this time they aren't. But thank you for watching.
Thank you April , we only use Metric. I am very keen try this plan. Will be my 1st purchase and i will convert it to Metric . Is there any chance of getting a coupon for this or a discount ?

I'm confused. Even on the finished project, there were no fasteners holding the right side of the seat down. You see it when April shimmies and lays down on it, but also again at the end of the video. Why was that choice made?
I was wondering that too
I noticed that as well.
Also on the left end of the back rest slats
@@daveklein2826 from 7:45 - 8:05 you can see no screws in the right side of the seat slats or the left side of the back slats, and watch the right side ends of the seat slats lift and flex. Especially during the stomp test. And again at 9:55 you can see no screws in the right side of the finished slats as well.
@@philipvanvaerenbergh5062 @Dave Klein perceives himself as April's white knight apparently. He's all over comments pointing out her mistakes even if the commenter is obviously correct.
Sounded like you said total opposite for power cord end pieces.. male should have prongs and females should have inlets or holes..
Hi April I’m from the uk and was just wondering what wood I could make it out of instead of cedar
Would like to make this to put on our porch but not sure it would fit currently. Do you have the dimensions available?
Immune to water damage as well as rot?
