    In this video I'm showing you how I built an outdoor sofa from start to finish. It's suitable for outdoors as it's built from weather resistant western red cedar and easily outfitted with store bought cushions. Check out some similar chairs my friend's built below.

    I really am so envious of you in America, with the price and variety of timber available to you.
    Western red cedar of that size, quality and quantity is just not available. And even if available impossibly expensive.

    Hello:
    I have been watching your videos for the last year. I downloaded the sofa drawings to make it in the future.
    One recomendations for the sofa's drawings. The drawings shall have more measurements for each piece of wood for the sofa. It will be good more detailed drawings with more measurements so you can adjust it more easily to your needs. This could be added at the end as an expanded drawing.
    Keep doing your videos.
    Thanks!

    Really Nice! I made a similar “shape” chair in 1971. I used 2x6’s, a handsaw and nails. I was 13 and already 6’. Thought I would grow to 6’ 4” like my uncle so built the chair BIG. Bad move. The chair went into the basement on the family farm and it’s now my brother’s basement. With the renovations done since, the only way that chair is coming out of there now is with a reciprocating saw. (Which I guess I should do. For my sister-in-law.)

    I think you've done pretty awesome with hardware April but that it's holding you back now that you've advanced so far. Don't get too comfortable with it. As a challenge to yourself you should try to build a copy of this lovely sofa using nothing but joinery - no screws or nails, just wood and glue. I'm sure you can do it. Yeah, it 's more planning and more difficult to construct but that's what challenging yourself is all about. In any case ... nice job - it looks lovely :)

    • @onebackzach
      @onebackzach 2 роки тому

      I agree in a lot of ways, but even exterior wood glue doesn't hold up very well in outdoor applications. Moisture significantly weakens the bonds, and the more drastic wood movement causes them to fail too. I use dovetails, mortise and tenons, dowel joints, etc for my interior furniture, but it just doesn't make sense in a lot of cases for outdoor furniture. You could use pegged tenons and tusked tenons to accommodate for that, but it's not really worth the effort in my opinion since it's just going outside and nobody is going to pay much attention to it. I guess she probably builds with a lot of fasteners because of her filming schedule too though.

    Actually - angling nails in any project where you are using a nailer or stapler will make is stronger because the nail/staple will less likely pull out than if it wan nailed at a 90 degree to the wood. angling and faster at a slight angle will always give you a more secure and stronger joint, Just some thing to think about...
