I love the gold accents on these paintings!
That's one of my favorite backgrounds ever with the pink flower! Just gourgous!
Hot pressed is so tricky with watercolor, isn’t it?? It just seems to fade in a weird way and I feel like I need to add more layers. I think it’s definitely good for colored pencil. These are lovely gifts and happy mail really is the best!! I love the little froggie in the first painting🐸
Hot press is at least a thousand times harder to use than cold press, haha! I definitely want to try out my coloured pencils on it; it's so smooth and lovely! Thank you, I had to paint that pic when I saw the cute frog!
What an awesome gift. Love what you created, frogs are the best!! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you 🐸
How fun to try the cold-press and hot-press paper side-by-side. Loved hearing your thoughts on the differences. Generous and fun gift!
They behave so differently to each other - Hot Press is so much more challenging to use. 😂 It was such a generous gift. ❤️
I love seeing you in the comments, Miranda. 🙂
@@attorneycarissa thanks, Carissa!
Lovely paintings! The light box really is bright 🌞 wow!
Haha yes they emit a pretty intense white light, and this can also be dimmed or brightened a few steps, which is useful too.
Love hearing another Aussie voice. Hot press paper is fun to play with granulation paints on. Thanks for the comparision.
Waving from Queensland 😊
I'll have to try my granulating paints on the hot press! Waving from Melbourne 😁
Love both paintings 😁👍
And the Gold of course 😉
Thank you! 😄
I love them, especially the space frog
Space Frog...I think that has to be the title of this painting. 🐸
Gorgeous
You did an incredible job. I like both paintings ❤
Thank you so much 😀
Lucky you Becky! Your benefactor was very generous. I use the Moulin du Roy CP paper. It’s the first 300gsm/140 lb pad of 100% cotton CP paper I purchased. I really enjoy using it. I just wish it came in a block. Beautiful paintings and enjoy your supplies!
It would be awesome in a block! I'm glad you love the paper too. 😊
@@BeckyTregear I forgot to add that I really did appreciate you mentioning you used a light box (or something like that) for the drawing. I don’t have a problem with anyone using a light box etc to help with the drawing. It’s nice that you mentioned! 😊
The gold finish on both pictures is gorgeous! Very informative video :)
Thank you! Gold fixes everything, haha. 😂
Thanks for your use of lots of stuff - light box, gold paint, cold and hot press paper, as well as the same colors in different ways! Much information for me :)
Light boxes/pads are worth their weight; such a handy tool especially for days when drawing is too hard, lol. I'm glad you liked all of the supplies I used. 😊
How delightful to receive this generous gift! It was helpful to see how differently the papers perform. The paint really diffuses softly into the cold press. I need to get some💕 Thank you for sharing the process with us. Your paintings are lovely.
Thank you! I find cold press so much easier to work with, but hot press has its appeal for the smoothness...great for pencils!
I use mixed media but I've used a bit of cotton...
I'm more used to hot press so my trick it's to paint slowly. Since the paint won't spread much you have full control of where the paint goes and it's cool for detailed paintings unlike the cold press which is great to let the paint flow and do its thing.
Another thing I do its use wet on dry. As said before going slowly and controlling each stroke it's the way to go in my opinion. I'm still learning too.
It's lovely as always and Swatch you later :)
You're definitely right; it works better when working slower and more precisely. Two things which I am not very good at doing, lol! It's always fun to learn different techniques. 😊
Thank you so much for sharing, I am so happy that you were able to try the hot press.
Thank you, me too! I've been wondering how the Moulin hot press would work. It's very nice! But the cold press is still better, haha!
Enjoyed video have to watch it two different days....
Twice the fun! 😂
Hi Becky, you did a wonderful job painting those two beautiful paintings. It was wonderful of the donor to send you those gifts.
Thank you, I was very thankful to receive these. 😊
That is such a generous gift 😍 I actually prefer hot press when I'm painting characters, when I know that I want to add tiny details that could be frustrating to add on cold press paper 😅 Also love the gold 😍😍😍😍
Hot press is great for details! I like it with pens and coloured pencils. 😊
Happy Mail! Yay! 😊
The best kind of mail! ❤️
That frog is so freaking adorable!
Thank you! And I said the same thing when I saw the photo; I just had to paint it! 😊❤️
Hi Becky, thanks for the link to the Facebook group for photo references, I’d never heard of it- it’s great!
Love your videos, Caroline UK
Isn't it such a great group! I have saved so many pictures onto my hard drive, far more than I can probably ever paint, lol!
I love Moulin du Roy paper too and was so disappointed when the USA suppliers stopped carrying it. Saunders Waterford is a second favorite, then Fabriano Artistico soft press are go to papers for me if I'm working on something I might sell. Kilimanjaro paper is my workhorse paper for everyday painting and sketching. It's only available a Cheap Joe's in the USA. Thanks for the video.
Kilimanjaro paper is definitely not one I've heard of...if ever I make it to the USA I'll have to try and find some. 😊
Nice paintings Becky. Karen from Canada
Thank you 🙂
What an interesting watercolor papers! I didn't heard about them, I didn't even know they existed!! I love that they're 100% cotton, and I want to try the hot pressed paper for colored pencils, because of the smoothness! Great review of those paper! Thanks!
I had to pick a difficult-to-get paper of course! 🤣 Hot press is great for pencil work. 😊❤️
@@BeckyTregear yeah, but this difficult-to-get paper is great 😅 I fund it on Jackson's!🥳
I like to use my hot press paper for when I want to do watercolor and colored pencil/ink/watercolor pencil together! The hot press is great to get those watercolor washes down but then to add detail here and there with other media.
Great ideas! Ink and pencils are so great on hot press. 😊
love all those palette, paper... 👩🏻🎨♥️
thanks for your video 💕💕💕
love your painting 💙💙💙
Thank you 😊❤️
Hello Becky!
I live in France so I thought I could tell you the info I gathered about Moulin du Roy/Canson/St. Cuthbert’s Mill.
I have been told that Moulin du Roy paper has been discontinued. Period. I wish it hadn’t because I really like this paper.
Canson is selling a 60% cotton paper which (I am guessing) is supposed to replace Moulin du Roy. I have tested it and it is a very good paper with a good price point. It felt like a 100% cotton paper, to be honest. Texture and colour are very similar to Arches Cold Pressed (which belongs to Canson as well). It doesn’t exist in the hot pressed version though, only cold pressed and rough textures.
Another great paper they have discontinued as well is Canson Heritage, which they have created to compete with Arches at the time they had lost the Arches manufacture. When they bought it again they decided to sell only Arches paper and stop manufacturing the Heritage line.
The other day I was chatting with the owner of a small art supplies shop nearby and we were looking at the Canson catalogue for resellers and I was surprised to see Saunders Waterford and Bockingford papers in it. This means that at some point Canson has bought St. Cuthberg’s Mill.
I only hope Canson will stop with all this mess and won’t change the papers anymore because this is becoming tiresome.
Have a great week ahead!
Thank you for all of the info! It's all just so confusing, haha. But yes, you're right in that Canson and St Cuthbert's Mill are now under the same umbrella. Saunders Waterford paper is everywhere now, and very easy to get in Australia. Thankfully it's nice paper and a decent replacement for Moulin....but it's definitely not the same!
@@BeckyTregear Indeed, it confusing and not easy to navigate as when we think we finally found “the paper”, they discontinue it or change the formula, texture, you name it. It has happened with Fabriano (I use their HP Artistico for my coloured pencil pieces) and I am really not happy.
Saunders Waterford is even better quality than Moulin du Roy according to people who have used both. But it is also quite expensive, almost as expensive as Arches.
Hi hun they r beautiful. X
Lovely! That’s a Daylily, Becky😀
A lily! Why could I not think of that...I had hibiscus on the brain. 😂
Such a cute little frog. Loved it as always. :)
Thank you! I had to paint that picture, it's such a great photo!
Got a portable air conditioner from Big W in Wonthaggi (all the places closer to the city sold out) just after Christmas. Does help me sleep much better. Was under $300
A bargain! I usually just run the ceiling fan, but if it's humid then it doesn't do much.
Beautiful paintings. I love the MGraham Watercolors, but not easy to buy here in Austria. Did you ever try Boahong paper? I like it very much, but another thing which is not easy to get here.
Baohong is lovely paper! Senior Art here stocks it, under the name The Master's Choice. There is only one store I know of who stocks M.Graham, and it is my most local one, The Art Shop. I got lucky there! 😂
This was really fascinating, Becky! I only use Hot Pressed paper for coloured / watercolour pencils or my Faber Castel brush pens. I've never tried it with watercolour. Maybe I should challenge myself, too?
Usually when you swap to just music, I slow the video right down to 0.5, but I was completely fascinated by watching the paint's movement on the HP paper at the 0.75 speed! It's amazing!
Well done for keeping at this, even though it was so new to you - I learned a lot from it, too!
I've read (on Jackson's, though it's not listed on the St Cuthbert's site yet) that this paper's now made at St Cuthbert's Mill in the south-west of the UK, instead of in France, and I wonder how it compares with the paper that you already have, which was made in France? The water used in the process will be very different, and the moulds, too, unless somehow they transferred those (a major undertaking, I think?!)
As for the paint box... wasn't there something about a low-buy??? 😄
😊
Some odd paragraph spacing happening on my comment ^^^ Not sure why! 🙃
I really need to try watercolour pencils on the hot press paper! I had to speed up the second painting because it took so long to do, and also to fit in with the music that I chose, lol! 😂 I have a feeling that my existing Moulin du Roy is also made in the UK, as the packaging design is exactly the same (New and Improved!), but I think I might have some much older sheets in my paper stash that I bought from an estate in 2017. I'll have a dig around and see if I can find any. This modern version is really great though, so I am happy with it! I'm still on a low-buy, because I keep receiving things from lovely viewers and art companies, haha! ❤
Lovely and fun. I haven't given up on my hot press Saunders Waterford. Seems great with gouache but then I think that is overkill. I think after doing 4-5 paintings on hot press that I have learned a bit more and will finish my handmade sketchbook with it. But it definitely is different. Super fun. Thanks for sharing!
I'll definitely need to try gouache out on it - I think it would be great for that! I'll be interested to see if gouache looks significantly different on cotton paper, or if cellulose is perfectly fine for it.
@@BeckyTregear This is exactly my dilemma with gouache and hot press, but maybe there are some differences that I am overlooking. Or maybe hot press would be great for watercolor and gouache mixed together. Some artists do such a great job getting such flat washes on hot press, but I love granulation and texture too much to keep all my washes flat :).
That music - that's some of the most epic flower painting I've seen, because of that music! Haha. I'm so happy I decided to watch this as I'm buying my first all-cotton paper, and was considering getting Moulin du Roy ordered from the UK...
They took such a long time to finish, I figured they needed some epic music! 😂 I highly recommend the paper, it's still my absolute all-time favourite!
@@BeckyTregear I've heard that the paper needs a good amount of soaking to work well - did you find the same thing? How long would you suggest soaking it?
@@aerialpunk I've never soaked it (or any watercolour paper for that matter!), I just paint straight on, sometimes painting on clear water first to get wet on wet technique.
@@BeckyTregear Oh really! Good to know then, thank you!
Thanks!
And thank you! 😊
Moulin do Roy is a beautiful paper. Fully vegan and i bought a load of large sheets and cut them up. But i just made a swatch in a few pieces that have been lying about and the paper sizing had failed a bit and the colours were dull and needed two coats.
So watch your papers is the lesson. Use them 😢😮
One i also love that the artist nimasprout uses for gouache paintings is rives bfk printing paper. To me it’s like a thinner lighter mouldin du Roy not pressed paper. Colours are crazy vibrant on it and gouache and ink beautiful on it.
It's heartbreaking when sizing goes bad! 😭 I have more paper than I can probably ever use but I'm trying to get through as much as possible before it completely fails. I may have some Rives printmaking paper in my stash - I'll have to have a rummage for it!
💜💜💜tfs💜💜💜
Great paintings. Have a great weekend Becky.
Thank you, and you too!
Hot press paper is the devil hahaha well it is for me! I have a pad that I keep trying to paint on and every single time it's ended up in the bin, so I'll stick to my cold and rough from now on, I loved your little froggy painting, how cute! and that gold paint is fantastic! Happy mail is the best, just goes to show how much people love your content! if I wasn't so poor I'd send all my fave youtubers some :D great video!
I'd give up with watercolour on the HP, I think, and stick with gouache, markers, coloured / watercolour pencils or brush pens, I think, rather than keep on trying with it and throwing it away. It's great for botanicals, with very fiddly specific requirements for precision, but not generally for watercolour. 😊
@@MrsBarnabas now gouache I can do!! Why didn't that even enter my head haha, thanks! :D
Cold press is just so much easier to paint on! Hot Press is usually a real nightmare, though my painting turned out much better than I thought and I'll definitely be trying out pencils on it as well! There are so many art Tubers on here; if someone chooses me to send something, I am always astounded and grateful beyond measure! I really don't expect anything, and I'm happy just to have my videos viewed! That's also much appreciated, so thank you very much for watching them. 😊
@@MrsBarnabas I'll put mine in the botanicals category, heheh. But yes, it is very challenging with watercolours. I'm glad I tried though!
You have learn to treat hot press differently than cold press. Less water, more pigment, more layering. There’s a reason why botanical artists use it, it is a great paper and not just for watercolour.
So if you still feel fairly new to watercolour, what art mediums did you specialise in before? Being fairly new to your channel, I actually assumed your main medium was watercolour.
I want to learn watercolour, I just don't know where to start.
Oh I have a few years of watercolour experience, just not on hot press paper, haha! But overall I "got serious" with art around 2017, initially with oil paints and coloured pencils, then rapidly falling in love with watercolours. I did a watercolour class in 2018 at FTG Library and watched a lot of videos on here, with more of a focus on Urban Sketching. Teoh Yi Chie's channel has a lot of great content, especially a few years ago when he made a lot of videos about paper and different watercolours, how to paint with them etc.
@@BeckyTregear I started doing oils and acrylic in 2020, before covid. I have tried water colour a couple of times and made lots of messes. It's the brain working backwards with oils and trying to flip it for watercolour. But forcing myself to learn pencils and now really loving them, I'm hopeful that I'll be able to pick up watercolour too. I've dabbled in alcohol markers too and those have helped me a lot with starting light and building colour, so there is hope for me. I keep seeing water colours I want to buy and then remember that I don't yet use the ones I have enough to justify buying more 🤣
Thanks! Lucky you with all the freebies and we’re not even two months into 2023 😂
Haha I know, it has been a little crazy with how many things I've received lately - AND there's something else in on the way, possibly for next month! Makes low buy easier, lol😂
@@BeckyTregear 😂
Love the artwork! Hope you get a good nights sleep soon :) xxx
Off and on...the cooler nights helped! 😊
Such a fun video! I have a question, I would like to set up a Sennelier watercolor palette myself but I have a white plastic palette that closes and there are empty wells on both sides of the palette, do you think it will hold up the Sennelier watercolors with the honey binder? Also which brown do you think is more useful? Transparent brown or warm sepia if I already plan to have a raw umber and a burnt sienna in a palette?
I think you'll have to keep the palette open and flat for quite a long time before they "set" enough! Honey based paints are notorious for running; I've learned that from experience when one of my travel palettes ran everywhere even after the paints looked solid, doh! Maybe small amounts would be ok though. Both browns are great! I had warm sepia first, and that has always been a useful colour, a nice dark brown and much warmer than raw umber.
Beautiful paintings!! Is that first reference photo from the Facebook group? Did you paint the flowers wet n wet? Will you share your reference photo to the Facebook group? Did you paint those blue flowers wet n wet? Tfs
Last question. Do you print out your photos on plain copy paper?
@@Horsewoman-pt2ku Thank you! Answering your questions: Yes first photo is from Facebook - I don't think I can specifically link them in my description, but I did include the photographer's name so hopefully you can find her picture. I have not yet uploaded mine; I am very behind in getting reference images up, but I can upload it to Facebook if you'd like it! Yes I painted the first layer of hydrangeas with wet on wet, and then upper layers was more of a hybrid of wet on dry and wet on wet. Yes, I printed my pictures on plain old copy paper - more for the outlines, and I used them alongside the photos on my phone, which have a better colour representation. I hope that helps 🙂
You may like Hot Press for Gouache ;)
Yes, that's what I like it for. ☺☺💖💖 Karen from Canada
I'll definitely try gouache on it!
Moulin is a very tricky paper to use. When it was first released it used to have the hardest sizing ever. Then Canson got some very bad reviews, including mine lol and then they changed the surface. And recently they changed it for one more time and discontinued the full sheets as well but this paper has again a very hard and unforgiving sizing.
The Hibiscus botanical turned out great but it would have been easier and less time consuming for you if you painted first the background and then the Hibiscus flower. That is almost a rule no matter what kind of paper you use. The background goes always first because that is the only way to avoid having hard outlines on your subject whatever that is . The second painting needed a bit more work. It would have been better to slow a bit down and wait the Moulin paper to dry and apply a second and a third wash that would make your flower composition super realistic. Hot Pressed paper is tricky to use because it is very smooth and in case of Moulin paper, it has also a hard sizing. So you have to apply the first layer, wait for the paper to dry, and then apply the second wash etc etc etc.
That is how you have to work with this paper.
What would life be like if we didn't bend the rules sometimes? 😁
Does the watercolor disperse more easily on hotpress paper?
I usually find cold press is better for dispersal, but this hotpress did well. It also depends on how much water is on it too; I usually put way too much on, haha!
canson have too many paper brands. dare i ask the difference between moulin and heritage?
Not a clue, haha! Other than Heritage was more expensive when I was buying.
There are people who manage to do watercolours in the limted time of online life drawing which is very demanding.
I have done that before...my figures were pretty blobby! 😂
First comment!
