My bunny is an indoor bunny. She put her nose to a beetle in our kitchen yesterday and actually yelled and ran. It terrified everyone because she had never made a sound before. We didn’t think she could. We thought she was hurt or worse. We come around the corner to her cleaning her face. So yeah. I tried to take her outside once as a baby bun and she climbed up me, I refused to try it again after that. She’s my little princess and she doesn’t like outside. The outdoors are where our ancestors lived, people tend to forget that. Love you so much! Thank you for advocating for these pure fluffy angels.

Me and my partner adopted our bunny from a meat farm. Latte is a flemish giant, in our country they are bred almost exclusively for meat. He was kept in a tight hutch outside with all of his siblings. When he arrived at our flat, he was afraid to come out of the carrier, but when he did, he kept running around his room, doing binkies, he was so happy. It took so little for him to be euphoric. We still aren't letting him run around the entire house without supervision, but we're letting him out more and more often. He's been here for a bit over a month and he's not afraid of people anymore. He asks for petting constantly and licks us back. We love him so much

My mother-in-law tried to get me a hutch and I got Shen. I told her not to waste her money because his home will be my bedroom. She got to see firsthand why I chose to tell her not to waste her money. Binkies, flops, BIG personality. I, also, had to explain to her that we do have predators roaming the area. Feral cats, neighbors' dogs, possums, racoons, just to name a few. Plus, Kentucky has a LOT of predatory birds. Especially owls and hawks.

Initially I had a really nice and large outdoor setup and would bring my bunny inside during the summer or when it rained. But he got diseases (mites and bacterial infections) so he is indoors. I'm glad my husband is totally fine with the indoor setup because now my husbamd also helps me out, by giving my bunny food and water in the morning while before I had to get up extra early to feed him before going to work. Having him indoors is the best! Thanks Loreli for all your tips and help. We all are a lot happier now. 🌺😘

    • @michellevictor4876

Mites typically come from hay and can be a problem for indoor rabbits too. If you find mites, throw away the hay and take them to an exotics vet to start appropriate treatment. Mites are also very common but in healthy rabbits it's not something you're likely to notice without a vet visit as they will keep ontop of it through the course of grooming themselves and by their companion. If mites becomes a problem, there's usually an underlying condition.

I started out with outdoor meat rabbits but grew very attached and decided not to use them for that purpose. I found these videos years ago and slowly re-homed several buns. Now we have 2 left that have been spayed and neutered, they solely live indoors. We have cats so the rabbits don’t free range in the entire house but have one floor to themselves. One rabbit is 8 and the other 7. They definitely seem much happier and healthier indoors. I love your videos and have loved watching your relationship with Lennon over the years!

I got my bunnies in June. I had no expertise with rabbits. My mom got them for my kids. So my dad built a lovely hutch for them. A few weeks later one of my bunnies was dead from heat I belive. I quickly learned my lesson. I started watching all your videos. Now my bunny is inside and free roaming. He is happy and thriving. Even my 12 year old cat is leaving him alone. I hate that our other bunny had to die for me to do the research. But here we are and we are so loving our indoor bun.

Hi Lorelei, I have to say a few months ago, I was walking down the street when I found a pet store, and they have a bunny inside a fish tank, I was so angry I decided to buy the rabbit, but didn't have idea how to take care of it, I knew they usually put them in cages but didn't have the money to well, get the cage. So I let him be indoors, and I found your channel, so I bunny proof ny house, and bought things he needed, now I can say he is happy. He can even go outside, because I have a back yard, and I let him go outside when I'm home, but he prefers to be inside and just watch through the window. Anyway, this message is basically to say thank you, you have helped me to give my bunny a good life and make him happy, so thank you very much.

I do have two rabbits that live outside, as my parents cannot handle having my 2 rabbits indoors. Despite this, I use all of your other advice and plus, my rabbits live in a huge covered aviary which is as big as a room, and they have a massive hutch for shelter than is NEVER locked up. I really appreciate your videos, as my rabbits live outdoors and they could be in a lot of trouble is I hadn’t found you’re channel. They always do binkies whenever I come in with food and I’ve built an amazing relationship with all three of my rabbits, that I have had, especially my old rabbit who is almost 11 years old and lost his brother last year. Thank you Lorelei!!! ❤️ Luckily where I live in the UK there are not many predators such as stray dogs, but obviously there are still dangers and I’m still trying to convince my parents ❤️

I think in the UK our gardens are so much safer. Add to that covered run, supervised time on the lawn. I mean there are people who have loads of Guinea pigs and they all come out for lawn time and they’re are fine. I think the US is a completely different predatory landscape in terms of wild animals roaming around.

My bunnies are inside but absolutely love to run around the garden! (UK and secure, supervised garden play time). Our bunnies were rescued and had been kept in a hutch their whole life. Therefore when making their area we chose to buy a new hutch (something they were familiar with) but just fill it with blankets and their food. The hutch is always open and they have the whole room but its almost like a safety thing for them, they choose to sleep in it at night and sit in there but love to explore and play in the rest of the space. This works really well for them and us, we've been complimented so many times for how happy our rabbits are!

Well done video! You covered it all. I have two fully free range, litter box using indoor house rabbits (2 bonded neutered males- I know - unusual). I have had house rabbits for over 20 years. They are my favorite house pet. Rabbits live in families. The family bond between a human and a bunny is amazing. I always describe their personalities as an amalgam of a dog, a cat and a horse. Rabbits heartbeats are much faster than ours to begin with. They are easily scared to death just by seeing a predator. I saw this first hand when I found a small dead wild bunny in our horse barn one afternoon. There were no marks on his body. Rabbits can learn up to 30 different commands! They are so smart. They come when they hear their name, they understand "no" and so much more if you give them a chance. If you have other house pets (cats and dogs) they can all get along so beautifully if you introduce them fully supervised for a at least a month to ensure everyone is respecting each other and communicating effectively. Rabbits tend to take on the behaviors of the pet they live with. My rabbits who lived with my cats would sit in the the window to wait for me to come home or try to share the same food (cat nibbled on hay and rabbit ate a couple of cat kibbles- ok if not more than a couple eaten). Every night when I go to bed my bun snuggles with us for about an hour before leaving for the night. In the morning, he jumps in the bed for morning snuggles just before our alarm goes off. Melts my heart.

I found that your way of presenting the outdoor bunnies was a little more on the negative side. I personally have my bunnies indoors but I know many people who have their bunnies outside and it‘s amazing! Bunnies definitely need a lot of plants, twigs, digging boxes with sand or soil etc and if they are outside they have all that. If they‘re inside you need to provide that.
It would have been nice to talk about how to set up outdoor enclosures that are safe because if they are safe, bunnies can have a wonderful, long and healthy life outside.

I agree. My bunnies have access to our home, but prefer to live in their large, safe outdoor enclosure, even though the door to our house that leads directly into their area is almost always open. Unless the climate is too severe, one can have perfectly happy and healthy outside bunnies, as long as one makes sure to provide a 100% safe area.

@@lazyhomebody1356 i don’t know where she said she only concentrates on indoor bunnies. I think she wants to inform and help people realize that bunnies don’t belong in cages and are awesome animals. There is no reason to exclude the outdoors option, because some people maybe only have space outside and are thrown off by many here telling them “it’s not safe” when it’s a matter of how you secure the enclosure. It’s good that she tells people they should watch out for predators but I would have loved to see how to provide a safe space outside, so many people can have bunnies (and keep them correctly) and don’t feel like they are limited to keeping them inside.

I have an indoor rabbit. Thanks to your videos I had the confidence to finally get a rabbit, a pet I've wanted since I was a teenager but never thought I would be able to take care of because they're considered exotic animals and need a lot of work. Thanks to your videos and others videos breaking down all of their needs( I also had no idea they could be litter box trained and didn't need cage back then), I have an adorable Dutch bunny I adopted from a local shelter. His name is Benny and I couldn't be happier!! He keeps me on a good routine which is something I've struggled with in the past and I am happy I can provide him with a living space much larger than a shelter cage. I hope he is happy. He seems to be. He loves to run around and jump up and down from the bed all the time and occasionally binky! When I can move to a bigger place I will look into adopting another bunny friend for him, but for now I think he is very happy! Thank you so much for all the information you have provided!

It hadn't escaped yet when I found it, but we replaced the screen with a reinforced screen. I really don't agree with this video. I thought for a second that this was going to be a video where no answer is the correct answer. Keeping a rabbit outdoors is so underrated, because it is natural! I will keep my rabbit indoors when I grow up, but keeping it outside is absolutely no problem for me or the rabbit. I know many people with rabbits, and they all keep them outside here in Norway. A friend of mine even had a pet rabbit that lived for 12,5 years outside! 💖
Your bunny care is awesome, so don't get me wrong, but I feel like many of you become a bit intense from time to time. Please don't inform people that rabbits shouldn't live outside, because it is not true. I think that both indoor- and outdoor rabbits can live happily. 😊

    • @DellaStreet123
      @DellaStreet123 Рік тому +4

Americans tend to humanize their pets -- I am a Scandinavian myself and I'll never get it. I guess I could live in America for how many years I may still have left and still not understand why people make Halloween dresses for their pets, put death notices in newspapers and the like. Don't get me wrong on the last part, I have gone through plenty of grief by losing a pet, but why would the relatives of an animal care if you put an ad into the newspaper? It is not wrong to look at things from an animal perspective -- for an animal, immediate needs always outweigh risks. To me it is non-negotiable that a rabbit must live with at least one fellow rabbit as a companion. Lorelai, as a human, would suffer great psychological damage if she was deprived of the company of humans and had nobody except for a hippo as a companion. Because of her humanity, she can handle the absence of a fellow human being longer, as humans we are wired that way, but eventually we will cave in as well. Rabbits are pack animals and not even 24/7 attention from a human and and sharing that human's entire living space can replace that. If you want to keep your rabbits inside because you cannot stand the thought that one of your pets might (again, might, we never had that happen) drop dead from the mere sight of a predator, then this is fine. If you feel that your rabbits should enjoy the elements, then an outside pen is fine as well. We have had many outdoor pets, including pet livestock. Our chickens have always lived outside unless the bird flu or some other disease was going on. In almost 40 years, we lost exactly two chickens to predators, a buzzard slew two. Note that raptors want to live, too! They had mites a few times, which we got rid of with the help of diatomaceous earth. The lifespan of a chicken is similar to that of a rabbit, as long as you don't eat either of them. How many people keep indoor chickens?

I saw him in minus 10 degree Celsius sleeping on top of the snow and he's totally fine, healthy, happy.. in the summer he sometimes sleeps in the sun, sometimes in the shade. Yes. My rescued bunny has an outdoor, predator proof, bunnio, gets supervised outdoor playtime, and also has an indoor living area. Due to the former feral cat, who thinks she's prey, she doesn't get to free roam in the home without supervision and locking the kitty in another room. It's been 30+ years since we've had an indoor, free roaming rabbit, not a very common practice back then, and it's very exciting to see this becoming more common and accepted.
I've had rabbits free range in a safe yard and live for 15+ years and I've had many that didn't. Inside, just like with cats, is much safer. However, it's not always practical to keep a bunny indoors due to other family members, animals, etc. It's nice to see some great outdoor bunnios.

We give them access to the yard (of course, they're vaccinated and dewormed) and firmly believe this is why they're so little destructive indoors - they' don't chew on furniture, cables, etc - because they get all the natural stimulation they need. I really think everybody should let their bunny outside as much as possible (with all the necessary precautions). There’s still this huge misconception that rabbits don’t need to be treated for parasites on a regular basis because there’s no “rabbit brand” of treatment. My bunny is indoors but we take him outside to play too, he is free roamed at day and he has a place to be at night so he don’t make a mess. And he doesn’t like the sun sadly but we have a big door/window he is near sometimes. Nice video btw!

Lorelei, We love you no matter how you play with your hairstyles. We don’t worry about Lennon’s hairstyle either.😁

That's lovely. The contract you have with keeping a pet, is to make them feel safe and loved. It is my experience, that a rabbit indoors develops more character.

Jasper is a completely indoor rabbit. He has a designated play pen for his litter box and free ranges my bedroom during most of the day.
