Clearest process video I found so far.

This is gonna sound strange but they way you shot this and the delicacy and preciseness of your hand movements, perfectly rocking the plate to get the solution back in the bottle or removing the lens cap gently in combination with the subtle music make this video strangely relaxing and beautiful. The video is art filming art. Great job.

I really enjoy seeing the latter process for developing photographs in and around the 1800's. Did not know the process has so many technical steps that required patience and awareness of the chemicals being used to complete an image. The final result was very defining.

Quite nice that you found some actual 19th-century items to use here: besides the camera, plate holder and ground glass, you also have the silver bath enclosure, the oil lamp, and even the containers for collodion and for varnish

You heat the plate to dry it after the wash. It is also necessary to heat the plate before putting on the sandarac varnish.

My goodness that is beautiful. Nothing like developing your photos. I miss the time I had to do it. If I could I'd love to have a shot at tintype.

The resolution of a tintype is absolutely amazing. It's damn near real life HD, isn't it?

Very helpful to someone like me who is just about to start learning this. I have a big studio, with lots of continuous light and a nice darkroom beside it so It I am looking forward to making my own tin and ambro types.

    very very interesting.
    I'm a antique photographer
who was trained in using 4/5
    negative film.
processing in printing in black and white and color.
in my training I studied tintype and glass type.
but only as a history course.
at the time it seemed to be a massive pain in the ass.
but watching it done makes it seem much faster and much simpler.
I have one very important question
    how much are the materials.
    thank you for the video
    hoping you will respond.
    Nick

@zmanphoto Very neat and informative. Is there a way to transfer an image to tintype that was previously taken? I am looking into trying to create tintypes of early family photos to give out at Christmas, have looked everywhere and can't find the information anywhere.
Very interesting stuff regardless! All the best!

I've been studying this video for quite some time. I'm a big fan of your other works. In particular, the images left out in the weather.
Question: What aperture were you using for this exposure? Roughly 9 seconds.
My biggest challenge is getting the exposure right, and the developer pour smooth.

Are the short exposure and development times what makes it a positive and not a negative? I assume if you did the same thing on glass you'd have an ambrotype? Is it more the exposure or the development that determines that? Thanks!

I notice you leave you plates in the developer for quite a while (35 seconds), and you're still getting very rich blacks. Anything longer than 20 seconds on my end, and I'm getting a lot of fogging. Are you doing anything to cut your developer to make it less aggressive?

    • @calvinf9218
      @calvinf9218 4 роки тому +1

I imagine it could theoretically be diluted with distilled water as most devs are just sodium thiosulfate solutions. Dilution should make the dev time longer and more 'controllable'

    • @calvinf9218

The plate is heated before varnishing to ensure even flow of the varnish to prevent artefacts caused by congealing
