I can take a moment to break down the companions, from their default set up (minus spoiler companion cause i haven't used him) Non-caster companions: Wenduag, Lann, Regil, Greybor Semi caster: Cameilla, Arushaelae, Woljif, Seelah Full Caster: Ember, Nenio, Soseil, Daeran
As for missing out if you build a full merc party, you will be forced often in the story to bring certain party members for plot missions, especially early in the game (up to Act 3 without a doubt) so you will find yourself forced to leave some custom party members at base often. The writing for this game and the camp interactions are very nice, so i would say you will be missing out on a chunk of the charm of this game, especially since the supermajority of the cast you get early level enough that you can pretty much just build them how you like. I feel they did a better job of diversifying the starting party this time around than they did in Kingmaker. By the time the game opens up, your cast of party members is diverse enough that i didn't feel like i was punished for not putting some feature in my MC (looking at you, Early Mobility Checks in Kingmaker) Finally, have fun getting the money together to hire 4-6 mercs for a custom party. The cost to buy a custom character ramps up quickly based on the highest level character in your party, so if that is your intent better penny pinch from the prologue
The companions seems really ranged and evil oriented, Im feeling like your kinda being forced to be evil and be a tank. Unless of course you go good then you have Seelah, but it seems like not many will get along with her.
I disagree with many of Owlcat's character alignments. Daeran to me is a poster child for Chaotic Neutral, baffles me that he's been pigeon-holed as NE. Ember is _clearly_ CG. Seelah is NG, which is so dumb considering that she's the archetypal Paladin in Pathfinder lore - very badly written character. Regill is not evil, he is the epitome of LN. Greybor is LE.
The companions are great story wise. Unfortunately they are not very consistent in terms of power. Some are powerhouses while others are underpowered. Greybor for example is a fascinating character but his stats make him less than optimal at his job which is a pity
Only one cleric companion? Wow haha it will be hard to play on harder difficulty without pure cleric. Whether the main play as cleric or tanker need to have healing attribute then
One of the companions is an Oracle who heals better than the cleric, the witch can also heal well and so does the shaman. Besides if you want an optimized cleric you can hire one via mercenary system
dear god almost all of them are wizard hybrid, why god, why do you hate me, i was hoping for some party members, who didnt suck at melee fighting, not all of them sucking at it
Regill, Greybor and Trever all come in as pure melee attackers. Regill and Greybor both dual wield, and Greybor does sneak attacks which means he does a LOT of damage. Wenduag /Lann are pretty good weapon damage dealers early on, and so is woljif even if he's also a caster - finesse training with daggers means he adds his dex modifier to damage with them, and as a rogue he has sneak attack dice. And he can also sneak attack with his spells, which means his cantrips can do actual damage, when for full wizards they're most of the time absolutely useless.
Wenduags class SUCKS! It's like Owlcat forgot to change her. A stock fighter wtf... I think she should of been a kineticist dark elementalists.., or a least a slayer. Her spider legs giving her higher strength then a typical creatures her size would of suited her theme. Jumping around the field slicing people up with two swords is how I picture it. Lowest Cha as she is scary af and lower her con maybe. Right now if I want arueshalae in the party I feel like wenduag is a waste/ double archer.
She is a level 1 fighter, also if you think fighter sucks you clearly dont know 2 shits about them. She is way better than Lann ever could be. Spec her into dualwielding throwing axes with weapon training, and thanks to armor training she can easily use medium armor and reach silly AC for a ranged character. Besides, she is a level 1 fighter, you can literally change her into anything you want.
@@NoBuddy89 Yeah, but from a lore standpoint, she is hunter, not fighter. Hell, why not bloodrager? She drank demon blood and all other mongrels like raging. So we have new class in our team, one that wasnt in kingmaker and one that makes sence for her

Interesting that most of the human companions are people of colour. It is nice that Owlcat had a particular story it wanted to tell and didn't let finding a "perfect" demographic balance shape their presentation. Kudos
I'm not sure whether you are being sarcastic or not, but there are only three human companions. Of those, Seelah was not created by Owlcat. She was borrowed from the source material because he class and background were a perfect fit for the game, and like with the first game, they wanted to have one of the official Iconic characters as a companion. Anyhow, they used her official appearance and had no choice in that. As I said, they picked her for her class and background, not her racial appearance. And the spoiler character has to match her own racial appearance for reasons, so they didn't actually choose that one either. That just leaves the third, who I don't think is a POC? Not sure honestly. In any case, as you can see, this just naturally happened as a result of the story, as you said, and was not in any way done on purpose.

I mean you get her level one. Maybe she gave it up to become seelah bard of Iomade lol
I definitely turned her into a bard.
i suprise that Nenio get this much hate, i actually like her.
So we have new class in our team, one that wasnt in kingmaker and one that makes sence for her
Lol Woljif is super missable. I'm in act 3 and have no idea who he is
He's in the basement of the tavern. If you missed him it means you just didn't take the time to explore the place and talk to people there.
@@ashurasama the game is enormous, I don't have time to take time to talk to everybody in every location and look at everything
@@thejake1453 if you don't have time i suggest you play something else, wotr is one of the longest games I've ever played and I've played quite a lot of RPGs.
@@ashurasama Nah, that's fucken terrible advice.
