- Kyle is visiting NYC to check out EV charging infrastructure - in this video he visits two Revel charging hubs to see how they're running. For the most part, they're charging their own fleet but these hubs are open to the public, which is cool.

Whelp! We put in the wrong ending clip for the next video so after UA-cam finishes processing don't be alarmed if it seems to cut off abruptly. Look out for the Flo AC curbside charging video in the next few days! So cool to see Tritium and Revel making DC charging a reality in NYC!
Long time subscriber here, but I too was blown away by the LOCATION. Born and bred in BK but moved away 45 years ago, but my Granma lived across the street from those last REVEL chargers. Times sure have changed in NYC.
I'd recommend Revel to everyone in NYC. They employ their drivers with paid time off and benefits unlike Uber or Lyft. Obviously it's all EV which is perfect in start stop driving. As consumers we should vote with our wallets.
I'm only familiar with their moped rental service in the bay area but I'm a fan of that as well!
@@at0mly not sure if they plan to launch cabs there but they are here in NYC and I pick them whenever I need a vehicle. Obviously in NYC mostly rely on subways, bikes or walking but a Tesla is great for an airport drop.
Good to know for our holiday visits
@@MC-bm3cy Always good to have a third option when surge pricing is on fire everywhere. Revel also surge prices, so it's sometimes a bit of a pain to have to choose between options.
That is great and all but once robotaxi is live the drivers are no longer needed.
In my part of the UK, they replaced the old type of lamp posts and all LEDs.
Not only the upgrade paid for itself in under 2 years.
But due to a lot less power needed for lighting the same circuit/power cables can now be used for slow-charging cars overnight and up to 4 cars can be plugged into a socket with is part of the lamppost for on street parking and charging
Thank you for your insight ! It's a very simple yet impressive idea there ! @QALibrary
We already had new (old tech) lights in the lamposts many years ago. So it was very dim at night. Now they are replacing the lamps in the city to LED, and they said it was around $5.4 million, and would lower the energy needed by 30%. (they used something called high pressure sodium-lamps before). They said they thought they would save money cause you dont have to service led lamps as much. (A 100w sodium lamp is equal to a 1000w halogen lamp) so if the city had halogen lamps, it would be a big saving (and a lot of electricity to use :)
LEDS ARE TERRIBLE LIGHTS FOR YOUR EYES DUDE
And now they're retrofitting them with red filters because white light is attracting bugs at night and leading them to a massacare because bats are just gobbling up the inspects at night.
Why are those Revel cars not out driving, it must cost a fortune to just leave them in the garage.
They're probably gearing up for their expansion into other boroughs.
Exactly. Reminds me of all those abandoned EVs in China.
Can't say without more info. Could be a brand new installation, just now ramping up, or just getting new cars.
You see the scraps from wrapping the cars are still on the floor. And the staff are busy charging cars. If the cars were just sitting around, they wouldn't be busy charging them.
Nothing in this video indicates how much business Revel is doing. But it certainly does suggest they have cars available now.
@@thedopplereffect00The claims of "abandoned EVs" in China have been debunked. Those claims are pure, unadulterated BS.
I don’t get it - how does a ride share company have such a huge amount of cars just sitting in this garage? Why aren’t they outside actually ferrying passengers and making money?
At any point in time half charge half ride.

When you do the Flo Street chargers don’t forget to mention that the city is not at all enforcing ,EV charging only signs that they have put up. They are always iced. These kinds of programs don’t work without enforcement.
If they started ticketing and towing the ICE vehicles it could help pay for putting the charging in.
Can confirm. I used them frequently but struck out more times than I’d care to admit
It's so annoying how poor the user interfaces are on chargers - not giving you status on exactly what's going on, especially if there are problems - seems so common but there's really no excuse
Tesla has no interface. Best part is no part.
That doesn't seem to be a problem for Tesla, just plug in the cable and it works.

It’s time for New York to start doing what England does!! And that’s to make charger spaces FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES ONLY and produce parking tickets for the ICE vehicles in the charging bays.
I wouldn't park a nice car on any NYC street. It's a daily occurrence that you'll see people try to squeeze into a tight spot and if they can't fit they'll push the other car with their car to make it fit

Why does it seem like Chat gpt wrote this comment 🤔
What is needed at this and most other EV charging stations is a squeegee and bug wiper, plus sales of windshield washer fluid, compressed air, normal consumable car things.
For real. On road trips I have to pull my Ioniq 5 into gas stations just to clean the back windshield.
You were mentioning load balancing granularity, but every charger you used can balance its 150kW only as 2x75kW
Looks like a complete mess down there. Several don't work, others payment terminals don't work and it's expensive. Hope that isn't the future of charging.
That is the future of charging for anybody not named Tesla.
Take a shot every time he says “ripping”
I am glad that Kyle came back to NY to do a test on the charging and that he said NY is a perfect place to have an EV. Good job.
this is what i want to see in chargers, payment by bank card not BS annoying apps!

Meh… I would rather just plug in and charge.

It's great you captured the credit card terminal freezing up. I would love to deep dive into why in the world the charging industry has so much trouble with point of sale systems. Seems like every other industry has figured it out. What's the background story here? Why is it so hard to have six nines reliability on a simple internet connected device?
The internet. Especially in an enclosed concrete building in the basement.
Yeah I don’t understand how I can swipe my card at a grocery store twice a week without fail but every time I use a CCS unit it errors out
wouldn't be surprised if the charging unit had not entirely reset from the AmEx attempt with the reader and there was a sync problem between the two. still sucks, but it probably worked itself out after a bit.
@@chirpie11 these PayTer units have a LAN port on the back, so I'd imagine they would wire that instead of the optional cell modem, especially in a garage situation.

Interesting to see that none of the Revel cars have Aero caps on the wheels. I guess they either would get stolen or fall off so they just leave them off. I guess in the urban environment the Aero wheels wouldn’t really matter because of lower speeds.
In lower Manhattan, all cars have at least 85 dents from running into other things, mostly cars. I know because I counted them. The covers would be shredded.
It pains me watching you try to use an Amex Platinum to charge which only gives 1x points when your Apple Card tap gives 2% cash back
Kyle, not sure if you have noticed but Easton Maryland finally got a Tesla Supercharging station with Magic Dock added.. First one in Maryland.. Went live like 2-3 weeks ago I think
Are you actually seeing CCS cars charging there? I ask because I frequently drive through the Eastern Shore in my travels between Virginia beach and NYC. The charging opportunities for my BMW EV are pretty much non-existent until I get to Wilmington.
Nice. Waiting for the Sun UK newspaper to grab the shots of the cars queuing to show the problem with EVs 😂
It seems like a site that big could use a natural gas LM2500 30Mw turbine onsite. Not sure if they could do a DC generator and get more efficient without the AC-DC conversion loss? But then the illusion that electric vehicles are "clean" may be broken, and it is better to hide the fuel burn in some poor areas outside the city limits.
Yup. Dig up the coal in Wyoming. Ship to to the East coast by rail. But hey. We are saving the world!
Natural gas co-generation in city limits is incredibly efficient in the winter. Especially for those big buildings.
@@jo9732 Wyoming coal is some of the best.
@@thedopplereffect00 Heat recovery to make steam to heat the nearby buildings is a great second use.
Solar with storage is cheaper than coal or "natural" gas now...
This definitely has the vibe of a company over spending to impress investors just before they go bankrupt. I don't see how all this infrastructure can be profitable
I’m curious to know whether Revel received the ev tax credit for every one of those Teslas.
It would be interesting to check with the Revel and Uber drivers experience using EVs in NYC. Max Miles per day, average miles per day, when/where they charge, waiting at the airports, etc.
I used Revel when I was in NYC last week and it was flawless experience for me
Hey, I saw 4 new chargers put up at a senior center. A month later they were all broken. The copper was stolen in them.

Can they please come set up DC hubs in Ottawa Canada? We are severely lacking here. We need your channel to start shedding light on just how shit EV charging is in general in Canada since there’s no UA-camrs covering the Canadian scene at all. Since you already cover Europe, would be great if you did some coverage up here.
Ottawa is a black hole of DCFCs and I cringe whenever we visit think it’s the nationals capital and EV infrastructure is so bad . We have it pretty good in Quebec though.
@@simplygregsterev Hell the Maritimes have it better than most of Ontario. Unless you’re in Toronto, all of Ottawa is a black hole. When I visit my parents in the GTA, their town has 2 major 400-series highways and it’s the gateway to cottage country & yet they have just a few slow level 2s, no DC. They don’t even have Tesla Superchargers (have to go to Toronto for that). There doesn’t seem to be any pressure from the public or willingness from elected officials in this province to do anything but the absolute bare minimum.
@@Wiseguy1138 the last Superchargers before the start of cottage country is Barrie next is Port Severn iirc. There is a bigger Ivy setup in at Innsfil iirc but yea it’s a total joke in Ontario. I did a very out of spec style 1000km road trip using only Circuit Électrique here in QC on Saturday with a Tesla. The video will be up eventually on my channel but it was too easy lol
Looking at this, battery fires are the farthest thing from anyone's mind. That proves to me, that EV fires are a VERY rare thing!! That might be a reason why the chargers don't charge any faster, but more likely, its just the available power at that venue, to charge so many cars at the same time.
great video. Think you’ve got the wrong outro clip on the end though
Shit I do. Fixing!!
Flo is a Canadian company based in Quebec. It’s also known as Add Énergie.. their DCFCs and L2 street dispensers are the backbone of the Circuit Électrique network here in Quebec. L2 street charging is everywhere in Montreal. My area has around 100 L2dispensers alone.. 1$ per hour It’s by far the best public network in North America and flys under the radar.
We just visited NYC two weeks ago. We tried to use Revel as much as we could for ride share. It's awesome to see the behind the scenes for the charging. Each driver we talked to loved driving the Teslas. The revel network is growing and I hope they can expand to other areas quickly.
You need to be a special kind of masochist to drive a car in west Brooklyn/Manhattan. I wonder what the actual market serves... isn't this just a taxi service? It's not really "ride sharing" when you have professional drivers who are company employees driving company-owned vehicles whose sole job is to go around picking people up to take them somewhere... that's what a taxi service is.
They may have to call it “ridesharing” to get around New York City’s restrictive taxicab, licensing rules, which of cars purchases on medallions
It makes sense to have large numbers of 22kW AC in car parks, especially if you can put canopies and solar in at the same time. But equally there is a need for 250/350kW DC hubs and I think some hubs dedicated to delivery and taxi drivers, with facilities for those that are driving all day. Somewhere to chill and grab a coffee/meal while they top up their vehicle.
Not ac if localized solar is used and or onstie bess systems, instead do 25-50kwh dc so less total conversion losses&heat. 👍🏻
@@4literv6 Don't most DC to DC converters convert to AC first? The answer is yes.
@@tedmoss incorrect dc-dc steps up or down the voltage example 400v main pack down to 12-24-48v to run all your other accessories or charge the auxiliary 12v battery. A rectifier switches dc-ac 3 phase and an inverter switches ac back to dc. 😀
22kW AC is way too much
They should seriously consider one leg 277/480 v 3p L2. Tesla absolutely supports 277v a/c.
Even at 80% of 20A that’s 4.4kW , using super inexpensive NACS
Leave them plugged up, use the DCFC for rapid turn around times.
So one 480v 3 pole 20A would feed 3 tesla at 4.4kW. That’s super efficient and cheap. They could run dozens of 20A small connectors. I think that will also be the biggest improvement to airport parking. 277v would be cheaper to deploy and reduce voltage sag. Using 20A would dramatically lower the cost for placing dozens of connections at a site
Kyle, it's awesome... the way you look at EVs from all different angles.
Why aren't the Revel cars on the road generating revenue? Something doesn't add up.
It blows my mind that people choose to live jammed on top of each other like that, and pay a premium for it. Cool installation though. I think my 32 amp level 2 charger is the most ambitious charging infrastructure in my town.
To answer the Q on what else you need at a charge station beyond vending machines and trash cans: water and squeegee, free air pump, and a canopy.
Great technology. No exhaust flumes.
Damn, we need hubs like that for us here in L.A.😮... 49 cents is becoming the standard so it seems. Electrify america also raised their pricing (although it's 48 cents).... Kyle seemed so excited that he went up a ramp that was for entering only.😄....
as an ev6 owner I was hoping you would have walked over to see how much that red ev6 was pulling....
You mentioned that the parking garage has free 1 hr ev charging but you still had to pay?🤔... I've lived in New York decades ago, traffic is always bumper to bumper, which is why a lot of people just take the subway. I think it would take most people an hour just to get out of that parking lot if you're 3 levels down during lunch time... doesn't seem like it would be worth the hassle for just an hr.... regardless, New York is making strides in building an ev infrastructure unlike us in California who are still struggling to find a place with more than 4 chargers available...that actually work too.🙄
Man, my parents rented a "Model Y equivalent" (lol), Genesis GV80, to come visit us this last week. From DEN to FoCo, then we went up and over, through Black Hawk, to Manitou and back. We were actually very impressed (for a Genesis).
They got here with over 85%, we topped up, charged a little j1772 in Lyons (maybe 8%, over breakfast) then only tried a chargepoint DCFC in Manitou before heading back. The chargepoint DCFC was embarrassing. 42kW... so we only added about 10% to CYA. Overall, we practically went from FoCo-Manitou and back on one charge.
It was actually really cool to charge off the Solar Roof at home, since we normally only charge the Leaf. I'd only used it at 3.3kW until they visited, and then we charged at 9.4kW using the GV80. I guess the main takeaway was that Chargepoint is only barely better than AC we've got at home.
IDK if my Mom could comprehend the lost opportunity of not getting a Tesla rental, but maybe next time she will.
If you want to see another Trinium install come to the UK and see the shell recharge network. Been using it and it seems to be way more reliable than the stuff you guys have for public charging networks.
I would prefer lower charging speed for day parking spots downtown.
Going to New York on holiday soon, had never heard of Revel, so will be using their service when there. Great informative video again Kyle.
We need this service in Fl all of major cities
I just shake my head at this stuff. I live in a state that has adopted California's Advanced Clean Cars II regulations -- you know, all new cars in 2035 must be zero emission, or "battery electric" given today's woeful "technology." And don't forget -- that regulation starts in TWO YEARS, with 35% of new cars being required to be zero emissions in 2026. And going up 8% every year from that, until it reaches 100% in 2035. BELIEVE IT OR NOT, KYLE, somewhere probably closer to HALF THE POPULATION IN THIS COUNTRY rents or lives in housing where THEY CANNOT CHARGE A BATTERY ELECTRIC VEHICLE AT HOME. So, HOW ON EARTH do you expect a jump from somewhere around 5% of vehicles today, all the way to 35% or 100% in the future is going to work, when somewhere around HALF OF THESE VEHICLES will need to sit for an hour at a public charging station, in order to charge up to 100%? And yes, if you're going to waste so much time "filling your vehicle with energy," you ARE going to charge it up to 100%, and everyone else in line can FREAKING SIT THERE AND WAIT. People will go shopping, go to lunch -- whatever -- and keep an eye on when any idle charges might kick in.
We have busy gasoline stations -- the busiest in my area being Costco stations -- that fuel somewhere around 500 to 600 vehicles per hour. All the way up to "100%," which works out to be around 400 to 600 miles of range, depending upon vehicles. So, what does it take to charge up 500 battery electric vehicles to 100%? AN ENTIRE WALMART PARKING LOT! Or thereabouts. So, every time you visit a charging station in a Walmart or other large parking lot, you NEED to be thinking about how that will eventually have to be a place where EVERY parking spot also needs to be a "public charging spot." Putting your little parking garage to absolute shame. If we don't build public charging stations in that kind of quantity, you WILL be sitting in line for hours, waiting to get to a charger. So get ready.
If and when you start looking into the future of "battery electric vehicles forced upon renters who cannot charge them at home," then I'll start watching your videos again. I just roll my eyes at stuff like videos with a few dozen Teslas crammed into a parking structure.
I think you should do a video on the big minus to get the minerals to make the batteries and what’s that’s doing the environment that would be an interesting video to see
He would never do that because making EV videos is his bread and butter. So what’s his incentive to show that evs don’t “save the world”
(Which they don’t.)
You could do the same for minerals used in your cell phone or gas car's catalytic converter. What does that specifically have to do with the end product? If you don't like it push for domestic mining and foreign import tariffs
Thank You for All that you are doing for our Planet Earth.... Peace.. Shalom.. Salam.. Namaste.. 🙏🏻 😊 🌈 ✌ ☮ ❤
Branden Flasch would lose his mind exploring these stations.
I didn't know about those charging in that area. If you talking about grid lock, that is cause you in Williamsburg, it use to be fine driving before DOT meddled with it and made it considerably worse. It is now pretty much the worse place to drive in the city now, and that not just for cars, if you are on a bike or a scooter it is just as bad. There are off streets in NYC where I don't even meet up with cars and try driving Time Square after 11pm on weekday, it is like in a ghost town.
If you are in Gowanus, I there was (or is) charging at the Whole Foods and it has a cool roof garden. And I heard Koppal Ford in Queens installed something, and there use to be one independent one on Queens Blvd (Highway 25) at the Zombie Carwash, but since they closed the fast charger looks blocked off. It is kind of a patchwork if you don't charge at home.
AC charge Vandalism is a real concern. Need protections.
suprisingly trinium is the most unreliable charger here in australia. funded by government to install but the network always breakdown easily and takes months to repair as they wait for parts to come through. Seriously I’m not kidding. You’d have this happines when you come to the trinium and it’s working haha..
Was this a Sunday or holiday when you visited? If not, that is a lot of capital sitting on their lot, not making money. They would need most of those vehicles on the road most of the time to make any money.

Does anyone know if Tesla to CCS adaptors will be available beginning 2024 from someone? Beginning in 2024 will Tesla allow non-Tesla EVs charge at their superchargers with an adaptor.? Anyone know if Tesla going to accelerate the Magic dock installation at supercharger stations? There are so many unanswered questions that no one talks about. I own an Bolt EV and can't make plans because all the companies don't give timelines to what is going to happen and when. So tired of the lack of information and the lying.
All locations like this should have attendance workers who pay attention and FORCE vehicles to vacate when they reach 80-90%
Workers are expensive. But I would agree with a max of 80% when station is busy and / or a higher price when over 80%. This should be done via software. And we of course need idle fees like Tesla does it.

What use do we have from it being cool when they charge more than half the price it would cost to fill a gas tank. Kinda defeats the purpose of owning an EV. I have chargepoint close to my house and they charge 10 bucks an hour. I uaually charge from 10%-80% for 10 bucks canadian. Thats like $7 usd

Yes, good ideas re: charging hub in the city. No, shitty hardware. Unsurprisingly unreliable, and not unexpected when the non-Tesla rapid charging data reflects same. They have much work to do to catch up and they never will.
Not understanding why this is called ridesharing. As a former rideshare driver, and current Insurance Broker who writes Rideshare endorsements, Revel to me is a Taxi company, as the drivers don’t own the cars they drive, and thus aren’t sharing their own cars. They are employees of a Taxi company that happens to use EVs.
"It's a great experience when it works." 50 cents for 75kW that isn't reliable. Once manufacturers change over to nacs, these charger companies are going to drop like flies.

I don't understand why they made this setup. All they had to do install a load of AC chargers to hook up all the cars that parked in the garage. Now with the fast chargers they need people to drive the cars back and forth between the parking spots and the fast chargers. Maybe add two fast charging stalls for people that are in a hurry to charge. What they have now is a very expensive setup and it requires additional manpower. And then there is a guy handing out tickets for people that want to charge. That should be easy to automate.
Thanks for the info. I'm confused, I have a 2020 M3, not CCS enabled, Can I still use the Tesla plug at the Revel station?
Kyle we need content of you ripping around in Revel’s THIRD business in Brooklyn: the dockless rentable moped e-scooters!
I wonder how much power they lose with inefficiencies with CCS to NACs adapting
Almost none. The only loss is voltage drop through the adapter, which I imagine is a fraction of a volt. The adapting is more about the communication protocol.
Maybe it’s new technology but I am under the impression that dc voltage conversion is dc to AC to dc. Where AC to dc is direct. On the other hand if you have enough difference in rates at times batteries could make fiscal sense just not as efficient
As they do not allow natural gas or propane vehicles in garages/parkades, I am surprised they would allow a fleet of EV’s in one.
it really seems weird they dont have any AC charging!
i suspect charging at 50kW doesn't require any additional battery cooling. So you save on energy charging slower
If they charge to 100% all the time the battery won't last. Tesla use to recommend 80% but now that they've gotten so much data the new number is 90%
These are not a public chargers. These are chargers blocked by revel paid by tax dollars. Companies like that and carsharing companies are a pain in the butt.
Aaawww this is so cool!! All the blue 💙😂and wow one CHAdeMO 😉
