Super entertaining job going over this expanded best-of! The original 10+ as voted by pcenginefx forumgoers is definitely surprising in what's omitted, absolutely would have expected to see R-Type and Soldier Blade make the cut in a popularity contest held by TG16/PCE diehards. My first thought when you were hinting at a Taito-developed, also-on-Genesis arcade port was Chase HQ, and I was like, "No. No, there's no way." Haha, breathed a little sigh of relief when it turned out to be Cadash. Your "next 9" is good stuff, all worthy contenders. I'd personally sub in World Court Tennis & Veigues Tactical Gladiator for World Class Baseball & Turrican, but it's great to see those two get some love. Anyhow, awesome video, both for its thoughtful content and superior cinematography!
Love that you included Cadash in your list. I just played through that on TGFX my first time last year, and really enjoyed it. Went full-belmont style with the priest. Hadn't played the game on any platform before then, besides maybe in MAME briefly. Legendary axe is another favorite. I had never made it past the stage 3 boss until a month or two ago. friggin brutal. New Adventure Island is one of my personal top 10 for the system also. Way better than any bonk game I've played. If you plug in a 6 button controller while New Adventure Island is on, it will level skip you until you unplug it, helping you get back to where you were, or if you want to practice the later stages, etc. Almost like a code in itself just plugging in a darn 6-button controller, lol. Hilarious how they ripped off the beatles "Back in the USSR" for the water/island stages ^ - ^ Completely agree with galaga 88 being a top game on the system. its just so well made- looks great and a joy to play. Haven't tried Turrican for TGFX yet. Definitely gonna give that a try. Great video.
Definitely interested in seeing more of this type of video. It does a good job of moving beyond the games everyone already knows to highlight stuff that doesn't get discussed as often. In the age of emulation I find this extremely helpful to guide me towards games I might not be familiar with. Also, the video quality really is top-notch here.
Great point regarding the top 10 discussion. You're absolutely correct, usually I see only about 30-40 of the same games on most top 10 lists. Anyway, I personally am not overly knowledgeable about the TG16 as there's only so much time & money I can devote to something, and of course the PSone wins out my time & money. I got most of my PSone collection towards the end of the PS2's lifetime where most games were on heavy clearance @ GameStop with average prices of $0.25 - $5 on the high end. On top of that, vendors on eBay with huge stock of new/sealed PSone games were trying to clear out their wearhouses would sell most games for $0.01 with shipping being $5 - $6. So after 25 years of collecting for the PSone I've acquired 868 CIB titles & 200+ disc only. I absolutely love the PSone & I love this channel!
I think this was a really awesome idea Chris! I'd love to see lists like this for the Genesis, Ps1 and Saturn! Really enjoyed this video a lot!!! Keep up the awesome work as always
Chris, another excellent video. At first the title confused me as to as why this was on CGQ+ as I thought maybe it was in line to one of your launch or similar year in certain system, however a few minutes later it was more like a cousin to Flashback but maybe more focused. To answer your question, yes this was awesome and I would love to see more similar to this! It seems like a lot of TG16/PCE content is out now-maybe due to the minis, idk I find myself playing these games way more, maybe because it was not one of main systems that we played when we were younger (we did & I believe I had a TG16-but not many games and ultimately I don’t remember what happened to it, maybe one if my friends had it (it’s all fuzzy at this point). Sorry just went on a tangent-Thanks for keeping me occupied during this time-I always look forward to your content!
Yes. Great idea for a video. Too many top 10s are similar for the reasons you mentioned and I find personal top 10's much more enjoyable. Please do more.
your comment on R-Type bieng a 'bunch of moments' reminded me of the way i think of Thunderforce III on Megadrive/Genesis a learning process..can be applied to lots of (mainly) horizontal shooters I feel. great idea btw hope this format continues
This is a great idea for a video, the next 10 is where the interesting stuff comes out. I remember reading EGM or Gamepro when TurboGrafx was trying to compete with a late-in-life NES still. They were basically giving away the console and it came with a huge bundle of games. I really wish that I could have experienced the console as a kid so that I could have real nostalgia for it.
There is a really cool remake/reimagining of Devil's Crush on Xbox called "Demon's Tilt". It only has one table, and I wouldn't pay more than about $5 for it, but on sale it's definitely worth a play! (My kid loves it!)
Great idea for a video. This is especially interesting for someone who never owned a TurboGrafx like myself. Would love to see this for other systems as well.
i was gonna say this video looked crisp, saw your description above, right on, i have good memories for the turbo grafx, my neighbor had it and he had an NES so we'd play one and maybe then want to play the other, lots of laughs over games like jj and jeff and dungeon explorer, never got past the first boss in dungeon explorer, alright thanks for posting cya
Totally agree about both World Class Baseball and older baseball games in general. I could easily lose an afternoon with any of the Bases Loaded titles on NES. Ken Griffey Jr.? Not so much. Definitely think this was a good idea, at any rate, and would be interested to hear your lists and opinions for other systems.
Kickass Chris. You and BitHead are right on the money, Top Ten Lists are boring because they need to be reflection of the collective conscious of all the fans (lest you get backlash). The Next 10 is like a loop hole, that lets us hear more personal opinions without the baggage of representing the "objectively best" games. You know whats funny, a huge chunk of people probably base their Top Tens off of other peoples' list (instead of actually playing all the games themselves). It becomes cyclical, and like you said, boring
I love how much you get wound up by people comparing games that are kind of not comparable 😂 Just something about that tickles me. I did get tempted to compare rampage with madden 93 just to rattle your cage but then I remembered I’m 46 😂👍

I never really played most of the games until 2016 when I got into modding. I absolutely love Hudson! Im big into Shooters and love all the Japanese Titles that were on the PC Engine! Unreal! I look forward to getting a mod where I can have all the CD Rom Shooters! There are some amazing titles and the sound on the CD System is Great! I just wonder why the Japanese never ported the better games over to the US? It would have made the TG16 a better choice back in the day, this system blew the NES away....great video (love your cab in the background)
Speaking on Neutopia your insight is that of someone who played it after 2000. I had a nes and a turbo grafix 16 as a child when it was out on release. I never once as a 9 yr old said that Neutopia is just like Zelda. If i remember Zelda 2 came out a few years before Neutopia( i could be wrong). Zelda 1 was old by that time and back then when a new game came out the 1 before it became old fast. Long story short Neutopia was its own thing .
Loved the video! This is a great idea and I would love to see more. It’s sad about pcenginefx. I wouldn’t post much but I would check in monthly. I was sad to see them close and I missed posting to the forums by one day. It will be missed.
The 1989 game of the year(Legendary Axe) should have definitely been included in the top 10 so I’m glad you placed it in your next 10. Games like splatterhouse or air zonk are really good, but are still overrated
Agree for Splatterhouse; disagree with Air Zonk. The latter game is really good both artistically and in regards to the chiptune ost & gameplay. In merely artistic/stylistic terms, Splatterhouse is actually not half bad.
Great episode! I like your take on the top 10 thing, and long-form helps flesh out the reason behind the number more than just blasting off with 10 titles and calling it a wrap. Love the idea here. Quick question: did you use actual TGFX hardware to record the video footage in this episode? Saw something I wanted to compare to the MiSTer core, but wanted to be sure first. Thanks!
Thanks! Unfortunately, it depends. Some of the footage I've had for a while and was recorded on original hardware, while footage for other games was recorded using the MiSTer. If you tell me which games in particular you're interested in, I can tell you how it was recorded.
@@CGQPlus Devil's Crush. You happened to capture exactly something i've been looking at for the past couple weeks and trying to determine if is authentic on real hardware.
@@CGQPlus thank you! that is exactly what I was hoping you would say. The MiSTer core actually is emulating those imperfections accurately then. (judder when the full table scrolls, when hitting the three small red pentagrams at the bottom that teleport you to the top)
Good list! Loved World Class Baseball! My brother and I played the heck out of it. One game that never makes any of these best lists is Parasol Stars. An awesome game by Working Designs.
Always wanted to try this system as a kid it looked cool in the CVG import shop ads. Thanks for the recommendations will enjoy trying these out on the PC Engine mini.
Great video Chris. I loved the part about trading the Jag for the TG16. Don got all of my TG16 stuff before he passed but Im not without a means to play. I have since gotten a DuoRX and a TED. Now Im patiently waiting for the Mini to come from Amazon. My all time favorite game is Military Madness. I know there are objectively better games like ones on CD and the 'soldier' series of shmups but there is something about MM that keeps me coming back no matter how many times I've beaten it.
Did you ever meet the friend of Don's that I was talking about? William? He also lived around here, and had the same condition as Don. And yeah, MM is an awesome game.
I like this kind of top 10 better than the definitive top 10 best games. As far as baseball games go, I played the HELL out of Real Sports Baseball on the Atari 2600 and Bases Loaded 1. Those were pretty great.
My top 11 as a person who owned and played the turbo in 89 would be not in any order and only out of games i played back then Bonk 1 & 2, Devils crush & alien , Legendary axe 1& 2, Splatterhouse, Cadash, Victory run , Vigilante, Neutopia 1 & 2 , Ninja Scroll, Tiger Road, Galaga 90 People ignored the turbo back then kids at school only talked about nintendo and gameboy at first. The it was the Genesis and super nintendo ..hahah those were the days
Chris, I just can't believe you don't have some reverence for World Series Baseball. It was the best baseball game ever made when it came out and a huge critical success, as I recall, although my memory is quite foggy. Had you already moved to PC gaming by the time WSB came out? Sorry for the off-topic comment.
I have to ask, any plans for more of these "The next 10" videos for other consoles? I really enjoy these, I've watched this one and the Genesis one multiple times.
I can give you some criticism to level at Blazing Lazers. Some levels go on way too long. The music also takes a bit of a hit here and there. Soldier Blade is a much better game overall, and way more consistent in terms of level length and music. I get why people love Blazing Lazers but I’m in complete agreement that it doesn’t belong in the top 10.
I’m glad to see people checking out Bithead1000! Of all people, I heard from The Happy Console Gamer. I like how he keeps everything in, even if his idea goes disastrous. Granted he occasionally speeds up footage or jump cuts to save time. He could even not talk about games and just tell pointless stories. But the way he tells them, he keeps us entertained. When I have my tv playing through the stereo, he makes my dog jump when Bithead has a yelling outburst! Lol It’s like hanging out and having a sipa quauffy! Check him out if y’all haven’t already! It really IS “the best video game channel in human civilization “. Does anyone know where the “4K face” tagline come from?
This got me excited to blow the dust off my TG16. Thanks!... honestly though I prefer to TG16 game on my emulation setup. I don't like my TG16 controller and the rgb output has big nasty jailbars.
People love Ninja Spirit, and I just can't get into that game. The jumping is so floaty and imprecise. The Legendary Axe is kinda the opposite, it feels stiff and the hit boxes are weird. Dunno if I'd put either in my top 10

Devil's Crush was recorded using a Core Grafx with a Super SD System 3 hooked up to it. Upscaled through an OSSC.
@@CGQPlus thank you! that is exactly what I was hoping you would say. The MiSTer core actually is emulating those imperfections accurately then. (judder when the full table scrolls, when hitting the three small red pentagrams at the bottom that teleport you to the top)
This was great fun to watch. Thanks Chris!
My top 11 as a person who owned and played the turbo in 89 would be not in any order and only out of games i played back then
Bonk 1 & 2, Devils crush & alien , Legendary axe 1& 2, Splatterhouse, Cadash, Victory run , Vigilante, Neutopia 1 & 2 , Ninja Scroll, Tiger Road, Galaga 90
People ignored the turbo back then kids at school only talked about nintendo and gameboy at first. The it was the Genesis and super nintendo ..hahah those were the days
Awesome show Chris! Thank You!
Just added some of those games on my Pi to check out.
id like to see a CD game version of this same thing.
CGQ+ !!!
Thanks dude!
I never got to play World Series Baseball back in the day. By 1994 I was primarily playing PC games, yes. I should sit down and give the game a go.
World Series Baseball 2 for the saturn is very good. The menu music is very catchy.
I'd love to see more SNES vids like this.
I beat dungeon explorer with 4 friends and it was a blast. Cant recomend it enough.
Very cool video. This would work well not only for consoles but also for game genres.
I liked this...would love to see more!
I have to ask, any plans for more of these "The next 10" videos for other consoles? I really enjoy these, I've watched this one and the Genesis one multiple times.
I'm definitely open to it. I feel like the NES would be fun to do.
Thanks for the nice video. Take care and stay safe.
Hold on, this means no Parasol Stars in the top 20?! I'm outraged! (well I'm not really, but you know...)
Loved this video! Great work!
Great idea. Please do this for the other systems.
Galaga 90 is so good. It's one game I kept all these years after I also did a big sell off back in 2007ish.
awesome video, I dunno how I missed this
I got Soldier Blade when the Wii Virtual Console shop was shutting down. I can't get past the level 2 miniboss. I immediately lose all my lives.
Love your videos dude

Married with Children Studio Audience: “Wooooooo!!!!!!”
I think chew man fu might be the best honestly...so addictive
I remember playing bonk and splatterhouse on the turbo graphic 16 my cousin own one
Nice list. Enjoyed the video.
Woah how do you not have 50k subs
They're all over on the other channel, I guess.
He started saying that after he got a new camera, which I assume is 4K-capable.
CGQ+ gotcha
I wondered why I wasn’t getting updates. Apparently I forgot to subscribe.🤦🏻♂️
Damnit, Chad.
CGQ+ it’s all good, I subscribed before the comment!😂
Man the guy with the Jaguar got screwed.
This got me excited to blow the dust off my TG16. Thanks!... honestly though I prefer to TG16 game on my emulation setup. I don't like my TG16 controller and the rgb output has big nasty jailbars.
Love the idea. Some really great games.
Maybe I'm just a sheep but Zelda and Mariokart are my favorite Nintendo games on every console. I literally own them all
People love Ninja Spirit, and I just can't get into that game. The jumping is so floaty and imprecise.
The Legendary Axe is kinda the opposite, it feels stiff and the hit boxes are weird. Dunno if I'd put either in my top 10
awesome
Great video as always.
You had me at Bithead1000
Are you sure you didn't do a top 11 list like the Nostalgia Critic because you like to one step beyond?
