  • Coming up, an interview with the two principles from hard rock arena band Night Ranger. the band ruled 80s rock radio and here Professor of Rock interviews lead singer Jack Blades and drummer/singer Kelly Keagy as they shared the story behind one of the catchiest, raise your fist in the air, sing it to the top of your lungs rockers of 1984… the #1 classic Sister Christian. I don’t know if it’s illegal to turn the station when this song comes on the radio, but it should be. It all came from a misheard lyric. Drummer wrote it about his sister Christy and lead singer Jacke Blades misheard the lyric and begged him to change it to the lyric he misheard Sister Christian… Then the session was so rough the band had to play it over 100 times and drummer Kelly Keagy was so pissed he chucked the drumsticks at the producer. Well, this drummer actually ended up singing the song even though Jack Blades was the regular lead singer and it ended up being their biggest hit. The back story of what brought the character to life in this classic… it’s based on a real person. Next on Professor of Rock.

For any true blue child of the 80s, if I happen to say the word Motorin, You say… What’s your price for flight. …I’m of course talking about the Chorus of the all-time classic rock song Sister Christian from the one and only Night Ranger. This song was my go-to as a kid. Whenever it came on the radio it just put a quarter in me and I was banging my head, raising my fist singing. no Yelling the words full throttle. I’m a non-violent person, I’ don’t ever start fights… however, the only time I ever instigated a fight with my little brother. was over this song.
We were riding in the cab of my dad’s pick up and this song came blasting on the radio and my brother punched the little metal button in to change the station and I punched him in the throat and changed it back. I berated him. Screaming it’s against the law to change the station when Sister Christian is on. I was and still am completely serious. If you don’t like this song You hate babies and kittens and Happiness and joy. Because that’s what this song is… It’s pure and unadulterated joy. It’s the musical equivalent of Jolt Cola.
Night Ranger formed in San Francisco Their origin can be traced toRubicona pop/funk group led by Jerry Martini, who was once a part of Sly and the Family Stone. After Rubicon's demise in 1979, bassist Jack Blades put together a trio with Kelly Keagy and Brad Gillis.

Sister Christian was perhaps partially ruined for me due to a job I had at a grocery store. I never got tired of the song but it was on the rotation overhead and I would hear it 4x a day. It got so that a buddy of mine who I typically stocked shelves with made up store specific alternate lyrics. At the key moment when we were stocking together we would sing out loud, "Krogerin'!!!!! What's your price for rice?!?!?!?" and laugh. Hope all is well with you, Peter. LOL

I went to see "Rock of Ages" on Broadway, and in the balcony near us were the guys from Night Ranger. When they played "Sister Christian," Kelly sang along, and air drummed. At intermission, I crossed paths with Jack Blades and said, I told my wife you guys are Night Ranger and she thinks I am crazy. He reached out, shook my hand, and said, "I'm Jack Blades, and you can tell your wife you're not crazy." Excellent memory and a good guy. Evidently, a member of the stage band was a member of their touring band, and they came to see him. A great night in NYC.

Night Ranger and Tesla are the most underrated hard-rock bands of the 80s because they get pigeonholed as hair metal, and they just aren’t. Both bands have seriously talented performers and songwriters, and I still enjoy their music four decades later. Great stuff!

I will never forget my friends and I sitting around the television watching "Friday Night Videos"...NBC's response to MTV. Sister Christian was so huge at the time and just before the video played Night Ranger themselves appeared on the screen and dedicated the track to the graduating class of 1984...that was "OUR" class!!!!!!!! We were so pumped and the subject was the talk of the school that following Monday. It was a magical evening and yes we collectively sang the song at the top of our lungs in my parents living room as the video played. Great memories, great band and most importantly...a great song. Thank you Professor...for the chords and the truth.

Love your channel. I had the honor to work, live on air, in radio for over 20 years. I had an opportunity to meet some of my biggest heroes, hang out, build relationships and make some very dear friends. I would have worked my entire career for "free" if I could have had you as an on air partner. I truly dig your content, back stories, interviews...never boring and more often than not...very educational. The one downside of working in the only vocation I ever dreamt of doing, would be, being on the airwaves when one of "the legends" of the time passed away by one way or another. Being the number one afternoon drive jock in every market that I worked in meant this happened far too many times. I've always hated delivering bad news, but when it involves someone you knew and had genuine feelings for at a familial level....it is devastating. SRV, Cobain, Dimebag, Dave Williams, Chris Cornell, Layne Staley, Chester Bennington, Scott Wieland, Vinnie Paul, Kevin Dubrow, Frankie Banali...so many more...but none like the gut shot that came October 6th 2020 when we lost EVH. I don't care about the gossip and all the stories of difficulty, vanity, control freak...he treated me like family.

My biggest memory of Night Ranger was when they came to Des Moines, Iowa about 1995 and played in this little dive bar called the Runway which ironically was close to the DSM airport hence the name. They were touring just coming off the release of their Feeding off the Mojo album and the band only consisted of Kelly Keagy, Brad Gillis, and Gary Moon, a former member of Three Dog Night. I showed up to the bar a few hours before the show and there was no one there. Took my seat in this little cocktail table front and center and a few minutes later Brad came out and starting warming up and doing a sound check. It was just me and him and I was like this is so cool. He left and some time later while we were waiting for the band to take the stage the bar owner told me her husband was on his way back from picking up the band and would be back any minute if I wanted to go outside and meet them. So I went outside all by myself and their tour bus was in the parking lot. This limo rolls up to the bus and the band gets out and starts to step onto the bus to get ready for the show and I get the courage to ask for an autograph on my LP copy of Seven Wishes. What happened next I will never forget. They invited me on to the bus and it was just the four of us. Brad sat down at this little table and looked at my album and signed it while Kelly was getting some chips out of the cupboard. Kelly and Gary then signed my album, we have a short conversation, and they shook my hand and said time for us to get ready for the show. I was in heaven! I went back in to the bar and sat back down in front and the guys were right there playing only feet away. What a great night! A few years later I took that same album to one of their concerts after they original band had gotten back together and was hoping to get an autograph from Jack but couldn't get close enough because security was so tight. I did run into Brad at the fence and he signed it again on the back side while laughing..."kid, I already signed this!" That was a memory I will never forget. It was really special because I'm a drummer and meeting Kelly and the band like that was special. I still have that signed LP somewhere. Maybe someday I can get the rest of the band to sign it 🙂

i grew up in the bay area; during my high school years, the San Jose FM stations played their songs since the very beginning of the band. The stations KSJO and KOME in particular, were a big part of the band's success. Fun fact: their tour bus used to park in a lot that was visible from highway 280; it had a mural of Dawn Patrol on the side of it...pretty obvious whose bus it was. Also, there was a big cruising scene on El Camino every weekend and there was a young lady who had a dark blue Ford Ranger; she had modified the logo on the side of the pickup to say "Night Ranger" in an obvious nod to the band. This video brought back several memories. Night Ranger is one of the great bands from the Bay Area.

I remember I was in 7th grade, and ‘Dawn Patrol’ had just come out. It absolutely resonated with me. ‘Don’t Tell Me’ was so huge for me. ‘Sing Me Away,’ obviously, but that whole album is still seared into my head. ‘Sister Christian,’ while obviously a huge hit, wasn’t MY favorite Night Ranger song. I put up with it, because it meant the band was getting the exposure they needed, and I was happy for them. I’ve seen them several times, each time just rocked. What a PHENOMENAL live band. First time was on the ‘Midnight Madness’ tour at the Arlington Theatre in Santa Barbara, CA. From my understanding, Ratt was supposed to open up for them, but their album was blowing up & they apparently thought they shouldn’t be opening for anyone anymore, so they backed out & management had to find a replacement really quick. Night Ranger absolutely rocked the house, and to this day is one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. The energy on display for “(You Can Still) Rock in America” was off the chain, everybody (but Keaggy & Fitz🤣) running all over the place…insane. Thanks for this interview, so great to see the guys. 🙌🏼

Lol! I knew some of the story of this song back when it came out. Just the part about it being about a band member's sister. My oldest brother was very protective of his sisters ( I had 5 siblings; two brothers and three sisters) and I absolutely recognized the brother love in this song😊 He's still firey where his siblings are concerned, but then, we all are!

I can't imagine this song being called 'Sister Christie'. Like he said, 'Sister Christian' evokes a certain imagery, an image of reverence and innocence.

Thanks so much for doing a video on Night Ranger. They have been one of my lifelong favorites, and such a great, overlooked band. So many of their songs are ones that I can listen to on endless repeat, even today. So much love POR! Sing Me Away is SO great, too - so thankful for the little blurb on it at the end. 7 Wishes was one of the albums that I listened to non-stop as a kid...so many GREAT memories.

Kelly sang 4 songs on Dawn Patrol. So him singing a song that he wrote is not too surprising.

A secret I've never told anybody... this song is only slightly better than /meh to me. I don't dislike it... I just have no problem changing the channel if it's on. I know that a lot of people love this song. I remember back when it came out people I know really loved it... I just didn't get the love for the song... but that's OK, I don't have to like every song that's popular. I'll certainly agree that this song is a classic, though, based on the love that I've seen for the song.
