i really liked how you did the explanation in the beginning and showed exactly what was used and how it was rigged then showed it with a video after showing how to work it. that really helps me out understand better. Thanks a mil. John
I don't do it from my kayak because it would require too much paddling back into the current for each drift. Many things that gamefish eat don't have a lot of action - they just glide along.
This is the video that changed me as a surf fisherman. It completely changed the way I think about and approach throwing a bucktail, or any lure really. Thank you mr. skinner.
I read your book years ago without a boat and have used many of your techniques from the surf, yetties, and banks. Now with a boat, I always have a rod with a bucktail and have caught king mackerel, cobia, dolphinfish, grouper, snapper but either on shallow bottom water or on the surface. Have tried bigger heavier bucktails but nothing compares to those 1/2 to 1 1/2 oz smaller profile ones. Read your book again for a refresher and remembered this technique. Very eager to try this on SE Florida!
Thank you John for the video. I went flounder fishing yesterday and a was casting for bass using this technique and I caught my first bas weighing 20 pounds.
I love your videos! I look up to you as a fisherman your videos taught me ALOT! THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR KNOWLEDGE! Also I love seeing your videos with your DAUGHTER AND FATHER! I been trying to teach my 9 & 13 year old sons how to fish! I wish you were a guide or chartered a boat because I would love to fish with you!!! Also you are a very well known name from Holbrook to Montauk. I think if you were a guide or chartered you make a lot of money from the people who love you! BEST OF LUCK WITH YOUR FATHER AND GOOD LUCK TO YOUR DAUGHTER IN COLLEGE & THE REST OF YOUR FAMILY!!!! Best to you & family! Keep up the great work & thanks!
you are why UA-cam is great: knowledge, consistency, great content. I love your videos and have watched MANY of them. I've also read your books. I found your books via our UA-cam channel...well done!
Another great video John. Your videos & book have given me the knowledge & confidence in bucktails & that I needed to start fishing them more seriously & frequently. Keep up the good work.
@DancingforDollarsX I use 50# braid for the main line. Given the overhand knot in the 50# mono sinker dropper, it will break before the main line. 15# would break too easily and I'd lose too much lead.
Heavy jigs have been around awhile, and they've never caught on as a replacement for the 3-way. This fishing is often over rocky structure, and you'd be more prone to snagging with that big pricey bucktail instead of the sinker which is the most common loss on a 3-way snag. Also, the heavy jig wouldn't have the movement in the current that the light jig on the 5-foot horizontal leader does.
I'm in Southern California and I can't wait to use a lighter version of that rig from kayak in our reservoirs. Thanks a bunch "DUDE!" Love your videos. Makes me wanna move up there just for the stripers.
I describe a season of fishing, mostly surf, from the first signs of life in the spring until the snow flies. Stripers, blues, fluke... with techniques and strategies for catching integrated into every chapter, but reads like a story book rather than a how-to.
Awesome!!! I definitely have to try this out! Is there a way to use this while surf fishing? Like can you cast it out and reel it in so the bucktail is off the bottom?
@PaintballOO7 This is mostly a boat technique. For bucktailing from shore, it's mostly a matter of using the right combination of bucktail weight, cast placement, and retrieve speed.
Going to give this a try downtown Jacksonville this weekend at night time. Very deep, fast, and lots of pilings. I bought your book, and your fish log software.
Trust me, a 4-ounce bucktail by itself would not stay near the bottom under the conditions we were fishing. The 3-way rig, with 10- to 20-ounce sinkers, is a standard rig in those waters, plum gut, The Fishers Island Race,...
@mg0275 Works anytime there are bass around. Works in inlets with significant current, so I guess it would depend on the features of your channels. There's one way to find out...
@pepefenito When you're on the charterboat, just follow the charter captain's advice. They're the experts in the places they fish. The tube would not cast well from a pier. I'm quite sure a bucktail tipped with a gulp eel would work.
Instead of the overhand knot I just use lower pound test line to my sinker for the same reason you described. If the sinker snags that will be all I'll lose on a break off.
Great video, but why are you using such a heavy sinker? I fish in those currents and water depth and get down to the bottom with a 4 oz bucktail by itself with no problem.
hey john thanks used ur bucktailing tips and had a very good weekend of fishing got a 37 pound bass and 3 over 15 on b tails and a limit of fluke on saturday one 7 and 1/2 pounds thanks for all tips i may go back on the boat for cod in january do buck tails work for cod
Hi John - have you ever used this technique with success from your kayak? Any idea as to why the bass would strike if very little action is imparted to the bucktail?
Question: I've never caught a bass before and so it will be my target this upcoming season. I will be most likely going on a boat for them (fishing charter) (since I don't own a boat), Will your technique work in that situation where I won't know whats under me but if theres fish i will catch them? And also on one of your other vids, you were tubing with Gulp worms. Would that work with cast and retrieve from like a pier?. And also , do gulp eels work if you hook them onto a bucktail on/off boat?
Hi John, great info. I lived out in Riverhead back in 1990-1994, now live near Norwalk CT fishing each weekend. did you work at Baiting Hollow Scout camp in the 80's? Looking forward to catching some stripers this Fall.
I enjoy watching your videos....... I am going Surf fishing next month on the Central Coast of California (I'm fishing Pismo Beach area). Would you try using a Bucktail? Thanks again for posting your videos.
are bucktails sill a good bait this time of year or what do u recommend for bait friday im going to groton ct. on the helcat fishing do u now any good spots to fish in groton
please give more details on rig creation and put link to items you speak about in the description of your video we would like to see more detail step by step and how and where to get the products with links thanks awesome videos
John skinner What’s the point of the sinker weight on this rig, I’ve been using your style of hi-Lo Spro vertical Bucktail with a teaser for Fluke very successfully, and now want to try for strippers I like this idea because it’s a style of fishing I understand. But I don’t understand why your using a sinker with a bucktail... or I guess a better question is why not just use a hi-lo rig?
Just a random comment but I think if you would put together a "blooper/fail" video of some or a couple of your experiences, it would be rather funny and entertaining I'm not sure why just a random thought like I said lol....
Well, I could not make it produce in the deep water. Either they did not want it, or they were not there. I need to make a trip up north and catch some stripers, I don't think this place is that great for stripers.
Ah the good old days ! Love all your videos but the old ones I feel was a simpler time.

just bought your book john and i must say my success and confidence in my bucktailing is boosted by a ton!

Glad you found the book helpful. Thanks.
Awesome!!! I definitely have to try this out! Is there a way to use this while surf fishing? Like can you cast it out and reel it in so the bucktail is off the bottom?
Always a great professionally done video. It was very educational, like always. It had great pointers on how not to loose your complete rig....

No, because it's typically used with a pretty fast drift, like 2+ mph. You'd end up doing a lot of paddling (or peddling).
Does not get tangled. The sinkers are in the 10- to 16-ounce range - much heavier than bucktails. No bouncing.
@mg0275
Works anytime there are bass around. Works in inlets with significant current, so I guess it would depend on the features of your channels. There's one way to find out...
It's typically done in at least 20 feet, but usually 30-60.
They're catching a lot of fish this way through the summer in Plum Gut and The Fisher's Island Race. I don't know much about Groton specifically.
The 6.5-foot ugly-stik rated 20-50# line is the rod I was using with a Penn jigmaster reel.
@pepefenito

Did not work at the camp. Glad you liked the vid.
I would stick to pork rind for this kind of fishing. 1 to 1.5 ounce bucktails work well for 3-way rigging, as long as they have a sturdy hook.
great videos!!! an under water video of striped bass like the one you did of fluke would be awesome as well!!!
I've never called me a giant striped bass like you do but I will try your method thank you John Skinner
Yes.
Dude I love your videos...will be buying your book

yes - 45 feet
Hi John, great info. I lived out in Riverhead back in 1990-1994, now live near Norwalk CT fishing each weekend.
did you work at Baiting Hollow Scout camp in the 80's?
Looking forward to catching some stripers this Fall.
Do you think you will catch stripers if you replace the buck tail in this rig with a slug- go or hogy eel and fish it the same way?
Does the direction of the 3 way swivel matter? Mine ALWAYS tangle. I dont get it. Even the pre tied rigs tangle.
Great video, I've been out in eastern LI sound many times with not a single striped bass. I think they are like unicorns and the yeti.
John;
You have got it down on your videos. Is that Long Is. Sound? How deep?
I enjoy watching your videos....... I am going Surf fishing next month on the Central Coast of California (I'm fishing Pismo Beach area). Would you try using a Bucktail? Thanks again for posting your videos.

john i fish mostly from my boat , do you have videos on striper rigging and how to find them ? im in nj near the great egg river.
Purely structure.
thanks for the info have u ever used the t turn swivels by thundermist ?
John, is there a minimum water depth needed for this technique or is it all about current speed?
please give more details on rig creation and put link to items you speak about in the description of your video we would like to see more detail step by step and how and where to get the products with links thanks awesome videos
hey john what size ugly stick is that hard to see in the video

This is heavy current and 50' of water. Frequently 2- to 4knt current. You need 10-16 ounces to stay down.
John is using a 3 way rig in fall for stripers with a cannon ball sinker as opposed to just the bucktail only is what?
If I understood your question, the extra weight is needed because of current and depth. Otherwise you'd need a very heavy bucktail.
what are they catching stripers on now? what lures
Super great job but wow very fast hooksets
Have you used this technique from a kayak?
Is this an effective winter/cold water technique?
No.
6.5 feet - rated 20-50# line
John Skinner Fishing
What rod is suitable for this setup with these heavier weights on them?
Very informative
Bucktails and eels
Do I wait for bucktail to hit sand or the sinker?
Yes. Hit bottom, reel up a couple of cranks.
Hey John, what reel is that on the ugly stick? The red one.
Penn jigmaster 500
John Skinner Fishing in place of the bucktail do you think it would be a good idea to use live bait or cut bait
Great video!
Could you fish suspended for stripers?
what is ur book a season on the edge about
what # braided line do you recommend in the race?
ugly stick 6.6 feet rated 20-50# line, penn jigmaster, that's a good capable and reasonably-priced outfit.
Was this off long island?
A bucktail should work on any fish that will strike an artificial.
Is the boat just drifting?
yes
is that a classic penn Squider?
jigmaster
@@JohnSkinnerFishing awesome. I stick with the classics. Thank you for your videos and all that editing. Much appreciated.
Ok thanks for the help
Why sinker line should be shorter than hook line?
It's just to add weight, and you don't want it dragging bottom.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing yes I understand, but why hook line is longer than sinker line. Why not vice-versa?
John do you ever troll using this method?
no
ok thanks ill have to see about it
no
Very Good John ;)
Do you keep any bass?
50
In the sound?
Amazing! Ugly Stick too! Amazing!!
Surf Stripers> boat stripers
still great video 👍👍
My largest striper was 57 inches 60 pounds.
scared the crap out of me @ 8:53
go skinner's. thank for the tip.
looks sort of like A drop shot rig.
Would you try this from a kayak?
Yes!
greenmtnman I'm looking to do this from mine.
Just a random comment but I think if you would put together a "blooper/fail" video of some or a couple of your experiences, it would be rather funny and entertaining I'm not sure why just a random thought like I said lol....

Striped bass in florida are rare and usually found in/around freshwater. A good portion of their "stripers" are hybrids stocked by the state.
i want a "John Skinner" t-shirt!
haha I know exactly wheres he's fishing! Fish here often...
ok thanks
