I only used the ink chamber, spring & thrust device. I kept the spring in it's original size & position but put the thrust device on top as the ammo. I then pushed it back & let it go.

You can do this with a mechanical pencil
Wont be that powerful but can be entertaining
So take the front off [the tip where the lead comes out] then put it back on to where its on there but dosent click in place, then pressing on the pencil (the button to make the lead come out) acts as a trigger.

Break off the bottom of a pen, attach a rubber band to the side and shoot the pen out of the broken end. You can propably find a video on it
