Sifting through my compost right now. The things that I find that I most dislike: Jiffy pod nets, stickers on veggies/fruits, and egg shells. The entire compost bin can be almost totally decomposed to where everything looks the same, but these 3 things!
Wooo! I'm already doing most of these (everything except the bucket method). Good to know I'm on the right track. The ziploc bag method is what I use. The seeds love the top of my computer tower; it's the perfect temp.
I use a surface thermometer to measure the top of the soil before I plant and sow the seeds on the soil that matches their particular temp needed. I periodically allow a low humidity for a sort while to harden the outside skin of the seedlings to prevent opportunistic fungi . Plus store your soil with a few fresh slug pellets weeks before you use it. I use the box method already plus put a reminder on my iPhone to alert me.
I am literally going thru my seeds right now to start my winter sowing for cold stratification. Putting out probably 30-35 pots tonight and another 40+ this coming week.
i’m in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan this weekend for the battle of the prairies football 🏈 tournament. We are from parkland county, alberta. My son is on the golden bears selects u14 team. My thoughts…dang it is windy here. 😮 Just thought it was cool that i was in your home province❤ ✌🏼
Great video. Used the humidity domes this year with great results. Hardening off is always a difficult time for me. We have a few inexpensive greenhouses we might use this year to get our seed starts out with some shade cloth. Then we won’t have to bring them in and out of the house like we have done for the last four years. Thanks for the video.
More suggestions - Seeds with a hard shell can get a little help hatching by grinding them (just a little) with sandpaper. E.g. Mango seeds from supermarket mangos are usually too weak to break their shell. That shell can be taken off entirely. - When seeds are soaked, a little detergent in the water can lower the surface tension and make it easier to wet those floating seeds (with a hydrophobic shell) - Plastic wrap can be an easy substitute, if you don’t have enough domes. Just leave some air between the seeds and the wrap and maybe poke some holes in the wrap.
I had a little laugh when you mentioned putting a reminder to check your seedlings every 2 days. I’m one of those who look at them 3 or more times each day just to see how they’re growing.
I presprout most of my seeds on paper towels, but I often have a problem with the roots of some of the sprouted seeds growing into the paper. The kind of paper used for brown paper bags is more resistant to root penetration, but it dries out more quickly than paper towels. I wish I could find a "best of both worlds" material to use.
I got super excited for this and then remembered every single one of my garden beds is full of invasive gout weed and needs to be solarized this year... oh well! I'll try to remember this when I'm planting in late August
Awesome information. Thanks for clearing up the seed floating wives tale. Texting this video to myself because I will forget half of everything. It’s what happens with age. 😂😂
What are your thoughts on treating seeds with cold plasma for faster germination?.? I just watched a video about plasma treatment for faster plant growth and found it fascinating!
I would consider adding lime. If you are using it for initial germination just leave it. but if you intend to leave them in there for a bit I would balance everything
Great tips! I'll definitely be trying some of these out! Sigh. It always makes me feel like such a worthless pile of crap when these youtubers are like "I have a full-time job, a yt channel, AND do all of this other stuff." Lol. I wish I could do that. 😑 fibromyalgia in your 30s is soooooooo much fun. I feel like I accomplished something when I spent 4 hours cleaning out the basement and then didn't feel like I was gonna die.
Never beat yourself up! Three years ago I was depressed, incredibly unhealthy, my mom was suffering from addictions and waking up was a nightmare. I promise it is all temporary ❤️❤️❤️
@GardeningInCanada thanks. I needed that. It's been a rough year. But I'm on carnivore (after EXTENSIVE research into it) and it does seem to be helping. Maybe this year will be better. 🤞🤞 congratulations on clawing your way out of that chasm. It can be pretty dark down here. Hope your mom is doing better. 💕
Pregnancy rumors start spreading like a wildfire across the garden community.. Kidding. Prenatals are great for most women unless you have the MTHRFKR gene or a similar gene. Otherwise, good stuff!

Ugh those Jiffy pod nets are the WORST!

That's awesome! Winter sowing is the best.
@@GardeningInCanada I like that I can plant seeds and just do next to nothing for three to four months.
@@GardeningInCanadait never worked for me, Ontario Canada here, most of it rotted.
Great job!
I plan to put out containers in the next few days as well. It's my second time winter sowing, will try more varieties of plants this year.

Hahahah! Yeaaaaa when you hear my microphone sometimes you can hear the wind…. It’s like that here nonstop

I love the idea of using inexpensive greenhouses!

You can remove the casing before you plant them. It avoids any root strangulation. It's not ideal but it's better than not doing it
Yea that’s very true it comes off very easy
Yes, I do that too.

A durable, not dollar store coffee filter or if you can afford "Whatman" brand filter papers.
Thanks for the hacks. Can’t wait to start my seeds when I get back from my vacation. Cheers from Tulua, Colombia 🇨🇴
Nice!!! Have a nice vacay

Great video Thx! I was going to try and mix my own seedling compost this year using peat, should i worry about the PH?

My sister has MS and her specialist also said to take prenatals.
this video feels like a stretch as in there seems to be filler sentences, all these points could be told within 5 mins max
wait......are you pregnant?!?
I thought the same thing! Is that an announcement??
😂😂 nooo! I just take prenatal because my doctor said all women should be taking them at all times.

"xxxxxx hacks" are not a thing anymore. Need to find a new title to keep up with 2025
It is a thing in our country, perhaps not in yours.
