One of the things that's great about seeing a classic film like this is it enables you to recognize when later films are making reference to it, like in "Ghostbusters."
If you haven't seen it yet, a very old classic worth seeing is "The Wizard of Oz" (1939). It might not be that referenced anymore, but for decades it was highly referenced.

TRIVIA: "Father Dyer" and the President of the University are Actual Jesuit Priests! They were hired as local Consultants but were added in as Actors. Father O'Malley ("Father Dyer") still works in the area and loves to talk about his time in the movie.
Both Linda Blair and Ellen Burstyn suffered major Back Injuries that required years to heal while filming, in separate incidents (They had happened during Filming and the footage was actually kept in the film). Two Technicians were also hurt, one losing a finger and another a toe in other mishaps. Filming was also delayed because of a fire that Destroyed some sets... the only room untouched was Reagan's bedroom.
This movie was so realistic back then that People threw up in the theaters and some people believed they had become possessed by the movie.

Such a great movie, tension builds and builds with every scene, there's a quieter scene with the mother and doctors or the Father Karras then back to Regan who's possession is progressing with each scene. The subtle hints along the way, I love the scene where they discover she is talking backwards...and mentions Marin!

During the bed scene where she's being whipped back and forth they actually used the young actress for that stunt. It was like a harness attached to her that pulls her up and down, it jolted her so hard that she injured her back during the filming of the scene. She said to this day she has back issues because of it.
This is one of the scariest movies ever made, they made a terrifying movie that still holds up without using few special effects, no CGI and no use of booming loud noises full of bass randomly playing like modern movies need to get a scare out of people. It's all psychological and good film making techniques.

the thing about this movie is not the visual horror itself; it’s the fact that the movie toys with the characters while the audience knows exactly what’s happening
we know the girl’s possessed, but no one else does, so every time something happens, there’s a logical explanation behind it: she could be lying about the bed shaking, her levitating could be a convulsion, her mood change could be puberty…. all the while, we know what’s the real reason, but the audience doesn’t, and while it sucks out all the life and energy from the characters, but it keeps us at constant suspense

The 1970's was not exactly the Dark Ages in terms of medicine. Yet, the procedure she undergoes is a CT scan of that time; and yes, they were that noisy and physically intrusive in 1973. Technology has very much improved. Medical doctrine hasn't actually changed that much. A team of doctors today would also do everything to check out physical symptoms and causes first, use drug therapy to try to contain it (Ritalin and Thorazine are still used). Hypnotism, Psychiatry and other non-"mechanical" therapies might be more readily used today. Certainly those drugs might well be prescribed through a Psychiatrist.

I remember seeing it at a drive in theater-and making people around us decidedly uneasy, you see earlier that day I had read Mad Magazine's parody of it,and heartily laughing as I saw where the parody got its take on it-from that point of view I found it quite funny, but people around us, not having that perspective, being creeped out by the movie, and hearing me cracking up like it was comedy found it a bit unsettling kind of like "who could find this that funny"-aaahhh for the good old days...

a bit of background..... This movie was based on a novel by William Peter Blatty which was itself based on an actual exorcism of a 14 year old boy from Maryland which happened in St. Louis, Missouri in 1948. It took several weeks, the last few of which took place in the old Alexian Brothers hospital in south St. Louis, which as since been torn down. According to the priests journals, the events were similar to those in the movie but a bit toned down, no spinning heads or floating beds.
Also, the part of Father Dyer, the younger priest who gave last rites at the end, was played by Fr. William J. O'Malley, an actual Jesuit priest who was brought onto the film originally as a consultant, but then given a small part.
Father O'Malley, until his recent passing, taught at Fordham Prep School in the Bronx, NY.

The story is about Damian, and Father Marrin was the subplot. Damian losing and regaining his faith is his story arc. God used the girl as a vessel for Lucifer. Damian had to accept that the devil is real, help exorcise the devil, invite the devil into himself, then ultimately sacrifice himself to prove his faith. Father Marrin's faith never wavered, and God wanted him to go out fighting the devil himself, a true warrior for God.
Damian, Father Marrin & Reagan were all rewarded with special places in Heaven by God.
That's why the story is titled The Exorcist. The movie is about the girl, but the story is about Father Damian, The Exorcist.

The Exorcist is the creepiest movie of all time, and maybe The Omen (the original) is the second creepiest.
The young woman in the house, Sharon, is not an older sister, but a secretary for Chris McNeil.
The Ouija board is what summoned the demon to Regan. That house was rented by Chris McNeil while they were making that film, and I guess the Ouija board just happened to be in a closet.
The medical procedures were the latest for 1973, but the doctors were looking at the issue from a purely medical point of view.
The pendant is a St Joseph pendant.

Inna, I'm glad you got a chance to see this film, even if it was so unsettling for you. You have to think back to 1973 and realize that nothing like this had ever been shown to the people in theaters across the US. It was the very first of its kind. No one had any idea of what they were subjecting themselves to because prior "horror films" were showing Frankenstein's Monster, The Wolf Man, The Mummy, and Dracula. Watch one of those old films and you'll see that they were COMEDIES in comparison to The Exorcist. This film changed that forever. You're one of the most innocent reactors out there. I wish you well on your scary movie journey. Another First Of Its Kind film that is unsettling is "The Blair Witch Project". No "reality film" movie had ever been widely seen by the masses prior to its release, and it scared a LOT of people.

"The Exorcist" is the first installment of William Peter Blatty's, author of the novel and the screenplay, Faith Trilogy. He wrote it as an evangelization tool to show that if the spiritual personification of evil exists in the world in the form of fallen angels / demons, then supernatural goodness as God must exist even more so.
"The Ninth Configuration" from 1980, the second installment which he wrote and directed, while outwardly clothed as a farce, addresses these concepts explicitly. It also contains a story arc of the astronaut character from the party that Regan had told, "You're going to die up there", but does not otherwise reference the first film.
    ua-cam.com/video/97uD7Ax_Ukw/v-deo.html
The third installment which Blatty wrote and directed is "Legion" which became "The Exorcist III" in 1990 after a major studio ordered reshoot. This film is a direct sequel to the original "The Exorcist".

I mean, all these stories borrow from the same sort of characters. Roman gods were revamped versions of Greek gods, etc, etc.

I don't know if you knew but this movie was loosely based on a real life exorcism in 1948, the last approved exorcism by the Catholic church in the US. Maybe this is why you found it so "disturbing" as did I. I had a real life experience with a priest who had performed an exorcism overseas and at the time I had no idea what it was (I was around 10 I think) but it was terrifying. But don't worry about getting possessed, you have to invite the demon in, like Father Karras did at the end. Regan probably did that with "Captain Howdy" also, although they didn't make that part clear. The beginning probably made no sense at all to you so if you need help figuring that out just let me know. Anyway good review, have a good day, stay happy and healthy!

Sharon isn't an older sister. She's Chris McNeil's assistant. Many movie actors have assistants to help them with public relations and help set up interviews with the media and also answer calls from the movie studios, their managers, and, as in this movie, invitations to parties like at the White House.
It's true, Regan never explained where she heard that her mom likeed Burke, but notice in that scene, when Chris first comes to tuck Regan into bed, she finds and comments on copies of Photoplay magazine near her bed (which was a magazine about the movie industry and movie stars, which probably included at least one gossip column about movie stars' private lives). I think it's a safe bet Regan read about the false rumor about Burke there. I mean, he's a drunk who gets into fights; I have trouble believing Chris would ever have any romantic interests in him. Well, not unless the demons were influencing his behavior as well as Regan's.

There's movies out of about 50 good horror movies, I never thought u would have the guts to do. I would put hereditary in the top 5!! The descent, barbarian, hereditary, the exorcist, hellraiser, drag me to hell, the ring, the grudge, lights out(watch the 2 minute short first!😮)the woman in black, the Conjuring, insidious Annabelle La llarona, Nun movies... It's all part of the Conjuring universe. The first Halloween and Friday the 13th, The Omen, Hellraiser, first evil dead trilogy, and I'll throw in 1982 The Thing, for the gore factor. But the exorcist, is THE horror movie all others are judged by!!
Ironically, max was only 42 when he filmed this, he had trouble getting jobs after this because directors thought he was older! Linda did a masterpiece acting job here and should have got a lifetime Oscar. The director William Freidken kept the room at 40 degrees, fired pistols by the actors heads to scare them, and the green slime went into the young priest's mouth wasn't supposed to happen, that's why he looks so surprised! He was a cutting edge director! Max ironically not long before this, did maybe the greatest Jesus movie ever made, the greatest story ever told! He also did Conan, 3 DAYS of the Condor, minority report, and others! The moms back was permanently hurt in the scene where she's thrown down. Linda had to have round the clock security for about 8 months, because people were convinced she was possessed! She couldn't get much work after this either. The detective is a masterclass actor. Arthur Miller first saw him on stage, and said he wrote the play, death of a salesman, for him. He was in the acting masterpiece, 12 angry men!
The voice actor is a woman who smoked cigs and drank whiskey every day of her life! She purposely went uncredited for this film! Orson Welles called her the greatest voice actor of all time! This movie, The Thing, Alien and Bladerunner, prove beyond a doubt, that practical effects a are way better than special effects, robotics, and CGI! This also tells u, never get a Ouija board! Somehow without explanation, part of the evil figurine and the Catholic pendant made it to DC. Where they were originally buried in Iraq, I'm sure the pendant was used to keep the demon inside the figurine. But when the Ouija board came out, it released the demon!! Type in here, news footage and stories of people leaving the theater from, The Exorcist 😮😮😮

"It's not reality, it's just a movie." I hate to do this to you, but that's not true. I lived about ten minutes from where the real boy, Ronald Hunkeler, lived on 40th Avenue in Cottage City, Maryland before he moved to St. Louis. Then, he came back to Maryland and worked at NASA. Living that close, I had heard about him most of my life, and seeing the movie at the theater when I was young scared me so bad. He just died four years ago of a stroke. After seeing this at the age of 14, no other movie ever really scared me again.

The Ring is a good movie! As good as this one? That'd be comparing apples with pears. Still, I do like The Ring, and it's one of those rare ones where the 'murican reake is just as good as the japanese movie (which, if I rememebr correctly, was a remake of a korean movie...? I may be wrong).
Loved this reaction! You really caught the essence of it, todays jumpscare "horrors" are pathetic compared to this!
If you want something that's both unsettling to your nerves and yucky I'd recommend The Thing (1982) if you have't seen it already, it's awesome.
Thanks for uploading! Greetings from Sweden

THE DEMON WON: It was never after Reagan, it wanted to Kill Father Merrin, for Exorcising it once before (the time it almost killed him), and it wanted the Soul of a Priest that was losing Faith (Father Karras).
The Pendent was the Key. When Merrin removed one from the dig site, it Released the Demon, and the Demon couldn't possess Damian because he wore one as well. Once it came off during the struggle (and Damian gave it permission), it was free to go into him.

Ummm yeah, that was t the lower abdomen. There was nothing like this rawness in any movie before it, and people indeed fainted and puked and ran out of theaters. But the hype had lines circling blocks at every showing.. It is based on a true story of the months long exorcism of a young boy in the 1930's or thereabouts.

It's based on a fictional book which is inspired by reports of events, but if you look at the original case.... well, nobody died, and it was a fourteen year old boy named Ronald Hunkeler. There was speaking in tongues and weird voices, but not vomiting, no levitating, no spinning heads and no telekinesis. Also no Pazuzu. So it's about as 'real life' as a tabloid is an account of the news... or a reality TV show....

    • @jd190d

@@dp3154 When there have been films of exorcisms, the verbal accounts tend to point to fantastic things that seem supernatural. When the video is viewed it's really mundane acts that anyone could do. There is a tendency in stressful events to remember things far more intensely than what actually happened. The Ouija Board was just a common children's game until after this movie came out. That is when people started talking about it a a way to call up evil spirits. I had a Social Psychology class where the teacher was an amateur magician and did some tricks and some cold readings. Several of the people in class stated that they felt what he was doing was demonic. It's just tricks that anyone can learn and he told us that, but some of the people in class (college students) got really uncomfortable so the teacher stopped the act.

I've run into an interpretation of this movie that seems plausible. The assertion is that she was molested by the director, Burke. Why was he in her room? The absent father opened the door to that. The violent bouncing on the bed, what does that remind you of?
Blatty was intel. That's documented. Someone has to do such things. He had a background in psych as well. When he met Shirley MacLaine and her daughter, he might have noticed things. The daughter, Sachi, wrote a tell all. It probably didn't tell all. You get the idea.
