EXCELLENT reaction! It's SO MUCH more than just an amazing horror movie. One of the best films ever made, of ANY genre. And I love that you focused so much time on the brilliant character interactions (acting, writing) as opposed to focusing on the shocking moments. Storytelling and cinematic art at its finest.
You have to remember that no film is ever greenlit without insurance and no insurance company would sanction putting a child through what we see in the film. The part of Regan McNeil was played by four individuals besides Linda Blair, stand in, body double, stunt double, voice double),plus one animatronic doll. For much of what we see Regan going through, Ms. Blair wasn’t even on the set that day. The result is a masterpiece of editing.
They also employed tricks to shielld Linda Blair from the worst parts. E.g. the "crucifix self-stabbing scene" - she was told she was stabbing somebody and had to say lines that mimicked the same mouth forms of what we hear. What she was stabbing was a thick book resting on a pillow - all stacked in her lap. I.e. Blair did not know what was going on in that scene at all.
Actually, she hurt her back badly due to a technical failure, and Ellen Burnstyn also hurt her back while making this movie. There were kids harmed, traumatized and even killed while making movies which led to some of the reforms we see today. At that time, insurance companies didn't rule every aspect of our lives as they do now.
@@jamessheridan4306 She was in the crucifix scene stabbing the crucifix into a pad set on her waist. It was her being violently flailed back in forth and shaken on the bed. She had to undergo hours of makeup including contact lenses that really bothered her eyes so they used numbing drops. She had to perform in a seriously freezing cold room wearing a night gown while the other actors wore priest’s robes with whatever they wanted underneath and the crew wore winter jackets and she did say all the lines which were then dubbed over. Search UA-cam for the making of and behind the scenes videos. I don’t know about insurance in the 70s but that kid went thru hell, apparently without ever complaining, to make an almost perfect movie.
Your intense interest while watching the movie, is so genuine and refreshing compared to others that watch only to please the viewers. Great review! 👍👍
Yes the mother was played by Ellen Burnstyn. Father Merrin was played by Max von Sydow who was 43 at the time. Due in part to the late great Dick Smith's age makeup and von Sydow's wonderful acting von Sydow had trouble getting movie roles for some time after because people thought he was 80 years old.
Great reaction. I lived about ten minutes from where the real boy, Ronald Hunkeler, lived on 40th Avenue in Cottage City, Maryland before he moved to St. Louis. Then, he came back to Maryland and worked at NASA. Living that close, I had heard about him most of my life, and seeing the movie at the theater when I was young scared me so bad. He just died four years ago of a stroke. After seeing this at 14, no other movie ever really scared me again. I remember a woman getting sick in the theater. And the mother, Ellen Burstyn, suffered a back injury that still bothers her today that she got from being pulled across the room and slamming into the wall. Linda Blair was harassed and got death threats for years; when she was only fifteen, Blair had a security detail shadowing her. Then, a few years after the Exorcist, stalkers began harassing her. Can you imagine making a movie like this and then seeing what real evil looks like?
I did appreciate the very intuitive commentary even though you’re not a horror fan. You obviously gave this a serous watch. So for that, you have my respect. 👍
the blond nurse that open the door was Blairs real mother who did a cameo. the crucifix scene got the movie banned in a number of countries also what made the movie famous
Great reaction. I love watching you younger people discover this incredible movie. I love watching y’all get uncomfortable half way thru when I know it’s only ramping up. I’m glad u appreciate the slow burn. I can’t believe Linda Blair didn’t win an Oscar. I know she was lip syncing the 2nd half but it’s all her facial expressions both big and subtle that make the movie. If she hadn’t been so amazing the whole movie falls apart.
I can’t explain the effect this had when it first released, it was hysteria! I was only 8 and parents would not let me watch it so I checked out the book from the library instead. ( I was a very advanced reader) . The book terrified me and became a lifelong favorite. When I finally saw the movie it was terrifying even though I had read the book and knew what would happen. I consider it a perfect movie, not just a horror movie. And unlike a lot of people I have hated all the sequels.
The demon was Pazuzu ,King of the wind demons . Father Merin had confronted it before and ' it nearly killed him ' . The guy on the street asking for money was possessed , manipulated showing that the demon was everywhere . The director's cut contains an omitted scene of a spider walk down the stairs .

"The Exorcist" is the first installment of William Peter Blatty's, author of the novel and the screenplay, Faith Trilogy. He wrote it as an evangelization tool to show that if the spiritual personification of evil exists in the world in the form of fallen angels / demons, then supernatural goodness as God must exist even more so. "The Ninth Configuration" from 1980, the second installment which he wrote and directed, while outwardly clothed as a farce, addresses these concepts explicitly. It also contains a story arc of the astronaut character from the party that Regan had told, "You're going to die up there", but does not otherwise reference the first film. ua-cam.com/video/97uD7Ax_Ukw/v-deo.html The third installment which Blatty wrote and directed is "Legion" which became "The Exorcist III" in 1990 after a major studio ordered reshoot. This film is a direct sequel to the original "The Exorcist". ua-cam.com/video/SdNhoXA66AY/v-deo.html
This is the movie 51 years ago that actually changed horror movies. Nothing had been seen like it until then. It was actually a movie about Faith and not meant to be as horrific as it was for the time.
Great reaction. I really appreciate your commentary and that you got so much out of the quality of the production. The beautiful locations and cinematography, the casting, the characters and the character developement are all incredible. What gets me is that, if you strip back the overt horror elements, it comes down to being a tragedy. Breaks my heart what the little girl is having to go through with all those medical procedures.I understand what you mean about not watching it again but there is so much more I've picked up on in the backstory and developement by rewatching. I hope sometime you can manage seeing it again. Subscribing and will check out your other stuff👍
You MUST watch Exorcist 3. Ignore Exorcist 2-it’s a waste. But Exorcist 3 is a direct sequel that was written and directed by William Peter Blatty. It’s remarkable. More murder mystery/serial killer thriller than an exorcism movie, but a really, really great conclusion to the story.
I hear people say that... I thought it was lousy. As bad as Exorcist II? Not even close. But still... And it had great actors in it, it just bored me to tears
Very good reaction. The Exorcist is an intelligent, adult orientated movie, unlike the current day horror movies which are filled with excessive gore and predictable jump-scares which are only to keep younger audiences amused. The realistic aspect you mention is largely due to director Billy Friedkin's 'documentary realism' style of directing. It gives The Exorcist a non-cinematic look and feel that all other movies have. When I saw it at the cinema back in 1974 I felt like I was in that room and not watching a movie.
You should watch "Orphan" 2009. I watched it not expecting too much, but it's now one of my top 5 movies of all time. Had me on the edge of seat the entire movie. Great cast, direction, story, etc.
Ok, you’ve got a new subscriber. You treated the film with respect and your critique was intelligent and sensitive. Also, you didn’t ruin things by ‘yabbering’ too much and you didn’t mock the movie… as, sadly, so many ‘reactioners’ do. Just one thing… it’s a shame you cut so many of the key scenes. I would recommend that you *do* watch it again, at least once more. No matter how incisive you were in your first viewing and how much attention you paid, there’s - generally - always a lot missed (one example being the Japanese word “Tsakute” written on the wall in the sound studio Karras takes the recording to. It means “Help”. Most people miss this).
You have seen a remarkable film. Gritty and harrowing. It was revolutionary when it came out. Too much for many. The girls room was as menacing, eeverytime they showed it, it snapped with a new scene of dread. I lived near Georgetown and was familiar with the staircase. it is frightening just to recognize it from the street. Friedkin could give a master class in direction. His film has environment. It is real world.on the brink of fantastic.
Nice reaction. I saw this film in 1973 when it was hard to even get a ticket and a show time. This is a great film, I agree with you great acting, pacing, direction and the camera work was very well done. It's nice to see a film when everything comes together as it should.
Great reaction! There are things in this movie that haven't been attempted again and would never fly even in 2024 (the crucifix scene is just... wild)! And for a movie from 1973, that says a lot. It's such a masterpiece, so well directed, the acting is flawless, make-up is great and it really deserves the Best Sound Oscar it got. I've read the novel and the movie is as good, if not better.
Great reaction video!! Glad you toughed it out and had a watch. Glad you payed attention and didnt talk over it too much. So many of these reactions things are missed by the reactor and twenty minutes later thay are saying, "I dont get such and such..." - Well no shit! you got it though. Lots of appreciation for the "cinema" behind it. Well done.
I like horror movies, BUT this one REALLY bothered me. Scary. Isn't it 50yo? Dated effects, but very believable. I have to skip parts if I go back to watch it again.
The flame growing in the attic was not demonic. Think about it, she opened one acctic door, when Karl opened the other attic door it caused a back draft, just what happens when opening a window in a house fire.
Excellent reaction mate, I’ve seen plenty of reactions to this and a lot of people go into it with the intention to make jokes and do not pay attention to the small details that knit it all together, it does a great job of making you unsettled and slowly building on that but ultimately it’s about faith and redemption, there were two actual priests on the film, Father Dyer, the priest who gave Karras the last rites at the end was one of them
A really fantastic and thoughtful reaction. Brave man for obviously stepping outside of your comfort zone for us. Instant sub! I'd be very interested to see your reaction to another film which deals with different aspects of horror and faith and when the two push up against each other. Give the original "The Wicker Man" (1973) a go, ideally the director's cut if you can find it. I think you'd find it just as interesting and just as uncomfortable.
Great reaction, I watched a different reaction to this early last week, and one of the girls said the same thing about the priest looking like Pedro Pascal. Of course the other girl said she was crazy, lol. I can see it though.
saw this in 1973, I was sixteen ! I`d read the novel , but wasn`t prepared for the film ,it is rather shocking , but compared with some films today is rather tame ! there are five films in all ! exocist , exorcist 2 , exorcist 3 , and two prequels that are actually two versions of the same film ! exorcist two is totally unrelated trash , the third film is good , not as nasty as this one and has an interesting story , it`s set 15 years later ! one of the characters in 3 is someone from the original film you would not expect ! over all a good film !
The 1977 sequel is worth avoiding having been a cheap cash-in with a substandard script but i highly recommend Exorcist 3-Legion (1990) as it's based on the sequel book. IMO it matches the original and is more of a psychological thriller! 10/10
If curious, there's a short doc on UA-cam called The Cultural Impact of The Exorcist. It shows people leaving the auditorium, some are shaking, upset and a few faint.
2 isn't a good movie, rather schlocky in fact, but it should be watched. It gives several answers to questions. Why Regan, when did Merrin do this before, and, most importantly, the name of the demon!
The ending is very similar to the bible story of Jesus casting out ‘legion’ from a man…the demons asked Jesus to cast them into a herd of pigs. Once he cast the demons out into the pigs the pigs jumped over the cliff and killed themselves.
I have so many things to say about this commentary that are positive. But I must say it can be summed up in the fact that you recognized who Lee J Cobb was! This is why I subscribed. I am almost 60 years old and I have to admit I love watching people discover the classics. It seems that you've already been a complete lover of classics considering you attribute The originals the true originals the classics. And I thoroughly agree. Your approach is a very unique one in the reaction videos. And I'm here to say I appreciate your approach. And I think you would enjoy the book a lot as well
Thanks for you reaction! I don't much care for horror or slasher films either and I saw 'The Exorcist' as a child and it gave me nightmares for a long time. If you have not already seen it, you may enjoy "The Sixth Sense' as it is more of a non violent ghost story /solve the mystery kind of thriller.
Now you need to do the other great movie from that error, The Omen. The original 1976, Gregory Peck. ❤❤❤completely different but just as good. Less monster and more Psyc.
😂 just checking I remember the original Omen Trilogy I had nightmares for years and still don't look at clothes irons the same way since. 😅 @Starrynightdiner
I'm an absolute die hard fan of the classics too, I Love the 1931 Dracula and The Haunting. But one extraordinary thing I've realized about The Exorcist is that yes it deals with demonic possession but it's also a very poignant story of the loss of faith and the childhood fears and anxieties of a broken family. For a supernatural horror film it's layered with so many themes of what it is to be human. A classic for so many reasons.
I didn't enjoy this at all & stopped watching at the 14:08 mark due to you cutting out & censoring the best parts of the movie, which tells me you have to be a liberal.
Hi, Brandon. While I don't discuss politics on either of my shows or in comments, I'll say this that applies to all videos on my channel: 1) Blasphemy is cut because I'm a Christian, who takes my faith very seriously. Artists are free to say what they want, and I know the writer of the film was a Christian himself and saw no problem with including blasphemy in the film for the purposes of highlighting evil. That's fine. I, however, am of a different religious tradition and mindset and reserve the right to edit out blasphemy for the public version of the reaction on my channel. That should also be fine. 2) Other profanity is cut, in part, for the same reason above, but also because of my traditional Southern upbringing: "You don't put cussing in front of women and children." If you weren't raised like that, you'll probably never understand. 3) Some of the violence and "gross out" sequences are cut because UA-cam restricts videos with certain content. 4) As is displayed in the video and description, the full version is available on our Patreon. Although I ususally make the Patreon versions uncensored, I did still blackout THAT one scene (I'm sure you know which one I'm talking about) because, to me, it was a bridge too far even to put on my Patreon. I make no apologies for any of the above. - Cole

Subscribed. If you venture further, please skip over part 2 (It's not good, in my opinion) and react to The Exorcist 3 from 1990. Part 3 expands on the relationship of Father Dyer and Lieutenant Kinderman formed in this masterpiece. The role of Lieutenant Kinderman in Part 3 is portrayed by the legendary award winning actor George C. Scott. Exorcist 3 is a must watch after experiencing the original.
Too much play by play commentary, its really annoying, we just want to see your 'reaction'. Also, you do not show the scenes that are most disturbing, like your viewers are all a bunch of children. Most of your viewers watching this reaction have seen the movie, that's why they want to see your reaction, so there is kind of a disconnect happening, we can't see what you are reacting to.. Max Von Sydow's character had angina, those were nitroglycerine tablets he was taking for chest pain. I believe Ellyn Burstyn (sp) suffered a back injury when she was thrown to the floor & Linda Blair was injured as well, but I don't remember the details. "The Omen" 1976 starring Gregory Peck, and the first 3 sequels (Omen 3(?) starred a young Sam Neil) I found to be excellent, and terrifying as well. They were about a diplomat (Peck) discovering that his son may be the anti-christ. There's no 'blood and gore' of later horror/psych films, just 'suspense'. I've yet to see anyone react to The Omen, much less the first 3 of the series. Maybe you'll consider a reaction to them. Greetings from South Mississippi!
I watched this movie back in the day at a drive-in theater (30' X 60' screen) it was wild. You could hear girls in other cars screaming & just after each of the scary scenes there were 1, 2 or more cars leaving ! The drive-in movie theaters are great.... we still have a few in our state ( we once had 10 or more ) I can't understand why you didn't show most of the best scenes in the movie ? You watched it, why not let us watch it too..... its to bad because I really liked the part of the movie you reacted to. I've watched this movie many times with many different reactors, and 90% of them showed all of the rough scenes... because without those, you only have 1/2 a movie at best !

Well done.
Excellent reaction! I subbed!
If you want to see another unique film where Ellen Burnstyn absolutely kills it - try Requiem for a Dream.
YES...CORRECT.
Yes Ellen Burstyn and Max Von Sydow.
Excellent reaction mate, I’ve seen plenty of reactions to this and a lot of people go into it with the intention to make jokes and do not pay attention to the small details that knit it all together, it does a great job of making you unsettled and slowly building on that but ultimately it’s about faith and redemption, there were two actual priests on the film, Father Dyer, the priest who gave Karras the last rites at the end was one of them
I recently got my wife to watch the Exorcist for the first time and she is 50 lol. Well she said her first, only, and last time she will watch it. 😂
Haley Mills and Haley Mills in The Demon Trap. Lol
Never again? .... Jajaja you watch the censored version.
You miss the director cuta versión
That is even better!
There are many who think that is so, I do not, this theatrical cut is perfect.
@@IvorPresents Agreed. I don't think the director's cut adds anything.
@@scouseofhorror104 It literally does, the crab walk scene and host of subtle special and sound effects that add to the original cut.
@@Muckylittlemeno, it literally doesn't. That's why that material didn't make it to the theatrical cut.
@@brt5273 It came after and was inserted to enhance the original including some small CGI effects which weren't possible back then.
I hope you had a chill to see the spider crawl that is missing here.
saw this in 1973, I was sixteen !
One of the best, thoughtful reactions I've ever seen to this classic. So glad I found your channel.
Nice reaction!
Another modern classic I’d suggest if you haven’t seen it is The Shining. It’s a cinematic masterpiece well worth checking out.
This is if Pax TV did a reaction video to the Excorcist 😂.
2 isn't a good movie, rather schlocky in fact, but it should be watched. It gives several answers to questions. Why Regan, when did Merrin do this before, and, most importantly, the name of the demon!
gosh he's cute
The ending is very similar to the bible story of Jesus casting out ‘legion’ from a man…the demons asked Jesus to cast them into a herd of pigs. Once he cast the demons out into the pigs the pigs jumped over the cliff and killed themselves.
Great reaction lol. Best horror movie ever!!
And I think you would enjoy the book a lot as well
An excellent psychological drama with a beautiful reflection on the loss of faith.
The Omen 1976
Next up - Linda Blair in Roller Boogie!! (You'll have to edit that one for different reasons 😍😍)
I'm thinking the older priest might have had a weak heart. Heart meds?
You edited out all of the reaction-worthy scenes. lol
Now you need to do the other great movie from that error, The Omen. The original 1976, Gregory Peck. ❤❤❤completely different but just as good. Less monster and more Psyc.
Are you trying to give him a heart attack or nightmare for life? 😅
@@SBQDawn cole knows i love him ❤️it is a movie everyone should see….once
😂 just checking I remember the original Omen Trilogy I had nightmares for years and still don't look at clothes irons the same way since. 😅 @Starrynightdiner
@@SBQDawnOmen is not that bad.
All the good parts are cut out.
I didn't enjoy this at all & stopped watching at the 14:08 mark due to you cutting out & censoring the best parts of the movie, which tells me you have to be a liberal.
Hi, Brandon. While I don't discuss politics on either of my shows or in comments, I'll say this that applies to all videos on my channel:
1) Blasphemy is cut because I'm a Christian, who takes my faith very seriously.
- Cole
@@randominerecords you could edit/censore the scenes/audio bit you still could show us your reaction to those scenes.

solution to c0pyright issues
IMAGE EDITION :
- Edit the movie with partial % of transparency (and/or text)
- Flip the movie scene from Right to Left.
AUDIO EDITION :
- Put the volume of the movie lower than the volume of your microphone(not too low). (Statics, White noise & your comments , make little distortion to the audio)
- Record the audio of your reaction separately from the audio of the movie, that way you can mute/edit the audio/image of the movie without muting/editing the audio/image of your reaction.
_Extreme edition :_
- Divide the reaction of the movie into part 1, part 2, etc...
- Mute the songs (show the subtitles) / keep your reaction and audio (comments)
- censore/mute offensive imagen/words. (keep your reaction)
,
Jeez
@@randominerecords - I can respect a man who follows his beliefs and faiths, and politics is so dull with horror - But it is a shame that a lot of the gooey stuff got cut.
Not complaining, I can understand, but its still a pity. - This is one of those movies that was considered cursed because of all the strange stuff that happened during filming.
For some reason people don't seem to get that the candle flames up because Chris passes under a gas line. Maybe it just needs to be on the cinema screen.

Disappointing.
Why so short?
Great reaction! A true horror masterpiece, with masterful performances, especially that of Ellen Burstyn and Max Von Sidow. Greetings from Tandil, Argentina! 🇦🇷🤗

Great reaction enjoyed your honest reactions to this classic horror movie...There is an EXORCIST 2 check it out if you dare....lol
You skipped too many great scenes
Too bad you selected the castrated version.
I watched this movie back in the day at a drive-in theater (30' X 60' screen) it was wild. You could hear girls in other cars screaming & just after each of the scary scenes there were 1, 2 or more cars leaving !
The drive-in movie theaters are great.... we still have a few in our state ( we once had 10 or more )
I can't understand why you didn't show most of the best scenes in the movie ? You watched it, why not let us watch it too..... its to bad because I really liked the part of the movie you reacted to.
I've watched this movie many times with many different reactors, and 90% of them showed all of the rough scenes... because without those, you only have 1/2 a movie at best !
It's an old movie.
How scary can it be?.
😳😳😳😳
If you truly appreciated the movie, despite the uncomfatable part, you will also appreciate Exorcist iii, the true sequel.
23:48 The director achieved that by shooting a gun near the unsuspecting actor. 🤦♂️
The heavily edit version is not the one to "react" to. Thumbs down.
Max von Sydow's name is pronounced "Mux fon Seedo" (if I may transcribe it in this pseudo-phonetical way for Americans). 🙂
It wasent Linda Blair ( who plays possessed Regan) playing all the explicit extreme scenes they had a STUNT DOUBLE called EILEEN DEETS who,was young looking and looked bit like Linda in the extreme scenes
