    My Dad had bunions and I had massive foot, torn arches, stress fractures, shin splints, and arthritic ACL issues from having the same narrow foot issues. Discovered barefoot running, and developed a morning routine where I spread my toes with my fingers regularly, and massage the fascia on the bottom of my feet. Ice massage with blocks of ice frozen in plastic cups cured and reset everything and make my legs feel brand new daily. Changed my life...

    While there is not like one genetic disorder specifically linked to bunions, it's not correct to say that they are completely not hereditary. There are several genetic components that make bunion formation more likely, even in proper footwear/without shoes.

But people are notoriously bad with these basic logical operations. When it rains, the uncovered street will be wet. that doesn't mean that it is always true that it rained when you observed a wet street.
      For the example here, it's important to remember that even if you do everything right, you might get bunions.

      You are only partially right in your statement. Yes, certain foot shape, like a classical Greek shape is more predisposed to developing bunions if narrow, pointed shoes with inflexible sole and a high heel are worn for several decades. Such foot will never get deformed with bunions, if a person with Greek feet walks constantly bear feet or wears non-restrictive Greek sandals.

    If the bunion is bad enough you actually have to get surgery to have it permanently repaired, followed by wearing proper shoes. The surgery involves cutting a pie slice out of the bone and realigning it so that it fuses back together in the proper position

    • @thegreypath1777

      @zdeity3620 - That was what I had to do: have my bunions cut off.
      As a kid, I wore lots of pointy-toed cowboy boots. When I grew up and worked in an office, I wore pointy-toed heels.
      At approximately age 35, my feet just ached and ached. I went to see a foot doctor- he recommended foot surgery to correct my bunions.
      During surgery, the foot doctor broke my feet, shaved off my bunions, inserted dissolvable screws, and straightened out my feet. No more foot pain!
      But, I can’t wear pointy-toed footwear anymore. Or my toes will go back to the way that they were.
      Warning!

  • @I.m-Me
    @I.m-Me Рік тому +14

    PSA: To instantly get more flexibility in a muscle/joint & instantly reduce pain caused by tension, learn to flex against a stretch like your pets do. For bunions:
    1) Grab your big toe
    2) Pinch your toes together like you're holding a flip-flop/slipper/chankla
    3) Maintain pinch while pulling outward
    4) It should not hurt. Stop wherever feels like the end, or at the first sign of pain.
    [EDIT: Clarification in 2nd comment below.]
    For best results, bring your awareness to the area. FEEL your muscles squeeze and stretch. You can press and poke surrounding areas, which will improve your awareness. Don't forget to breathe during the process. When you finish, take a deeeeep breath, fully and completely relaxing as you release it. The more deeply you have been and are mentally connected with the bodypart, the better the results. Additionally, the slower the movement, the more muscle fibers have to be operated independently, which further improves the result.
    All of these also contribute to greater control and coordination.
    Techniques like these improve your mind-body connection and can be applied to any muscle.
    If you learn anatomy, or even just looking at drawings, you will see muscles that you didn't even know you had and may never have tried to use consciously. It's as simple as focusing on bringing the bones it connects to closer together. (I personally like to alternate opposites and do a deep relax at the end, but listen to your own body and suit yourself.)
    Feldenkrais Method and Thomas Hanna's Somatics are techniques/modalities that are based on these principles. You might like to look into them for movement patterns and such.

      I don't get number 2. What do you mean pinch your toes like you're holding flip flops??

    • @I.m-Me
      @I.m-Me Рік тому +3

      @@peekaboots01 Have you ever worn the kind of shoe that is just a sole with a strap that goes between your big toe and the one next to it? If they're in danger of falling off, your toes pinch together to grab the strap.
      So step 1 is to put your fingers where the strap goes and step 2 is your toes pinching your fingers. Step 3 is your fingers counterpushing to pry your big toe to the side.
      If you can, try to get the other 4 toes to relax during this process if you're not going to simultaneously pry them away from the big toe. The attempt to operate them separately improves your coordination, control, and results.

    I was wearing my Brooks at works while I was watching your videos and I stretched my toes out inside my shoe and now I realize that the majority of my heel pain is because, while my shoes have space for my toes to spread, my toes have such muscle memory that now I have to consciously stretch my toes out.

    I have bunionettes and this is due to me having very wide feet as a female. Most shoes do not have enough width to fit my feet and oftern the side of my foot buldges out the side of the shoe. I often get pain with certain shoes too. This had been a lifelong struggle, as most kids shoes do not come in a wide veraion! I have to look at mens shoes as an adult as thats all that I can seem to find wide enough without having to get special/ specific shoes that cost hundreds of dollars. I hate shoe shopping so much and usually just get mesh trainers as they are stretchy.

      I have bunionettes too. They sound cuter than bunions 😄 But yeah, I feel ya. When I wear trainers I buy the same size (7) but buy mens. Mens Nikes (which is what I usually wear) are cut wider than a womans size 7 Nike. Same with most brands I think.
      It means it's harder to find nice colours but the comfort is worth it.

    Bunions CAN be an inherited trait. There are several different conditions that can be inherited and can increase the chance of bunions. I was in elementary or middle school by the time I had bunions and it runs in my family, along with the genetic polysyndactly I have that effects my hands. I wish he didn't completely negate the fact that some people literally have no control over bunions forming. It had nothing to do with shoes for me.

    Shoes aren't necessary the cause of the bunions. Rear ankle instability is what actually allows the foot to deform to the shoe. You need to (kinda) lock the foot bones together. If I recall it's the first day that needs to be held together. If you don't use your foot muscles and when you walk and you are over pronated you're rear foot will be unstable. This will allow peoples toes to deform, but more importantly it will allow that first metatarsal to deviate inwards. A foot can only be corrected as long as your your first metatarsal head doesn't cross the line of the muscles that abduct the big toe (Abductor hallicus, flexor hallicus brevis). Once that happens your abductors will adduct the toe and the whole thing spirals out of control. Most surgeons don't seem to do a good job of fixing it.

  • @martj1991
    @martj1991 Рік тому +7

    Bunions are genetic. What you claim is BS. They originate because of a hallux valgus. And the hallux valgus exists and increases through three factors: genetic, foot deformity static/dynamic and enviromental factors (e.g. shoes).
    Anatomically in genetic patients the first metatarsal stands in a varus position, usually combined with a shortened first ray. Statically the pulling force from the extensor and flexor of the hallux come from the lateral side of the tibia. This forces the insertion part on the distal phalanx to pull the toe in valgus like a string on a bow. Because of the shortened first ray the foot hyperpronates in de midtarsal joint. Thus creating hyperpressure on the fist ray also increasing the hallux valgus.
    You cant anatomically fix the pulling forces of tendons. So focus on restoring foot function with orthotics and finally focus on shoes. Trust me, i am a podatrist.

    and people wonder why I prefer to go barefoot unless absolutely necessary especially since i have allodynia (neurological skin condition) which just adds a whole other level on top of the damage shoes can do to your feet and can make even the feeling of socks or shoe materials incredibly painful. Wearing shoes, or certain types of fabrics/styles of clothing can feel like pins & needles, extreme itchiness, or like my skin is on fire. Seams, rivets, belt loops, tags, & elastic bands tend to be the biggest hotspots but a pair of tight fitting socks, or the stiff top edge of shoe can make standing and walking unbearable Eben for short periods. When I do wear shoes I'm super careful/picky about what I choose to put on my feet. I've been known to garden and do animal chores or drive equipment etc on our rescue farm in my bare feet I just clean my feet well before I go inside. The only time I wear shoes on our property is when I know I'm going to be using tools where my feet need to be protected like shovels, chainsaws, brush cutters, weed wackers, etc. Safety first!

    I learned about this 2 years ago. I wish I knew decades ago but I don't know if wide box shoes were made until recent years. Working in the service industry in my youth is when I started having to stand for hours on end in closed-box shoes that flattened my arch causing hyper pronation of my ankle bone causing the arch on my feet to collapse creating a rippling effect from my feet to my mid-back. When I first started using them I go horrible pain in my left knee, this was the worst side than the right one. I think because the tendons that were supposed to be stretched normally were retracted and when the bones aligned this caused them to stretch more than they had in decades, it took 4 weeks but the pain went away and I don't have any issues with my feet anymore wearing toe socks, toe separators, and wide box shoes. They are called different things Minimalist shoes, barefoot shoes, etc... I use the same exact type of toe separator that he shoes in the video.
