I'm absolutely a radical Hunchback pilot. The Swayback doesn't have that big punch of the orthodoxy Hunchback, but it does have the number of dice rolls that just feel nice in the hand. Plus, it always allows for celebratory microwave burritos, pizza rolls and/or hot pockets should you live.
I was a heretic like you once. Then I started playing TT and damn bro. That 20 damage to a single compartment when most mechs in your weight range and a little heavier might have only 20 armor in most of their compartments is just crazy powerful. There were fights I won because I shot a laser at a side torso of a heavy mech that had 24 armor there, following by an ac20 into that same spot, triggering an ammo explosion that sent thousands of BVs into the grave, almost ensuring my victory.
@@HalIOfFamer If a mechworks company could find a way to replace heat sinks with load-bearing AC20 ammunition, they would instantly corner the Hunchback market.

It's terrible life advice if you ask anyone that keeps having setback after setback wipe out all they tried to save and now they can't even afford to eat 3 meals a day. Failure in the lower classes tends to become permanent and you cannot escape. These words of cynicism brought to you by a man that saw both his parents become disabled due to workplace injuries.
There are actually 3 Black Hawks:
● the Nova, a 2870 50-ton Clan OmniMech with 16 tons of pod space that the Inner Sphere calls the Black Hawk
● the Black Hawk-KU, a 3055 60-ton Inner Sphere OmniMech made to replicate the Nova to the best of the Inner Sphere's abilities, at ten tons heavier and with a bit more armor and 17 tons of pod space (but the extra vulnerability of an Inner Sphere XL engine to get the same speed)
● the Black Hawk, a 3073 50-ton Clan BattleMech version of the Nova, not in BTA 3062 because it wasn't around yet
Kallon's 3053 75-ton Penetrator was also based on the Nova/Black Hawk
I was gonna say, the Black Hawk KU was the House Kurita IS Omnimech answer to the Nova Smoke Jag and Nova Cat were using to stomp them.

On a side note, Tex is completely right. This has just been one of those things I had to make slow progress on but kept on moving forward.

I feel the swayback shines most in "Mechwarrior" where you can fire all the lasers on a single point, which basically gives it the equivalent of a big AC

I would like to say, apropos of nothing, that Helldivers 2 is soon going to introduce a mech that has quad autocannons. As someone who was introduced to Battletech by your wonderfully made videos and subsequently played MW5: Mercs and greatly enjoyed it, the thought of taking apart gigantic armored bugs with the satisfying "thump thump thump thump" of four ACs fills me with a childlike glee.

Tex, in relation to your comments about the OST mechs, I only have ever seen the scout in action, it was utterly fuckin hilarious, it carried 1 primary weapon(Rex large lazer)in the crotch, & almost every time it ran up to commit a critical shot, then ran away(in my mind I added a trench coat & woman screaming). "Too technical" was the channel I watched this happen, good guy.

Why do I feel like Tex company is usually a bunch of leftover Hunchbacks and Urban mechs.
Honestly, I'd be kinda surprised if it was anything more than that. The fact he's got an atlas is a great success!

A lance with AMS is 4 vehicles with suboptimal dps. A lance without AMS is a crater.
Bring AMS, bring support, never skimp on survivability. It's not enough to win, you need to win with enough leftover to go again when things go south.

I picked IS vehicle start with a canopian bookish mech officer, and the second battle I fought had a mobile turret with 2 cLAMS and 2 cAMS 😊
It takes 3 ams firing to kill thunderbolt missiles,when they hit say goodbye to your side torso. I run 2 regular and 2 laser on the hero goliath quad mech as my spear tip. You can wipe an lrm 20 volley easy. I even run one on the head of a hunchback 4H for the same reason. Keeps the missle magnets like the king crabs safe.

Medium Laser swayback is amazing if you're using the (technically optional but it makes perfect sense) rule that you can group weapons in a location to all fire on the same roll and hit the same spot.
I mean, if you have a cluster of four lasers in your right arm, and you're pointing them at the same target, and you fire them all at the same time, it makes no sense that they'd hit random locations. The same holds true for a cluster of six lasers in the right torso.
We had a rule like that in a long running campaign game. But it only applied to new mechs, or fresh undamaged ones that'd had full calibrations and tests done. As soon as your mech had seen action and been refit a few times or had lasers of mixed manufacture then it was back to the random table. Not all weapons will necessarily have the same ignition/start times, might interact badly or be focused on hitting different ranges optimally so they go high or low on a fixed mount.
It gave the mechs a lot of eccentricities and character. Individual parts and shit the pilots were gunning to replace and salvage or even steal.
The random table isn't bad, it accounts for enemy pilots movements happening during your firing, like torso twisting to splash damage or maybe later in the turn they twisted to volley off a different weapon at someone else at a more effective range. Maybe you powerwashed a partial beam across terrain as you were tracking them and cut a traffic light down. A turn in battletech being like 10 seconds a lot of things can happen reaction wise.
I’ve got my fourth book in proof read, and Tex during the pandemic was a big part of stopping my dreams from being just memes.

My best buddy for playing multiplayer with is a light mech specialist in both mwo and mw5. He's really quite good at it. I personally prefer heavier armed slower mechs, urbie, hunchie, battlemaster, kodiak and similar solutions to my problems.
I can't get enough of Battle-tech/Rogue-tech, & it's cool I get to see a bit of "advanced" here.
I had lost both my grandfathers at a very young age. while the age difference between us only spans a generation over the past 5 years Tex you have helped to fill that missing grandfather role in my life. Giving words of wisdom and important life lessons in the form of witty anecdotes, silly stories, or when necessary in plain frank statement. along with also being a presence that provided me with a sense of comfort and security when times felt dark, letting me know everything's gonna be okay.

I'd like to thank you for showing us BTA 3062. I finally got over my "this is too much going on" pensiveness and pressed into the game. And now, I'm wading in, elbows deep, into a second coming of "Stefan Amaris" and it's been an absolute blast! Even got some Rifleman III salvage along with some other crazy death weapons tech.

This is something that is going to sound a little weird, but something about having you talking in the background is extremely relaxing.
I love the Ost- series for the story and because I like the Ostrogoths of history. That man has good taste.
The Ostwar is just a slick looking machine, and when it comes to playing objectives the Ostscout is a Spider that can actually survive.
I love how there's ammo in each torso of tex's assaults that makes for a !fun situation.
The atlas in the lunar duel punched the black hawk to death by hitting the head. Absolutely fantastic.

12 Er Small and 4 MG Nova Prime is by far my most dangerous mech in MWO. My first one has 200K legacy XP.
@10:00 I am totally those people... I am an Assault boy through and through... but in my defense I'm at least pretty damned good at piloting a big mech. Lot of Light kills under my MWO belt from pilots who didn't expect the goofy SRM-boat Awesome to have those moves. 🙃
I just wanted to put a shout-out to my old LT, who had earned the Name "Double-Take" because one of my fellows made the most amazing grenade toss (practice in Fort Devons, Mass) and our LT saw this, and his ENTIRE upper body turned with his head as he did his double-take!
After that, the Captain began calling our LT "Double-Take".

I think everyone has that moment where they fall in with a mech that everyone hates eventually?
Mine was the Wasp. I know most hate it and clown on it for bring a laser and a machinegun to a mech fight. But I always remember it from this RPG campaign where I rolled it up as my starter on the table.
... and then proceeded to run circles around a Madcat who couldn't get me in weapon arc while I just kept chunking out their back armor in a Duel.
Stinger has MGs, wasp has 1xml/1xsrm2. Similar experience with a Charger. Playing online on an online Battlemech game called Neveron, played in the Free For All arena. The unit you got was random and balanced by BV, so you could end up in a light with a great pilot or in an assault with a poor one. My Charger rolled horrible for gunnery but excellent for piloting. Spent the next 4-5 hrs running around roflstomping anyone it saw.
first nice cockpit punch, second i cant think of a more appropriate mech for tex than the gunslinger whose id is gun nerd. third although this was probably recorded a while ago, dont forget to check the steiner store in the upper left of the store tab. might have more fun stuff

I was never a huge fan of battle tech until I got into bta 3062. Love the mod so much.

As someone who doesnt play any mechwarrior game and simply just like the setting I have to say that most of my favorite mechs are light and medium mechs.
The Raven stands out as something I'd probably run multiples of were I ever to play the tabletop!

I love Light/Medium mechs. Heavies and Assaults are the face of the franchise, and for good reason, but they feel done to death sometimes. You can only make an 80t PPC boat so many times before it gets boring. Lights and Mediums force you to get a little more creative with the tools available, and doubly so if you want to try running weird shit like LAMs.
BTA is unkind to Assualt mechs because of the accuracy nerfs against anything slightly smaller. Every weapon needs a fire control. It works out better to take a mix of heavies mediums and lights and MAYBE one deathstar 100 ton monster.
So Tex got the Black Hawk-KU confused with the Black Hawk, which is a Dark Ages Clan battlemech. The original IS call-sign for the 50t omni-mech Nova was the Black Hawk, which the Dragon re-used when developing their own 60t first generation IS omnimech known as the Black Hawk-KU (Kuritan). Later the Clanners (mainly Clan Sea Fox, which had been known as Clan Diamond Shark for some time) made battlemech variants of some of their most popular old omnimechs largely for sale to Inner Sphere powers during the Dark Ages. At least that's what the lore says, mostly the Dark Ages wargame couldn't handle omnimechs so they made battlemech variants so they could still play with the clicky system. I only care to point this out because Tex was talking about loving some of the old finicky IS omnimechs that existed for a time, and the Black Hawk-KU was one of those.

Tex is that person in the diner who no meal is ever good enough as is and has to customize it and add all the condiments… the results which are spectacular and head scratch inducing. But you occasionally look at it and go… yeah I kind of want to try it like that too..
I will stand up and say "Im a Light Mech specialist". I have created more chaos in the cockpit of a Locust 1E than i ever have with an assault. The same goes for the little Mist Lynx. I've used those to death.
After that, i tend to play jumpy Mediums. And yeah, i play a NOVA by choice. I the last three years, ive lost only one fight in a Nova, and zero fights in a Locust. I fell in love with Novas in Mechwarrior 2. In Classic, it always taxis Battle Armor into the fray.
Lights, Mediums, tanks, and Battle armor are my typical loadout.
Its when i go with Heavies that my luck runs out.

My year long bad times is ending. I got boned hard over vehicle repairs but I switched autoshops and will be getting my vehicle back soon. Yes. It took a year for 1 shop to realize they didn't know what they were doing.

16:32 that heavy gauss needing to be manually switched to sort range mode is weird. I seem to recall RT had that damage curve scale automatically. Maybe the trick for it was too complicated?
I agree on the AMS, especially on smaller units when you can fiddle them around and have the same reason to fit ECM on Light-Medium mechs as well. It annoys the shit out of the enemy.
If you had to outfit a battalion of mechs, then yeah they're not going to all have the fancy gear on them because there comes a point when its just financial madness to go that route, but if you've only got 5-6 mechs then they're critical components of your formation you want to keep slugging away for as long as possible
And using AMS mitigates the ignominious death by LRM/MRM/MMS/Rocket sandblasting until mech stick stackpole...

I got a Commando I shoved a XL engine in because frankly I crammed enough missiles into it. I won't have to worry about the engine crits because it'll just explode instead. Besides the XL let me max all the armor. I used it to kick shins and pump missiles and lasers into asses.
i have nothing against light and medium mechs or the people who favour them. i can appreciate swift movement, but i will always go for heavier and and assaults because i can handle them better. since "prince of havoc" (the first book ever i read back when i learned reading) i am into lrm and recon mechs. just loving the thought of heavy fire support raining down whereever its needed 😄
Firestarter is love, fire starter is life... Also a warcrime, but that's not here or there. Lights all the way.

It's basically a Highlander that went "fuck it, I'm putting a Gauss Rifle on BOTH arms!"
When it comes to Hunchbacks I do tend to prefer having a big gun, usually an LB-X AC/20 because they can throw cluster shots at aircraft when I need it. But I have also tried using a Gauss Rifle version and found that it can work well with sniper mechs.
When I want to go crit hunting I have a Spider 8Xr to jump behind someone and backstab with 5 ER Small lasers and follow that up with a sword attack or a kick. A TMM of 5 is easy to get and still has accurate attacks.

Blackhawk is the Inner Sphere knock-off copy of the Nova. Still an omni mech but 65 tons because the Sphere couldn't copy it exactly right.
Need Apollo FCS on those MRM's. It is worth it to drop an ML or 2 to add Apollo. + accuracy, + damage. Makes MRM's a choice missile system.

The black hawk KU is an IS omni. The Black Hawk Standard is a clan standard battlemech, not an omni, from the dark age.

On the topic of most people preferring heavies/assaults, i personally feel most at home with a phoenix hawk(with which i frequently brawl with heavies and assaults), and ive got a bud who pilots a fucking baseline jenner, and he refuses to pilot anything slower than 5/8 if at all possible
Heavy mechs can go 5/8/5 which is fun mix of mobility/armor/firepower. As I get smaller I go gimmicky... like a medium can go 5/8/7 with a targetting computer and 2 snubnose ppcs but that feels dirty (light engine, not even xl). Go XL slap on 2 capacitors and some dhs . . .
