- Today I have the Zvezda C-130J to look at - finally!
It has been out for a while, but for various reasons I only just got one and here are my initial thoughts on the kit.
In stock now at Models For Sale at a great price.

Greetings from the USA and thanks for your service.
Worked on the "K" model in the 80s when they were at Lyneham, didn't know that the black panel on the fin is a deicing boot thought it was just an antenna.
Too bad the RAF got rid of all their Hercs, at least some found new homes. Some of the Ks ended up in Austria and Mexico and a couple of Js went to Bangladesh.
One J Model ZH885 was sold to the US Government and now flies for the US Marines as 170000 "Fat Albert" for the US Navy Blue Angels display team.
Looks like a good model kit with lots of details for 1/72 scale, might be nice to do one of each in RAF and Blue Angels colors and display them side by side.
always nice to listen to an experienced person Jen , not just armchair experts . Interesting and entertaining -can't wait for the build !
Another great review, Thankyou Jen. Looking forward to seeing you build the kit.
Nice Review. It has been many years since I heard the term Fairy used for the crewroom magic sleeping sofa dwellers.
I work with too many of them!
Great video! It’s so nice to hear someone who really knows their subject. I’ve just got both kits as I am going to build a stretched ‘K’ for me and a short ‘J’/C5 for someone who flew them.
I loved your caveat at the beginning, you may not consider yourself an SME, but us laypeople really should! Great review. I got the H version because of your initial build, probably won't get the J but only because I have room for 1 herc only.
Thanks for a superb review.
Harald, Helicopter guy.
If there's only room for one Herk, it really needs to be a Super Herk.......
Hi! I have been waiting for this one. 🙂
Zvezda are getting more and more serious, even though they sometimes try to reduce their production costs when releasing new versions of the same aircraft. You can't blame them after all...
Thank you for yet another great and competent review!
Another great video, IMHO you make some of the best modelling videos on YT.
Great review, and can’t wait to see how you add to the J model 😊
You need to get some in mate. I started on Shackletons!!!
Great kit and nice detailed video as always!
You'll need Bring It! correction sets for BOTH C-130 kits in any scale released by ANY manufacturer up to date anyway.
They propose correct engine cowlings, props, spinners, exhausts and correct wheels including US and British versions of the type.
I'm so used to see the danish c-130J, they fly over our house all the time because we live so close to the airport, so i whish there where decals for an RDAF C-130J-30
Great review ( as usual ) Thanks very much for posting
Really enjoyed the review, thanx for sharing.
Wonderful aircraft and fascinating video.
just found your channel i have subscibed and will be watching your content , thanks very much for an informative and very entertaining video. I have just come back to modelling following my retirement
Welcome to the nuthouse Christopher!
And of course it was released not long after I bought the Wingman conversion set and started cutting up my Italeri.
Another very helpful and informative review, thanks for that !
Wasn't there a thing about the lower wing flap outline as well ? Not bothered myself but I read somewhere that Italeri has this nailed whereas Zvezda's is non existing.
I had a Wingman set, and to be honest it's pretty rubbish. Mine went in the bin, I only kept the decal sheet ....
More rivet-counting...Yeah, they’re VOR antennae on the vertical stab, Jen.
APUs- H & J are exactly the same. E model had a GTC & ATM (gas turbine compressor with a vertically opening clam-shell door which couldn’t be operated in the air, and a seperate air turbine motor with its NACA inlet duct near the top of the left fairing.
I’ve got my after-market RAAF delivery scheme decals ready- Aussie J’s were originally our current underside colour all over. Still waiting for the kit to make it to the shelves in Australia. Yeah, I won’t bother correcting too many details that I won’t see once it’s buttoned up, either.
A great review, correct technical info (bonus points) and classy production.
I thought the APU itself was the same, just the installation that's different.
The K model had the GTC, left over from the E model upgrade to the K standard.
Glad I stumbled upon a heavy that might know what they're talking about. I'll be building mine soon and I'm wondering what colour to do for the coating that seems to exist on the belly and panels adjacent to the props. Any advice on that? Cheers, from an ex armourer 👍
The coating is a thin perforated rubbery sheet, about 2mm thick. When new it is virtually exactly the same colour as fresh paint. Strangely though, it actually darkens as it weathers, while the surrounding paint fades to lighter colours. If modelling a fresh looking aircraft I'd probably add just a touch of yellow to the paint mix to make it a very slightly different hue. If modelling a more weathered finish then the best bet will be to use photos for guidance to be honest.
It’s look very very complex!
Funny that you mentioned not finishing the Italeri version. I've been struggling with mine, I cannibalized an old kit to get the stretch, but it's the engines that are leaving me dead in the water. I made new spinner fronts from old drop tanks, but the nacelles are awful. May have to spend some serious coin and get this kit...
The engines are the worst part, yes. There are aftermarket 'corrections' available, but most of them aren't much better or are just wrong in other ways. The Zvezda kit is light years better
@@JenesisDesignsandModelcraft yeah, I've already reached out to my pusher... he has a kit put aside, it's pricey but I may be able to sneak it in the house. Sad thing is, the model was for a friend who passed away, so I can't just toss it out...
Ex Harrier heavy here, very sad there's no 1/1 scale GR9s around anymore. Using 1/48 to scratch that itch now! It's not quite the same without the smell of eau d'OM15.
Thankfully the J doesn't use OM15, nasty smelly stuff lol
I know it's a bit of a older video but does anyone build a spectre version of it
There is a conversion set, but it is of Russian origin and may well be very hard to find or get your hands on!
I'd love a flat belly
Me too!
