    The fact that the rest of the family in the first story (including OPs fiancé) acted like the mothers behavior was totally normal is whats so scary about all that. Shes so deranged the rest of the family has been battered into submission

    • @Fluffykunn
      @Fluffykunn Рік тому +10

      abusive people get their power from normalizing their BS to the point their victims will stick up for them. Sometimes is not even about submission but purely control. my grandma was like that, if you weren't beaten into submission (grandma was very violent) you were placed in a situation where you had no control.

    • @SartorialAF
      @SartorialAF Рік тому +3

      Exactly! Clearly the GF was not like her mother or he'd have noticed. She clearly reverts back to a submissive role when around her abusive mother and can't see past it. Wish OP had seen this situation for what it really was and not just dipped over a dinner!

      Yep I was just coming to say this cus if they really thought she was right they would have been yelling with her (we’ve all seen entitled families on tic tok or in real life) but instead they all just sit there blank and don’t say a thing and just let her yell even the 6 year old don’t have a reaction to her yelling meaning even she’s used to it. They were broken down so much they think the entitlement is normal but for some reason don’t seem to act outwardly entitled themselves other then agreeing with the mom which is hella weird I’ve never seen that

    *Story #1:* Yes ma’am Granny is a hero LMAO. OP’s GF’s family is UNHINGED, and the fact that OP and his pseudo-fiancé broke up due to the restaurant fiasco “Ellen” caused and once the red flags were exposed; OP not only acknowledged them he dodged a nuclear missile.

    It's cool that OP works at a non-profit. I work at an art nonprofit that specializes in glass art and classes. Just because someone works at a nonprofit, doesn't mean they don't get paid. It depends on the organization, but my work pays me $15/hr for part time work. We occasionally get volunteers but all staff including me get paid a set wage. That's a common misconception for nonprofits that workers don't get paid but we do.

    Story 2- her parents have serious issues and enable each other to live in an illogical world run by their own rules. It’s horrifying enough any parent would treat their grown offspring like they are still children or extensions of themselves, but this extent of manipulation and guilt tripping is inexcusable. OP’s parents may be beyond help after being in their own world for this long. All that can be done is accept that this may not be fixable and it’s not a victim’s responsibility to fix it. We can only control our own lives.

    For the third story, I had to "break up" with my mom for a while because I had become too disabled to work and I wanted to go on disability while I figured out my options for a potential career.
    My mom didn't like this. She thought that I just wanted to be lazy and take advantage of her, so then she kicked me out.
    Then her friend's son died and my mom realized that she was wrong for being mad at me for my choices. Now we are talking again, she's proud of me for having my own apartment, and she's supportive of me.
    You don't always have to agree with your kids' choices, but a good parent will try to understand and will be supportive anyway.
    I can back up that therapy helps so much. And if a narcissist parent wants to fix the relationship, only do it if they're willing to do both individual therapy and family therapy.

    For the story of the woman whose parents hate her lawyer boyfriend: I think her parents were attempting a power play, thinking if they got their daughter to give in, then they could control her forever, probably getting money out of her eventually. They were attempting some long-term manipulation that would solidify control. That's why they had no logical reason for disliking him.

  • @janicevango5791
    @janicevango5791 10 місяців тому

    Story 3: It would seem that no matter what desirable qualities OP’s boyfriend has, OP’s parents are always going to find something pathetic to dislike him for. So he’s a lawyer, educated, kind, understanding, reliable, etc. But Lord forbid that he didn’t do the driving to the cabin instead of OP, wore a hoodie to keep warm at the cabin and when they travelled to boyfriend’s parents for OP’s introduction they didn’t call in to them, even though they had already called to introduce the boyfriend. Boyfriend could give all his money to charity, help at soup kitchens every day and take part in overseas aid and it still wouldn’t be enough for OP’s parents. She’s well rid of them.

    The one with the parents that 'just don't like her boyfriend' really sounds like their nest is emptying out, and none of them are willing to admit their daughter is a grown ass adult. They won't have any other children that 'need' them, and they since they aren't the center of her attention anymore , and don't want to 'share'-- they resort to slander/threats/tears. It might have been able to be worked out with group therapy, but in this context? It's like a part of them 'needed' to push her away first rather than accepting the inevitable. It 'needs' to be 'her fault' somehow, so they save face. So sad.

He should look into what's available in his area for people with autism. If he's in America then the Americans with disabilities organization is a good resource.

    My parents were like as well. When I was just interested in my now husband they asked if he was Christian and when I said “ya know, I never asked. I don’t think so” i knew it was gonna be a rough ride. They never treated him well, 4 years into our relationship he defended me when I had a panic attack in front of them and he was literally banned from not only their house but ALL family functions. My parents would fight with me all the time about him, tell me “it’s him or us, are you really going to choose him?” And I was like “are y’all? Gonna make me choose? For WHAT”. This went on for SIX YEARS. Then he proposed and ALL OF A SUDDEN the whole thing changed. My mom was over the moon ready to plan a wedding and begs us daily for her grandchildren. Once we got married he was allowed to family parties again 💀. I always feel bad because his parents always treated me like another daughter even before we were dating!

    In the story with the Karen parents, I’m wondering if the boyfriend is a different raaaace? The fact that they said he wouldn’t “fit-in” with their family is a major red flag.
    Okay, never mind. They are a narcissistic duo, and are upset they are losing their number one source of supply. They’re afraid that if she has a healthy relationship then they won’t be able to gaslight her anymore with the bare minimum that they have been doing in her life. And, that this relationship will solidify that they truly are the source of her anxiety etc.
    My heart goes out to OP, she may have to gray rock them if not go full no contact.

    If you are dining with someone who acts like that in a restaurant, and you don’t say anything, you’re also an asshole. I mean, barring very few scenarios (like your Grammy’s dementia or a domestic abuse situation), if you don’t speak up or remove yourself from the situation, you’re pretty much complicit in the assholery. I can not tell you how many tables I’ve had approach me during or after someone at their table has acted a fool, and quietly apologize to me for someone else’s behavior. Once, I had a lady stand up and throw her food at me before calling me and my coworkers horrendous names, because she didn’t like that the egg on the eggs Benedict was poached. That’s how it comes, and it says so on the menu. Not a single person at their table stopped her, or even made eye contact with me, as she continued on to tell me I should kill myself. It was a 12 top. As soon as they were done, all but one came up to me and meekly apologized. “We really don’t even know her that well, so we didn’t want to get involved.” Really? You didn’t want to get involved, while she threw food all over the tables around yours? Or when she told my manager that he was clearly retarded, and a charity hire? What would it have taken for you to say something??? What I ended up actually saying was, “I appreciate you saying so. If you ever find yourself in that scenario again, don’t be afraid to speak up. I have to respond professionally in those scenarios, but you don’t. And had she been mean to you, I could have kicked her out, because I can’t have someone verbally assaulting my other customers.” Honestly, I almost quit that day. Not because of her, but because the owners didn’t kick her out. I mean, the whole table stayed for 4 hours, and they were disruptive for at least 2 of them. I’m not a fighter, but I was so angry, I was shaking and fighting off adrenaline tears. When I have my own restaurant, I’m never tolerating that kind of behavior. Oh, and I’m actually gonna pay everyone too.

    I don't understand parents who think they have any say in their child's life once they're adults. How can you tell your 20+yo who to date? Especially when there's no DV or anything involved. I've been no-contact with my parents and sisters for 9yrs+ & I have no regrets about it.

      Since she knew that they don't want to see him, then I don't think forcing meetings would do anything good. For me it looks like they just didn't like to see her happy.

      He was banned from the house and family functions for wearing a hoodie, those parents are nuts and the best thing that could happen is staying far away from them and especially if they have kids. Those kids will be subjecting to same treatment she was

    The story of the parents not liking the boyfriend/lawyer, were rather possesive. They would've done the same thing with every boyfriend that she would've brought to meet them. She did what she had to do to leave that toxicity behind.

    (Although like he did physically discipline me as a child he just meant he at least MOSTLY stopped once I turned 14)

    Those parents are irrational and it's about control. My mom has hurt her own feelings and created distance between us by creating narratives and treating them like reality

    Granny is my hero! God i hope to be like her when im older and she sounds like both my dear grandmas who have sadly pass i miss them dearly! Also, im 4'9 and weigh 145lbs right now and i always weighed 110 until i was 32, im 34 now so, her height and weight is perfect! I bet shes a beautiful girl as well! Just because her daughter won a pageant doesnt mean shes a pretty girl inside or out, because a lot of girls and women who do the whole pageant thing, are usually seriosuly dolled up, heavy make up, hair, heck some of them even get plastic surgery done so early and can get disgnosed with EDs and other mental illnesses its rather sad so yeah. And the third story, if my parents ever said that to me without good and valid reasons, id go low contact or no contact because im an adult and her bf sounds like a smart, kind man. I get so tired of hearing about "traditional norms" and parents who care about money or status more than their childrens happiness its so disappointing and disgusting. Im so lucky and blessed for my parents and the life ive had and continue to have even though my mom has passed r.i.p momma i miss you! Love yall and this pod so much and the OK fam! ❤❤
