    When I first saw one of your videos on my recommended, I was so confused as I hated spiders and was terrified of them. But after watching most of the videos on your channel, I absolutely love the tarantulas and I am completely fascinated by their beauty, I am thinking of looking to get one of my own, although would need one for a beginner as I have never had any before. Thank you for showing the world these beautiful creatures. I think this is my favourite channel on UA-cam! ❤️🕷

    @Exotics lair try using a shell for water bowls as you said you didnt like to see the writing on bottle lid plus it looks more natural too , sea shells any really they come in all shapes and sizes and look much better than a coloured lid in a natural looking enclosure.. just a thought

  • @prima808
    @prima808 4 роки тому +3

    I was just watching his more recent videos and am impressed how his enclosures became bigger & better over the years. However, I prefer your narration style from 3 yrs ago as opposed to now. It was much clearer & calmer back then.
    Btw, by the time you can visibly see the mold, there's already billions more spores you can't see.

    try to.. boil Cork bark and dry leaves in hot water... and dry it under the sun about 1day for the Leaves and 3 days for the bark to ensure theres no Molds... for me do not put Dry Leaves anymore it attracts molds, bacterias, and Mites if it's not clean only for me..

    If you double the holes for ventilation up toward the top it will help. Also some very tiny holes below the substrate level will encourage airflow in the sub keeping mold growth down.

    • @ExoticsLair
      @ExoticsLair  7 років тому +1

      Thanks for the tip! (:
      I think it's too late to poke holes around the substrate area, but might poke some holes on the lid.

      Holes can also allow more spores to get in though.

    Hey dude, you can try first leaving the wood in the hot sun(direct sunlight) or baking it in the oven for a few minutes. Then throw it into the freezer overnight. That should kill the mold spores.

    • @ExoticsLair
      @ExoticsLair  7 років тому +3

      I collected the wood, washed them off, and placed them under the sun.. I forgot about them so they were pretty much under the sun/rain everyday for over a month. I did toss them in the oven for 10 mins at full blast, but never put them into the freezer.. hmm.. I read somewhere that mold spores are already in the air, so I guess whatever you do to try and kill spores, mold will still come if the enclosure is too saturated with moisture and lack ventilation.

    • @mengarooo3149
      @mengarooo3149 7 років тому +1

      Yep, the spores are in the air but they can also collect in quantity in certain spots. Sorta like the more seeds you throw, the greater the chance to sprout.
      I noticed that with a certain shop I would buy my driftwood and cork bark from locally, every enclosure I placed their stuff in sprouted mold and not because of over-saturation. But I have noticed after a wash, sunning and freezing, no mood so far.

  • @mengarooo3149
    @mengarooo3149 7 років тому +25

    Oh...with your catch cup, poke a few small holes at the bottom of the cup. So next time you can use a small satay stick(blunt end) and poke the spider gently through the bottom to push it out.

      Hahaha, I got a Red Giant Centipede over the weekend. The bastard/bitch is shy over 20cm...rehousing her from the small sandwich box it was in was fun...I tried tipping it into its new home with no luck. Then I poked its tail with a stick and it shot out like Usain Bolt! Ran all around its new home and got half it body out before I could close the lid. Had to quickly pin it firmly but gently between the box and the lid and drop it into a bucket I had close by.
      Moved my operation into my shower to prevent escape should it run out again...then realised I'm trapped in the shower with it...
      Hahahaha...damn centipede.

    just a tip, "organic" does NOT mean harmless, safe, good for you, or any of that stuff. if the stuff says its safe for animals, cool, but if it just says organic don't assume its safe. its often just used as a marketing buzzword. it also has several different meanings depending on context, it can mean a substance produced by living things, it can mean a compound containing carbon or a carbon-hydrogen bond, or it can mean a substance permitted in organic agriculture. it depends where something was made and what regulations they have on how commercial products are described and marketed.
    also small arthropods such as mites will survive being microwaved because of their tiny size relative to the microwaves wavelength.

      well yeah but I love him and hes like.. its pretty heavy fear, he gets panic attacks when there is a butterfly in his room so I always have to catch any insects or spiders and kick them out because in hispanic hell try to murder them, throw stuff at them etc.
      its nt like the fear "normal" people learn from their parents that just don't like crawlies, its a pretty massive phobia and bc I love him I wouldn't want to stress him out so much because I know he'd think y bout it all he time and that's not a nice way to live.

    • @a_lethe_ion
      @a_lethe_ion 7 років тому +16

      no, my boyfriend has a phobia as a result of pretty horrid abuse and I do really hope you'll never develop one. ALtho maybe you should, you could benefit from an experience that could teach you manners and empathy because you are clearly lacking both.
      also.. what are you trying to accomplish by this comment?
      By demeaning another human being you don't even know?
      do you need to feel strong and superior ?
      you feel your life lacking so you have to put other people down based on some arbitrary and, frankly said, often stupid idea of masculinity?
      Do you feel you so proud of yourself you need to advertise your lack of knowledge and, more important, lack of empathy?
      you know,
      Pathetic isn't the person who survived long years of abuse with some mental scars and bad coping, or the person making a comment about them,
      pathetic is reading a comment on youtube about a thing you clearly can't understand to then needlessly try to put down someone you perceive as weak for some reason I can't really understand-
      But i don't think I have to understand why you would think it appropriate to put down other human beings you don't even know.
      its a disgusting egotistical and very arrogant mindset and I pity you for having it altho I don't think you will understand why- maybe even by proud of it.
      its okay if you can't see the mental bars, but you should stop flinging shit at other people.

    Damp wood is molds favourite thing. You can, however, sterilise the wood, bake it at high temperatures will kill the spores. You can microwave the substrate to do a similar thing. You'd have to look up what times/temperatures as I don't know them off hand.

    • @biggingeryeti

      Oh, lol, you did that with the new one.

    • @ExoticsLair
      @ExoticsLair  7 років тому

      Part of the reason why I don't really like using wood.. but cork bark here is super expensive =/
      For my P. cambridgei I'm using a PVC pipe that I hot glued on moss. I might make more of those in the future, as they don't really mold.. but this one was urgent.

    • @ExoticsLair
      @ExoticsLair  7 років тому

      I think I'll just do light misting every now and then, and not have water saturated at the bottom.. because that's what I pretty much did - Poured water in to wet the substrate, Lol.

    • @biggingeryeti
      @biggingeryeti 7 років тому

      That's probably a good idea. It's always going to be an issue when you have spiders that like/live in humidity. But I understand, I would have to clean it up the second I found some mold!

    • @ExoticsLair
      @ExoticsLair  7 років тому

      Tell me about it!
      and the nightmares get even worse when you're living in a place that the temperature is a constant 86º-95º everyday all year round, with humidity getting up to 90º+ at times! Just asking for mold to happen.

  • @MDCCLXXVI1990
    @MDCCLXXVI1990 7 років тому +2

    Just keep it simple with moss from the petstore, corkbark and substrate and that problem is solved. And you can keep the substrate on the more dry side with a full waterdish all the time with good ventilation. Access to drinkingwater is much more important. But flooding the waterdish from time to time but now when it's in this size you can keep it a bit more drier. it will make your life much better and an better place for your beautiful t. Asian is by far my favorite and almost my whole colletion is asian species so I know what I'm talking about.

Like what happens when people don't buy them? What does petsmart do with em? Like it makes me sad to know no one wants them because they are "ugly" and misunderstood. Do you have the problem of ants entering your roach bins and killing them?

    • @ExoticsLair
      @ExoticsLair  7 років тому +5

      Nope..
      Is it happening to you?
      If it is you can put a layer of vaseline (petroleum jelly) on the bottom perimeter of the tub. That will prevent ants from climbing up. Also, make sure you take out any leftover food, especially the wet ones like fruits/vegetables. Those are what attracts ants. Ventilation is very important too, as when roaches die, they start to smell, attracting ants if the smell is trapped inside the tub. Another way ants would've gotten into the bin is through the egg crates - I usually toss egg crates into the microwave for 2 mins to kill any pests.

    • @rawegg8880
      @rawegg8880 7 років тому +1

      Hyraxuz Oh ok. I just put a layer of vaseline.. I have a wire top lid, and a few holes on the sides. is that enough ventilation?

    • @ExoticsLair
      @ExoticsLair  7 років тому +2

      What do you mean by a "wire top lid"?
      If you saw, I cut big holes on my lid and stuck on some aluminium mesh for ventilation.
      Is it something like that? if yes, you should be fine :P
      ants are as dangerous, if not more as mold. They can wipe out your entire colony within days. I'd recommend you to do a thorough clean of your roach bin, add new eggcrates (microwave them first to kill pests), and transfer back the roaches one-by-one (because if you shake them off from the old eggcrates the ants will fall into your bin again).

    instead of cleaning it with disinfection you can put it in boiling water for 10min after cleaning. this will kill all bacteria and fungy. no chemicals needed and no resistant bacteria/fungy inside (that survive the chemicals).
    ( I work in a microbiological lab )

    Could you/or someone who knows about their care please explain why T's are kept in such small containers?...she seems very big for such a small container.
    Some of the smaller spiders are kept in bigger square 'tanks'..I am not having a go..I really want to know?? Thanku (I am terrified of spiders..your videos are really helping to get rid of that fear 😊)

      Hey man I just watched farther into the video after I made my comment and I noticed something that you do and I would like to offer a friendly suggestion for your future cleanings... But I also want to let it be known that I'm not sure if you change the order of any of the clips in your video or if it was all in one continuous stream but you threw the would a way because it had mold spores on it then I noticed you were touching the container again would it not be smarter to throw everything away at once so you don't cross-contaminate with mold spores on your hand touching the clean container? Just a suggestion but I also again I'm not sure if the order of events are true to the timeline of your video
