  • Hi Guys,
    I decided to try and improve my wifi network at home by installing this Ubiquiti AP AC Pro. As an "Enterprise" device my expectations are pretty high ........ does it live up to them?

    The light can be disabled if choose to from the from the software configuration options. I use a single one of these access points in my house and I like to leave the light off. If you are using multiple of these devices in a well lit or high ceiling business environment the light is probably less intrusive and useful for trouble shooting.
    I find the thing pretty easy to configure though it has a lot of nice options if you dig around in the software a bit. You can even have each AP give a detailed scan of the RF environment and there is a beta supporting deep packet inspection. You can rename and track each client easily and all the settings are saved after the one click firmware updates. This is much better with large number of clients, file transfers, and game streaming via Steam or Nvidia Shield than my 5GHz 802.11AC Trendnet router. Overall i'm very pleased with device.

    Thanks for the video! Also, here in Austraya* each time you call it a "rooter" we think it's a device that roots (or screws/breaks) stuff. Its hilarious listening! We say router, phonetically like saying our or ow ;-)

      Its the opposite here, a "rowter" is a device you use to cut grooves in wood etc.

    I am agree with your points specially Ruckus-AP is expensive. Thanks for replying. Actually I am planning to buy 'UAP-AC-PRO' for a School and Each user having iPad; user will be used streaming tools/materials.
    iPad support both 5ghz wireless and 2.4ghz band. UAP-AC-PRO (or higher AP) is sufficient for 40-50 users per Access Point.
    Thanks.

    It woks on Linux and Windows. Has a Option as a Docker Image on a NAS. Than you have a Guest Network with Tokens for 8h to 1 Year acces.. Very Smart Device and it is not expensive if you see you make 1 installation and it works and works and works. We use ist with 4 AP with 4 VLAN Controlled Networks and Cover 400 m2 office with Steal Beton Walls. We use POE Switches, Gateway and the Cloud Key too, than it is a good Setup.

    My experience with the AP AC PRO is similar to yours. I am using it as an alternative access point with Technicolor TG582n router, which was provided free with my SSE Broadband package in the UK. Both speed and range are only marginally better when I place it by the side of the router. However, the ability to reposition it away from the router gives much better performance wrt range. I have placed on a window sill about two metres from the router. This enables it to reach a RING doorbell/camera (that previously required a powerline extender) and all of the bedrooms in the house. So this single access point will replace the original access point incorporated in the router plus two extenders. Using the Sweetspot App on my phone (that measures wifi speeds,within a network) I get a speed of about 170 Mbps on the 5 Ghz channel whilst holding my phone about one metre from the AP-PRO. This contrasts with an advertised speed of 1300 Mbps. 170 Mpbs is OK because I live in a remote country location and can only get 20Mbps download speed through a phone line. But, suppose I transferred to Virgin, who advertise a cable download speed of 213 Mbps. Would the Ac-Pro up its game? Or, maybe I am using the wrong ethernet cable. I am currently using 5e. It's fun experimenting and so I shall carry on.

      Using the same app I get around 800 Mbps 1m from my WAP, so it sounds like you have an issue somewhere, good luck tracking it down! AM

      @@AmoebaMan Well that is interesting. I need to investigate.

    • @pe51ter
      @pe51ter 3 роки тому

      @@AmoebaManI found a unify document that discussed issues that could limit speed, one of which was cables. I had connected my AC-PRO with brand new cat5e cables, except the cable from the poe injector to the unit. This was a very old 5e cable that came with a router i used about 15 years ago: I used this because the length was perfect for my needs. I replaced it with a brand new, but shorter, cable and the speed rose to 295 Mbps a metre from the AP. The phone that I was using has an LTE cat 6, which has a max download speed of 301. So, I am now assuming that I have reached the max capability of the phone. My wife owns a phone with LTE cat 12 capability (max download of 603), so I'll try her phone next.

      Sorry I don't know much about Ruckus AP's other than they appear to be very expensive, I can't comment on commercial /industrial applications but from my perspective I can't imagine why any home user would spend more than the cost of a Ubiquiti unless they have specific /unusual requirements. My AP AC Pro has been absolutely flawless in performance and reliability, so if you want an 11ac WAP why spend any more? AM

    I want to install the UAP-AC-PRO in my home as well and Im a bit worried about the transmission power and the radiation it emits.
    I dont have a big house its about 80Meter (262.467f) and I was just wondering if the 22dbm transmission power is not too much for a home? I'm planning on installing on the on ceiling which is 2.2M height (6.8f).
    I'm just worrying if the radiation is not too strong for a small house?
    Thank you,

      Hi Jack, not an area I am very knowledgeable - the only thing I know is that the power is regulated so that most wifi access points have very similar power (and range) capability in my experience.(w.wol.ph/2015/08/28/maximum-wifi-transmission-power-country/). My guess is that wifi is probably lower radiation than other home devices as they are low voltage and limited range devices but I am not expert enough to give you a proper answer. AM

    • @AmoebaMan
      @AmoebaMan  6 років тому

      Hi NBSTL68, yes still performing very well and with no issues, the passthrough port serves as a bridged interface between main / secondary Ethernet port - many of the Ubiquiti device passthrough ports are data only and not PoE passthrough, check your device as there are a couple of exceptions that will also pass power. Those cables aren't "high duty". They are shielded(FTP). Assuming your entire cable network is connected to earth. that shield will remove interference. So if it doesnt get connected to earth, one place or another. A standard CAT6 cable would be good enough.

      @AmoebaMan  3 роки тому

      Have a look at 'High density scenarios' in this datasheet, it compares the AC PRO with the HD version. The maximum theoretical number of clients is 125 but less than 70 is recommended. The document also states that 2.4g is more limiting than 5g in this regard. dl.ubnt.com/datasheets/unifi/UniFi_UAP-AC-HD_DS.pdf AM

      Also another question is since this is just an access point and not a router: If the current router can accommodate up to 10 wifi devices, will this access point be limited to 10 wifi devices as well? If not, to how many?

    • @AmoebaMan
      @AmoebaMan  7 років тому

      Thanks! I have found its hard to make predictions on range of WAP's becuase so much depends on positioning and construction of the building and any obstacles. This AP has similar range to the other 11ac AP's I have tested in my home. The 5Ghz coverage is limited but the 2.4Ghz will cover my entire house - if you are lucky enough to be able to centrally locate the AP I think one could cover a normal house adequately. Mine is not located centrally as my office is on the side of the house so I use a second AP to provide higher speeds at the opposite end of the house even though it is still possible to connect to the Ubiquiti. Ultimately in the UK (and other countries) broadcast power is limited by legislation (I think its 20dB), which probably explains why decent AP's of similar spec seem to perform very much the same from a range point of view. GL!

    • @AmoebaMan
      @AmoebaMan  7 років тому

      This device is not limited to 10 devices and easily copes with a lot more than that, most routers are also not limited to 10 clients. In your case you would need to check whether its your existing router wireless limitation or some other factor in your router. Some types of limitation could affect your whole network e.g. DHCP - this would be unusual / odd though. You need to have a look at your manual to be sure, or give it a try! AM

    • @ThinkTankTVPH

      Thanks for all this data! I am now placing an order through Amazon for this AP. With that being said do you have an affiliate link I can click onto so that you can get some kind of credit for your insight that made me pull the trigger?
      Regarding my existing modem/router combo, it is unfortunate that it has a set limit of 10 clients and when they gave it to me it did not come with a manual. Yes there methods to keep you blinded is somewhat annoying. I currently have more than 20 home automation devices that randomly needs to be reconfigured due to the limitations. The most logical option is to get a separate single fiber optic modem (converter), a separate router, and this AP to fulfill my needs. Sadly though, my ISP is adamant to relinquish any foresight as to what 3rd party options that can be optimal with my internet service. Golden handcuffs, ugh. They did assure me that if I was to buy this AP or any AP for that matter and attach it to the existing modem/router combo, my needs will be all checked out. I am highly suspicious of bottlenecking with that suggestion hehe... I do hope though my future purchase of a TRENDnet 4-port Broadband Router TW100-S4W1CA, TRENDnet Media Converter TFC-1000MGB and this AP will do the trick. If not, I'll have to go through a gruesome period of trial and error.

    • @AmoebaMan
      @AmoebaMan  7 років тому

      I hope it all works out for you, I can't help noticing the TRENDnet router you linked only has 100 Mbps network so it wouldnt be a natural choice for "normal" home LAN, A router with Gb network would make devices on your LAN go much faster (theoretically 10x) and they are not expensive unless you have no choice or a specific reason for choosing it
      Don't worry about affiliate link or whatever, I just do this for fun, I'll settle for a thunbs up! AM

    Does the software you're running only need to be installed to configure the device? Or does it have to be constantly running on your network in order for the device to work?

    • @AmoebaMan
      @AmoebaMan  7 років тому

      Hi Matthew, the WAP operates independently, you don't need to run the software or have a PC running at all unless you want to access the WAP's WebUI. So once you have set up your WAP the Unifi software is not required unless you want to log back in to change your configuration.

      Hi km88ful, the later stages of this video do show the unit in operation, I haven't had any of the issues you describe. My unit typically has a minimum of 8 clients and is frequently streaming two HD video feeds from my security cameras. I haven't measured the thoughput but have not encountered any issues and the range is comparable to my other WAP's. I have certainly never had a crash, sorry you are encountering problems - do you have a faulty unit? AM

    • @AmoebaMan
      @AmoebaMan  7 років тому

      Hi Peter, you will need to run CAT 6 cable to the WAP from your network. The maximum theoretical cable length with the POE injector is 100m which should be plenty for most people. There are alternatives such as using homeplug (you can get these adapters with PoE injector built in) which would work, to be honest though I am not a huge fan of HomePlug myself - although is does work it is no substitute for a CAT6 cable. Are you sure you need the WAP to be in your room? Remember the range on this device is pretty decent so you could probably locate somewhere convenient and still get a strong connection with wireless devices within a reasonable distance. AM

      FYI if you have 2 or more (and you don't need the PRO model, the LITE or the LR will work just as well) associated with the same controller they will automatically create a wireless bridge though you speeds will be cut in half.

    Kinda weirded out with the constant "smart" reference that seems to make no sense lol. How does PoE make something "smart"? It's just a power delivery solution... Nothing" smart" about it. Nor does it state anywhere that it is a "smart device"... It's just a really nice router with lots of customization options.

      Maybe hinting that the antenna broadcast pattern is designed for ceiling mount (think a donuts shape) where it goes mostly out and a bit down. On the wall that means your going a bit away from the wall, a bit behind the wall but mostly up/down and along the wall with signal power.

    • @AmoebaMan
      @AmoebaMan  7 років тому

      Sure, you are absolutely righ, the "optimal" mounting for this WAP is definitely ceiling mounted as the coverage is considered "doughnut shaped" < UK doughnut spelling ftw :) >
      When I tested my device I got the same coverage (and speed) in my house regardless of orientation but you are right to point out that for some people it might make a difference. I used it for quite a lot of time sat on a desk. I also really like the IKEA light fitting mod which is very clever and I might do one day :
