i can honestly say i took this review and showed it to my boss (the network admin) and based on the review we went and grabbed 3 of them for about 800$ USD and dude they freaking rock, we have 1000 dollar AP's that suck compared to the features speed range etc that these points can give. its so nice to use three of these to cover a 5000 sqft manufacturing space + lab and a 2000 sqft office all on the same network. even nicer that we can manage all the points from a single control software!
Who knew almost 7 years later, we would find out Wendel is arguably a plumber because he collects toilet lids.

I'd expect Linus to "skip" at least 1 model (depending on how often they release ofc.) given the enterprise nature
if you don't have them yet (and are looking to spend money on better wifi): get them, if you already have them: do you have complaints? [no: why spend more money? yes: is it a range issue? (yes: just get an extra to hook up, no: could a new device even fix it? (yes: try?) )]
I too would like to see an update. We know he didnt want to replace the routers every 2 years, but he did mention the firmware upgrade in the future was supposed to enable the seemless hand off. Did that happen? How has the "living with" the routers been over 2 years? Any hiccups? I am generally interested in this product and am considering putting this in my place if all has been a dream to live with.

Update time, please! There have been changes with IEEE 802.?? allowing "true" zero hand off. This is fantastic but I'm not seeing any of the business grade devices clearly offering this. All I see out there is brands like Google WiFi and eero offering it for home users.

Juan Castillo My excuse is that I work in an OFFICE as indicated by my actual post. If someone has a tablet or laptop connected to our wifi, they don't want to have to go back into their network settings and re-connect to a new access point if they go from one area to another, HENCE me saying that we were using the UAP pro instead of the one shown in this review.
FastRedPonyCar Zero handoff requires the APs be on the SAME CHANNEL and this is not a good idea! You save perhaps 50ms at most and isn't worth it.

I've had ONE Apple Airport Extreme for the last four or five years, and it has been awesome: it has a nice long range (about 10m for a strong signal), it has a USB port for sharing printers, hard drives and the like, and it was SUPER easy to set up, even with the PC I had back then. Just like Steve Jobs used to say: "it just works".

Same here. I bought one after getting tired of crappy firmware by standard router manufacturers. I also got tired of messing around with DDWRT. I figure that if you are going to release a product, all aspects of it should be solid.
I haven't had a single issue with the Apple Extreme..I haven't even messed around with it after setting it up once when I first got it.
I have one as well defiantly the best I've tried but if there's a better one someone please tell me I don't like apple so I will be happy to get rid of it when theres a better one.

I have been working with other forms of ubiquity hardware to experiment with an approach to deploy wireless access for students iPads over an entire small town. It hasn't been perfect, but I am very impressed with ubiquiti so far.
We've got a Cisco RV-220W (probably 3 or 4 years old now) it's classified as "Small Business". I had one issue with the power supply and the whole unit was replaced, which meant i had to setup the network again. Cisco customer support helped me out with the whole thing (They troubleshooted and told me my ISP was at fault) and even followed up with email to make sure everything is fine again. I have never been more surprised with a company's willingness to help out before.
Point of my comment is, stuff consumer grade electronics. We paid $320ish iirc for it and before that we had 3 $80ish dollar routers that sucked/broke. This one has lifetime warranty and is super reliable.
Even in computer and networking hardware it is very evident that you get what you pay for.
I been using the newer version of these for work. Been set up in multiple locations now and we hardly ever hear from them anymore. Works wonders.
We install Ubiquiti products at work for our customers. They are really really really good products. If anyone is on the fence about getting some of their products just go ahead and dive in. You won't be disappointed.
I found this video looking at using them myself. Got an installation coming up starting with 42 Ap's with further expansion to 200 within the next 12-18months. Any experience with the Management controller software?

I have used Ubiquiti AP's (the company behind unifi) for years and started using the unifi AP's two years ago. I really like them and the centraliced controll systems. It even works if the control software stops. Only thing is that guest portal and zero handoff is disabled. I have had problems with configuring zero handoff but have had a greate experience with these AP's.
To all non tech-savvy people: An access point is NOT the same as what you would call a wireless router. It merely is an access point. This connects to another switch and/or router, and only provides wireless devices access to said switch/router. This won't DHCP, it won't do NAT (More commonly PAT for home users) and it can't connect to the internet alone.
Do you know of its speeds in relation to dedicated connections. I remember a while back watching a video of Linus highlighting the pains of slow WiFi while comparing it to other solutions such as good old dedicated or phone line connections. Is this better or at least close?

yes, it means it's very fast, "1300mbps" which really means ~600 reliable mbps through walls and such. watch the video. he uses nvidia game streaming and it's reliable until you cross access points....not good.
still not as fast as 1gbps baseT over ethernet. reliable ~990mbit/s on my router wired. i have the rt n66u. i get ~250mbit/s over wifi and its rated for 450. like linus said, consumer wifi sucks.

this anandtech article mentions asrock bragging about a 4t4r consumer "gaming" router to be unveiled at computex next month. this would be 1733 theoretical mbps, which is one stream, 433mbit/s, more than the router linus reviewed in the video. so faster router "platforms" are coming in a few months.

I have been using this AP for a couple of years. It is amazing. I have a single unit placed in the middle of the house on the first floor. It covers all almost 2500 sq ft. I can stream 1080p 7.1 video to my new Apple TV on the second floor with zero issues.
It seems they've redesigned these and among the differences is a drastically lower price. Newegg seems to be selling their pro version for $130. I'd love to see an update to this and to see if the quality holds up with their latest line.
between 3 different clients of mine, I have set up total of 6 unifi APs over a year ago and they have had ZERO complaints and awesome performance. I love ubiquiti!
Using 15$ TP-Link router for 2 years now. I download 1GB files in less than 5 minutes. Internal networking is just fine too. i am transferring files between wifi linked computers at almost 40 MB/s. Last year a lightning struck the distribution box and killed it's WAN port, but i rooted it with DDWRT and assigned one of the other switch ports as WAN. Still functions quite good, also the rage is 30m at >30Mbit transfer rates through 2 brick walls. It covers my whole house and about 10m radius around it. At the side with the room the router is in the range outside is almost 50m (low quality though but the other 50 routers in rage must have some negative effect on it...)
You're lucky man, I have a $100 d-link and man it is crap, 1mbps through 2 plaster walls, only like 10m direct distance.
Raisin Toast Go in the settings and change region to Bulgaria. Check if you have transmission power setting for your wifi. Turn it up as far as it can go. Hide your SSID and unlock your network. If someone wants to hack it he will even through WPA2. Hiding your SSID will deter everyday freeloaders. Removing the encryption will speed up the connection considerably.
Eviltech No, you should not remove encryption. WPA2 will almost certainly not be hacked if you use a strong password. Hiding your SSID is next to useless, it it trivial to uncover. A lack of encryption is also leaving your traffic open to interception, even if someone doesn't know the SSID.
Chris A So what? It's not like i use online shopping or anything like that. I am just an unimportant bloke. If someone hacks my wifi it would be to use my internet and i don't mind. If they misuse it i just ban their mac address and they quit it. Most laptops and phones have permanent wifi mac addresses these days. The router itself has a pretty beefy 12 symbol pass.

I work in the corporate enviroment with Drytek's Vigor 2960. this is the first time I came across high grade product like this and I have to say it is a treat. a part of me wants to save up and set it up in my house for no other reason than the pleasure of working with that kind of hardware.

My school uses these in all the lecture halls, library, commons, etc. And they are amazing. I can walk across campus and never loose WiFi access even while outside the buildings. I'm debating getting one for home now.

It's the way forward. Our router is in the living room downstairs and my PC is upstairs, we just wired it up through the house (even with the risk of tripping over it and killing yourself it's worth it!).

Bought a UniFi AP AC LR and love it. It is installed in the middle of my 1500 sq.ft house and covers all the way to the street, and backyard.

I installed Ubiquiti UniFi access points at an astronomical observatory in San Diego a couple of years back. They replaced a bunch of WRT-54g's running dd-wrt - the difference was *astounding*. It was all well worth the cost and significantly easier to maintain.
I miss content like this need to do more of this kinda stuff again , kill channel super fun and reallocate the budget to this kinda stuff
I've been using the UniFi N Access Point at my house and it's rock solid. I have not had any issues since installing it about a year ago. I can connect well over 20 clients to the device without any issues (they claim 100).
As soon as i heard 300 dollars immediately stopped the video am now writing this comment then closing the video.
What about all the other stuff like Titan graphic card and a lot of other high end stuff do you not Watch them either?

I've used these and other Ubiquiti products for a while now and I have never had a problem. Ubiquiti also makes a cheaper version that cost around $100 with the same features and software and they also works great.
My old 50 bucks D-link is still chugging along after like 7 years, crappy old b/g router but the signal is great and the thing has been on 24/7 most of the time with nearly no signal drop. I've only recently started thinking about replacing it with a router+Apple Airport(s) for better range and time machine backup.

k ly Haven't done it, but my friggin' neighbors have filled all 2.4GHz channels and my range has decreased tremendously, plus I now have horrible packet loss between my PC and the router :( I now desperately need a 5GHz router ASAP. Oh well, here I come Amazon.
k ly It's been a year and I've switched to a single ASUS dsl-n55u mounted on the ceiling and a I now have 100mb/s+ nearly everywhere in the house and 0 complaints. It was cheap and easy to set up :)

Moved to Ubiquiti gear about 6 months ago, and I will NEVER go back. I’ve been setting up deployments for other people just because of how much I love the experience of working with this brand.
My consumer-grade wireless router is crap. A lot of them are, honestly, which is why when I bought my house, I bought a 24-port switch and wired up every single room with multiple ports. Except for the two bathrooms, obviously. I'm all about using wired over wireless.
In fact, when it comes to my phone, I get more reliable connection inside my house from my cellular network than I get from the wireless router I have.
That being said, I'm not sure I want to pay $600 for a pair of wireless AP to ensure good coverage in my house. Then again, if I can charge my friends and family for guest access...

I've had a linksys e3000 for 4 or so years now and it did a fine job providing signal from the basement to the first and second floors. It's lacking some advanced features but you still get the implemented switch for any hardware you want to wire to.
Why not just build your own router with pfsense if you're unhappy with all the other consumer options?
This is a wireless access point (a wireless switch in essence) A pfSense router works better as a central router and is difficult to have a ton of them around offices when then take up so much space.
I did this, but it still doesn't cover the WiFi problem, as pfSense is JUST a router. You'd then still need an AP to go with it, which is where ubiquiti come in and save the day
Thank you so much, I was so tired of getting disconnected all the time for no reason. Now we have incredible wifi for $189. It's worth every single penny. I was afraid it would be very hard to configure but it wasn't that hard: just install java, download the software, create an account, log in and that's it.
I'm so happy to not hear the children being upset because their show stopped when I was working (coronavirus, the joys of working at home).

Interesting! I'm fed up with crap WiFi too! My apartment isn't very large at all but the WiFi performance is all over the place, sometimes it works just fine and the next second it crawls to a halt! Consumer WiFi routers just does not work, I've used several of them now and they are all junk!
+Procrastinator7 try a Ubiquiti Picostation M2 or M5. There cheap and will blow your mind on distance. One covers our entire football field and bleachers.

Dumb question... but is your wifi secured? Also, since you life in an appartment, it probably has only one internet cable going to the whole building, which is then split up inside the building delivering crap speeds to everyone. Crap internet + every one in complex through one cable + unsecured wifi = terrible experience.
Anything less than 20mbps is crap internet and will frusterate you.

There is nothing wrong with the connection as such, I only use WiFi for my laptop, my stationary is using a cable and it works flawlessly. I have a 100 Mbit line and I have no problems reaching that.

I too was fed up with the shenanigans my wifi routers kept pulling. Eventually I just grabbed a drill, made a few holes in the floors and walls and ran UTP through them. Good old fashioned copper works great! The 4 port gigabit interface on my wifi router is more than sufficient for this task even.
Hi Linus and crew. Have you received the official firmware upgrade for zero handoff with regards to the Ubiquiti UniFi AC Wireless Access Point?
We have deployed the N extended range version of these in a few business clients and a couple home clients. Rock solid, easy to deploy, and quite a lot cheaper than the previous go-to Sonicwall/sonicpoint setups.

I've been using ubiquity gear since their bullet radio came out and have never been disappointed. Consumer wifi equipment is out classed by them. Sad example of this was when my home air router died due to gravity.. so we tuned the wifi on in the dsl modem. My bullet AP in the barn has better coverage in the house than the dsl router.. to replace the air router I now have an old bullet radio with a modest 3dbi antenna and 100mw. (The air router was 1000mw output) Thanks Linus for getting the word out for Ubiquity. ..it might scare you how far your wifi signal is going from your home now.

+Howtobasic's brother Not at all. Interference from the environment alone is enough to turn me off. Beyond that I shouldn't have to get numerous hotspots to get signal everywhere. I simply ran ethernet to any room in need in the walls from the source. No signal degredation anywhere.
+Skylord12345 I live in Florida. Every house has a metal roof and concrete walls that helps to scatter the signal so even a high end router does little. Beyond that I in fact do have file transfers I regularly do as well as online gaming.
I've been working with wireless for what feels like about 10 years - it's not cluelessness on my end, it simply fails to meet my standards in every way.
Just saw your video after buying an Edge Router X SFP and a single Unifi AP. Total cost: $129. Certainly more in line with what I'm expecting. We shall see if the single AP covers my house well enough. A friend (with a larger home) built out with a single AP and was fine. Looking forward to getting everything wired up over the holiday break! Thanks for the great review!
Here in the Netherlands people bitch and complain about spending 50 bucks for a B-brand, let alone spend 200 - 300 for something like this xD Cheapskates really. I myself run cables, nothing so far beats cables :)

Glen Browne sick burn dude. Crazy little thing called 4G and decent bundle size ;) Also, you don't need much of a connection to experience fairly smooth browsing on a mobile device. Cable to living room, cheap access point, cable moves on to pc.
ThaTyger It's off your network dude and costs you more money. And you mention a cheap access point which is a contradiction to what you said about cabling everything, and a complete contradiction to this youtube review! Get your story straight...
browneaction the story is straight. PC's and laptops you use for heavy lifting you connect with a cable. Devices that can't be connected with a cable (in my case cell phones because I don't have a tablet) have to be connected with wifi but they don't use that much data and they don't need that incredibly stable connections so it's less off a problem if you cheap out. If you insist that you want to have everything wireless you are going to have to pay the price for it.
ThaTyger so when ever you change room you have to plug in again? you pay for broadband and 4g? that seems useful... and legit. why don't you just put a basic wap next to your data points? or do you like paying for both wifi and data? sorry for interrupting your weird pointless bill paying
For home use, I bought the TP-Link Archer C8 Wireless AC router. It is awesome! Great range, usb 3.0 hard drive storage, USB 2.0 for printer, 4x Gigabit ethernet and great user interface. I can do guest networking (and have different passwords). I believe I can even to FTP server, but I have not set it up.
It's $150 bucks and I'm very pleased so far. I have not tested wireless AC transfer speeds yet.

Today I sent in a ticket for that same ASUS router (interference problem) that Linus describes as his previous one to this solution. I've got to say, I wasn't even aware a solution like this existed for us! Once this thing finally kicks the bucket I'll be looking into the this sort of thing!

What you should do is build a computer inti a router. And also make a wifi card with high gain antanas instead of using someone elses systems. And talk about that. Cause then theres no limit for the processors. Nic cards. And so on.

Steven Burden I have my own router and then bought a Ubiquiti AP (~$60). SOOOOOO much better WiFi and expandable.
The Apple Airport is another really good option. Mine's 4 years old, easy to set up, really easy to manage and has some really great advanced options available, like access control to increase security with people able to get onto the wifi, has decent range/speed. Every time I need to perform maintenance, or adjust something, I just use the utility on my phone.

Houses in Holland are generally more compact, so u basically have router reception in ur house. Exceptions may be if u have a third floor. So i dont rlly see the need for something like this.
I do like the fact that these companies are rethinking the way access points should be setup. I hope this tech will go places, and especially down in price...

I work for for ISP(as a network administrator), we use it all the time, it`s very good and stable. Only bad thing about it, is that you need to have virtual server on local mashine, so you can manage it.

you can buy a wifi usb stick and with some software you can have a wifi..
My point is that I would never use my desktop over wifi for gaming. Heck, I even have my ps3 and xbox 360 hardwired. Never game over wifi if possible. I only use wifi for casual browsing, meaning a $50 router gets the job done for me.
GOPACKERSJT This isn;t for us that are happy with normal products. This is for the super geeks that think they need the highest tech everything. Prime example is a person that needs a remote control on their wrist for their phone in their pocket.
Not wishing to fish wires through my house, I bought a cheap Netgear R6100 and a pair of Linksys Powerline units. I configured R6100 as an access point and connected it to the Powerline unit 75 feet away. I now get a strong signal everywhere in my house and the slowest speed is 50 Mbps ( I have fiber to the house). 50 Mbps and strong signal is just fine for everything I do. I speent less than 100 usd on he additions.
Instead of buying this run a lot of Ethernet cords all around your house then take all of your wireless devices/parts and throw them through a window.
That includes your phone.

Yeah, I've been running Ethernet for about a year. Works a billion times better than wireless for me, no connection breaks.
OMG just got this part for my computer (Asus PCE-AC68 802.11a/b/g/n/ac PCI-Express x1) there may actually be hope for wireless just need to find a way to plug it into my cell phone :)

I've deployed about 25 of these AP's at a School and they work awesome management is easy. And setup is a breeze. Really awesome Hardware !!!

Mikrotik is solid for routers and their firewall, but not so good with wireless. Tried it once.....and nope. Ubiquity Unifi APs rock!
I'm a network administrator and run my own business. Ubiquiti is the only wireless product I install at any of my clients locations. I have had clients running Ubiquiti Unifi models ever since they were first released and have never had any issues with them whatsoever. They are just true workhorses. I will never ever again purchase non enterprise wifi units. The Unifi AP Pro is only $300 (plus P&H) here in Melbourne, Australia and to many of my clients that really is only the price of a matchbox. The amount of callouts I have had to new clients just due to WIFI issues is outstanding. I have literally come to the point that when they have any WIFI issues whatsoever I just change their product over to Ubiquiti. It saves them and me from wasting so much time and significantly decreases headaches. So if you want a professional opinion I highly recommend any of their products.

I actually use the never version of this accesspoints. I currently use 3 Ubiquiti UniFi AP AC Lite's in my house, works like a charm! Fast reliable strong WiFi everywhere!

Just got a UAP-AC-PRO. My property is 1 acre large and it still manages to somehow get outside it with dank speeds. All that from the basement.
I have a ubiquity unifi AP unit, it is cost effective, expandable, reliable and it has great software with it. It is commercial grade so definitely will perform for a long time.
A mate who had set up his works wireless network with them put me onto them and we are still mates so there you go

Zero Handoff is 50/50 to my knowledge - It works well for some and not for others. Regardless, these devices would need the UniFi Controller to utilise it.
I am fortunate to live in a small place in which the provided Comcast "router" will suffice, but I'm glad to know this option is out there if my needs ever increase. Thanks Linus!

+Samuël Tremblay It really really depends on where you live. In Texas homes are way cheaper, and that size isn't nearly expensive as it is here in Illinois or apparently in Canada.

+freeze1305 Really depends on where you're from. My parents live out in the country in South Carolina in a 4,000 sq ft home and it wasn't that expensive to build. In a big city it would be well over a million, but out in the middle of nowhere, the land is dirt cheap.
After installing Ubiquiti and Mikrotik for that past 5 years, I've never had a single failure in hundreds of installations.

Well we bought our B/G Wireless Access Point over 5 years ago. It's still working and good. Slow but does the job of youtube and web browsing.

Ive had one for few years now. Put one on 2nd floor of 3 story house and it covers it all without a problem. You can walk out into the street and its covered as well.
Wireless is absolute shit. But there are companies and people making it equivalent to stinky dung, Which is better. My current wireless router is 802.11 g. I hate it. Damn you at&t u-verse. I've used 802.11 n and id give anything to go back to that holy crap
go grab one of these and ask for a basic DSL modem with a few gigabit lan ports connect this with the POE injector and you will go from G to AC in a hurry
Been using AirPort Extreme routers for the last 4 years and they have been great. Consistent, fast and reliable. Can't think of any major downsides to them. Need an extra one though that we use as a bridge because our house is really long and has three floors.

***** Still not really downsides as you use the airport app for admin from anywhere and as far as SPI goes its been no issues at all without it. In a different environment maybe that would be more of an issue, but for home use still not really an issue.
No IPv6 over PPPoE support (only DHCP and 6to4 Tunnel assignment). My ISP upgraded us and the Airport Extreme I've been using for like 4 years and been very very satisfied with didn't support it.

I have a N750 Belkin router that costs $80 and it works almost flawlessly. i've been using it for over a year and it's just great. Before that, I had another Belkin router which would randomly disconnect, then refuse to reconnect. The only solution would be to reset the router. This router works great. In the last year, I had to restart it just 3 times or so.

For all people talking about "It's too expensive" or "I have a 40 bucks wireless router and it's fine", well, this is a ENTERPRISE solution. 30 or more client at the same time, stable signal, advanced configuration, are the needs for a office, not for home.
My ac pro AP is stronger then my next door neighbors AP when I'm inside his house. Laughable!
Remember though that stronger signal does NOT necessarily mean better performance. In fact I usually find that when copying a file to my laptop and moving around that the performance if often better with a slightly weaker signal.
Rule of thumb is WiFi performs best with a -60dB SNR. Any better and you start to get interference from the signal actually being too strong.
Alex Atkin i actually just tested that out. standing right at my wifi router with -30 db i get average 230mbps and at - 55 db i get 239mbps. seems your right afterall. but its not really wnoigh to seriously have much affect it seems in my case.
Senrab Nala You also have to consider MIMO (where its relying on getting a signal from several antennas to boost the bandwidth) and particularly obstructions that can block and deflect the signal. So you can get a strong signal but the bits are arriving all jumbled up.
The further away you get, the more you cannot trust that the signal strength is any indication of signal quality. But I have seen reports of having a laptop on the same desk as the router causing no connectivity at all due to too-much signal overpowering the amplifiers in the client. :/
Ubiquiti even have an automatic signal power feature in their stuff that targets 66dB and drops the transmit power accordingly.

Well usually WiFi will be faster than your Internet. I use 802.11ac and copy video files around sometimes, then you REALLY see a difference.
I never let go of my old routers, I repurpose them. Right now all 3 of my old N routers are being used as access points, with a pfSense machine doing the routing. I also plan on setting up a WRT54G in a way that I can have it inside and have its antennas outside in the backyard.

routerOS is so feature rich that it really is a bargain for the price paid, though it does come with some bugs to make up for it.

I work for a MSP as an onsite tech and I came across these access points and I can say enough good things about them. They are easy to manage onsite and remote and they are for all consumers. I have two at my house and countless out in our networks. Just for those out there that think that this is a steep price, they also have more basic models for around $70-$90. Just wanted to give you a shout out as this Unifi system, has been hands down the best wireless system that I have come across.

I just put my DIR-655 out to pasture. I'd had it since before wireless-n was even a finalized spec. I upgraded to an Asus AC68U and so far I haven't had one bit of trouble with it. Also, having a UI on the router that looks like it was made this side of the 90's is nice as well.

kwxj61b I have to say i agree. I have had the same router for years now. and my signal does not degrade that much. the sad part is even with this you are not going to get massive speeds. it just seems like a waste of money.
I've only paid for 2 routers in 10 years. First was a cisco small business router along with a wireless AP.. and once that died.. I got the ASUS one you put up. Love them both. I never go cheap on my networking equipment.
