  • Lanolin the Sheep is the breakout new star of the Sonic series. From slowly transitioning from her background character beginnings in the second issue of the IDW Sonic comics, to now having a larger major role as the leader of the Diamond Cutters, Lanolin has been in the midst of...controversy? So in an effort to explain why everybody is wrong and I'm right, I'll explain why I love Lanolin!

@KamyKam I agree with just about everything, but Lanolin enforcing the rules in the race was NOT a bad moment. Referees are supposed to be unbiased. There's no room for sympathy. If you break the rules, whether intentional or not, you get disqualified. And you have to remember that just because Sonic and his team's gear malfunction doesn't mean that the race stops. Every one of the racers is still going, and Lanolin does not have time to listen to what Sonic has to say. She has to get back on track and enforce the rules so no more accidents happen.

@videogollumer that's a job for a medical team that an official event should have. Once again, she has to keep moving. It's not that she doesn't care it's that she doesn't have time. If there was an injury, the medical team could handle it

@videogollumer When the field is a TRACK, the referee has to keep moving. It's not like a football field where everything takes place in one area. Racers are constantly moving forward to different places. When Lanolin stopped to give the penalty , the medical team should have been right there with her so she could keep going . No one was hurt anyway. If anything, it should have been up to the organizers to make sure there were multiple referees.

Lanolin looks to be a character who takes things seriously and doesn't shy away from putting a lot of pressure to herself. Within the confines of the story, she didn't have to, nobody is forcing her to do this ; she chose this path of her own volition to ensure proper benefits to everyone.
However, at the rate she's going, she might keep piling on more and more pressure onto herself - simultaneously, shutting off her sense of self - until she can't keep doing it anymore. Things do not bode well for her well-being in the next issues if she keeps going that way...

I do love how inherently *flawed* she is as a leader. I've been reading the current arc, but I am more invested in her arc to see how her stubborn 'horse with blinders' view is gonna hit her hard in the end. I don't hate her, but she does need to suffer. Only through failure can she reflect and hopefully grow as a character.

Something i hope we see is more of her and her mothers relationship, she seems to be a bit over bearing on Lanolin, which would explain her more Serious attitude, and the pressure to succeed seems to be weighing heavier and heavier, i think an interesting resolution to her arc would be her realizing she doesnt need to be the leader, and maybe Whisper should lead? I think the symbolism of Whisper being the leader of a new diamond cutter team could work.

As a Tangle fan I can both completely agree with loving Lanolin, and outright despising her at the same time. A lot of the flaws she shows with her leadership and how she treats others around her leave a want to see her face repercussions or karma. Her constantly belittling Sonic & Tangle’s approach to missions despite the seniority and experience, and practically shattering Whisper’s confidence with the Duo situation have left me vehemently angry with the sheep, but in the end that makes her a more compelling character in the story.
I’m interested whether the writers will go in the direction of fixing her mistakes, or staying stubborn to the end.

The only reason i can think people dislike her is because they know Duo and the Phantom Riders true identities and are surprised when she acts like she doesn't (because she doesn't).
From a character writing perspective, she's certainly interesting. Is interesting that we first see the "bossy" character before she has power, and she's exceptionally obedient, that's just how she expects the heirarchy to work, not that she's got an ego

After the recent volume. It's hard for me to gain an interest towards Lanolin. I get she is meant to be a flawed character. But her actions are having heavy consequences. She is meant to be the leader of the new Diamond Cutters yet she isn't being analytical and reasonable. There are lives being risked and she is jumping to conclusions without hearing anyone out. She would rather take Duo's word than take Whisper's advice because Whisper lacked proof. She gets easily frustrated and sticks to the rules way too hard to the point where it gets out of control and action from outside needs to intervene. As of right now. I am much more invested in Surge's and Kit's arc

Lanolin is someone who takes things far more seriously than the rest of the cast. They’ve been doing this so long, they’ve learned to roll with it and adapt. Lanolin is still learning, and trying to be what a she believes a hero *should* be. She takes any mistake, no matter how small, as a full failure without considering outside factors. That the ones involved are the ones at fault. Like she had a perfect view on the heroes, but getting to know them, realizes that they aren’t quite what they thought. It would explain a bit why she took more Duo’s side than the others. He’s someone new like her, so she sympathizes more and disregards the heroes. But again, Lanolin is still learning, and she also takes her own failures very hard. She just froze when she inadvertently destroyed part of the track and endangered the racers. I feel like that the end of this arc, she will learn not to be so strict, to listen to others.
I did think Lanolin was like Sally in issue #56, mostly as a joke. The big difference I see between them is Lanolin is more serous. While Sally was hard working and bossy at times, she has a sense of humor as well. Lanolin lost patience with Tangle just playing paddleball. No disrespect to either of them, just saying how I see them different. I did wonder if there was going to be more antagonistic role at first, but that was because of some of how she was drawn and before we actually explored her personality.

to me Lanolin is a reminder people will have their own personal demons they are dealing with and sometimes we need to stop and think if they need help or try to talk reason with them overwise they can end up getting lost by their own demons despite not wanting to admit their own beast they are tyring to settle

Another thing with Lanolin is that she really doesn't have any friends. Like listen first, her relantionship with Whisper and Tangle is more of acquaintances instead of friends, she even tells Silver they are soldiers, which is wrong because the Restoration isn't the military, they help people in need, even they can leave and still help( as Amy said to Surge)Lanolin is different with Duo tho,it seems he understands her, Duo is innocent and acts like a good friend to her, agreeing in her decisions and saying that it is good that she guides them. Second, note how Tangle doesn't tell her about the phantom rider identity, Lanolin wouldn't take well the situation and I don't think explaining to her would make a difference and now it doesn't look like a team anymore, it is now a group of duos with a traitor in the inside. She will improve, as they say "Live and Learn"

I think Lanolin just wants to keep everyone responsible and accountable, she has huge expectations for herself and heroes like Sonic and friends, who save the world on a regular basis and in most cases don't take it all that seriously, not to mention how traumatizing the Metal Virus was for everyone; i think it intensified this idea in her head of having to be the best version of herself and helping the heroes be the best versions of themselves. I think she's sorta stuck in her own head when dealing with Silver and Mimic, she specifically says she expected someone with powers like his to be more responsible with them, she wants to run a tight ship and she has reason to. In the moment where Whisper confronts her, i think from Lanolin's pov Whisper and Silver sort of ambushed her. We know Whisper is right and we know where she's coming from, but i think it's reasonable to think maybe Lanolin just didn't see that in the moment. I think with recent events in the current Sonic Riders arc, it's building up to a big falling out between the diamond cutters, Lanolin will for sure be devastated and broken up about her mistake, but they'll eventually talk things out, make up, and they all come out of it stronger.

@angrybrony 🤦‍♂️ That was so stupid on Whisper and Silver's part. Plus, I went back to reread the issue where it happened and saw that Whisper tried to push past Lanolin only for Lanolin to stop her. Then Silver used his power's on Duo/Mimic, which from everyone else in Restoration HQ's point of view was attacking a new recruit without evidence which resulted in 'injury'. I honestly don't blame Lanolin for dismissing their "He's the traitor" talk once this happened. While some Silver fan's view him as their 'PRECIOUS GOOD BOY BABY' (I'm not one of them), I thought this was really stupid on his part and some people feel it was out of character, but honestly it wasn't since he has jumped the gun before in handling things. So, in conclusion, Lanolin wasn't wrong for removing Silver from The Diamond Cutters for his actions. Plus, both could've easily gotten proof, got Lanolin alone in private, showed her the evidence they've gathered, and Mimic would've been dealt with sooner.

Defending Mimic, while not listening to the other side, treating Sonic and his frieds almost like a cause of the accident, getting a nice piece of the racing track destroyed, due to her quickness to jump to action an so on. Putting it into one sentence, she made quite a bunch of mistakes and soon the bill will come due...

I think you being entirely unfair to Sally as a character, Sally is also flawed in some cases, she wasn't bossy for the sake of being bossy, Sally loss her kingdom and Father due to Robotnik/ Eggman usurping the king and ruling most of the world as he used robotisizaton as a means to enslave the mobian population and destroyed most of the planet with pollution and mechanical reconstruction.
She was stressed out at times and even berated herself if she felt she made the wrong call.
This made her overly cautious and over-plan her strategies which Sonic clashed at this because he was so abrasive and loud about his actions.
The chemistry of Sally and Sonic is supposed to be opposites attract kind of narrative, he's brash, but can back it up with his speed, reflexes and abilities uncanny to others ( though it be cool to see Sal use the spin attack like most sonic characters) she's comes up with the strategies nessesary to his speed and devil may care attitude and complement each other.
Some of her plans even failed and this distraught her even when Sonic couldn't save the day at that time.
Yes Sonic annoyed her, but she enjoyed his company and some of his antics.
Also she never reveled in her status as royalty as she saw nature as the true royalty. ( she hated when Antoine pushes this as he flirted with her) In the original comics she felt shackled to the responsibility as princess and felt left out when she was forcibly retired from the FF and as she thought Sonic died during the Quantum Dial incident she was mortified at the possibility Sonic may have died.
There's really nothing wrong with Lanolin or Sally, people are overreacting on her behavior but we are in a middle of a character arc for her considering how this Riders arc is going. There's a long game for her since we are slowly getting to know her. Similar to Sage in Frontiers.
Please don't dismiss Sally as if she wasn't a good character, not upset, but It's felt you were a bit unfair to Sal is all.
Also sorry for the long post.

Im sorry to say this but im part of thr Lanolin haters group. I really dont like her working with Tangle of Whisper or being the leader of the new diamond cutters. I liked her when she was just a background side character. She just feels like a third wheel to Tangle and Whisper's dynamic. Sorry but that's my opinion. My girlfriend says I should let go of my disliking for her and I'm trying.

I really don't like Lanolin. Like the main point is for her to be a leader but she's been way too hard on people at overbearing. It was affecting Tangle and now she's kind of conflicted of who to follow because both of them are her friends. And I don't like how she disregarded her friend's safety since they could have gotten seriously hurt. It's just not good. Instead of coming of as a leader she just comes off as more mean and overbearing. Like it's not cool. It was the same thing for Silver too. I don't defend what he did but I felt like she should have taken his word seriously if there is a deadly assassin in the group. And she messed with Whisper's confidence and her trauma since this has happened to her before and she doesn't want it to happen again. I mean she left her there crying on the floor, literally a mess. And she should have asked Duo to just take off his gloves. She disregarded Silver and Whisper and now she's disregarding Sonic, Tails, and Amy and calls their equipment faulty. Like that is madly suspicious to malfunction during a race like that. Yeah this is kinda ruffles my feathers the wrong way in just kind of makes me more mad at Lanolin for being a jerk and not be nice.

I thought you were cooking in the first half, but then you burned down the whole kitchen. With what you said about Sally, now I'm sure you just don't know much about her character because there is literally no way in hell Lanolin is a better character with more 'relatability'. Theres no way near as much character development for Lanolin in the time shes been a character in comparison to what Sally gets in the Flynn era of Archie. Yeah shes royalty, but theres literally examples in the comic of royalty being annoying with their demands to the point of them being replaced by a council. As you said yourself, Sally is there coordinating and fighting alongside the other team members. She has the official title of princess, but her comrades respect her as an actual team leader and not royalty when in battle. You claim to like Lanolin for her stressful role as a leader, but that somehow doesn't apply to Sally who commands the freedom fighters (and other groups like the chaotix ehen the time comes for it) in the very chaotic world that is the Archie Mobius. Her and everyone elses home was either taken over or destroyed by Robotnik. Friends and family have been roboticized or straight up killed. The stakes are much higher so of course Sally needs to be a stern leader but for some reason you call that 'overly bossy'. But then its fine when Lanolin acts like a leader, with the exceptions of things like the Duo situation? I like Lanolin too, her design and what she brings to the comic. I also find it funny that her actions are actually making people angry. What you said here just doesn't make any sense.

@endosaurus1404 Sally as a leader had problems with her royalty status. She even turned down the offer to rule over her kingdom so she could focus her attention towards the war with Robotnik. That is literally the only thing I can see Sally having some kind of humanity. I know I'm generalizing, but the point is, she comes across as if she has it all together, WHICH IS NOT A BAD THING MIND YOU. And I'm not saying she doesn't have her struggles.
What I mean is, Lanolin is more relatable because she is basically what an average girl would be like if she was called to action in a role SIMILAR to Sally. Lanolin is constantly stressed out by the antics of Sonic and his friends. She shows it in her flaws as a leader, her face, her irritatability.
There is literally a small sketch comic by Adam Bryce Thomas which shows her (jokingly) in therapy because of all she goes through.
Just because Sally has been around longer doesn't mean that her character can't be usurped. But that ALSO doesn't take anything away from her character. Notice why the video is title why "I (me, myself and I) LOVE Lanolin". Whether you agree or disagree is up to you.
I won't lie, I love it when a character is above typical human flaws. Such as stress, peer pressure, etc. And that's what Sally was. You might have seen her flip out a couple of times but she always was able to get right back up to the occasion. But Lanolin? She cracks under pressure, she can't think straight. She doesn't know what to do.
Now who wouldn't be able to relate to that? That's the reason why she is a better character. Now they could easily fumble this and disregard all of this if she ends up not growing as a stronger leader. If she gets complacent then the writers have failed. But if she gets better at managing her own mental health and by proxy her TEAM...then I see no reason why she can't be the best.

@@KamyKam Man you really are generalizing Sally's character. You recognize that Sally goes through a lot with protecting her kingdom, but then you heavily downplay her character then hype up Lanolin. Much more than Lanolin, Sally often struggled with her position and what she wants to be. Both for in-universe reasons and out of universe (the different ways the earlier writers wrote her character), she struggles with her identity whether it is if shes even a worthy leader, her royal title, her relationship with sonic, or just being a decent person.
When Flynn takes over, all the weird baggage from the previous writers he uses as a strength in order to progress her character in a way that's way more relatable as a person than Lanolin thus far. She has an actual character arc of self discovery that comes to a head in issue 163 and beyond. Knothole was just destroyed and Sonic after being defeated at first, manages to save her and the rest of the citizens.
They retreat to the nanite reconstructed Mobotropolis given to them by Nicole. Eggman attacks again and Nicole has to give up her physical form in order to protect them. Seeing all of this occur and seeing her close friend Nicole sacrifice so much to them, Sally has a moment of realization.
For the past 85+ issues prior to this her character has been all over the place which you could attribute to the different writers. When Flynn takes over he retroactively recontextualizes her prior outburst with her struggling with self identity and the stress of her position. Shes been hating herself due to all the mistakes shes made sometimes as a leader but mostly as a person in the past 100 issues. As a call back to her introduction, she has Bunnie give her a shorter haircut resembling her older appearance forgoing the longer hair style shes had up until this point which symbolized she wasn't taking care of herself as much. The older shorter hair style symbolizes that she knows who she is as a person, and so she starts acting like a team leader again instead of pretending to act like royalty.
This is just one example of her just being a better character in my opinion which is not because there's simply more time with her than Lanolin, but because there's actually more substance with Sally. Your argument for Lanolin being a better overall character and being relatable is her simply being a 'normal person' that falls kinda flat when she only cracks under pressure once in her official debut as a named character. She makes mistakes (so did Sally) but those 'mistakes' are so surface level there not much more to them other than the fact they are mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes, that's like one of the most basic relatable things. Oh no, she kicked Silver out of the diamond cutters because she said he's a danger to the team, but oh no she didn't recognize Duo as an infiltrator. There really isn't much more to these things to her character so far. This is not to say they could still very much do something with it in the future as again I like Lanolin and her design. However much like most of the IDW run, it leaves a lot to be desired.
