    I felt bad for Bucky by the end. Falls from a moving train and loses his arm, is brainwashed and forced to kill countless people over the next 70 years, is framed for terrorism and is chased by Black Panther, gets his new arm blown off, gets a new new arm and then just dies, turned to ash. The guy just can't catch a break 😆

    I respect your opinion, but the Russo Brothers know what they are doing and there is a reason the Airport Battle isn’t very emotionally impactful. During the airport battle nobody wanted to fight each other. Spider-Man is just there because Tony needed a fighter, same with Ant-Man, they’re just there because their favorite heroes asked them to be there (if you notice, they are really the only ones that are constantly saying jokes.) Scarlet Witch was there because of what Tony did to here keeping her in the room. Hawkeye is only there because Cap needed help as well, it is mentioned how he is retired and how he is only there to help Cap. Falcon is there because he is Cap’s friend. Bucky is on the run and Cap is defending him. Vision and War Machine (although he does believe in the Accords) are there because they’re Tony’s friend. Black Widow is just helping Tony out, but as we see later on she actually helps a Cap escape. Tony is just fighting to follow Ross’ orders. The only one that truly wishes to fight is Black Panther, and that is for revenge (his emotions). He is the only one with the intention to kill and he is the only one who doesn’t say much. So the Airport Battle was still a fight among friends, both sides didn’t necessarily want to fight, but given how Ross is a big a-hole, they just wanted to follow orders. Now as you said, the final battle was meant to be the serious one, this one was driven by Tony’s emotions and rage. Unlike at the airport where it is even mentioned by Black Widow that Tony said to go easy on them. This is why the final battle has the more emotional impact unlike the Airport Battle

    • @swanpride
      @swanpride 5 років тому +24

      Exactly! The very point of the battle is that the situation escalates and goes out of hand. Exactly because they still banter in the beginning, the moment when Rhodey gets hurt is so shocking. Plus, it is not meant to be the final battle, it is the end of the second act. You should never use up all your emotional material before the movie is even over.

    • @evan9902

    I feel like infinity wars simple story is better than the complicated story of civil war. Instead of focusing on either the story or bucky or the story of the accords and combines them all together. Also if zemo wasn't there, it would make much more sense and the team would have broken up because of different ideologies rather than just one mastermind.

  • @jelmervanriet790
    @jelmervanriet790 5 років тому +48

    Im sorry but there are so many faults in your understanding of the civil war plot, its almost as if you havent seen the movie at all.
    For one. Zemo didnt have his plan written down in detail without any room to divert, improvise, adapt or just change. Someone else called him like a chess player which i very much agree with.
    Rhodey didnt ask Vision to kill Falcon, he litteraly said to "turn him into a glider" and hit his engine. NOT kill him.
    You also said that they should have made Ross be a lackey to Zemo to make a point about corruption within governments which i strongly disagree with. It doesnt fit Ross's character and i think him just being Secretary of State makes that point. Just a bit more subtle.

    • @jossuearias3509
      @jossuearias3509 5 років тому +7

      Ross also was never meant to be a good guy. Hulk wasn't present to reveal to the avengers that Ross was evil. He must have done cover up because even as we see in Spider-man Homecoming that the public blames the hulk for the destruction in harlem. Not Ross. Its very subtle but it shows that tonys trust in the government is faulty just like Cap said it was.

    An amazing video, as always. I will say this about your synopsis about Civil War:
    1) the accords, while they might have been impacted by the Wanda incident, were likely in the works long beforehand, as the mainline Avengers are approached with most countries having already signed.
    2) it’s clear that you side with Captain America heavily, and while I personally do as well, you portray the conflict rather flatly in Steve Rogers’ favor, when I find the conflict is far more nuanced.
    Again, fantastic video as always. Your comparison videos are always well written and amazing to watch

    More or less everything you said about Civil War...wow, just wow. Have you even WATCHED the movie? The two groups in Civil War don't just fight because they think that either Tony or Steve is right, each of them has their own reason to pick a side. No-one on Team Tony is there because they just follow Tony's opinion (except Spider-Man, but he is young and star struck and has no idea what the conflict is even about), Rhodey is there because he honestly believes in Oversight, Vision is there because he thinks it is a logic proposal, Black Widow doesn't even believe in the Accords or Tony but thinks that the path of low resistance is the best way to fix the situation and Black Panther just wants his revenge.
    Also, NO, Zemo did not plan all this to happen. Honestly, why are so many people missing this? The very first thing the movie establishes regarding Zemo is that he is always adapting his plan to what is happening. He is like a chess player who plans multiple moves in advance, and if something doesn't work out as planned, well, then he just changes has approach.

    I'm with you on the fact that I never thought Marvel would pull ahead of Star Wars, but after the shit the Last Jedi was I know clearly see why Marvel is and probably always will be superior. Well, at least while the assholes at Lucasfilm are still in charge.

    Nice video! I agreed with all of your points. Your points made in this video actually made me realize Civil Wars' flaws. I never realized that Zemo created his plan before the accords were issued but yet somehow, he knew Iron Man was going to show up so he used the footage of the death of his parents to trigger him. I also liked how at the end, you sort of compared Infinity War to The Last Jedi as well as giving Justice League a new score!

    I love the premise of the sokovia accords and a civil war amongst super heroes. Theyre sophisticated ideas in a genre were people hitting each other in the face in colorful costumes is the norm. So I tend to look at the plot of civil war with a glass half full (even if Tony is clearly a sociopath) but I agree with everything you said.

  • @jordank6961
    @jordank6961 5 років тому +8

    The whole first half of vid is so wrong. So so wrong.
    1. Ross was just the guy giving and explaining the accords, the whole U.N. was going to be in charge of the avengers, not ross.
    2. Zimo was planning on destroying the avengers before the accords was announced. He has a plan. Part of it failed when he could not get the mission report. So he framed bucky, took the psychiatrist's spot, and got the debriefing for the location from him.
    3. Zimo's plan did not hinge on the accords. It's just when he hears about it he adapts his plan.
    4. It was zimo's plan was to get iron man there. Of course iron man would doubt Steve's story. He thought it was conflict of interest that Steve was protecting Bucky, but when shown proof, him showing up showed that he believed Steve. It was zimo's plan.
    4 1/2. Yes Ross is hypocritical, but that's not relevant.
    5. And easy when you speak, I feel out of breathe just listening to you at some parts .
    Zimo's plan fails at some points. But like the joker in dark knight, his back-up plans have backups.
    Your first have vid was so bad I couldn't even make myself watch the second half

    Star Lord didnt screw anything up. Dr Starnge knew this would happen. He said out of all the possible outcome he saw they won 1 of them. If Star Lord screwed things up Dr Strange wouldve gone back in time and stopped him. That's also why he gave Thanos the stone to save Iron Man. He knew Iron Man is going to be a key part in stopping Thanos in Avengers 4. So if they got the Gauntlet off that wouldve screwed things up. Spider Man almost screwed thing up because he had the gauntlet off put Thanos caught it with the tip of his fingers because Star Lord punched Thanos causing Mantis to stumble back and let go of Thanos which cause Thanos to snap back into reality getting the gauntlet. Because if that messed things up Dr Strange would have fixed it immediately.

    I agree with you! While Infinity War is more of an event than a movie, Civil War has a flawed-but-good story. The former was not without some plot holes, but it was not as bad as the latter. How COULD Zemo have anticipated the arrival of Stark at the base, and know everything about Bucky? Speaking of Tony, aside from General Ross, he’s the REAL villain in CW, because of his super-sized ego, even when Cap is willing to forgive him. If only the CW battle scene could’ve had a better tone, it could have established higher stakes, but we were once again cheated. I did not feel cheated by Infinity War because, despite the humor (including a few jokes that didn’t quite work like Giant Peter Dinklage), it still felt more like a Greek tragedy from minute one, and even if we don’t believe all the characters are dead at the end, some (like Tom Holland) really sell their deaths, and as far as we know the villain wins! And Josh Brolin really does sell Thanos, making him the best Marvel villain, hands down!!!

    stumbled upon this and really enjoyed your fair minded break down. I absolutely love both of these films. We don't agree on everything but you explained your point of view well. You really nailed my only real problem with Civil War. The Accords are a story point that make so little sense to me. Not in themselves but in the execution of them.
    -First, Secretary Ross... all I can say about him is that I hope he was a casualty of the Thanos Snap. And I don't mean that I hope he was dusted. I hope he was the passenger in that helicopter that went down after its pilot faded into nothing. That way he doesn't have a chance of coming back. Hate that guy SO much :P While I don't have a problem with Zemo or his plans within plans, I do like your idea of making him a higher up who pushes the Accords.
    -Second, the examples they use for explaining the Avengers' recklessness make no sense. New York: the same place that the government was going to nuke in order to stop the invasion? Had the Avengers not been involved, the death toll would have been in the millions. Not to mention, the Avengers didn't cause that problem. Or the DC incident. Or Crossbones. They simply saved the day. They can hardly be held responsible for the collateral damage. Ask any survivor on the street and if given the choice, I think they'd prefer having the Avengers step in and help. The only Avenger who needs a leash is Tony since he's nearly solely responsible for Sokovia. If not for him, the Avengers wouldn't have had to step in and save the day since the world wouldn't have been threatened in the first place.
    -As for the airport fight, I think the point was for there to be a lack of tension. It's a firework party and no one (aside from Black Panther) is actually trying to cause any harm to the others. It's a bar room brawl between friends. They deliberately pair up according to strength and ability. They're still buddies at this point, there's still a chance to mend this rift. They're annoyed with each other and can't agree so they need to punch it out. The lack of tension allows the audience to let down their guard and believe that this could all work out. And then Vision makes a mistake and Rhodey nearly dies. Everyone stops because no one was supposed to be seriously injured. The reality of their rift hits home and there's no going back after that. It's meant to catch us off guard. Even the way Rhodey's fall is shot is meant to make the audience believe it'll be okay until the ground suddenly comes into frame just before Tony and Sam can rescue him. It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye. That fight isn't the heart of the conflict. It's just the turn.
    The climax is the personal rift between Tony and Steve at the hidden base. That's where the stakes are meant to be high. That's when our hearts get ripped out. That's when we know for a fact that mom and dad aren't getting back together again.
    -I do like that Vision was nerfed in Infinity War. I mean, once he's created, he's almost the perfect weapon against any threats that might come. He's the sort of weapon that makes it easier for some to sleep better at night. Because what CAN'T he do? So to have that weapon taken away, our heroes have to deal with the worse case scenario. He was the answer to Ultron. When planning one's defenses, it's always in the hopes that none of those defenses fail. Vision's supposed to be Tony's protective net around the world. Our heroes are forced to scramble with him out of commission. And it's his worst nightmare because, not only was he created to protect life, but he WANTS to protect the ones he's come to love. And he can't. He's become a liability.
    -As for Quill... I like it. It's like you said: Our heroes have almost succeeded in removing the gauntlet and it took all of their collective teamwork to simple achieve that. A plan they had to make on the fly because these guys are literally scrambling the entire film. They barely have a chance to catch their breath or give anything a second thought or refine anything. One mistake, one miscalculation, one lapse in judgement and it goes up in smoke. They needed perfect teamwork just to immobilize Thanos and it's fitting that the opposite of teamwork is what ruined everything. Besides, Quill was an emotional wreck. He was barely keeping it together as it was. Could the scene have used a bit of polishing? Sure. I mean, Nebula could have grabbed him so Tony could continue helping Peter get the Gauntlet but alas... Just like Thor shoulda gone for the head, our heroes are all emotionally compromised to some extent. And that's all the advantage Thanos needs. Because he's the only one with the will to act on what matters to him.
    -The deaths. Everyone always brings up the sequel thing and says that knowledge diminishes the weight for them. I understand but I don't really agree. In the end, whether Guardians 3 is all about bringing Gamora back aka The Search for Spock, it doesn't change what her friends and family experienced in losing her. Steve may see Bucky again but he's forever changed for having to experience that loss once more. He'll never get the sight of Bucky fading to dust out of his mind anymore than he'll forget what it was like seeing him fall from a speeding train. Tony will never get over Peter dying in his arms after begging Tony to save him. No matter how close they may be after Spidey is rescued. The universe won't simply recover from half the population just evaporating and the destruction and further casualties that followed. Thor has had to watch his little brother die twice. Both times, in saving his life. In proving that Loki still loves him despite all their bullshit. He'll never recover from that. Our heroes don't know there are sequels planned. THEY don't know that Thanos will be defeated. As far as Rocket knows, he's lost Groot again. No twigs to plant. This will leave its mark on these characters and that's why it works for me.
    -Don't know if you ever got around to seeing Antman & Wasp but it wasn't bad. A fun little palate cleanser after all that heartache :D
    Anyway, loved your video and shall seek out more
