    For those who keep asking: Most of her birds are rescues. Parrots will pluck feathers from stress, fear, boredom, etc., sometimes even AFTER they are rescued/being cared for properly. Her bird is not being neglected, abused, or mistreated. Think about it like this; feather plucking is a form of self harm. If you were in a traumatic situation (i.e. whatever this cockatoo went through before being rescued) and self harmed as a result, the self harm most likely WOULDN'T stop immediately after being removed from that traumatic situation. Her cockatoo is still recovering mentally.. Eventually, he will probably break the habit and start being a normal looking fluffy cockatoo. Looks can be deceiving; don't go calling this wonderful woman an abuser just because her bird looks bad!

      LA Peters thank you, first comment that actually gives a neutral perspective. First video I watched of her and didn't know that all the birds were rescues. Also didn't know about the plucking of the feathers even after the fact of being rescued... but trauma and bad habits of coping are hard to break... I truly hope it will be able to stop at some point.

    Abused birds tend to pluck their own feathers out of stress, but judging from the reaction Jersey (the white one missing the feathers) has toward her, she's not the one who did the abusing. I think Jersey's a rescue bird. Notice how calm they are around her, even sitting on her shoulder without an issue. She's definitely not the one who hurt them.

    • @myladyswardrobe
      @myladyswardrobe 6 років тому +10

      When a bird is abused and then rescued and loved, it doesn't mean the feathers and plucking behaviour will stop. Indeed, in some cases a bird in a terrible home life or being repeatedly "abandoned" (albeit in a secure bird rescue centre) may not pluck or show any self harming behaviour. Unfortunately when they DO find their forever home, and despite them being loved and loving their new humans, the stress they previously experienced can then "come out". So don't judge.

    To all the people in the comments asking about the bird with lost feathers, it was likely rescued. I highly doubt it's being abused, so just...stop.
    And to those who keep bitching she isn't paying attention to her dogs, they were probably waiting at the front door when she got back. So it's safe to assume that they got their attention before the camera was on, and the video is about her birds reactions, not her dogs.

      "She should have gotten them comfy" - what in the world does that even mean? Tucked them up in a feathered bed with blankets, a book, snacks and a TV for a week or so?
      Humans who have animals or birds sometimes need to go places without their birds. Marlene clearly needed to be elsewhere for a specific reason and her sister (READ the intro) was looking after the birds. When my parents or my sister looks after *my* cockatoo, he is given the same attention and quality of time as he gets with me. The same when I look after their birds.
      In this video, it is the birds' bed time when Marlene arrives home, hence why some of the birds were in their cages and the Cockatoo was covered up. But its very clear they are all very pleased to see her. Marlene has NOT abused any birds any more than being away for two weeks has "abused" the dogs. That is a terrible accusation to make and one without any evidence on your part. Think before you accuse.

  • @morkandmindy3
    @morkandmindy3 7 років тому +387

    I cannot believe all the ignorance and hatred being spewed by some of you clueless people who know nothing about Marlene, the owner, or about the situation of her rescued birds. Jersey, the white cockatoo, was a plucker before she came to live with Marlene. She had been abused and left in her cage for many years by her previous owner. Marlene rescued her so she could give her a better life! She is one of the most caring, loving people to her birds than you could ever imagine. Her entire platform is about NOT caging birds. The only time they are in their cages is when they are sleeping, otherwise they are out on their stands or being held and loved by Marlene and her family. She has very high ceilings, so the cages seem a lot smaller on the video than they actually are. And she wasn't away because she was on vacation somewhere--she had to work. And while she was away, her family took wonderful care of all the animals, just as she would! How dare you people criticize her, without knowing all the facts!! Marlene spends so much time and effort making videos so that she can educate people on how to care for their birds, so they can engage the birds and NOT cage them - so they can have a better life!! As far as her dogs, she greeted them at the door before the camera was turned on. She is always very loving towards her dogs. She spends a great deal of time with them, making them feel loved. The peope who wrote such mean, hateful comments on this video owe Marlene a huge apology for judging her and attacking her character! And in the future, don't be so hasty to judge someone without first knowing all the facts!!!

    • @albertorobinson9526

      It's kinda hard to make people understand to not criticize others without taking their times to think about the situation. Brainless people must be ignored, all what they want it's getting a little bit of our attention to get us mad: their main goal.

    • @makEKnickers
      @makEKnickers 6 років тому +4

      You are right, however you shouldn't criticize people for criticizing her. The reason being is that everyone who criticized, only has the birds welfare in mind. Without anybody criticizing these sorts of things, then those who do abuse animals will get away with it, and it's not worth the risk is it

      @@makEKnickers But that sets the tone for false accusations. They may have the birds' best interests in mind, but criticizing and making assumptions without all the facts is a one way ticket to a false accusation. It is important to bring attention to animal abuse, but not at the expense of publicly falsely accusing innocent people with little to no evidence of the contrary.

      Thank you so much for this comment, not just for supporting me but I admire you intelligence and logic. I am perplexed at how many supposed dog owners couldn't assume that my dogs came to the door before I filmed. Imagine I needed time to put my suitcases down, get the camera out...etc. and in all this time the dogs were at the door with me. What dog does anyone know that would have stayed in the living room and looked from afar, especially dogs that are still so excited in the video!

    The parrot (The white one) is not abused. It's a rescue bird from the looks of it but i can assure you that it is rescued. Probably an hypocritical selfish abuser abused the bird (Previous owner). It tends to pluck their feather whenever it's stressed and abused. Maybe the abuser (Previous owner) locked the bird in the cage or did something horrible. I keep finding rude comments. Its not her because the birds are calm with her. Usually parrots that are abused wouldn't fly on their shoulder.

    It seems like the Cockatoo must have been extremely stressed to pull out that many feathers. More than 10 days worth. Do you work with rescues? If so, kudos on you! I wish more people saw the life value in having birds, they are not always loud and annoying if you give them a good home. With a good home they tend to be much less noisy than most people think.

    As others have said, plucking (and any bad behavior, biting, excessive screaming, self-hurting, etc.) happens due to stress and/or boredom. Birds have a LOT of energy and if you keep them cooped up in a cage all day every day, they're going to find some way to burn it off, whether it's healthy or unhealthy.
    So since birds naturally preen themselves constantly, this taken to an extreme becomes plucking. Since they naturally vocalize or squawk, this taken to an extreme becomes screaming. And because uneducated owners tend to give the bird more attention--saying 'no' or 'stop'--when the bad behavior happens, they unintentionally reinforce that behavior.
    Once a bird picks up a habit, it can be nigh impossible to break it. Even if you're an owner who knows and does everything you should, if the bird has even one bad owner in its human-sized lifespan, it's probably going to carry that habit until the day it dies.
    From seeing just this video, I would bet money that that cockatoo didn't pick up its plucking habit while living with her. She knows her birds personally and knows what she's doing.

Curious, I was expecting to see some intelligent happy birds showing how much they missed their owner. That being said, watching this owner chirping, fawning, babbling and blathering on to them was excruciating. Frankly, I was embarrassed for HER (the owner). That's not cancer, that is an honest, spot on observation. People love their pets - I get that - but good grief that......was..... well, never mind.

      Okay I've been seeing a lot of comments about the Cockatoo that picks its feathers. There's three possible reasons, the most common reason for Cockatoo's is that they require a LOT of actual mental stimulation in order to survive in captivity. Meaning they need to be let outside. They're not the types that fly away, they might climb up a tree but they'll always come back to their home. They need to get out and need to be trained lots of different tricks, songs, games, puzzles... Anything that can keep their mind occupied, and it needs to be almost for the entire day. I work with parrots, the only captive cockatoo's of this type with full plumage are the ones where the owners take them everywhere, like you would with a dog. Other two reasons would be inbreeding or diet, in this case it's not the diet, these ones are fed well. Inbreeding is very hard to trace. This bird has no scarring on its chest so that means there's a chance it could all come back, but as soon as it gets bored it'll revert back to plucking. Hope this clears things up for all those wondering about why it's plucking.

      Sorry I wanted to add a little more to my giant paragraph. You can't compare these Cockatoo's to other parrots, they require a heck of a lot more stimulation than all others. Very confident birds that handle a lot more stress than other birds can, get that little guy out as often as possible, use a harness if you're afraid. And have a ladder haha in case he gets in a tree and is too scared to jump out. that happens to them too until they learn how. It's not instinct, they're skills that need to be learned.

      I'm sorry, but you are irresponsible if you let any pet bird outside without being in the cage or tethered. I know lots of people that have had their birds fly away. I know you say this breed won't do it , but why even take the chance?

      Greb Nitty I'd say it's irresponsible to get a bird in the first place. They are hella cute, don't get me wrong. But birds need to be free and fly around

      Sometimes you can't help it. I know a few bird owners who have tried everything and their birds won't stop plucking. Also, plucking is very often in adopted birds who were abused. They have new loving owners, but they still pluck till the rest of their lives.
