- The Kingdom/Jeddah Tower situated in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia at 1008m, will be the next world's tallest building. The $1 billion building will stand more than an kilometer tall!Over the past couple months progress has been regular and it should continue at the same speed over the next months.

The top 85 floors will be totally empty because they were designed too narrow to fit offices or apartments. And there isn't enough demand for space to fill the rest of the building. Basically it will be an empty tower built for vanity.

All the negativity! There's nothing wrong with wanting to build the biggest, tallest, newest. In fact, New York wouldn't have many of its tallest buildings if it wasn't for a competitive factor. A large part of our civilization is built with competition in mind and we wouldn't have many things today without it. Let's just celebrate the fact that we've mastered the knowledge in order to build something like this. I think the partial issue is people in the west not wanting to admit that the future is not in their country. I live in America but I'm not afraid to admit that cities like Shanghai, Dubai etc make our skyscrapers look like the third world. The Freedom Tower in NYC is ghastly and would be considered an average building in Asia. No country can be on top forever. Honestly, we need to start considering ourselves citizens of the world instead of being consumed by jealous nationalism. Good for Saudi Arabia.

A majority of NYC's skyscrapers exist because of small property lots and high acreage prices. The only choice was to build up than out.
In all honesty, an end to corruption in our government is far more important to me than having shiny ivory towers for elitists. Good for Saudi Arabia to have beautiful new towers like this, but unfortunately they don't enjoy anywhere near the quality of life the US and other Western countries had in their prime. And let's be honest here, the only reason SA (or UAE, or Israel) enjoys any semblance of quality of life is because of the US, other Western countries, and Russia pouring billions of dollars into their economies. Heck, this tower was designed by American architectural and structural engineering firms.
And I'd take ghastly skyscrapers over Sharia law any day.

Yes. Jeddah tower is still under construction and it would be possible to see it in 2019. Saudi Arabia, the next unowned year is a tower about 1050 meters high and would be huge as possible. I wonder they would build this tower eye in the sky :P

What is the purpose of building this shitty tower in the middle of a country with ample amount of land and no people to live in it? Also its just cheating. The building is 1,008 meters tall but top floor will be at 630 meters. So basically this building has height of 630 meters which is its functional and purposeful height and it means Burj Khalifa will still be world's tallest habitable building. If its just about building the tallest vertical structure then why not simply build a one story building and then erect a 2,000 meters long antenna on it?

The project is under control of Al Waleed bin Talal, a guy worth 22 billion. The tower is expected to cost 20 billion. 2 billion to spare. Not that that is going to save them much cash.

To the people who think the owners just rely on their countries Oil for their income..
There are about 3-4 Companies invested into this project;
1 of the majors being, Kingdom Holding Company(KHC), who are/had been invested with some of the largest Western based companies, such as; Amazon, AOL/Time Warner, Ford, Apple, Cola-Cola etc..
In short, their return in investments will more than be financially viable, even without their oil money.
