Safe sailing.
Boat:
White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built.
The camera gear:
Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached.
Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v.
Underwater video Gopro3plus.
Editing:
Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff!
There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access.
Content:
I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining.
Comments and being at sea:
I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World.

Another great episode! The Tropic of caNcer is in the North, so the Tropic of Capricorn is in the South.
Yes you are wobbly!!!
Feel good 😊Captain Marvel !
Wilson is a bit of a lazy bugger hehehehe
What a champion you are.
Keep On Truckin SeaDog
Hi Barry. I have sailed for 7 years with a small Autohelm 800 connected to my Aries rudder which works in the same way as your rudder. The advantages of this construction are a very low power consumption and a high accuracy especially with a weak gusty wind and under motor. I put my Autohelm on where the wind vane is on your rudder and thus there is almost no power needed for the rudder to easily control your boat. We wish you a continued good journey and thank you very much for all the many hours of entertainment. Sincerely, Claus from Denmark
This guy is bloody awesome
Youll loveit inside the reef - fair winds
roaring reefs do not make nice dream by night! waiting for the new morning and new episode! great old dude! we seya the next!!
Being on the sea is kind of like being in space your own thoughts and the stars to guide you on you way
it really is magical
Thanks for my Seadig fix Barrie. Sláinte.
I regards to a disgusting looking breakfast...my English mum used to say... It all goes down the same hole so just eat it. And you're right..it still tastes good. Love your videos.
Awesome channel! Thank You for your time and effort, quite expertly done. The classical reef you played at about 11 minutes made me thing playing classical music during rough sailing or weather. We all watched Bugs Bunny as kids :)
Love it. Someday.......
Thank you I always like a little action and this video provided, not too much mind you but enough to get one's attention, beans, beans the, well you know the rest 😎
Barry, you are fantastic story teller. I enjoyed every minutes of all your episodes in massive binge watch. Best sailing channel on YT. Congrats and fair winds.
Just love your videos and your way with words. Fair winds and cold beer. Hope to see you in Knysna South Africa one day!
lunch sucks but you enjoy the view😊👍👍
hang on barry. good luck
Stay safe....good to see you again
Rock on!!!
That was exciting
Crazy good Barry ....
From one old seadog to another, albeit I'm back ashore now after 18 years afloat, Bravo Zulu Barry. Loved my hydrovane, mounted on a 38' 12 ton wooden ketch, steered perfectly downwind in a F8. After watching all the bums and tits in the tropics on youtube its great to see a real sailor in cold climes. Good luck and thanks for sharing with us.
Ah, back to Sea!
I always enjoy your videos.
I kind of surprised that I can watch 18 minutes of nothing but sailing out in the middle of the ocean, I guess that means you are a good story teller. Love your videos Berry, you're living the dream I had many many years ago
God bless you mate:)
Amazing berry I want to set out on starlight now ... in fact I will
I do like these vids I must say!👍☘️
Great opening shots.
I hitchhiked to India as a youngster in the late seventies and recall meeting some people in New Delhi who had driven an old red London double decker bus from the UK .. its advertising space was covered in Lea and Perrins advertising and they told us that they had indeed received some sponsorship from this venerable old company .. so its worth a shout Barry !
I sail thru you.love your videos.
Beautiful video! Take care
amazing, 76k views and no T and A, love your channel. Dee and Deb
Outstanding!
Ta fr that'n Barry. Squally, increasingly cowd and yon lumpy head seas & wind, reminds me of what I'm missin, so feeling happier abart bein aground in't dales.
Safe travels barry mate all the best to you. Youll be there soon. cheers.
Glad to see you using the radio. Tuning is usually to blame if RX is clear but not getting out.
They should give you a royalty cheque - always been a fan, but transformed my avocados
GREAT, GREAT BARRY !!!
That looked like a Icom 706MkII - Nice radio - lost mine in Hurricane Katrina. Did not realize you were a ham. Vessel QSL's are a prized possession!
@Bigfootgerry TBH, I did not make note of the frequency. Just the radio I once had. I am a ham, and now I have a small sailboat for coastal cruising. My plan is to do Morse Code while sailing for those of us that enjoy both venues and QSL cards. Tnx.
Great going Seadog, another bully episode
Always glad to see another vid from our buddy Barry!
Watching these old episodes again. The ones at sea like this one are my favorite. Wish I could add another thumbs up.
Dear Barry, I believe this is my first UA-cam comment ever, but it needs to be done, because I really want to tell you just how much I do love your videos. I started with your Panama canal videos, and couldn't ever stop since. I am not exaggerating when saying I am addicted to your series in the meantime. I just arrived at this -- currently last -- episode, and am feeling a little panic about wanting to continue my (our (ok, your)) trip to New Zealand (and hopefully further on). Your videos have a perfect mixture of being amateur videos but still always interesting, with a story, exciting, and simply an extremely sympathetic main actor. You really inspire, because you are such a "normal" person, down to earth, yet you do this completely-out-of-normal-people's-world trip. I really want to thank you!! All the best from Berlin! Good winds!
tropic of cancer is in the northern hemisphere, easy way to remember is the movie under capricorn sky's was set in the southern hemisphere
Tips when using HF radios. When the Sun is high, you use a higher frequency; when the Sun is low, you use a lower frequency. That's why some radio cruising nets have evening/night/morning and afternoon frequencies. You have to tune your antenna before you can broadcast and most systems will auto tune your antenna for you. Your system requires you to press the "Tuner/Call" button and wait at least one second for the red "TUNE" light to illuminate; now your antenna is tuned to that frequency and you may broadcast. If someone is giving you weather forecasts, you need to coordinate frequencies for the different times of day. When I fly transpacific routes, we're given a primary and secondary frequencies for our route, because it's not a perfect system. Who ever is giving you the weather information to have a backup frequency. We have multiple radios in the airplane to monitor several frequencies, but you only have one. Have the primary frequency for the top of the hour and the secondary for the bottom half. Keep up with the good stories. I'm enjoying your adventures and I wish I was out there with you. www.classicinternational.eu/_clientfiles/manuals/icom-ah-4-antenna-tuner-manual.pdf
oh, theres more! Oh no, the wind is blowing, oh no it isnt, oh so much trouble to leave, NOW oh no I hear waves on reef , such a worry to arrive!! Yes mate, waves and reefs ARE part of sailing...lol
Great video Barry. :)
"Eggs, over sloppy!" That's awesome, have to remember that one.... Barry, I don't know how you do it, solo sailing, solo video production, solo everything, keep it up and stay safe....

Great to see another episode of your adventure..... be nice if you were to come down to Marlborough Sounds.....
Great video! Fair winds and stay safe 😀👍🇳🇴
People keep calling Barry old? He just seems like a youngster to me (I’m considerably younger than him). His heart and attitude are young and ready for action. With that attitude he’ll go on forever 👌🏻
I’m well chuffed you liked my comment Barry 😄. Look forward to your next instalment young man 😉
brilliant

You make a very realistic story, giving us an understanding of your joys and concerns.
You have your SW radio working. Yea! When the other person has difficulty understanding you, speaking much more slowly will help the other person understand.
you and Sailing Uma are the only seafarers I watch ... love your stuff ... thanks for being you
It is like a sailing soap and I love it. Glad you are safe in NZ
Great video Barry, keep em coming mate. Always pulling for you.
great vid dog thanks
A rolled up jib for a backwards riding sail! great idea!! ty old dog teaches an old dog a new trick!!
Tropic of cancer is North of the equator, you are talking about Tropic of Capricorn which is south of the equator. Good episode Barry. Cheers!
I just watched your first episode. White shadow sure has aged but you look younger and heathier than in your first videos.
Hi Barry. Watched a few of your earlier video’s. Liked them so much I decided to binge watch the lot. 2 weeks later here I am with you on episode 155. Wow what a trip that was and can’t wait for the future video’s. what an inspiration you are. You are so right when you say, do it today, do not wait till tomorrow. Stay safe Barry, and keep an eye on Wilson, he looks restless.
Style is very nice, The oldman telling (and living) stories, we are listening him near a fireplace drinking coffee etc.
That thing about whales with bad breath was a new one to me. Very good Barry!! Lol
My dear Barry, only land crabs has bad weather. Sailors/seaman has a different weather.
Keep up the good work Barry, you lift our spirits through this terrible pandemic, stay safe my friend, fair winds to you 👍😁
Yes! .. indeed Barry is sure a great story teller. Reminds us of all the adventures in our minds when we were kids and wanted to be explorers, the difference with his Vlog is he tries to put you in the adventure.. well done Barry.
Barry, please put your repair list on paper. Getting in is a real joy but without THE LIST, O Boy! And by the by here's to Mad Dogs & Englishmen. Love your tales and adventures your soul is amazing.
I like the wind noise...makes for more realism, cheers Barry!
Me too!
Superman on a bumpy road ahoo. What a hard job that is. And here am I in the sofa watching this fantastic series.
Thank you mate for one more safe sails. Looking forwards in for next ep. Take care Old Seadog.
🙏
According to windspeed (App) sometimes is better to reef as you get over 30 degrees inclination. The boat will straight up and heading could turn easier as speed and comfort improves. Got to work also your blocks position. Bests (I know this is months late)..:)
its true not to get above theblimit of humanity not to get judge crazy AM I RIGHT WILSON?!!! hahaha wish you the best travel tatay or paps
Ultimate social distancing 😆👍😎awesome!
Amazing beautiful sailing around the 🌎 world. Fair wind's. All videos superb
It's that dang Wilson ! he loosened that stuff up because He found out you went for a walk about with that native coconut back at big mamas place.
Being a sailor and an musician like you (and in about your age) I can tell you the answer to the question: " when should I reef my sails?"
It is exactly the same answer as to the question: "When should I turn down my volume?"
The answer is: "exactly, when you think about it first time"
Don't get this - from a land lubber.
P.s. I always watch your vid's with a beer in my hand. Cheers my friend 🍻
I feel like I've been watching these for years.. and with the virus i have the strongest urge to rewatch from the beginning so I can live vicariously lol
Van de stadt, a great design , mine does 12 knots

Actually, that brekkie looks quite tasty.
Sorry for the delay due to Covid Barry the checks in the mail. 👊👍😎
Great episode admire your spirit and drive!!!
Hi Barry, great video, you know what they say, when you first think about reefing, reef! When you think about shaking out a reef wait ten minutes. Stay safe. Fair winds.
This guy has such an awsome life and attitude. Love your videos.
That meal looked revolting. I guess it tasted better than it looked.
Good to see you again Barry !
Always a joy to see your episodes pop up on UA-cam.
Thanks Barry such great videos!
Probably the only power boater here, following along. Don't forget Barry: Umbertos, Wantagh, for the best NY pizza you ever had. No masks needed where you were. Fair winds and following seas.
Keep going Barry, nearly there. Enjoying your videos.
Cheers Barry. Amazing to think a couple of years ago, you were struggling past Finisterra in Spain and now you're as far away as its possible to be on Earth!
