    Safe sailing.
    Boat:
    White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built.
    The camera gear:
    Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached.
    Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v.
    Underwater video Gopro3plus.
    Editing:
    Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff!
    There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access.
    Content:
    I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining.
    Comments and being at sea:
    I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World.

    Thank you for making sailing videos that aren't about attracting viewers with T&A. It's hard to convince a non-sailing wife that boating isn't just about flashing ass when watching a lot of the other "cruiser videos" on youtube.

    Barry talks to the camera like I'm there and he is having a jovial conversation just with me. That takes talent because in fact he is often more profoundly alone than any of us ever will be with sky meets sea horizons all around. I couldn't do it - don't have a good voice or the right personality, and it would seem hard for me to talk to a camera like that when I am so alone. Don't think I'll ever sail, but I really enjoy this channel vicariously and otherwise...

      Absolutely agree, great story teller, beautiful natural and sincere manner, very pragmatic, and I'm sure if you asked Barry himself he'd agree that the camera, and his viewers are, along with "turbie" the wind generator, the hydrovane, which has a name, and the coconut, again name eludes me, are his crew, and his way of personalising inanimate objects and devices. Barry really is an amazing sailor, and a great "true cruising life" channel with no T&A, no big shipments coming in with new PV controllers and batteries. It's real, and beautifully portrayed by a great seaman and entertainer, respect

    There is something utterly terrifying about a reef...the wild water on the seaward side...the channels of water being sucked in or expelled. They are wild places. But so incredibly beautiful. It was a priviledge to see your visit to Minerva....gonna get my map out and see exactly where it is...

    Glad you made your approach. On 7 July 1962 a twenty ton cutter Tuaikaepau, sailing from Tonga to Auckland, ran hard upon the outer edge of Minerva Reef, 380 miles south of Suva in Fiji. Heavy seas and the sharp teeth of the coral quickly broke the cutter to pieces, and her complement of seventeen Tongans found themselves without even a small boat on a reef that was totally submerged except during the few hours of low tide each day. Great story.

    Barry, regarding wind noise in your microphone...beyond 25mph winds not sure there is much to be done but...I'm an old Deadhead Taper and have recorded many outdoor concerts and festivals from the audience...Try using Omni pattern microphones they tend to pickup less wind noise...I use Milab and Microtech Gefell 21mm diameter Cardioid microphones and short of a Rycote Blimp ($300 USD plus fur covering) have found only one windscreen that works consistently...a Shure A81WS....They are rather large and have two stages, a foam outer cover with a course mesh inner to hold shape (think plastic tuffy pot scrub pad for inner section). Wind passing in to and out of the foam for some reason is better at cutting wind noise than a similar large size solid foam windscreen. It may not be the right diameter for your microphone...I have other taper buddies that use Rycote Super Softie and a cheaper version from MOVO called Ballistic Nylon with success (MOVO has multiple sizes that may fit your needs).

    Barry. As a backup KEEP SOME PETROL IN THE SMALL TANK UP TOP.... I never once had a yamaha engine do the dirty on me, but maintenance is needed.
    Those little 2 stroke Yam motors are fantastically reliable, much moreso than the 4 stroke later models.
    A fair wind at your back!

    • @jacksbackable
      @jacksbackable 4 роки тому +2

      Ian Gourlay I concur, and it’s my trade. However all small outboards definitely need an inline sediment/water trap filter. I keep meaning to look up a part number. SailingSunday have as much trouble as Barry with theirs! Those small older 2strokes were all made by Tohatsu and painted to suit each brand. The 5hp yamahas are the best, lite and have their own onboard fuel tank.

    • @notafanatic
      @notafanatic 4 роки тому +1

      I had a 4HP 2 stroke Yammy bought in about 1987, used for a year then sat in my loft until 2012. Started on the 3rd pull and still going strong.

    • @yabojabo8578
      @yabojabo8578 4 роки тому

      And a good reliable fuel treatment (not Stabil). 2 strokes are far more fuel sensitive than 4 strokes due to the unknown amounts of alcohol in the fuel and the absorbed water and oil turning into 'snot' and clogging up the whole works. A reliable fuel treatment is essential in to keep this from happening. It's a nightmare when it does. I hope it's not Barry's problem.

    • @SirBeauJangles
      @SirBeauJangles 4 роки тому

      @@jacksbackable I had a wonderful little 3hp "Malta" by Yamaha, a spinaround engine with no reverse. Still have my final 5hp longshaft that's got a real gearbox with reverse. I'll never sell it. I can't believe it's Tohatsu built - I've seen Tohatsus stripped out and the quality of casting was terrible in comparison. That Malta had the Yamaha tuning forks trademark on the insides of its case-castings. Were indistinguishable from Yamaha m/cycle engine casting-quality. But some brands are made in odd places - like I had a 9.9hp Mariner that was supposedly Mercury-built that was made in - Belgium of all places. (its standard of construction just reinforced my confidence in Yamahas.) It was a poor effort. My favourites were the big Yamaha 55hp twin-cylinder strokers. (not the triples) Utterly bulletproof - also made by Yamaha for Mariner, I had one under each name plate, one after the other. Completely, utterly reliable. Parts were interchangeable between Mariner and Yamaha versions although the top cover-cowlings were a little differently shaped. Last I heard of that motor - under the Mariner badge they were still on sale in Mexico because the inshore Mexican fishing boat owners kept up a steady demand for a reliable basic workhorse engine - which mine most certainly were.
      I think most outboards die because of owner ignorance and neglect - not hours of well maintained service.

    No good now you are at sea. BUT when you get to land. Acetic acid. I.E vinegar, if you get the same stuff the restaurants use (concentrated, they add water to make it table vinegar). its perfect stuff for pickling sealife. infact its used industrially to remove sealife from seawater systems on a large scale. on the flip side sodium hydrochloride(bleach) is used as an aquatic inhibitor to stop life forming. advise is to bung up the outlet and just pour in the acetic and leave for as long as you want, then simply remove. does not effect rust formation or damage paint coatings. its cheap and effective. sadly not a cure to your boats design though! Good luck and im at total envy of your journey around the globe at the correct pace of life.

Angus Primrose was a really good naval architect, Sparkman and Stevens intern, one of my favorite designers, Angelo Lavranos worked under him at Marine Projects in the mid to late 70's before Primrose was lost at sea. Great design heritage and very strongly built boats. Might have a yard or two on old Shaddy. Barry, steel hull is a very safe option, yes maybe a bit extra maintenance wise, but Van De Stadt's have a great rep for solid seaworthy boats, maybe not the fastest out there but you'll be safe in one, throw Bruce Roberts into the mix too.
    Fair winds and safe sailing, all hail the hydrovane

    Hi Barry, I have clicked onto your sailing blog and I find your travels very interesting. The thought that pops into my head is being single handed how do you manage to sleep? I cannot see you just pulling over into a quiet little rest stop and have a kip. Multiple days travel requires sleep periods and life would not be nice having to wake every fifteen or twenty minutes for a check-see. Take care.

    Barry, you are my favorite 'sailor' on you tube. I'm 71 and have sailed since 16. My sloop is S/v ...Waves (a 37' fiberglass Buchan (50 were made) 31' waterline & a 18.38 sail/disp ratio.
    I share that info to add a bit of credibility to my praise for your channel. Prayers continue, ...Waves

    My second motorcycle was a Yamaha . I had it for several years and put 46,000 miles on it and it never ever let me down.
    .not even when I was rear-ended and crashed I stood her up and she fired right up so I rode it to a friend's place near by. With the right handlebar bent straight up in the air.
    Now my Harley left me broke down several times. Once on the interstate downtown Seattle at bar closing time . That was scary I was sure I was going to get run over.
    But the Yamaha never let me down. It was air cooled and air cooled bikes usually are wore out after 25-30 thousand miles. Miss that old girl.
    Had to sell it when I moved either that or the Harley and no girls ever jumped on the back of a Yamaha at a stop light.

    Found it with sat google and it looks like a big atol. I guess maybe a little protection inside ? Watch out for Minerva, you'll go blind when you see her. Another guy had a outboard problem very similar. Turned out to be the fuel pump in the motor. He was able to determine that was the problem by holding the fuel source up high, the engine ran fine when he did that. He had rebuilt it but not used great parts, re-did it and it worked great.

    Yes Barry your friends Moody is a strong, simple boat of Angus Primrose design ours we bought new in 84 a Bill Dixon design 41'cc of which our family lived aboard and cruised for 10 yrs, she was a wonderful cruiser named "Set Free"
