It's interesting to hear your acknowledgment that aikido practice treats the jo as a tool to explore the empty-handed art, as it's lever nature magnifies movements that can otherwise be too small to optimise. My own take on using the jo and bokken in my jiu jitsu training is to be better aligned with the holistic nature of unarmed training within the context of our being the last resort. Actual weapons training with intent can reveal why certain body movements in a martial art are favoured in their congruence with the weapons associated with the "style". Jo is a fantastic weapon to augment your training, as wielding "a stick" is also about acknowledging it as being one of the fundamental tools of combat.
