My apologies for the late release of this video. Initially my plans were to upload it yesterday but after several attempts battling the UA-cam copyright system, I simply had to delay it by a day. As you can imagine (and as I have said multiple times now) this was a gruelling and unpleasant process and honestly the only thing I dislike about making UA-cam videos. Because of this, you may notice certain editing choices made (black screens and harsh cuts) that were caused by me having to cut around certain scenes. I hope this does not affect your enjoyment of the video- The Complete K9 Review is Coming Soon! hopefully no copyright struggles with that one.
okay, i’ll put my hand up. i was a massive class fan and HAD A TUMBLR BLOG ABOUT IT. i think it was aimed at my sort of fan at that time - 15-18, a bit morose, i got really wrapped up in it, though i haven’t watched it since then... BUT - the other reason this show sadly flopped and flopped SO hard is what was happening with the BBC at the time. Class was one of the first series to debut on the new BBC Three (for non-Brits, that’s the main broadcaster’s channel aimed at 16-30 year olds), which had moved from a linear traditional TV channel to an exclusive space on iPlayer (BBC’s streaming service). The result was they had no idea how to market exclusive BBC Three shows, and then showed them on linear TV at 10:30pm on BBC One after the main news when most normal people head to bed. Had the BBC actually marketed it properly, it might have scraped another series.
Class was the only doctor who spin off i saw as it came out and at the time i was very much in my "oh i'm so cool and edgy" phase and so i ate this shit up. I've rewatched it a couple times since and i gotta say, i still love it. It definitely isn't for everyone but for someone who does like this genre, it really hit the spot for 12 yr old me. Detention is honestly one of my favourite episodes of television, everything about it is just so good and so compelling. Will forever be mad this didn't get renewed for a second season this shit was banging
I'd love to see a vid on the Flux behind the scenes stuff! It all sounds very interesting, but it's hard getting a clear picture from all the quotes here and there. Also I kinda enjoyed Class, at least the parts I remembered because I watched it once at release. I thought Quill and her solo ep were great, the setup at the end was neat and I felt like it could have flourished later on
That whole era of Doctor Who is very illusive but also one I'm particularly interested in. I have done so much research on Flux both the story in-show and out, it's actually crazy. Some would say too much research so I hope that at some point I will be able to put it all into one (or even a series) of videos
I remember there being a fake concept going around UA-cam that had the Master featuring as a prominent villain, and taking over the title, changing it to MasterClass, and to this day, I am livid that nobody ever did anything with a marvelous pun like that in an official capacity.
I agree on the series itself, but personally I find the main theme drags the tone down so far. Any suspense, tension or atmosphere drains out of the episode when I hear that music kick in
I did watch it! I thought it had potential but needed a LOT of work! Some of the work it needed was marketing! Talk about burying it! I only found out about it because I sore a review of it with 12 in the thumbnail!
I've watched Class. It's fine, nothing to write home about but it's not bad. I'd rather another series of class than a year of no Doctor Who content but 🤷
-raises hand- I watched it just because it was Doctor Who (and not at all because the adverts I saw showed gay romance, honest). Ram was definitely my favourite character, although the amount of 'British trauma' they gave him episode after episode started to get hard to stomach. I honestly thought episode one was just to setup his character - I was not prepared. I... also enjoyed Miss Quill. I liked her archetype within the plot as the teacher who uses negative reinforcement but isn't actually a bad person. But I don't think her being a main character was necessary for the show. Her backstory connection to the main character just served to make the main character morally repugnant, which was really hard to just ignore while they were getting up to episode-of-the-week antics. The main character's backstory was probably the worst part. Well, that or the Shadowkin. Miss Quill could have just been a normal human teacher who served a similar purpose to Mr Gilbert in Inbetweeners and I would have got as much enjoyment out of her. The episodes that aren't part of the Shadowkin plot were definitely made the show worth watching for me (even the Quill one). I would have watched more if there was more. For a season 2 I would really need them to resolve the Shadowkin plot off-screen though - because, like you, I did not care and I would dread having to watch more Shadowkin if they announced more episodes. The show did need to better establish why it existed, though. Setting it as the school the Doctor was working at would have made much more sense narratively.
I remember watching this when it came out and desperately trying to get anyone to care but no one would. It just wasn't marketed basically at all and shoved on iPlayer. I have fond memories but remember very very little
So, the BBC dinged you for showing footage of the show. Nice work, guys. It’s almost like they really don’t want people seeing it. I didn’t see Class. No reason. I just… didn’t.
The footage I used was either from the trailer or short edited together snippits that were showing what I was talking about. VERY annoying that it all had to go but what you gonna do
Watching Class makes me feel like I have dementia, I watched the whole series, and didn't remember any character's name and plot, I watched it again and still don't remember anything
For me I loved class so much I can't explain exactly why other than I seem to gravitate towards "shit shows" 😅 (also getting a gay couple storyline was amazing to me as at the time I hadn't seen many and it was at a time I was stressing and questioning if I was Normal)
oh i watched class but haven't thought about it in years, this'll be fun. i had a mild crush on mrs quill as i was 14 and she's hot but my god she got annoying quick
I watched Class and from what I recall, Tanya's actor is very mid, they basically speedran the whole April/Ram/Shadowkin thing, it wasn't unenjoyable, but it wasn't the best thing either? What's really peculiar is there is not one but FOUR Big Finish boxsets for Class and at some point main roles are just RECAST? Utterly baffling but they do get a story with Ace in? Not heard those though :')!
I feel having the Doctor in the first episode messed up the show. If the show was written, acted and directed like Detained (a bottle episode/character piece) - it probably would’ve been passable or carried on. As for the characters, I only liked Qull because of Katherine Kelly. I’m a soap opera fan, so her character in Class felt similar to her Coronation Street character - Becky, but tuned down. Charlie, Ram and Matteusz are good looking. That’s all I can say about their characters. As for April and Tanya, there’s nothing to them. The whole show is basically Series 11 of Nu Who and Series 4 of Torchwood - nothing connected to Doctor Who. Just references here and there, or a character from the main show that pops up once and to never been seen again.
If the Doctor wasn't going to be a recurring character they shouldn't have included him at all- him showing up to then leave these CHILDREN to fight for themselves is crazy💀
Also having the Doctor show up clashes with the tone. Class is a violent show with dark themes and strong language. And then the Doctor shows up and does his thing. There's a reason Torchwood never included them.
I caught up on doctor who before the 50th and watched it as it came out after that. This was the only spinoff I saw as it was being released and I didn’t love it, thought it was kinda mid, but the ending got me so hyped. I was really looking forward to seeing what they were cooking but turns out they took it off the burner before it could even heat up.
Since you didn’t have “class” in the thumbnail I didn’t even realize what this video was until I saw the channel name and the actual title of the vid, I have never heard of this show before
interesting and good analysis... i watched it all today and it felt like it was scared to do interesting stuff with the times when it had good ideas, in a way that Torchwood would've done something interesting with them. like, Torchwood was fuelled by a desire to be adult and edgy Doctor Who, whereas this lacked that drive to push a premise to actually interesting places. like, the honesty rock episode would've slapped with torchwood. the loved ones returning via an alien would've been so good too. Can't lie I did really enjoy it as it came out, as it was basically aimed to my age. Still really like it. i watched class in one sitting one day and it was very strange, there was a surprisingly decent amount of good stuff but every time it got into the main plot bit it got worse, everything to do with the shadowkin and april felt ridiculous in a not fun way but everytime they just focused on the characters like in the detention episode, it was really good!
I watched Class when it came out and actually own it on DVD. Not because its good. But its Doctor Who. It has so many conceptual issues. They should have written the show entirely around Ram. I kept forgetting the Prince even had a boyfriend. The “younger” girl was really unlikable. Quill was a mixed bag. The Shadowkin are immensely uninteresting. The Weeping Angel twist is the most interesting thing the show does. We need a Big Finish audio or something to follow up and close out the loose threads
Just realised something Nardal is the only companion on screen who is male to have been alone in travels with the doctor (bar Wilf but Wilf never really had well going through time & space like Nardole (his name is dole not dal weird) had a whole series that we never saw & then he just disappears at the end of the doctor falls. spared from twice upon a time at least.) Also I watched class been told it wasn't good & liked it all the way through didn't much mind the shadow monster... scene but then again Davis had it twice in his broke cannon series & I guess I'd seen it enough to just shrug it off by the time I saw the episode. Great fun sitting in the winter in my Mums office with the heater on in the dark nights basically in a shed detached from the house & I wanted more when it was over cause It only had a few episodes & I wish it had more sadly nobody watched it & also the show held back nothing killing characters like that fuck it was what series one of torchwood should've been to show it wasn't a kids show. Edit: I guess I agree with you on why you don't like it if you don't like the style of British coming of Age then I guess you won't like it. and thanks for telling me there is a whole genre of this. Way better than the kids coming of age like its the teenager coming of age. I like how the show deals with themes of actual problems like toxic masculinity in an adult way instead of Chibnall's way of dealing with them by lecturing us for the episode & his weak writing makes the things about climate change & whatever the rosa parks episode was just boring they aren't things to get out raged at they're just things to um meh about too boring to care at least things that are infuriating have something to feel about them. Also I wish we got some of the second series as the episodes that where being spit balled sounded quite interesting like most have been made into big finish continuations but its placed before the first series finale & maybe one day we'll get some more of the show in books & stuff but I don't think it'll ever get the chance to be on TV again. Maybe one of the new spin-offs Russel is planning will be like it. I can't wait for the Unit one as I've always wondered why Unit hasn't had a spin-off yet K-9 had one why not UNIT. I wonder what another one would be maybe a new series of Torchwood & soft reboot it to get rid of Jack easily maybe try some other torchwood branch like a new version of 1 or maybe expand of 2 or even 4 as I think big Finish has mudded up torchwood 3 a bit. I hope we get a good amount of spin-offs that are good. Also do you know where can you find the direct to DVD doctor who wilderness years stuff like that one that has Kate Stewart in it.
@@dwfan91- I watched it two years ago. I don't think Chibnall's a bad writer just his first few series as show runner where not good as I got kinda bored of them & feel like the mess with the doctors background a bit too much as it should be a part left alone for the most part. But Flux was genuinely good & I think the Timeless children isn't the worst thing but I know it'll most likely be retconned like the TV Movie making the doctor half-human. I think Chibnall was just given something he hadn't touched in a while & he tried to do too much but when he decided not to use stable villains he let trapped himself without the characters he writes best for like he did quite well with the Sontarans & Cybermen as well as the Daleks he just in his first series didn't do much good & had confusing morals. I think the reason people said it was too political was because it didn't have much of the thing that allows well written stories to work where you need to think a bit about the points to notice the message like the Toxic masculinity sub-text in the dragon tattoo episode of class.
@@cillianennis9921 putting aside whatever thoughts on chibnall aside good or bad, it dont really matter, but his writing is not as heavy handed as class, there legit aint even subtext in that show its just plain text😂
I fell off the doctor who won for a while, still a fan but not keeping up with watching because I was in school, but like I haven't heard of this spin off...like ever lol this video is my introduction
and they still do- personally don't understand how so many people can have the same copy and paste opinion of heaven sent being a masterpiece and hell bent being awful, especially when they're 2 parts of the same story.
i mean hell bent did undermine the whole episode of heaven sent of the doctor having to accept and move on from the death of Clara its why its an amazing episode so i can see why its hated. But my beef with hell bent was one the guy said "Rassilon was a good person" bullshit he never done one good thing in his life the biggest menace to society.
@@xluqi1557 I think you misunderstand Heaven Sent if you think it's about the Doctor ACCEPTING Clara's death. He LITERALLY does the opposite. Rewatch that episode and then the scene of the Doctor and Clara in the cloisters. The whole point is that the Doctor in Heaven Sent is wrong
@@dwfan91- I see alr thx for the info but that's peoples reasoning is on why they hate the ep well that's what I hear from them I don't really hate the episode I just have beef with the guy saying Rassilon was a good person that's the equivalent of commissioner Gordon saying the Joker was a good person bullshit.
@@xluqi1557 yeah that is a definite and real reason to hate it- for the record, it's not like i love it or anything, I myself have plenty of gripes but I find myself depending it more than dunking on it

@@dwfan91- guess I probally should rewatch it I'll do that once I finish SJA
I fell off the doctor who won for a while, still a fan but not keeping up with watching because I was in school, but like I haven't heard of this spin off...like ever lol this video is my introduction
Yet another example of a show I watched through cringey UA-cam edits
I thought it was ok at the time, granted i was only like 15
Pretty sure I watched the first episode. But it’s so forgettable I don’t reminder anything about it and whether I tried to watch another episode.
8:26 sssooo… you don’t count
people disliked hell bent ?
and they still do- personally don't understand how so many people can have the same copy and paste opinion of heaven sent being a masterpiece and hell bent being awful, especially when they're 2 parts of the same story.
i mean hell bent did undermine the whole episode of heaven sent of the doctor having to accept and move on from the death of Clara its why its an amazing episode so i can see why its hated.
@@xluqi1557 yeah that is a definite and real reason to hate it- for the record, it's not like i love it or anything, I myself have plenty of gripes but I find myself depending it more than dunking on it
nice a show I will not watch and will not give a shit for. but on a real good vid i randomly found this show in BBC iPlayer.
Yes, i love Class. Yes, I love Mrs Quill. Fight me (jk)
usually love your videos but being anti class is unforgiveable smh /lh
I'm not! I swear! well maybe a little
