- I started working again on this project a week or so ago. It's getting there! Still figuring out the texturing stuff, axe is still scuffed but it's definitely an improvement from last time.

Gathered friends, thanks for all the nice comments, likes and subs. I really didn't expect this video to blow up like it did. It means a lot to me! To clarify some things:
I plan to release version 1 before the end of November. I'm hoping to reach that goal but I will admit I am a new modder and thus pretty slow at times. Let's just see what happens. 🤞
There will be more custom weapons! Gali's Hooks, Tahu's flame sword, Kopaka's OG sword, etc. Not everything's going to be perfectly canon compliant but hey, rule of cool fanfiction logic applies here. I'm thinking of adding some alternate shields too, like STARS Tahu and his "golden bionicle" bohrok shield.
Even though I started this mod with Kopaka, my hope is you'll be able to pick whichever of the toa mata you'd like. I'm hoping to finish and release all of them with v1 but we'll just see what happens, might have to do it in waves. I suspect Onua and Pohatu in particular will be challenging.
I am working on a matoran model swap for Atreus but I don't think it'll be ready in time for the v1 release as the design isn't even finalized yet. I'm spending most of my time fixing the Kratos toa model and trying to get those damn arms from popping out of their sockets. I actually broke the mod the day after I filmed this and had to nuke my progress, go figure.
I think I can figure out transparency for Gali's Mask, but I haven't tested it too much. I'm not sure if I want it completely translucent or just the visor in front of her eyes. What do you guys think?

Personally I found the fully transparent mask a bit weird, some of the rendered scenes where it's just the visor looked better.

@@Solais1019 I hear ya, I was looking back at MNOG and noticed only the visor was transparent.
@@DKrumpp yeah. At the time of production I think that's what they wanted but didn't have the process to make selective parts of a single piece a different plastic, so it seems their intention was to have the visor clear and the rest opaque but the actual model had to go with clear plastic. The mask details show up better when it's not uniformly transparent.

This feels like the epic stories we would play out in our heads while playing with different toys. Kopaka is Kopaka, Baldur is some WWE action figure, and the house is a bunch of lincoln logs.

I remember I took a Christian Bale Batman action figure and painted it fully silver and replaced one of his hands with a Lego arm cannon.
I think I was making him a Mister Freeze Batman lol.

every time it closeups on the Kopaka model I am amazed by how much texturing detail there is. Even on the head _under_ the mask, even UNDER the mask itself, there's just so much weathering and scratching, but it's not over done, it FEELS so real, it's insane

In all seriousness, thank you! I wanted them to land somewhere in the middle ground, between the bright colorful plastics of the toys and worn, weathered tank armor. Still colorful and imbued with Mata Nui's divine spark so to speak, but they've been through some shit too.
My hope is that this effect will be even more pronounced with the other Toa, since they have more saturated, richer colors than Kopaka.
you absolutely nailed it then, because they definitely still have that bright and colorful feel that Lego tends to, but the weathering and scratching just grounds them in reality and tells a story, you can look at them and just _know_ these are beings that have seen their fair share of conflict
I would LOVE to see how the other Toa look in this style, especially if you're gonna be modding them into God of War as well, or any other equivalent game stage@@DKrumpp
@@Mystic2760 Yep, they'll also be in God of War. I'm going to give people options to customize their toa and (hopefully) matoran characters replacing Kratos and Atreus.
@@DKrumpp Is the model entirely custom-made? Or was it made using preexisting assets? I know team kanohi has a free-use parts pack of Bionicle pieces optimized for this sort of thing, but I recognize some pieces here that aren't included in that pack.
@@Sweld549 Good eye. I tried to use as many of the Team Kanohi parts as I could since I figured they were optimized for gaming.
The parts that I could not get from that pack, I either recreated myself, if they were simple enough, or I exported them from Stud.io and cleaned them up. In my honest opinion, some of the models in stud.io have the ugliest topology, great for posing but just awful for animation. Still, it's great to not have to start from scratch when I can.
Of course, every part regardless of origin has been decimated in Blender and/or had faces and features you'll never see removed for optimization.
Imagine a BIONICLE: Heroes game but it's just God of War following a depressed Kopaka struggling to survive in a world without his team, with only a Matoran apprentice who will soon replace him as a Toa.

Id pre-order the deluxe edition of this out of respect for third grade me that first discovered bionicles over 20 years ago.
This is actually a really high quality mod, he manages to get all the pieces of the Bionicle to move in the right way without them stretching awkwardly to fit the animation of Kratos
Thank you for noticing! Honestly, adjusting the animations(weight painting stuff) so they don't weirdly deform the Lego parts has been a huge challenge for me. It's not perfect but if I can get it to a place where it's 80 or 90% there, that'll be good enough for me.

Kopaka, the last survivor in his dimension, came there to have a fresh start, to start a life anew. Masks of his fallen brothers, sisters and everyone else always haunt him, like the feeling of failure. Losing his ice sword, he holds Lewa's axe to honor his memory. The only other thing he has is Tahu's fire sword hidden in his house.
This is incredible, I've seen lots of bonkle mods in say Skyrim, but we need THIS kind of Bionicle game we need, the texture and the expression is so marvellous

Honestly I think a Bionicle theme'd souls-like
action RPG would be the sickest thing ever, and after Lies of P Im actually starting to trust other developers with the genre.
Its got the DEEP lore and mythos, the amazing world and creatures, and great potential for some AWESOME boss fights and customized character builds.

This gives off the energy of kopaka from Bionicle: Mythology, who blames himself for the death of the other toa at the hands of makuta
what really sells this is the detail and shading, the weathered paint and slight dithering really makes it feel like its officially in the game.
Thank you so much, I really tried my best. You can thank Substance Painter, it made a lot of the texturing relatively easy. The hardest part for me has been the animation.

This is what a modern day Bionicle game could look like
My Parent: “Aww look at him playing with his Bionicles, I wonder what he is imagining”.
5 year old me: 0:00 After getting getting his revenge on Makuta for manipulating him and forcing him to kill his Toa brethren. Kopaka suffered terrible nightmares of his past actions that he committed unwillingly. So much so that he left land of Mata Nui to places unheard of, however, no matter how much distance he placed himself from his homeland Kopaka was unable to escape his nightmares. Unable to cope with the pain, he has chosen to cremate his Toa brethren and to spread their ashes back to Mata Nui, not only give them peace but his soul as well. Armed with the elements and weapons of his brethren goes into an long and difficult journey of redemption not as the Toa of Ice but as Kopaka, the Last Toa.
I like that it's a MOC version of Kopaka to truly fill in the bulk Kratos has.
No other way to do it imo, the OG Toa Mata designs are a certified classic but Kratos is a chonky boy. The animations wouldn't look right I think, they're too lanky and not quite human proportion.

@@EliasKaydaniusyeah my opinion of the Nuva sets have soured over the years. Plus Pohatu has always been my favorite and the Nuva version really did him dirty imo. The climbing claws are cool though, I might include them as a blades of chaos skin.
this might be the most random GOW mod I've ever seen but as an OG Bionicle fan it warms my heart to see that Bionicle still gets love
Thank you so much! I started this project last year when those Bionicle fan game trailers came out. I thought they were so impressive and I wanted to make a game or mod of my own, so this is what I decided on. Plus GOW is just a fantastic game too.
I know it's ridiculous of me to say, but after the Glatorian era of Bionicle, I think the Toa would do well with proper hands for this mod. But that aside holy cow the detail you put on Kopaka is amazing. I can almost imagine the story changing to be more akin to an ancient machine reawakened to protect an orphaned Atreus.
For me, I'm trying to keep the parts mostly accurate to what was available during the 2001-2003 story arcs, I really enjoy how those sets look and how they're more styled after technic sets with all their gearboxes, lift arms and other mechanical components. Hands aren't out of the question but I think, for right now, I prefer where they are. The ball socket is such an iconic piece too!
it'd be sick to see recreations of the movie models in these mods
Imagine if Kopaka wasn't the only one of these ancient machines, though. Like, the duo's journey takes them through Helheim, where ice powers are ineffective. Imagine if Kopaka had to seek out Tahu so he could make the journey in his place. Maybe even the rest of the Toa Mata as obstacles only they can solve pop up one by one.

I grew up with Bionicle as a huge part of my childhood so to see that people still remember and cherish it makes me so happy.

The attention to detail in the model is amazing.
It would be nice to see Atreus as Matoro or some kind of ko-matoran. Now that think about it, it would be crazy for the whole game to be modded with bionicle characters, although i don't think that would be an easy task. Just a thought. It's still super cool what you have done here.
I would imagine it wouldn't be too much work since its lego parts most reuse the same assets with various changes
@@petercottantail7850 oh yeah, I didn't think that way. Still you would need to model some uniqe parts every now and then if you are not yanking them off of something else.

Makes me want to see a triple aaa bionicle game with this level of detail, the bionicle franchise has so much lore and depth and stories that could be adapted to games

@@ananousouswhat's crazy though is nows the perfect time for such games. The common triple A game is KNOWN to be lame nowadays. I mean look at smaller games like robocop. People love it and no one cares about the character that much in this era. Meanwhile bionicle? A genre actually having a following for more than a decade? It'd get so many new fans as well. Plus lego never fails to drop bangers. It won't god of war level gore and action. But it will be a more dramatic lego game with more complicated mechanics along with the humour

I have never wanted to play a mod more than this moment. I'm obsessed. I wanna see every cutscene with Kopaka's character model! And the Character Model - OH BABY THE CHARACTER MODEL, it's so fascinating to look at. You've done an amazing job!
Actually, if all else fails, I'd love to see Kopaka picking up the blades, if the mod can hold up for that long that would be amazing. But that's not my expectation for something soon. I can only imagine how hard and time consuming this already is. This is already so much!

The best part about this mod is that they filled out the toa mata figure too fit kratoses figure with actual technic parts. Gives it an extra layer of authenticity. Good work!
Thank you, that was my hope! The Toa Mata designs are iconic but Kratos is built like a truck, much more bulkier than them.
This is, hands down, the best BIONICLE themed mod I have seen!
After Mata Nui merged the planets to repair Spherus Magna, many matoran and agori alike revelled in their victory.
With the battle over, many began to change. The Toa Nuva shed their protodermis armour, reverting back into the Toa Mata as if by design. Their purpose finally fulfilled.
However, the Toa, protectors and warriors chosen by the Great Spirit began to ponder... "What now?"
Some, like Nuparu, Gali and Tahu gave their energy to build and power new wondrous cities, becoming wise Turaga as a result.
Others, like Onua, Pohatu and Hewkii joined the Glatorian Arena battles, providing entertainment for all.
Jaller, Hahli and Takanuva had begun the exploration of ancient ruins the Great Beings left behind.
For an unknown reason, Lewa had left. His weapons embedded in the sand.
Kopaka and Kongu decided to search for their lost brother, with Kongu retrieving the twin Air Katana's and Kopaka taking up Lewa's air Axe. As Kongu ventured across the lands of Spherus Magna, the Toa of Ice delved deep into the planet. Discovering strange runes and activating a machine that churned and hummed as new worlds appeared. Swallowing Kopaka, he was now in an unfamiliar land.
Days past as he had to learn the terrain. Turning into weeks of understanding the new world. Months of practising with his Brothers weapon. Years, eventually learning the languages of the unusual creatures. Protecting these new beings from the planets own monsters. Even taking one as an apprentice.
As Kopaka researched and investigated, every lead he found resulting in a deadend. Perhaps Lewa was not in this domain. His apprentice was brash and young. Suggesting that Lewa maybe on another world, impatient to explore the universe.
The Toa of Ice, gruff and toughened by this world, he'd often wonder how the others would view him now. Whether they'd think he'd become too hardened. Or would they see him as his quiet, stoic self as always? As if nothing changed.
For now, the search for more portals was his new duty, his destiny. Bring back his Brother of Air and return home.
Whatever stands in his way, it will face Toa Kopaka, fueled with the power of experience.
But in the vast universe, power does not go unnoticed by hungry eyes.

Childhood memories rushing back. I remember the days bionicles was popular read the comics in fact one of my best friends was the one who designed the mask of light look back when they asked fans to give them ideas one what the mask of light should look like. It was a contest. He won. But sadly sadly didn’t get any credit for it. Just a thank you note. Still good memories

Since he has Lewa's axe on him, I like to think that the red marking on his face is meant to be in memory of Tahu
a official bionicle game like this would be a dream come true.
In an alternate timeline, the Toa Mata were defeated and killed by Makuta, failing in their mission to reawaken Mata Nui. Mata Nui, on a last effort before being killed off by Makuta, uses his remaining power to send the surviving Kopaka out of Aqua Magna while also granting him the elemental powers and abilities of his deceased brothers and sister.
After an unknown time, Kopaka arrives on Earth, specifically on Midgard. Here, Kopaka meets a couple and their newborn, without knowing that it was actually the mighty Kratos and his family, Faye and Atreus. Kratos then trains Kopaka while Faye gives him all her knowledge about the Norse world. At some point, they were attacked by the Norse Gods, resulting in Faye surviving but Kratos being killed. Kopaka then promises Kratos to protect Faye and raise Atreus, while they all go into hiding in the woods. Long time after, after Faye's death, Kopaka goes with Atreus on a journey to spread Faye's ashes. This will be Kopaka's last mission.

Surprisingly one of the coolest things about growing up with the 1st gens as a kid, is that some of the other kids who also did are really good at making mods now

Absolutely lovely and amazing job with this, I don't even really mind the oldschool hand pieces being wonky with holding items, this just makes me think back to me making up my own Bionicles stories as a little kid. Just needs Atreus as a Matoran and you're set. I wouldn't dare ask for a total conversion though, I can't imagine how much time and effort it would take for that.
From one OG to another, ball socket hands for life! Thank you very much, it's been a ton of work and there's still lot to do, but it's coming together. Total conversion probably won't happen and is uncharted territory, but I'll see how far I can take it.

While I think lore and story wise, Tahu would have been a better fit, character wise, Kopaka fits absolutely perfectly!

Yeah the shoulders popping out bother me too, believe me I've tried lots of things but I haven't found a way to fix that yet. I haven't decided if it's still worth pursuing a fix for.
@@DKrumpp Maybe you could try making the connecter longer inwards and add extra a little bit more just in case
@@zolden37yeah it's weird, whenever I would add more pieces inside, they would just all be brought out of the socket. I have a feeling it has to do with how the skeleton is moving the parts and maybe I just need a better understanding of that.
I mean what I would do is just the line the bionicle parts with Kratos's rig and then build on top of that@@DKrumpp

A bionicle game that is story driven would be pretty epic, especially if it has a serious theme to it. I know lego would have my money if the bionicle franchise was aimed at more late teens/adults. Bionicles is a franchise that has gree up with a generation, I think it only make since to cater to them then to make it for kids again.

honestly I'm in love with it, honestly cant wait to see more of this. I'm impressed just by the custom dsign and seeing how all the parts go together to make a more fleshed out bodyframe. If atreus ends up a matoran in the far future this will be a solid 11/10 for me just for the dumb smile on my face.
Surprised with all the added parts it still uses the base hand design of the toys. but thats legit the worst thing I can think of, you've done great work.
